RESUMO

The authors present the first experience in the treatment of fresh ruptures of the Achilles tendon by their own surgical technique--suture end to end with augmentation using plantaris tendon graft. The results were evaluated on a small group of 9 patients (average age 45 years) operated on in the period of 1999-2000. The most important criterion was the subjective evaluation of the patient and the post-operative limitation in sport, job and ordinary activity. We did not record any preoperative or post-operative complication and the limitation of the range of motion was negligible with regard to the needs of the patient. The authors are aware of the fact that post-operative follow-up of the patients is relatively short-term. The surgical technique is described in detail.

RESUMO

Uniformly sized macroporous polymer beads, which can be used as chiral stationary phase (CSP), have been prepared by the staged templated suspension polymerization process using chiral monomer as one of the copolymerization components. This approach enables the preparation of CSPs for which properties such as pore size, pore volume, surface area, chemistry, and chiral ligands can be tuned over a broad range. Several types of well-defined chiral monomers were prepared and allowed to assess synergistic effect of multiple selectors attached to a branched linker as well as the effect of the length and chemistry of the linker. Microscale batch screening was used for simple and rapid evaluation of selectivity. The most promising candidate CSPs were prepared on a larger scale and packed into HPLC columns. Their performance was demonstrated on the separation of racemic N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-alpha-amino acid alkylamides. The highest separation factors alpha of up to 27 were observed for CSPs prepared from monomers containing the branched spacer. These highly selective CSPs also enabled the separation of larger amounts of the target racemates upon column overload conditions.

RESUMO

Liquid chromatography at the critical adsorption point (LC CAP) with on-line NMR detection (on-line LC CAP NMR) was utilized for analysis of tacticity distribution of stereo-regular poly(ethyl methacrylate)s (PEMAs). The separation of a model PEMA sample composed of four constituents with similar molar masses (Mw = (14-16) x 10(3) g mol-1) differing in their tacticity (rr triad content = 0, 33, 68, and 89%) was achieved by LC CAP with a mixed eluent composed of acetone, acetone-d6, and cyclohexane. The tacticity composition within each peak eluted from the LC CAP column was directly determined by a 750-MHz 1H NMR spectrometer that was used as a real-time detector in the continuous-flow mode. Tacticity distribution in a particular PEMA sample with mm/mr/rr = 2/45/53 and narrow molar mass distribution of Mw/Mn = 1.05 has been revealed by the LC CAP NMR technique.
