RESUMO

Nurses are at high risk of burnout, desire to leave the profession, and possibly missed nursing care due to the exhausting nature of caring. Missed nursing care may also affect nurses' burnout and desire to leave the profession. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the missed nursing care and its relationship with burnout and desire to leave the profession among intensive care unit nurses. The participants of this descriptive analytical study were 249 Iranian nurses working in intensive care units in 2022. The data were collected using a Demographic Information Questionnaire, Kalish's Missed Nursing Care Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and desire to leave the profession questionnaire. The majority of nurses (71%) were females. The generalized linear regression model showed that there was a significant relationship between missed care with gender (B = 5.55, P < .001), marital status (B = -7.37, P = .04), working shift (B = 7.80, P < .001), and employment status (B = -2.87, P = .02). Using structural equation modeling, it was found that the effect of missed care on burnout was significant. Considering the effect of missed care on burnout among nurses working in intensive care units, it seems that creating better working conditions, providing sufficient resources for nurses, supporting them, and changing the factors affecting missed care in order to improve the conditions can reduce the possibility of missing nursing care and, finally, burnout.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Understanding the predictors of functional status can be useful for improving modifiable predictors or identifying at-risk populations. Researchers have examined the predictors of functional status in older adults, but there has not been sufficient study in this field in older adults with multiple chronic conditions, especially in Iran. Consequently, the results of this body of research may not be generalizable to Iran. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the predictors of functional status in Iranian older adults with multiple chronic conditions. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 118 Iranian older adults with multiple chronic conditions were recruited from December 2022 to September 2023. They were invited to respond to questionnaires inquiring about their demographic and health information, basic activities of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), depression and cognitive status. The predictors included age, gender, marital status, education, number of chronic conditions, and depression. Descriptive and analytical statistical tests (univariate and multiple regression analysis) were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The majority of participants were married (63.9%) and women (59.3%). Based on the results of the multiple regression analysis, age (B=-0.04, P = 0.04), depression (B=-0.12, P = 0.04), and IADL (B = 0.46, P < 0.001) were significant predictors for functional status in terms of BADL. Also, marital status (B=-0.51, P = 0.05), numbers of chronic conditions (B=-0.61, P = 0.002), and BADL (B = 0.46, P < 0.001) were significant predictors for functional status in terms of IADL. CONCLUSION: The findings support the predictive ability of age, marital status, number of chronic diseases, and depression for the functional status. Older adults with multiple chronic conditions who are older, single, depressed and with more chronic conditions number are more likely to have limitations in functional status. Therefore, nurses and other health care providers can benefit from the results of this study and identify and pay more attention to the high risk older adult population.

RESUMO

Background and Purpose: Patients on hemodialysis often struggle with their body image. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the body image concern questionnaire for the first time in hemodialysis patients in Iran. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 400 hemodialysis patients from Iran were assessed using the Body Image Concern Inventory (BICI). By using exploratory factor analysis (EFA; with Maximum Likelihood Factor Analysis and Promax Rotation) and confirmatory factor analysis, the construct validity of BICI was assessed. To check for internal consistency, the average interitem correlation, Cronbach's alpha, and McDonald's omega coefficients were used. Stability was assessed with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: The participants' average age was 53.2 (SD = 13.2) years, and more than half of them were women (54.60%). Four factors extracted from exploratory factor analysis (EFA) show that the total cumulative variance explained by these factors was 44.46% of the total variance. Item factor loadings varied between 0.415 and 0.970. Internal consistency coefficients were considered acceptable (>0.7). Also, stability was evaluated as good (ICC = .839). Conclusions: The Farsi version of the BICI scale as a self-report measure of concerns about dysmorphic appearance has 19 items and shows acceptable reliability and validity. Consequently, the scale can be used by nurses to evaluate body image among Farsi-speaking hemodialysis patients, which can help them to take necessary actions to decrease the level of concerns in these patients.

RESUMO

Introduction: The psychometric properties of the body esteem scale have not been assessed in Iran. Therefore, the aim of this study was to translate and determine the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the body esteem scale among Iranian adolescents. Methods: The sample of this methodological study consisted of 504 adolescents [mean age: 16.55 (SD = 1.54) years] living in Tehran City, Iran. After translation of the scale, its content validity (quantitative and qualitative) and structural (exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis), convergent, and discriminant validity were evaluated. Exploratory graph analysis was performed to determine the number of factors. Cronbach's alpha, composite reliability, and maximal reliability were calculated. Results: In the content validity evaluation step, all items had acceptable scores and were retained. The results of exploratory factor analysis with Promax rotation and exploratory graph analysis extracted three factors accounting for 49.49% of the variance, comprising 18 items. Furthermore, after necessary modifications during CFA, the final model was approved. Convergent and discriminant validity were confirmed. Cronbach's alpha, CR, and MaxR for all constructs were greater than 0.7, demonstrating good internal consistency and construct reliability. Conclusion: According to the results, the Persian version of the body esteem scale has a valid structure and acceptable reliability. Health professionals, in many ways, can use this scale.

RESUMO

This review study fills an important gap by aiming to determine the age changes in attempted and completed suicide in Iran during the past decade. A systematic review of related articles in international and Iranian databases from January 2008 to January 2020 was first conducted and relevant studies were extracted based on established criteria. Results showed that the mean age of suicide in Iran is 29.8 (range 27.7 - 31.8) years old for men and 27.4 (range 25.8 - 28.9) for women (P < 0.0001). The youngest and oldest populations of completed suicide belong to eastern and central regions of the country respectively. Findings imply the critical importance of increasing awareness through educational programs and public health campaigns to increase awareness and reduce suicidal behavior in Iran.

RESUMO

Depression can lead to increased medical costs, impaired individual and social functioning, nonadherence to therapeutic proceeding, and even suicide and ultimately affect quality of life. It is important to know the extent of its prevalence for successful planning in this regard. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of depression in the Iranian elderly. This systematic review and meta-analysis study was done through Medline via PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, ProQuest, SID, Embase, and Magiran with determined keywords. Screening was done on the basis of relevance to the purpose of the study, titles, abstracts, full text, and inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of the articles was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa standard scale. After primary and secondary screening, 30 articles were finally included in the study. According to the 30 articles reviewed, the prevalence of depression in the Iranian elderly was 52 percent based on the random-effects model (CI 95%: 46-58). According to the results of the present study, depression in the Iranian elderly was moderate to high. Therefore, more exact assessment in terms of depression screening in elderly people seems necessary. Coherent and systematic programs, including psychosocial empowerment counselling for the elderly and workshops for their families, are also needed. Researchers can also use the results of this study for future research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Considering the importance of sleep in the treatment success and quality of life in patients with cancer, it is necessary to seek effective solutions to improve their sleep quality. In this regard, a comprehensive review of the effect of melatonin on sleep can be very useful to provide an evidence-based clinical guide. Therefore, the aim of the present systematic review was to investigate effect of melatonin on sleep quality and insomnia in patients with cancer. METHODS: The present systematic review was conducted in 2021. To find evidence related to the study objective, Iranian databases (SID, Magiran) and international databases (Google scholar, Web of Science, ProQuest, Medline via PubMed, Scopus) were searched using specified keywords (Melatonin, Sleep, insomnia, Cancer, Neoplasms, Carcinomas, Tumor, Carcinomatosis, Carcinomatoses, Sarcomas) from the beginning of the establishment of the mentioned databases until 31st December of 2020. After primary and secondary screening, and selection of studies according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, information obtained from studies were extracted in a checklist with items such as author (year), study design, sample size, age, melatonin dose, duration of intervention, results, and conclusion. RESULTS: From 295 articles found, finally six relevant studies entered the review process. The intervention used in the studies included oral melatonin administration. The minimum and maximum dose of melatonin was 3 mg and 20 mg, respectively, which was taken by patients for 10 days and to four months, usually every night before bedtime in studies. The results of the review showed that melatonin had a significant effect on sleep quality and insomnia in four studies. However, two studies showed no significant improvement on sleep quality after the intervention and melatonin administration, although melatonin had significant effect on increasing sleep efficiency in the short term. CONCLUSIONS: The present review study showed that melatonin may be effective in improving sleep quality and insomnia in patients with cancer. It is suggested to carry out further extensive and detailed studies to achieve the most effective and safest method of melatonin administration in terms of dose and duration of use in order to improve sleep quality among patients with cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients undergoing continuous hemodialysis experience the arteriovenous fistula puncture-related pain approximately 300 times per year. Pain management is important priorities in painful procedures. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis study was conducted to determine the effect of cryotherapy on arteriovenous fistula puncture-related pain in hemodialysis patients. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis study was conducted by searching the related article with using the keywords including Cryotherapy, Ice, Punctures, Catheterization, Pain, and Fistula (using AND & OR operators) through Iranian (including SID, and Magiran) and international databases (including Embase, Web of Science, Medline via PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest). Interventional studies in English or Persian languages were included in the study without time limitation. Finally, after excluding duplicates, screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and quality assessment (based on the JADAD standard checklist), 8 studies entered the systematic review process (Qualitative Synthesis) and 6 studies entered the meta-analysis process (Quantitative Synthesis). RESULTS: Based on the results of the review, the included studies were conducted between 2008-2017. The total number of participants in all studies obtained through systematic review (8 studies) was 422 with an age of 16 years old and above. The review of studies showed a positive effect of cryotherapy on reducing the arteriovenous fistula puncture-related pain in hemodialysis patients. CONCLUSION: Regarding the positive effect of cryotherapy on arteriovenous fistula puncture-related pain, cryotherapy as a low-risk and uncomplicated procedure seems to be effective and useful in reducing pain and ultimately reducing its unpleasant psychological and physical side effects.

RESUMO

Introduction: Depression is considered as one of the most serious health issues worldwide, and the search for the most effective and safe treatments for depression is essential. Aromatherapy with lavender have attracted the attention of many researchers due to their low cost and ease of use, so this study was conducted to review of the effects of aromatherapy with lavender essential oil on depression. Methods: This systematic review study was conducted by searching the databases (SID, Magiran, Google-Scholar, Medline via PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) by using the keywords such as depression, Lavandula, Lavender, and Aromatherapy, as well as applying OR and AND operators to the end of January 1, 2020 A.D. The inclusion criteria were: 1) Interventional studies that determined keywords were in the title or keywords of the article, 2) aromatherapy was conducted through inhalation or massage, 3) the full text of paper was accessible, and 4) published in English or Persian. Finally, the information obtained from articles was extracted using a checklist. Results: Out of 278 studies, 9 studies were included to the systematic review process after screening and eliminating duplicate papers according to the purpose of the study. Aromatherapy with lavender essential oil was conducted on the patients suffering from migraine, patients with the acute coronary syndrome, patients undergoing hemodialysis, community-dwelling older adult, and postpartum depression. The results obtained from some studies showed the positive effect of aromatherapy with lavender essential oil on depression whereas some studies did not report the effect of aromatherapy with lavender on depression significantly. Conclusions: It seems that aromatherapy with lavender probably can be used as a complementary, simple, and inexpensive method to improve mild and moderate depression. It is recommended to earmark using a collaborative approach and make use of interdisciplinary and psychology specialists as well as complementary medicine in applying aromatherapy with lavender essential oil.
