Background: The neural system plays a critical role in controlling gut immunity, and the gut microbiota contributes to this process. However, the roles and mechanisms of gut-brain-microbiota interactions remain unclear. To address this issue, we employed Drosophila as a model organism. We have previously shown that NP3253 neurons, which are connected to the brain and gut, are essential for resistance to oral bacterial infections. Here, we aimed to investigate the role of NP3253 neurons in the regulation of gut immunity. Methods: We performed RNA-seq analysis of the adult Drosophila gut after genetically inactivating the NP3253 neurons. Flies were reared under oral bacterial infection and normal feeding conditions. In addition, we prepared samples under germ-free conditions to evaluate the role of the microbiota in gut gene expression. We knocked down the genes regulated by NP3253 neurons and examined their susceptibility to oral bacterial infections. Results: We found that immune-related gene expression was upregulated in NP3253 neuron-inactivated flies compared to the control. However, this upregulation was abolished in axenic flies, suggesting that the immune response was abnormally activated by the microbiota in NP3253 neuron-inactivated flies. In addition, redox-related gene expression was downregulated in NP3253 neuron-inactivated flies, and this downregulation was also observed in axenic flies. Certain redox-related genes were required for resistance to oral bacterial infections, suggesting that NP3253 neurons regulate the redox responses for gut immunity in a microbiota-independent manner. Conclusion: These results show that NP3253 neurons regulate the appropriate gene expression patterns in the gut and contribute to maintain homeostasis during oral infections.

"Clothes with horizontal (or vertical) stripes are perceived as wider and shorter (slimmer and taller)." This belief is common yet inconsistent with the Helmholtz illusion. It has often attracted attention from researchers of perception. Despite the controversy among empirical studies, it is persistently supported by the general public. This article explores the early appearance of this common belief in Japan in historical records. Consequently, we discovered the descriptions of the common belief in a Japanese beauty handbook titled "Miyako Fuzoku Kewai Den [Cosmetic manners and customs in Edo]," published in 1813. In Japan, this belief was not born in modern times. Instead, it was established over 200 years ago, when vertical striped patterns on clothes were popularized.

To investigate the cognitive processes underlying creative inspiration, we tested the extent to which viewing or copying prior examples impacted creative output in art. In Experiment 1, undergraduates made drawings under three conditions: (a) copying an artist's drawing, then producing an original drawing; (b) producing an original drawing without having seen another's work; and (c) copying another artist's work, then reproducing that artist's style independently. We discovered that through copying unfamiliar abstract drawings, participants were able to produce creative drawings qualitatively different from the model drawings. Process analyses suggested that participants' cognitive constraints became relaxed, and new perspectives were formed from copying another's artwork. Experiment 2 showed that exposure to styles of artwork considered unfamiliar facilitated creativity in drawing, while styles considered familiar did not do so. Experiment 3 showed that both copying and thoroughly viewing artwork executed using an unfamiliar style facilitated creativity in drawing, whereas merely thinking about alternative styles of artistic representation did not do so. These experiments revealed that deep encounters with unfamiliar artworks-whether through copying or prolonged observation-change people's cognitive representations of the act of drawing to produce novel artwork.

Thoracic myelopathy is defined as spinal cord compression in the thoracic region, leading to sensory and motor dysfunctions in the trunk and lower extremities, and can be caused by various degenerative processes of the spine. Thoracic myelopathy is rare, and there are many unsolved problems including its epidemiological and clinical features. We have established a registration system of spinal surgeries, which covered almost all surgeries in Miyagi Prefecture, and enrolled the data of 265 patients with thoracic myelopathy from 1988 to 2002. The annual rate of surgery gradually increased and averaged 0.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, which was less than 1/10 of that for cervical myelopathy. About 20 patients with thoracic myelopathy are operated on in Miyagi Prefecture each year. It frequently develops in middle-aged males. About half of the cases were caused by ossification of the ligamentum flavum, followed by ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, intervertebral disc herniation and posterior spur. Patients usually noticed numbness or pain in the legs and the preoperative duration was long, averaging 2 years. Its symptomatic similarities to lumbar disorders might cause difficulty in making a correct diagnosis. Since thoracic myelopathy can markedly restrict the activities of daily life, even general physicians should recognize this entity.
