Concerns about inappropriate disposal of waste into unsanitary municipal solid waste landfills around the world have been on the increase, and this poses a public health challenge due to leachate production. The neurotoxic effect of Gwagwalada landfill leachate (GLL) was investigated in male adult Wistar rats. Rats were exposed to a 10% concentration of GLL for 21 days. The control group received tap water for the same period of the experiment. Our results showed that neurobehavior, absolute body and brain weights and brain histomorphology as well as parvalbumin interneurons were severely altered, with consequent astrogliosis and microgliosis after 21 days of administrating GLL. Specifically, there was severe loss and shrinkage of Purkinje cells, with their nucleus, and severe diffused vacuolations of the white matter tract of GLL-exposed rat brains. There was severe cell loss in the granular layer of the cerebellum resulting in a reduced thickness of the layer. Also, there was severe loss of dendritic arborization of the Purkinje cells in GLL-exposed rat brains, and damage as well as reduced populations of parvalbumin-containing fast-spiking GABAergic interneurons in various regions of the brain. In conclusion, data from the present study demonstrated the detrimental effects of Gwagwalada landfill leachate on the brain which may be implicated in neuropsychological conditions.

BACKGROUND: Large vestibular aqueduct syndrome (LVAS) is an auditory disorder that is difficult to diagnose and manage; it is confirmed when the vestibular aqueduct is >1.5 mm in diameter. Diagnosis of LVAS in children can devastate parents and challenge healthcare professionals who serve these patients and their families. PURPOSE: This study surveyed parents of children with LVAS about their knowledge of and experiences with LVAS and their attitudes about the support provided to them by healthcare professionals. This study also surveyed audiologists about their knowledge of and experiences with LVAS and their level of confidence in serving families with children having this disorder. RESEARCH DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. STUDY SAMPLE: 100 parents, mostly mothers, and 144 audiologists responded to invitations to participate in surveys designed to elicit information about their knowledge of, experiences with, and attitudes toward LVAS. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Invitations via links to participate in a survey on surveymonkey.com were posted in LVAS support group pages on Facebook.com for parents and sent to audiologists randomly selected from the American Academy of Audiology Membership Directory. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze trends in parents' and audiologists' responses. RESULTS: A response rate could not be obtained for the parents' survey because it was impossible to know how many parents actually viewed the invitation to participate via Facebook.com. The response rate for the audiologists' survey was 10%. Most of the parents reported that their children had clinical trajectories similar to those of cases reported in the literature, and said they needed more information from their healthcare providers, especially pediatricians and primary care physicians. Most of the audiologists felt confident in their knowledge of and/or skills in aiding in the diagnosis and/or treatment of LVAS, except for issues surrounding cochlear implants. Audiologists were interested in obtaining continuing education about LVAS from multiple sources. CONCLUSIONS: Parents of children having LVAS need greater support from their healthcare providers, who in turn need additional information on the topic and should collaborate for supportive and appropriate interprofessional care.

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were investigated as a platform for tunable nanoparticle composition and enhanced opacity in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement. Halloysite has been widely used to increase the mechanical properties of various polymer matrices, in stark contrast to other fillers such as barium sulfate that provide opacity but also decrease mechanical strength. The present work describes a dry deposition method for successively fabricating barium sulfate nanoparticles onto the exterior surface of HNTs. A sintering process was used to coat the HNTs in barium sulfate. Barium sulfate-coated HNTs were then added to PMMA bone cement and the samples were tested for mechanical strength and tailored opacity correlated with the fabrication ratio and the amount of barium sulfate-coated HNTs added. The potential cytotoxic effect of barium-coated HNTs in PMMA cement was also tested on osteosarcoma cells. Barium-coated HNTs were found to be completely cytocompatible, and cell proliferation was not inhibited after exposure to the barium-coated HNTs embedded in PMMA cement. We demonstrate a simple method for the creation of barium-coated nanoparticles that imparted improved contrast and material properties to native PMMA. An easy and efficient method for coating clay nanotubes offers the potential for enhanced imaging by radiologists or orthopedic surgeons.
