The unobservable use of hormones in fish production is becoming an alarming issue worldwide. To reveal the fact in Bangladesh, 144 fish samples (rui (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla), and monosex tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)) were collected from different fish farms and markets of Mymensingh district. The market samples had two sources (Mymensingh and Rajshahi district). The steroid hormonal (testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone) residue was analyzed by HPLC-UV detection. A standard questionnaire survey was conducted where most farmers (80%) denied using the hormone in fish production. Among the analyzed samples of all three fishes, hormonal residues were detected in approximately 98% of samples, and around 92% contained residues above the ADI. Among the contaminated samples, 70% of samples had a single residue and 30% had multiple residues. The testosterone and progesterone hormonal residue was detected in all three fishes in both farm and market samples and ranged (above ADI) from 2.1 to 16.96 µg/kg and 31.47-731.57 µg/kg (p < 0.05) respectively. The estrogen hormone residue was only detected in market samples (Rajshahi district) of rui and catla and no residue was detected in tilapia fish and the hormone level (above ADI) ranged from 8.23 to 40.13 µg/kg. This study revealed that the use of hormones varies on the attitude of farmers based on the local culture pattern as estrogen hormone residue was only detected in market samples. The consumption of contaminated fish at such concentrations may cause many health hazards in humans, especially in children. Thus, this study reveals a new alarming fact to focus on, and an effective monitoring system should be implemented as soon as possible for public health concerns.

We developed a steady-state high-density plasma source by applying a hollow cathode to a cascade arc discharge device. The hollow cathode is made of a thermionic material (LaB6) to facilitate plasma production inside it. The cascade arc discharge device with the hollow cathode produced a stationary plasma with an electron density of about 1016 cm-3. It was found that the plasma source produces a strong pressure gradient between the gas feed and the vacuum chamber. The plasma source separated the atmospheric pressure (100 kPa) and a vacuum (100 Pa) when the discharge was performed with an argon gas flow rate of 5.0 l/min and a discharge current of 40 A. An analysis of the pressure gradient along the plasma source showed that the pressure difference between the gas feed and the vacuum chamber can be well described by the Hagen-Poiseuille flow equation, indicating that the viscosity of the neutral gas is the dominant factor for producing this pressure gradient. A potential profile analysis suggested that the plasma was mainly heated within cylindrical channels whose inner diameter was 3 mm. This feature and the results of the pressure ratio analysis indicated that the temperature, and, thus, viscosity, of the neutral gas increased with the increasing number of intermediate electrodes. The discharge characteristics and shape of the hollow cathode are suitable for plasma window applications.

RESUMO

The fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is as much an information war as it is a medical war. Members from South Asia and the Asia Pacific countries share their experiences and challenges faced with collaborative responses for the ASIS&T Special Chapter funded project on "Dealing with COVID-19 and saving people's lives in South Asia (SA) areas & beyond-A Health Informatics Promotion Project" awarded to the South Asia Chapter in 2021. The panel discusses the challenges faced within the context of geopolitical, socio-economic, religious, and cultural conditions prevalent within their countries. In the first 40 minutes, panel members narrate their own experiences by sharing their personal stories about this collaborative project and share the challenges of content creation and promotion from within the context of their respective countries. The next 30 minutes will be facilitated by the panel chair inviting a discussion between panel members and the audience to engage and come up with innovative ideas, discuss challenges in creating multilingual content and suggestions for improving the project outcome as well as shed light on initiating future health informatics project in similar regions. The last 20 minutes will culminate with the summarization of these collaborative experiences.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the understanding of the infodemic for making informed decisions. Limiting the spread of health misinformation and disinformation was the primary goal of the health informatics project. The project became the recipient of the ASIS&T "Chapter Innovation of the Year Award 2021". A repertoire of online and offline initiatives was carried out with 9 well-researched videos for promoting health informatics. Since August 2021, thousands of academics, librarians, teachers, parents, and students from 16 countries and regions were invited to be science communicators to create and disseminate accurate health information in their areas through an international digital story writing competition. In this paper, we will discuss the strategies of responding to the information crisis, including employing interventions that protect against the infodemic and mitigate its harmful effects, to strengthen the resilience of individuals and communities in dealing with it in an information-resilient society.

The traditional causes of Chronic Kidney Damage (CKD) are Diabetes and Hypertension. However, recent studies reported the possible relations between metal exposure and CKD. This study aims to explore the status of metals in CKD patients compared to their healthy counterparts at Narayanganj, Bangladesh, through a cross-sectional study. In this study, 50 volunteers were involved; 30 CKD patients and 20 healthy controls. Five metals were measured from serum [Copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn)] and urine [Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), and Chromium (Cr)] using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Compared to the controls the CKD patients exhibited significantly higher levels of Pb, Cd and Cr levels in their urine samples. This signifies a potential association between heavy metal exposure and CKD. The serum levels of Cu were much higher than expected for CKD patients than controls, and the Zn values were in accordance with established literature. However, the level of Zn in blood was significantly lower in the CKD group compared to the control. This data suggests that the Cu imbalance in the serum of the CKD subjects might have been related to a myriad of reasons, the most plausible of which being exposed to large concentrations of the nephrotoxic metals such as Pb, Cd and Cr in this study. Our study has shed a much needed light on the correlation between CKD and exposure to heavy metals and imbalance of essential metals in blood serum, in a rural locality of Bangladesh.

The objective of this research is to synthesize hierarchical strontium loaded Y-zeolite and study its application for ironbark (IB) and plastic waste (PW) co-pyrolysis. Commercial parent Y-zeolite (Si/Al = 2.48) was modified via sequential dealumination-desilication using citric acid and NaOH. Further, strontium (8 wt %) was loaded into the modified Y-zeolite via wet and dry impregnation methods. The prepared catalyst was characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption isothermal, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) combined with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). After dealumination (treatment using 0.1 M of citric acid), the external surface area and Si/Al ratio increased from 53.5 to 147.4 m2/g and 2.48 to 5.36, respectively. However, the sequential desilication treatment reduced Si/Al ratio from 5.36 to 2.57. In addition, Y-zeolite enhanced the total aromatic percentage and reduced the acidic group in co-pyrolysis oil.

Silver nanoparticles are one of the most beneficial forms of heavy metals in nanotechnology applications. Due to its exceptional antimicrobial properties, low electrical and thermal resistance, and surface plasmon resonance, silver nanoparticles are used in a wide variety of products, including consumer goods, healthcare, catalysts, electronics, and analytical equipment. As the production and applications of silver nanoparticles containing products increase daily, the environmental pollution due to silver nanoparticles release is increasing and affecting especially the aqueous ecosystem. Silver nanoparticles can kill useful bacteria in soil and water, and bioaccumulate in living organisms even at low concentrations from 10-2 to 10 µg/mL silver can show antibacterial effect. On the other hand, the maximum silver discharge limit into freshwater is 0.1 µg/L and 3.2 µg/L for Australia and the USA, respectively. To reduce its toxic consequences and meet the regulatory guidelines, it is crucial to remove silver nanoparticles from wastewater before it is discharged into other water streams. Several technologies are available to remove silver nanoparticles, but the adsorption process using low-cost adsorbents is a promising alternative to mitigate silver nanoparticle pollution in the bulk stage. As one of the low-cost adsorbents, biochar produced from the biomass waste could be a suitable adsorbent. This review focuses on collating the latest evidence on silver nanoparticle production, applications, environmental consequences, and cost-effective technological approaches for silver removal from wastewater.

Hoolock gibbons (genus Hoolock) are a group of very endangered primate species that belong to the small ape family (family Hylobatidae). The entire population that is distributed in the northeast and southeast of Bangladesh is estimated to include only around 350 individuals. A conservation program is thus necessary as soon as possible. Genetic markers are significant tools for planning such programs. In this study, we examined chromosomal characteristics of two western hoolock gibbons that were captured in a Bangladesh forest. During chromosome analysis, we encountered two chromosome variations that were observed for the first time in the wild-born western hoolock gibbons (Hoolock hoolock). The first one was a nonhomologous centromere position in chromosome 8 that was observed in the two examined individuals. The alteration was identical in the two individuals, which were examined by G-band and DAPI-band analyses. Chromosome paint analyses revealed that the difference in the centromere position was due to a single small pericentric inversion. The second variation was a heterozygous elongation in chromosome 9. Analysis by sequential techniques of fluorescence in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA and silver nitrate staining revealed a single and an inverted tandem duplication, respectively, of the nucleolus organizer region in two individuals. These chromosome variations provide useful information for the next steps to consider the evolution and conservation of the hoolock gibbon.
