RESUMO

Background: Genetics, environment, and ethnic factors are major contributors to the prevalence and variations of malocclusion. Aim: The aim of study was to determine the prevalence of interarch problems in school-aged children, 9 - 11 years, living in Tehran; and to describe the role of ethnicity, education, and economic status on them. Methods: The present data were part of the Comprehensive Evaluation of Skeleto-Dental Anomalies (CESDA) study conducted in 2015 among children living in Tehran, Iran. Cluster random sampling was applied among 19 districts of Tehran. A total of 38 schools were selected, and out of 1585 participants, the data of 1429 children were collected (response rate = 90%). The Chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis were used for statistical analyses. Results: Of all participants, 758 were boys and 671 were girls. The mean age was 121 ± 8 months. The most significant background determinants associated with molar relationship were ethnicity and place of residence. Class I right molar relationship was seen in 57.9% of the children and was generally more frequent in boys. Normal overjet was observed in 47.1%; 41.5% had an increased overjet, 16.2% had an anteroposterior cross-bite, and 11.8% had a lateral cross-bite. Midline discrepancy was seen among 61.1% of the children. Ideal anteroposterior, vertical, and horizontal relationship were observed in 31%, 53%, and 34% of the children, respectively. Only 10% of the children aged 9 - 11 years old had an ideal interarch relationship. Gender and place of residence had persistently significant association with having an ideal anteroposterior, vertical, horizontal, and interarch relationships (P < 0.002) in all four binary logistic regression models. Conclusions: The majority of the children aged 9 - 11 years old have at least one interarch problem, although it is commonly preventable. Relevance for Patients: Early detection of children's orthodontic problems may help with effective prevention of further advanced anomalies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the combination of zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) and chitosan NPs on the shear bond strength (SBS) of composites used for orthodontic bonding. METHODS: Four groups of composites (n = 10), containing 0%, 1%, 5%, and 10% w/w NP fillers, respectively, were used to bond brackets to the surfaces of 40 intact bovine incisors. After 1000 rounds of thermal cycling at 5°C-55°C, all specimens were mounted in acrylic blocks. The SBS was tested using a universal testing machine, and the adhesive remnant index scores were registered using a stereomicroscope. Data were statistically analyzed using a 1-way ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: The highest value of mean SBS was found in the control group, and the lowest value was found in the group with composite containing 10% NPs. The adhesive remnant index did not differ significantly among the groups (P = 0.823). CONCLUSIONS: Incorporation of 1% and 5% zinc oxide and chitosan NPs had no effect on the SBS of composite, and the obtained SBS values were similar to that of the control group.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to determine the impacts of orthognathic surgery on soft tissue on frontal and profile views and their relation with patient's quality of life. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with severe skeletal class III malocclusion who were candidate for bimaxillary orthognathic surgery consisted of 1-piece Lefort I surgery with bilateral sagittal split osteotomy were selected. Oral health was assessed by short from of Oral Health Impact Profile-14 questionnaire. Facial anthropometric measurements were conducted before starting any treatment and 6 months after orthognathic surgery according to Farkas anthropometric study. The correlation between facial changes due to treatment and oral health were tested by Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed in Oral Health Impact Profile-14 scores with regard to genders. Decreased vermilion total upper lip height index correlates positively with feeling difficult to relax. Increasing in medial-lateral cutaneous upper lip height index correlates negatively with dissatisfaction with diet. Increased upper face-face height index correlates positively with feeling uncomfortable to eat any foods and feeling a bit irritable with other people. CONCLUSION: Oral health-related quality of life can be affected not only by the objective aesthetic criterion but also by different factors like their attitude toward aesthetic, surgery side effects.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Plaque accumulation and bond failure are drawbacks of orthodontic treatment, which requires composite for bonding of brackets. As the antimicrobial properties of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been proven, the aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and mechanical properties of composite resins modified by the addition of TiO2 NPs. METHODS: Orthodontics composite containing 0%, 1%, 5% and 10% NPs were prepared. 180 composite disks were prepared for elution test, disk agar diffusion test and biofilm inhibition test to collect the counts of microorganisms on three days, measure the inhibition diameter and quantify the viable counts of colonies consequently. For shear bond strength (SBS) test, 48 intact bovine incisors were divided into four groups. Composites containing 0%, 1%, 5% and 10% NPs were used for bonding of bracket. The bracket/tooth SBS was measured by using an universal testing machine. RESULTS: All concentration of TiO2 NPs had a significant effect on creation and extension of inhibition zone. For S. mutans and S. sanguinis, all concentration of TiO2 NPs caused reduction of the colony counts. Composite containing 10% TiO2 NPs had significant effect on reduction of colony counts for S. mutans and S. sanguinis in all three days. The highest mean shear bond strength belonged to the control group, while the lowest value was seen in 10% NPs composite. CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles into composite resins confer antibacterial properties to adhesives, while the mean shear bond of composite containing 1% and 5% NPs still in an acceptable range.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of conventional and high-power light emitting diode (LED) light curing units on shear bond strength (SBS) of metal and ceramic brackets to tooth surface. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty sound bovine maxillary central incisors were used for the study. The teeth were divided into four groups (n=10). Teeth surfaces were etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 20 seconds. After applying a uniform layer of adhesive primer on the etched enamel, composite was placed on the base of brackets. The samples were light cured according to the manufacturer's instructions and thermocycled. The SBS was measured. The failure mode was scored using the adhesive remnant index (ARI). RESULTS: The mean SBS of samples in groups A (high-power LED, metal bracket), B (high-power LED, ceramic bracket), C (conventional LED, metal bracket) and D (conventional LED, ceramic bracket) was 23.1±3.69, 10.7±2.06, 24.92±6.37 and 10.74±3.18MPa, respectively. The interaction effect of type of LED unit (high-power/conventional) and bracket type on SBS was not statistically significant (P=0.483). In general, type of LED unit did not affect SBS. Type of bracket significantly affected SBS (P<0.001). The ARI score was not significantly influenced by the interaction between the type of LED unit and bracket. CONCLUSIONS: The obtained SBS is the same for both bracket types by use of high-power and conventional LED light curing units. Regardless of the type of LED unit, SBS of ceramic brackets was significantly lower than that of metal brackets.
