RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between oral health status and all-cause mortality in older adults using prospective cohort study design. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: In total, 12 809 adults aged ≥70 years (54.3% females) were participants of the ASPREE Longitudinal Study of Older Persons (ALSOP). METHODS: Participants self-reported the presence of natural teeth and oral health status. The association of self-reported oral health, edentulism and the integrative measure of the two with all-cause mortality were explored using the Cox-regression models adjusted for age, gender, socio-economic status, health-related behaviours, weight status, aspirin and polypharmacy. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. RESULTS: In total, 22.2% of participants reported edentulism and 13.8% had fair/poor oral health. After adjustment for confounders, risk of all-cause mortality was higher among those with edentulism (vs. no edentulism) HR (95% CI) 1.43 (1.18, 1.73); and those with edentulism and reporting poor/fair oral health HR (95% CI) 1.69 (1.02, 2.82), or with no edentulism but reporting poor/fair oral health HR (95% CI) 1.46 (1.19-1.80) vs. no edentulism and reporting good/very good/excellent oral health. No association was observed between self-reported oral health alone and all-cause mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of all-cause mortality was 69% higher among older adults reporting both edentulism and poor/fair oral health compared with those with teeth and more favourable self-reported oral health. © 2023 Australian Dental Association.

RESUMO

Objective was to compare the rate of successful treatment of hsPDA based on echocardiogram criteria after use of IV acetaminophen or IV indomethacin in very low-birthweight infants. The study was a multi-center, randomized controlled trial. Infants born prior to 32 weeks with birthweight ≤ 1500 g were included if PDA treatment was indicated within the 21 days after birth. hsPDA was defined by strict echocardiogram criteria. Eligible infants were randomized to treatment with either IV acetaminophen or IV indomethacin. Of 86 eligible infants, 17 infants were randomized to acetaminophen and 20 to indomethacin. One (5.9%) hsPDA in the acetaminophen group had successful treatment compared to 11 (55%) in the indomethacin group (p = 0.002). Eight (47%) in the acetaminophen group and 3 (15%) in the indomethacin group received transcatheter PDA closure (p = 0.07). IV indomethacin was more effective than IV acetaminophen for treatment of hsPDAs. More infants in the acetaminophen group received transcatheter closure.

RESUMO

A variety of pharmacologic agents are currently available to treat house rabbits. In many cases, dosages are based on extrapolation from other species or empirical data. Dosing in rabbits is further complicated by individual variation. An understanding of rabbit physiology and the pharmacology of prescribed medications helps ensure that the agents are used as effectively and safely as possible. In this article, basic rabbit pharmacobiology is reviewed and techniques for drug administration are described. A formulary for house rabbits is provided.

RESUMO

As ferrets are anatomically and physiologically similar to dogs and cats, the basic elements of ferret examination, disease processes, and preventive health are familiar to small-animal practitioners. Like other domestic carnivores, ferrets are tolerant of handling and medical procedures, especially compared with rabbits, rodents, and most nondomestic mammals. These characteristics make ferrets amenable to many of the highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic techniques that are now available in small-animal practice. Veterinarians who wish to add ferrets to their practices should be familiar with the ferret literature, but they should not forget to draw from the wealth of knowledge in canine and feline medicine when managing unusual or difficult ferret cases.

RESUMO

The sound attenuation characteristics of two military helmets were measured using an acoustic manikin as the test apparatus. The manikin results are compared to the results of attenuation measurements made on human subjects wearing identical helmets. The testing room and instrumentation were the same for both the manikin and human subjects. Procedures in ANSI S3.19-1974 were used in the real-ear attentuation at threshold (REAT) part of this study. The results are encouraging as they suggest that the manikin may be used in place of a panel of human subjects to evaluate the hearing protection characteristics of military head gear.
