RESUMO

The four new ligands, dialkyl esters of (S,S)-propylenediamine-N,N'-di-(2,2'-di-(4-hydroxy-benzil))acetic acid (R2-S,S-pddtyr·2HCl) (R = ethyl (L1), propyl (L2), butyl (L3), and pentyl (L4)) and corresponding palladium(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, infrared, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. In vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated using the MTT assay on four tumor cell lines, including mouse mammary (4T1) and colon (CT26), and human mammary (MDA-MD-468) and colon (HCT116), as well as non-tumor mouse mesenchymal stem cells. Using fluorescence spectroscopy were investigated the interactions of new palladium(II) complexes [PdCl2(R2-S,S-pddtyr)]; (R = ethyl (C1), propyl (C2), butyl (C3), and pentyl (C4)) with calf thymus human serum albumin (HSA) and DNA (CT-DNA). The high values of the binding constants, Kb, and the Stern-Volmer quenching constant, KSV, show the good binding of all complexes for HSA and CT-DNA. The mentioned ligands and complexes were also tested on in vitro antimicrobial activity against 11 microorganisms. Testing was performed by the microdilution method, where the minimum inhibitory concentration (MMC) and the minimum microbicidal concentration (MMC) were determined.

RESUMO

Early weaning is an important stressor that impairs the piglet´s health, and essential oils appear as promising candidates to improve it instead of antibiotics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oral supplementation of free and nanoencapsulated Minthostachys verticillata essential oil (EO and NEO, respectively) on immunological, biochemical and antioxidants parameters as well as on gut microbiota in weaned piglets. EO was extracted by hydrodistillation and nanoencapsulation was performed by high-energy method using Tween 80 and Span 60 as surfactants. EO and NEO were chemically analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The cytotoxic effects of both EO and NEO was evaluated on Caco-2 cell line. For in vivo assay, male weaned piglets (age: 28 days, mean initial body weight: 11.63 ± 0.37 kg) were randomly distributed in six groups of six animals each (n = 6) and received orally EO (10.0 mg/kg/day) or NEO (2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 mg/kg/day), named hereinafter as EO-10, NEO-2.5, NEO-5 and NEO-10, for 30 consecutive days. Animals not treated or treated with surfactants mixture were evaluated as control and vehicle control. Subsequently, histological, hematological and biochemical parameters, cytokines production, oxidative markers, CD4+/CD8+ T cells and gut microbiota were evaluated. GC-MS analysis was similar in both EO and NEO. The NEO was more toxic on Caco-2 cells than EO. Oral supplementation of EO-10 or NEO-10 improved growth performance compared to control group NEO-2.5 or NEO-5 (p < 0.05) groups. NEO-2.5, NEO-5 and NEO-10 did not alter the morpho-physiology of digestive organs and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in liver compared to control (p < 0.05) or EO-10 groups (p < 0.05, p < 0.01). In addition, NEO-10 showed an increase in CD4+/CD8+ T cells ratio (p < 0.001), and induced the highest serum levels of IL-10 (p < 0.01). Serum triglycerides levels were significantly lower in animals treated with EO-10 or NEO-2.5, NEO-5 and NEO-10 compared to control group (p < 0.001). Gut microbiota analysis showed that NEO-10 favor the development of beneficial intestinal microorganisms to improve parameters related to early weaning of piglets. In conclusion, EO and NEO improved parameters altered by early weaning in piglets however, NEO was safer and powerful. Therefore, NEO should be further studied to be applied in swine health.

RESUMO

Biofilm, as a form of the microbial community in nature, represents an evolutionary adaptation to the influence of various environmental conditions. In nature, the largest number of microorganisms occur in the form of multispecies biofilms. The ability of microorganisms to form a biofilm is one of the reasons for antibiotic resistance. The creation of biofilms resistant to various contaminants, on the other hand, improves the biological treatment process in wastewater treatment plants. Heavy metals cannot be degraded, but they can be transformed into non-reactive and less toxic forms. In this process, microorganisms are irreplaceable as they interact with the metals in a variety of ways. The environment polluted by heavy metals, such as wastewater, is also a source of undiscovered microbial diversity and specific microbial strains. Numerous studies show that biofilm is an irreplaceable strategy for heavy metal removal. In this review, we systematize recent findings regarding the bioremediation potential of biofilm-forming microbial species isolated from diverse wastewaters for heavy metal removal. In addition, we include some mechanisms of action, application possibilities, practical issues, and future prospects.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Translation and cross-cultural validation of the Serbian version of the Lower Extremity Functional Scale (Srb-LEFS). METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study initially included 186 postmenopausal women aged 60 to 75 years who underwent an x-ray examination of both knees, along with body mass, body height, waist circumference, knee range of motion, and blood pressure measurements. The laboratory analyses included the evaluation of fasting glucose levels and lipid profile. All participants completed the LEFS, Lequesne index, and 36-Item Short-Form Survey-RAND. RESULTS: The analyses revealed good internal consistency (α = 0.95), good test-retest reliability, and a two-factor structure of the Srb-LEFS. Concurrent validity analysis confirmed a significant positive correlation between Srb-LEFS scores and the 36-Item Short-Form Survey-RAND Physical Functioning subscale ( r = 0.889, P < 0.0001), the Lequesne index ( r = -0.976, P < 0.0001), and the Numeric Rating Scale for pain ( r = -0.762, P < 0.0001). Convergent validity analyses revealed a statistically significant negative correlation between the Srb-LEFS scores and age ( r = -0.25, P = 0.006), body mass index ( r = -0.31, P < 0.01), and waist circumference ( r = -0.37, P < 0.0001). The Srb-LEFS scores were statistically significantly higher among participants that reported moderate physical activity levels, as well as those that had fewer comorbidities, minor structural knee damage, greater knee range of motion, and greater quadriceps femoris muscle strength. CONCLUSIONS: The Serbian version of the LEFS is feasible, valid, and reliable for use in both clinical practice and clinical studies to assess self-reported physical functioning in older individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

RESUMO

The four new ligands, propylenediamine derivatives of phenylalanine (R2-S,S-pddbaˑ2HCl; L1-L4) and their palladium(II) complexes (C1-C4) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The interactions of new palladium(II) complexes with human serum albumin (HSA) were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. All investigated compounds can be transported to target cells by binding to HSA, but complex C4 interacts most strongly. Molecular docking simulations were applied to comprehend the binding of the complex to the molecular target of HSA. Obtained results are in good correlations with experimental data regarding binding affinity by HSA. In vitro cytotoxicity activities were investigated on four tumor cell lines (mouse mammary (4 T1) and colon (CT26), human mammary (MDA-MD-468) and colon (HCT116)) and mouse mesenchymal stem cells as non-tumor control cells. Cytotoxic capacity was determined by MTT test and according to obtained results ligand L4 stands out as the most active and selective compound and as a good candidate for future in vivo testing. Further examination of the ligand L4 and corresponding complex C4 led to the conclusion that both induced cell death mainly by apoptosis. Ligand L4 facilitated cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase and decreased proliferative capacity of tumor cells. In vitro antimicrobial activity for ligands and corresponding Pd(II) complexes was investigated against eleven microorganisms (eight strains of pathogenic bacteria and three yeast species) using microdilution method. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum microbicidal concentration were determined.

RESUMO

Introduction: Intracerebroventricularly (icv) injected streptozotocin (STZ) is a widely used model for sporadic Alzheimer's disease (sAD)-like pathology, marked by oxidative stress-mediated pathological progression. Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) is a noninvasive technique for brain activity stimulation with the ability to induce long-term potentiation-like plasticity and represents a promising treatment for several neurological diseases, including AD. The present study aims to investigate the effect of the iTBS protocol on the animal model of STZ-induced sAD-like pathology in the context of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloidogenic effects in the cortex, striatum, hippocampus, and cerebellum. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into four experimental groups: control (icv normal saline solution), STZ (icv STZ-3 mg/kg), STZ + iTBS (STZ rats subjected to iTBS protocol), and STZ + Placebo (STZ animals subjected to placebo iTBS noise artifact). Biochemical assays and immunofluorescence microscopy were used to evaluate functional and structural changes. Results: The icv STZ administration induces oxidative stress and attenuates antioxidative capacity in all examined brain regions. iTBS treatment significantly reduced oxidative and nitrosative stress parameters. Also, iTBS decreased Aß-1-42 and APP levels. The iTBS enhances antioxidative capacity reported as elevated activity of its enzymatic and non-enzymatic components. In addition, iTBS elevated BDNF expression and attenuated STZ-induced astrogliosis confirmed by decreased GFAP+/VIM+/C3+ cell reactivity in the hippocampus. Discussion: Our results provide experimental evidence for the beneficial effects of the applied iTBS protocol in attenuating oxidative stress, increasing antioxidant capacity and decreasing reactive astrogliosis in STZ-administrated rats.

RESUMO

In this research paper, the total phenols (TP), flavonoids (TF), and tannins (TT) content in the acetone and ethyl acetate extracts of Najas marina L. and the identification and quantification of phenolic acids and flavonoids from the ethyl acetate extract were performed. Antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm properties of the mentioned extracts were investigated in vitro. The genotoxic potential was analyzed in cultured human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). The TP and TF content was higher in the ethyl acetate extract, dominated by quercetin (172.4 µg mg-1) and ferulic acid (22.74 µg mg-1), while the TT content was slightly higher in the acetone extract. Both extracts tested showed limited antioxidant effects compared to ascorbic acid. The strongest antibacterial activity was observed with Gram-positive bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus (MIC and MMC at 0.31 mg ml-1) and S. aureus ATCC 25923 (MIC at <0.02 mg ml-1), while antifungal activity was limited. Both extracts tested showed better activity on preformed biofilms. Acetone extract had no genotoxic activity but showed significant genoprotective activity against mitomycin C-induced DNA damage in cultured PBLs. Results of our research demonstrate the potential for the development of plant-based antibacterial and biofilm agents.

RESUMO

The goal of the current study was to examine the effects of pollutants (White color - CP; Metallic red color - FM; Thinner - CN; Thinner for rinsing paint - MF; Basic color (primer) - FH) originating from the automotive industry on the biofilm growth, matrix protein content, and activity of the hydrolytic enzymes of selected microbial strains in laboratory conditions that mimic the bioreactor conditions. The chosen microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, and fungi) were isolated from automotive industry wastewater. Pure microbe cultures and their consortia were injected into AMB Media carriers and developed into biofilms. The use of AMB media carriers has been linked to an increase in the active surface area colonized by microorganisms. Afterwards, the carriers were transferred to Erlenmeyer flasks with nutrient media and pollutants at a concentration of 200 µL/mL. The current study found that, depending on the microbial strain, development phase, and chemical structure, the assessed pollutants had an inhibitory or stimulatory influence on the growth of single cultures and their consortia. Statistical analysis found positive correlations between the protein content in the matrix and the biofilm biomass of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and consortia in CP and FH media, respectively. The proteolytic activity of Candida utilis was very pronounced in media with MF and CN. The best alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) was achieved in the CN medium of R. mucilaginosa. Acid invertase activity was the highest in the FM and CP media of Escherichia coli and consortia, respectively, whereas the highest alkaline invertase activity was measured in the MF medium of E. coli. A positive correlation was confirmed between ALP and the biofilm biomass of R. mucilaginosa in CP and CN media, as well as between ALP and the biofilm biomass of Penicillium expansum in FM medium. The findings provide novel insights into the extracellular hydrolytic activity of the investigated microbial strains in the presence of auto paints, as well as a good platform for subsequent research into comprehensive biofilm profiling using modern methodologies.

RESUMO

Newly palladium(II) complexes (C1, C2) with derivatives of 2-aminothiazoles (L1 = 2-amino-6-methylbenzothiazole, L2 = 2-amino-6-chlorobenzothiazole), general formula [PdL2Cl2] were synthesized and characterized by elemental microanalyses, IR, NMR spectroscopy and X-ray spectroscopy in case of [Pd(L2)2Cl2]. The kinetic of the substitution reactions of complexes and the nucleophiles, such as guanosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP), tripeptide glutathione (GSH) and amino acid L-methionine (L-Met), were studied by stopped-flow technique. The complex C2 was always more reactive, while the order of the reactivity of the nucleophiles, due to the associative mode of the reaction, was L-Met > GSH > 5'-GMP. In order to determine the type of interactions between palladium(II) complexes and calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA), we used electronic absorption spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, and fluorescence spectroscopic studies, while interactions with bovine serum albumin (BSA) were determined only with fluorescence spectroscopic studies. The observed results confirmed that both complexes bound to DNA by groove binding. The significantly strong interaction with BSA, especially for complex C2, was also observed. In vitro cytotoxic activity was evaluated against four tumor cell lines, 4 T1, CT26, MDA-MB-468, HCT116 and mesenchymal stem cells (mMSC). C1 complex showed higher cytotoxic activity against CT26 cell line. Flow cytometry analysis showed that C1 stimulated apoptosis of tumor cells via inhibition of expression of antiapoptotic Bcl-2 molecule and decelerated proliferation by decreasing Cyclin-D and increasing expression of P21. In vitro antimicrobial activity for ligands and corresponding palladium(II) complexes was investigated by microdilution method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum microbicidal concentration (MMC) were determined. Tested compounds exhibited selective and moderate activity.

RESUMO

In this study, estimation capacities and optimization of a dye concentration sensing model by an adapted neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) as well as central composite design coupled with response surface methodology using a plastic optical fiber (POF) based sensor were investigated. Various diameters d of POF were used for sensing different concentrations of Remazol Black B (RBB), which acts as a sensing medium of the process. The efficiency of sensing was studied as a function of three independent variables: diameter of POF, concentration of RBB dye, and initial temperature of the solution. First, the independent parameters were fed as inputs to an ANFIS, and the output of the system was the output intensity of dye ratio to output the intensity of distilled water. ANFIS showed that this established model is reliable for a dye concentration sensing process and is mainly influenced by its diameter.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Minthostachys verticillata (Griseb.) Epling (Lamiaceae) is a plant used in folk medicine for digestive or respiratory disorders. In addition, it is incorporated as condiment, in foods, as beverage flavoring or mate. The ethnopharmacological interest of M. verticillata resides in its essential oil (EO). Part of group has demonstrated the immunomodulatory ability of EO giving this oil a biological potential not known until that moment and conducted studies to evaluate their possible application in diseases of veterinary interest. However, the immunomodulatory effects of EO administered orally have not been fully characterized. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study evaluated the impact of EO oral administration on gastrointestinal and immune health through measurement of immunological and oxidative parameters in mice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The EO was extracted from the leaves, slender stems and flowers of M. verticillata by hydrodistillation and chemical analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Prior to in vivo study, the cytotoxic effect of EO was determined using the human colon carcinoma Caco-2 cell line. For in vivo study, three groups of male Balb/c mice (n = 3) were orally administered with saline solution (control group) and EO (5 or 10 mg/kg/day) during 10 consecutive days. Subsequently, histological and hematological parameters, cytokines production, oxidative markers and CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were evaluated. RESULTS: The chemical analysis of EO revealed the presence of a high content of monoterpenes, being the main pulegone (76.12%) and menthone (14.28%). The EO oral administration improved mice growth performance and modulated systemic adaptive immune response by increasing in the total leukocyte number. A high percentage of CD4+ T cells were observed whereas the number of CD8+ T cells was not altered. EO did not alter the morpho-physiology of intestine and improved total antioxidant capacity by decreasing MDA concentrations. In addition, EO decreased the IL-6 levels and increased in the IL-4 and IL-10 concentrations. CONCLUSION: Results indicate that M. verticillata EO modulate inflammatory and oxidative parameters constituting a natural alternative which could be applied to improve gastrointestinal and immune functionality in animals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Benign adrenal tumors are commonly discovered on cross-sectional imaging. Mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS) is regularly diagnosed, but its effect on cardiometabolic disease in affected persons is ill defined. OBJECTIVE: To determine cardiometabolic disease burden and steroid excretion in persons with benign adrenal tumors with and without MACS. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: 14 endocrine secondary and tertiary care centers (recruitment from 2011 to 2016). PARTICIPANTS: 1305 prospectively recruited persons with benign adrenal tumors. MEASUREMENTS: Cortisol excess was defined by clinical assessment and the 1-mg overnight dexamethasone-suppression test (serum cortisol: <50 nmol/L, nonfunctioning adrenal tumor [NFAT]; 50 to 138 nmol/L, possible MACS [MACS-1]; >138 nmol/L and absence of typical clinical Cushing syndrome [CS] features, definitive MACS [MACS-2]). Net steroid production was assessed by multisteroid profiling of 24-hour urine by tandem mass spectrometry. RESULTS: Of the 1305 participants, 49.7% had NFAT (n = 649; 64.1% women), 34.6% had MACS-1 (n = 451; 67.2% women), 10.7% had MACS-2 (n = 140; 73.6% women), and 5.0% had CS (n = 65; 86.2% women). Prevalence and severity of hypertension were higher in MACS-2 and CS than NFAT (adjusted prevalence ratios [aPRs] for hypertension: MACS-2, 1.15 [95% CI, 1.04 to 1.27], and CS, 1.37 [CI, 1.16 to 1.62]; aPRs for use of ≥3 antihypertensives: MACS-2, 1.31 [CI, 1.02 to 1.68], and CS, 2.22 [CI, 1.62 to 3.05]). Type 2 diabetes was more prevalent in CS than NFAT (aPR, 1.62 [CI, 1.08 to 2.42]) and more likely to require insulin therapy for MACS-2 (aPR, 1.89 [CI, 1.01 to 3.52]) and CS (aPR, 3.06 [CI, 1.60 to 5.85]). Urinary multisteroid profiling revealed an increase in glucocorticoid excretion from NFAT over MACS-1 and MACS-2 to CS, whereas androgen excretion decreased. LIMITATIONS: Cross-sectional design; possible selection bias. CONCLUSION: A cardiometabolic risk condition, MACS predominantly affects women and warrants regular assessment for hypertension and type 2 diabetes. RESUMO

In this study, four hybrid organic-inorganic compounds (8-H2Q)2[PdCl4] (1), (H2ClQ)2[PdCl4] (2), (H2NQ)2[PdCl4] (3) and (H2MeQ)2[PdCl4]·2H2O (4) (where 8-H2Q = 8-hydroxyquinolinium, H2ClQ = 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinolinium, H2NQ = 5-nitro-8-hydroxyquinolinium and H2MeQ = 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinolinium) were synthesized through organic cation modulation. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis of compounds 1 and 3 indicates that their structures are planar and consist of [PdCl4]2- anions and 8-H2Q or H2NQ cations, respectively. Both ionic components are held together through ionic interactions and hydrogen bonds forming infinite chains linked through π-π interactions to form 2D structures. Furthermore, NMR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and FT-IR spectroscopy were used to explore the synthesized compounds. The DNA interaction, antimicrobial activity, antiproliferative activity, and radical scavenging effect of the compounds were evaluated. The hybrid compounds and their free ligands can interact with the calf thymus DNA via an intercalation mode involving the insertion of the aromatic chromophore between the base pairs of DNA; compound 1 has the highest binding affinity. Moreover, they have high antimicrobial efficacy against the tested 14 strains of microorganisms with minimum inhibitory concentration values ranging from <1.95 to 250 µg/mL. The antiproliferative activity of the compounds was investigated against three different cancer cell lines, and their selectivity was verified on mesenchymal stem cells. Compounds 1 and 2 displayed selective and high cytotoxicity against human lung and breast cancer cells and showed moderate cytotoxicity against colon cancer cells. Accordingly, they might be auspicious candidates for future pharmacological investigations in lung and breast cancer research.

RESUMO

The study aimed to analyze trace elements content in baby purees and fruit juices and to evaluate the health risk of young children. The average daily dose, hazard quotient, hazard index and total diet hazard quotient were calculated to assess the potential health risk on per capita and consumers only groups of infants and toddlers. There was no significant health risk for studied groups regarding the intake of trace elements via purees and juices consumption. Health risk for lead was not estimated since the oral reference dose for this metal was not yet established and PTWI value was withdrawn. The average daily dose of lead for infants (0.32 - 0.46 µg/kg bw/day) and toddlers (2.01 - 2.29 µg/kg bw/day) were in accordance with the daily lead exposure intervals estimated by EFSA. Applying statistical analysis, the products were classified into three groups according to the content of trace elements.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional imaging regularly results in incidental discovery of adrenal tumours, requiring exclusion of adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). However, differentiation is hampered by poor specificity of imaging characteristics. We aimed to validate a urine steroid metabolomics approach, using steroid profiling as the diagnostic basis for ACC. METHODS: We did a prospective multicentre study in adult participants (age ≥18 years) with newly diagnosed adrenal masses. We assessed the accuracy of diagnostic imaging strategies based on maximum tumour diameter (≥4 cm vs <4 cm), imaging characteristics (positive vs negative), and urine steroid metabolomics (low, medium, or high risk of ACC), separately and in combination, using a reference standard of histopathology and follow-up investigations. With respect to imaging characteristics, we also assessed the diagnostic utility of increasing the unenhanced CT tumour attenuation threshold from the recommended 10 Hounsfield units (HU) to 20 HU. FINDINGS: Of 2169 participants recruited between Jan 17, 2011, and July 15, 2016, we included 2017 from 14 specialist centres in 11 countries in the final analysis. 98 (4·9%) had histopathologically or clinically and biochemically confirmed ACC. Tumours with diameters of 4 cm or larger were identified in 488 participants (24·2%), including 96 of the 98 with ACC (positive predictive value [PPV] 19·7%, 95% CI 16·2-23·5). For imaging characteristics, increasing the unenhanced CT tumour attenuation threshold to 20 HU from the recommended 10 HU increased specificity for ACC (80·0% [95% CI 77·9-82·0] vs 64·0% [61·4-66.4]) while maintaining sensitivity (99·0% [94·4-100·0] vs 100·0% [96·3-100·0]; PPV 19·7%, 16·3-23·5). A urine steroid metabolomics result indicating high risk of ACC had a PPV of 34·6% (95% CI 28·6-41·0). When the three tests were combined, in the order of tumour diameter, positive imaging characteristics, and urine steroid metabolomics, 106 (5·3%) participants had the result maximum tumour diameter of 4 cm or larger, positive imaging characteristics (with the 20 HU cutoff), and urine steroid metabolomics indicating high risk of ACC, for which the PPV was 76·4% (95% CI 67·2-84·1). 70 (3·5%) were classified as being at moderate risk of ACC and 1841 (91·3%) at low risk (negative predictive value 99·7%, 99·4-100·0). INTERPRETATION: An unenhanced CT tumour attenuation cutoff of 20 HU should replace that of 10 HU for exclusion of ACC. A triple test strategy of tumour diameter, imaging characteristics, and urine steroid metabolomics improves detection of ACC, which could shorten time to surgery for patients with ACC and help to avoid unnecessary surgery in patients with benign tumours. RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The Human Development Index (HDI), as one of the more complex composite indicators of the level of human potential and quality of life, is a combination of three dimensions (indicators, factors): life expectancy at birth, the middle number of years of education and the expected number of years of schooling combined into a single education index and economic benefits expressed by production, or GDP (gross domestic product) according to purchasing power (PPP US $). METHODS: The same measures and average achievements in the field of health, education, and living standards are presented. The HDI was first developed in 1990 under the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and is published as Human Development Reports (HDR). At present, it has become the most widely used complex indicator suitable for international comparisons and assessments of the achieved development level of a particular country or region. RESULTS: The paper deals specifically with the more perspective view of human development in the Western Balkans, with a series of socio-economic implications for the development policy of the countries under observation. CONCLUSION: The particular significance of the conducted research stems from the fact that in the countries of the Western Balkans are identified factors at the beginning of the transition period were often marginalized in the creation of macroeconomic policies, but in recent years there have been more positive developments in that regard.

RESUMO

The sorption ability of biogenic hydroxyapatite (BHAP) towards heavy metal ions (Pb, Cu, Ni, Cd, and Zn) is compared with functionalized BHAP powders with caffeic acid (CA) and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4-DHBA). The functionalization of the BHAP with either CA or 3,4-DHBA is indicated by the appearance of the colored powders due to the formation of the interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complexes. The detailed characterization of as-prepared and functionalized BHAP samples was performed using transmission electron microscopy, reflection spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and determination of zeta potential. All three sorbents clearly displayed preferential sorption of Pb ions when the total concentration of multi-component equimolar solutions of heavy metal ions is high. It should be emphasized that the sorption capacity of functionalized BHAP with either CA or 3,4-BHAP was found to be higher, up to 60%, compared to as-prepared BHAP without the decrease of selectivity towards Pb ions.

RESUMO

Ameloblastoma is a histologically benign but locally aggressive tumor of the jaws. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to review the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of patients with ameloblastoma of the mandible and maxilla and to report the outcomes of treatment. Our study population was made up of a series of 30 consecutively presenting patients-15 men and 15 women, aged 19 to 81 years (median: 61.5)-who had undergone their primary treatment of ameloblastoma of the mandible or maxilla at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center from January 1987 through December 2012. In addition to demographic data, we compiled information on clinical characteristics, imaging findings, the type of surgery, surgical margins, adjuvant treatments, histologic patterns, length of follow-up, time to recurrence, treatment of recurrence, and factors that had an influence on recurrence. All but 2 patients with negative margins were cured. Favorable outcomes were associated with the administration of adjuvant postoperative radiotherapy for patients with positive margins and a repeat resection for patients with recurrences. Complete excision with negative margins, however, remains the gold standard for curative treatment.

RESUMO

Mesalamine (5-ASA) consists of the first-line therapy for the treatment of ulcerative colitis; however, it has low bioavailability, can cause several systemic adverse events, and has low treatment adherence due to the inconvenient dosing scheme. In this work, a new drug delivery system consisting of chondroitin sulfate linked to 5-ASA was synthesized using a carbodiimide as conjugating agent. The system was characterized by spectroscopic techniques (UV, ATR-FTIR, XRD, and NMR 1H) and thermal analysis (TG/DTG and DSC), suggesting the conjugation between the drug and the polymer. The in vitro release and the corresponding kinetics were also evaluated, revealing that approximately 40% of the drug linked was released at pH9 for up to 50h, following Higuchi's model. The conjugate did not show cytotoxicity for the human monocytic cell line at the doses tested, and an in vivo biodistribution study showed that the conjugate remained in the lower GIT for up to 8h with no uptake in the upper GIT. These data corroborate with the radiation found per segment of GIT and in blood. For this last test the conjugate was radiolabeled with Technetium-99m to allow the scintigraphy evaluation and radiation quantification. In conclusion, the polymeric conjugate was successfully synthesized and demonstrated a mucoadhesiveness on the colon as desired, thus supporting its potential use in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.

RESUMO

The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of cadmium (Cd) concentration in the soil on its uptake by tobacco plants, and to compare the ability of diverse extraction procedures for determining Cd bioavailability and predicting soil-to-plant transfer and Cd plant concentrations. The pseudo-total digestion procedure, modified Tessier sequential extraction and six standard single-extraction tests for estimation of metal mobility and bioavailability were used for the leaching of Cd from a native soil, as well as samples artificially contaminated over a wide range of Cd concentrations. The results of various leaching tests were compared between each other, as well as with the amounts of Cd taken up by tobacco plants in pot experiments. In the native soil sample, most of the Cd was found in fractions not readily available under natural conditions, but with increasing pollution level, Cd amounts in readily available forms increased. With increasing concentrations of Cd in the soil, the quantity of pollutant taken up in tobacco also increased, while the transfer factor (TF) decreased. Linear and non-linear empirical models were developed for predicting the uptake of Cd by tobacco plants based on the results of selected leaching tests. The non-linear equations for ISO 14870 (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extraction - DTPA), ISO/TS 21268-2 (CaCl2 leaching procedure), US EPA 1311 (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure - TCLP) single step extractions, and the sum of the first two fractions of the sequential extraction, exhibited the best correlation with the experimentally determined concentrations of Cd in plants over the entire range of pollutant concentrations. This approach can improve and facilitate the assessment of human exposure to Cd by tobacco smoking, but may also have wider applicability in predicting soil-to-plant transfer.
