RESUMO

Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans are two important pathogens in public health due to the infections they cause in immunocompromised patients and with hospital stay, increasing morbimortality rates. Three groups of Cu2O, ZnO, and Ag/Cu2O nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized physicochemically and confronted to P. aeruginosa and C. albicans to determine their antibacterial effect. Statistical analyses were performed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) (p < 0.001). The structures of Cu2O, ZnO, and Ag/Cu2O nanoparticles were spherical, sized 6 nm, 10 nm, and 50 nm for Ag, Cu2, and Zn metals, respectively. Furthermore, a 100% antibacterial and antifungal effect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans was observed for Cu2O, ZnO, and Ag/Cu2O nanoparticles respectively. It is concluded from these findings that the nanoparticles synthesized by biogenic and chemical route had a good size between 6 and 50 nm and that Cu2O, ZnO, and Ag/Cu2O nanoparticles presented an excellent antibacterial (100% growth inhibition) effect against P. aeruginosa and C. albicans (p < 0.001) compared to the control.

RESUMO

A combined theoretical and experimental study was performed to elucidate the photocatalytic potential of tenorite, CuO (1 1 0) and to assess the evolution pathway of carbon dioxide (CO2) evolution pathway. The calculations were performed with density functional theory (DFT) at a DFT + U + J0 and spin polarized level. The CuO was experimentally synthesized and characterized with structural and optical methodologies. The band structure and density of states revealed the rise of band gaps at 1.24 and 1.03 eV with direct and indirect band gap nature, respectively. These values are in accordance with the experimental evidence at 1.28 and 0.96 eV; respectively, which were obtained by UV-Vis DRS. Such a behavior could be related to enhanced photocatalytic activity among copper oxide materials. Experimental evidence such as SEM images and work function measurements were also performed to evaluate the oxide. The redox potential suggests a catalytic character of tenorite (1 1 0) for the CO2 transformation through aldehydes (methanal) intermediate formation. Furthermore, a route through methylene glycol CH2(OH)2 was also explored with the theoretical methodology. The reaction path exhibits an immediate reduction of Image 1 into a •OH radical and an [OH]- anion, in the first step. This •OH radical attacks a double bond (C = O) of Image 2 to form bicarbonate ([Image 3]-) and subsequently, carbonic acid (Image 4). The carbonic acid reacts with other •OH radical to finally form orthocarbonic acid (Image 5).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of porokeratosis can be challenging, and knowledge about its dermoscopic features is limited. OBJECTIVES: To describe the dermoscopic features of porokeratosis of Mibelli and disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis (DSAP) and the frequency of these features in a larger case series. The interobserver concordance was also assessed. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, members of the International Dermoscopy Society contributed macroscopic and dermoscopic images of histopathologically verified cases of porokeratosis of Mibelli or DSAP. Three observers independently reviewed the collected images to identify the presence of predefined dermoscopic features. Following this, a consensus meeting was held to agree upon which dermoscopic features were present in each lesion. RESULTS: In total, 78 clinical and dermoscopic images of porokeratoses were collected. The most common dermoscopic feature was keratin rim, which was present in 74 lesions (92.3%). The most common vascular structures were dotted or glomerular vessels which were present in almost half of the cases (48.7%). Other relatively frequent dermoscopic findings were as follows: non-peripheral scales (44.9%), grey-brown dots or pigmentation along the keratin rim (38.5%), and light-brown pigmentation within the keratin rim (33.3%). Shiny white structures and blood spots or erosions along the keratin rim were findings never before described in porokeratosis and were detected in 16.7% and 17.9% of the lesions, respectively. Dermoscopic findings in porokeratosis of Mibelli and DSAP were similar except for fewer blood spots or erosions along the keratin rim and more light-brown pigmentation within the keratin rim in DSAP. The interobserver concordance ranged from 0.44 (moderate) to 0.84 (almost perfect). CONCLUSIONS: The dermoscopic hallmark of porokeratosis is the keratin rim, a finding also allowing for almost perfect interobserver agreement. Pigmentation or erosions along the keratin rim, vascular structures, as well as scales, pigmentation or shiny white structures within the keratin rim are additional dermoscopic clues.

RESUMO

The objective was to use noninvasive measurements to formulate equations for predicting the abdominal fat weight of laying hens in a noninvasive manner. Hens were fed with different diets; the external body measurements of birds were used as regressors. We used 288 Hy-Line Brown laying hens, distributed in a completely randomized design in a factorial arrangement, submitted for 16 wk to 2 metabolizable energy levels (2,550 and 2,800 kcal/kg) and 3 levels of crude protein in the diet (150, 160, and 170 g/kg), totaling 6 treatments, with 48 hens each. Sixteen hens per treatment of 92 wk age were utilized to evaluate body weight, bird length, tarsus and sternum, greater and lesser diameter of the tarsus, and abdominal fat weight, after slaughter. The equations were obtained by using measures evaluated with regressors through simple and multiple linear regression with the stepwise method of indirect elimination (backward), with P < 0.10 for all variables remaining in the model. The weight of abdominal fat as predicted by the equations and observed values for each bird were subjected to Pearson's correlation analysis. The equations generated by energy levels showed coefficients of determination of 0.50 and 0.74 for 2,800 and 2,550 kcal/kg of metabolizable energy, respectively, with correlation coefficients of 0.71 and 0.84, with a highly significant correlation between the calculated and observed values of abdominal fat. For protein levels of 150, 160, and 170 g/kg in the diet, it was possible to obtain coefficients of determination of 0.75, 0.57, and 0.61, with correlation coefficients of 0.86, 0.75, and 0.78, respectively. Regarding the general equation for predicting abdominal fat weight, the coefficient of determination was 0.62; the correlation coefficient was 0.79. The equations for predicting abdominal fat weight in laying hens, based on external measurements of the birds, showed positive coefficients of determination and correlation coefficients, thus allowing researchers to determine abdominal fat weight in vivo.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare the cervical column posture and the upper airway dimensions between sleep bruxist and non-bruxist young adults. Twenty-three sleep-grinders and 22 asymptomatic subjects, selected according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) criteria (report by a sleep partner and the presence of dental wear, according to Wetselaar et al.), were evaluated. The mean age was 23·8 years (range 18-30). All the subjects had complete permanent dentition and skeletal and occlusal class I. A digital cephalometric radiograph with natural head posture was performed for each subject. The craniocervical posture was traced and evaluated according to Solow and Tallgren, and the airway dimensions of the oropharynx and nasopharynx were evaluated in agreement with Sayinsu. The data were analysed with independent-samples t-tests and Mann-Whitney U-test. Significance was set at P < 0·05. Sleep bruxist young adults presented more forwarded cervical column posture and narrower measures of the oropharynx, when compared with controls (P < 0·05). As in children, anterior cervical column posture was found to be associated with sleep bruxism.

RESUMO

Blastocystis hominis is a common human parasite with infection rates up to 50% in developing countries, and giardiasis is the commonest intestinal one in Mexico. No doubt, various parasites as Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica can cause rheumatic diseases. This study coproparasitoscopic analysis evaluated the cysts by B. hominis, G. lamblia, E. hartmani, E. coli and E. histolytica in Mexican rheumatic disease patients. Also, ELISA was used to detect E. histolytica, Ascaris lumbricoides, Toxocara canis, and Trichinella spiralis in Mexican patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Thirty-six patients (24 with AS and 12 with RA) and 77 healthy control individuals were enrolled in this study. The frequencies of protozoan cysts were comparable in rheumatic disease patients (AS and RA) and healthy control donors (33 and 25 vs. 26%, respectively; p > 0.05). The frequency of antibodies to T. canis was significantly higher in AS patients than in healthy control donors (16 vs. 2.6%, respectively; p = 0.027), whereas no differences were observed for the prevalence of antibodies for the other parasites (E. histolytica, A. lumbricoides and T. spiralis) (p > 0.05). This information indicates the need to intensify educational efforts for the prevention of parasite infections associated with AS disease that cannot be controlled only by drugs.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: The object of the present study was to establish the relationship between the size an body segments in Colombian adult subjects, to get an equation that allows to estimate the size from those segments and confront it with those described in the literature. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Group 1: Subjects over 18 years were chosen without deformities, amputations neither edemas. Age, sex, weight, size, forearm length (Fl), lower segment length (LSL), navel-heel length (NHL), navel-malleolus length (NML), lower member length (LML), knee height (KH), knee-external malleolus length (KML). Group 2: The same variables were quantified and to these subjects were established the accuracy and precision of the obtained equations and were confronted with those described in the literature. Statistical analysis. The gotten results were analyzed by means of the Student "t" test, correlation analysis, and simple linear regression and multiple step by step. An alpha error of 5% was accepted. RESULTS: 189 subjects were evaluated in group 1 and 180 in group 2. 23 male and 156 female 37.5 +/- 17.5 years old and a size of 161.2 cm +/- 9.6 cm. There was a significant correlation (p < 0.0001) between size and all the measured segments. Predictive size regression equations were established choosing the following segments: FL, NML, KML, because of their easy determination, precise reference points and high "t". The estimated size was not significantly different from the real one just in those that use KML, age an sex: Male: Size = (KML x 1.21) - (0.117 x age) + 119.6. Female: Size = (KML x 1.263) - (0.159 x age) + 107.7. The equations described by Chumlea et al. using the KH just predict the size adequately in male, but overestimate it in female. CONCLUSIONS: 1. The equations using the KML predict the size in the colombian studied sample. 2. The Chumlea equations only adequately predict the size of the male colombian subjects.
