RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) are highly toxic and widespread in every environmental compartment. Some of metabolic products such as amino/nitro containing chlorinated aromatic compounds can be determined by gas chromatography coupled with electron capture detector (GC-ECD). However, it is difficult to identify some of chlorophenolic and chloroquinolic intermediates produced from PCNB and HCB by the above mentioned technique. Therefore, for analysis of these compounds and their metabolites, we have developed a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) based method. RESULTS: The extraction of PCNB and HCB from soil and minimal salt medium was carried out with ethyl acetate and hexane respectively with good recoveries (98% for PCNB and 97% for HCB). The validation of the proposed extraction and HPLC method was done by analysis of PCNB and HCB biodegradation and their metabolites identification from anaerobic enriched soil samples. CONCLUSION: A rapid, sensitive and simple HPLC based analytical method was developed for the analysis of PCNB, HCB and their possible intermediates.

RESUMO

The thinning behavior of liquid films between free bubbles and silica is investigated using the interferometric technique. Stable films were obtained at higher salt concentrations compared to previous studies because of the improved cleaning procedure. In contrast to the captive bubble technique used in the past, the free bubble method employed more closely approximates such processes as flotation. The results obtained for aqueous films at low and high ionic strengths are in better agreement with theoretical predictions than those in previous studies. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.

RESUMO

A scheme for the prediction of surface tension from bulk properties of polymer melts was previously developed. It is based on a combination of Guggenheim's empirical temperature function with a hole or free volume fraction, derived in lattice-hole theory. This approach is now extended to oligomeric species, typified by n-alkanes. Successful results for surface tension and its temperature coefficient ensue. As to further applications to high polymers, a satisfactory outcome is obtained for absolute values and temperature coefficients in the majority of the numerous instances of structurally diverse systems. This encourages predictions for some high T(g) systems, and mixtures, where experimental information is not available. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

RESUMO

To reach cancer cells in a tumor, a blood-borne therapeutic molecule or cell must make its way into the blood vessels of the tumor and across the vessel wall into the interstitium, and finally migrate through the interstitium. Unfortunately, tumors often develop in ways that hinder each of these steps. Our research goals are to analyze each of these steps experimentally and theoretically, and then integrate the resulting information in a unified theoretical framework. This paradigm of analysis and synthesis has allowed us to obtain a better understanding of physiological barriers in solid tumors, and to develop novel strategies to exploit and/or to overcome these barriers for improved cancer detection and treatment.
