RESUMO

Akkermansia muciniphila (Am) shows a beneficial role as a probiotic in the treatment of metabolic syndrome. However, the mechanism remains to be elucidated. We tested the hypothesis that Am extracellular vesicles (AmEVs) have a protective effect against hypertension. Extracellular vesicles purified from anaerobically cultured Am were characterized by nanoparticle tracking analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and silver stain after sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). AmEVs (1.0 × 1010 log particles/L) or vehicles were added into organ baths to induce vasorelaxation. In addition, AmEVs (1.0 × 108 or 1.0 × 109 particles/kg) or vehicles were injected into the tail veins of Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKYs) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) weekly for 4 weeks. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and splenocytes isolated from both rat strains were analyzed by flow cytometry, RT-qPCR, and western blot. AmEVs affected neither vascular contraction nor endothelial relaxation in thoracic aortas. Moreover, AmEVs protected against the development of hypertension in SHRs without a serious adverse reaction. Additionally, AmEVs increased the population of T regulatory (Treg) cells and tended to reduce proinflammatory cytokines. These results indicate that AmEVs have a protective effect against hypertension without a serious adverse reaction. Therefore, it is foreseen that AmEVs may be utilized as a novel therapeutic for the treatment of hypertension.

Rationale: While the immune system plays a crucial role in the development of hypertension, the specific contributions of distinct immune cell populations remain incompletely understood. The emergence of single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology enables us to analyze the transcriptomes of individual immune cells and to assess the significance of each immune cell type in hypertension development. Objective: We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that B cells play a crucial role in the development of fructose-induced hypertension. Methods and Results: Eight-week-old Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) male rats were divided into two groups and given either tap water (TW) or a 20% fructose solution (HFS) for 4 weeks. Systolic blood pressure was measured using the tail-cuff method. ScRNA-seq analysis was performed on lamina propria cells (LPs) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from SS rats subjected to either TW or HFS. The HFS treatment induced hypertension in the SS rats. The analysis revealed 27 clusters in LPs and 28 clusters in PBMCs, allowing for the identification and characterization of various immune cell types within each cluster. Specifically, B cells and follicular helper T (Tfh) cells were prominent in LPs, while B cells and M1 macrophages dominated PBMCs in the HFS group. Moreover, the HFS treatment triggered an increase in the number of B cells in both LPs and PBMCs, accompanied by activation of the interferon pathway. Conclusions: The significant involvement of B cells in intestinal and PBMC responses indicates their pivotal contribution to the development of hypertension. This finding suggests that targeting B cells could be a potential strategy to mitigate high blood pressure in fructose-induced hypertension. Moreover, the simultaneous increase in follicular B cells and Tfh cells in LPs, along with the upregulation of interferon pathway genes in B cells, underscores a potential autoimmune factor contributing to the pathogenesis of fructose-induced hypertension in the intestine.

This study aimed to delineate the effect of sodium chloride on the induction of inflammatory responses and the development of hypertension in Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) and salt-resistant (SR) rats. Splenocytes were isolated from the spleens of SS and SR rats, and cultured on anti-CD3-coated plates for 5 days. The cultured splenic T-cells were challenged with a hypertonic salt solution (0, 20, or 40 mM) in the absence or presence of IL-6 (0, 20, or 60 ng/mL), TGF-ß (0, 5, or 15 ng/mL), or IL-23 (0, 10, or 30 ng/mL), and analyzed via ELISA, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence. The hypertonic salt solution potentiated IL-17A production, as well as the differentiation of Th17 cells via IL-6/TGF-ß/IL-23, exclusively in SS rats. However, it did not affect IL-10 production or the differentiation of Treg cells in any of the groups. Furthermore, it potentiated the signal of RORγt in IL-6-treated splenic T-cells from SS rats. To summarize, cultured splenic T-cells exhibited enhanced inflammatory responses on exposure to a hypertonic salt solution in SS rats only, which indicated that sodium chloride and inflammatory cytokines synergistically drove the induction of pathogenic Th17 cells and the development of hypertension in this group only.

High-salt intake is known to induce pathogenic T helper (Th) 17 cells and hypertension, but contrary to what is known, causes hypertension only in salt-sensitive (SS) individuals. Thus, we hypothesized that Th cell polarity determines salt sensitivity and hypertension development. Cultured splenic T cells from Dahl SS and salt-resistant (SR) rats subjected to hypertonic salt solutions were evaluated via ELISA, flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry and RT-qPCR. Seven-week-old SS and SR rats were fed a chow (CD) or high-salt diet (HSD) for 4 weeks, with weekly measurements of systolic blood pressure. The relaxation response of the aorta rings to the cumulative addition of acetylcholine was measured ex vivo. In these experimental animals, the Th cell polarity (Th17 and T regulatory [Treg]), the expression of Th17- or Treg-related genes, and the enrichment of the transcription factors RORγt and FOXP3 on the target gene promoter regions were determined via flow cytometry, RT-qPCR, and chromatin immunoprecipitation. Hypertonic salt solution induced Th17 and Treg cell differentiation in cultured splenic T cells isolated from SS and SR rats, respectively. HSD induced hypertension, endothelial dysfunction and proinflammatory Th17 cell differentiation only in SS rats. The enrichment of RORγt on the promoter regions of Il17a and Il23r increased their expression only in SS rats. Regardless of HSD, SR rats remained normotensive with Treg polarity, causing high Treg-related gene expressions (Il10, Cd25 and Foxp3). This study demonstrated that Th cell polarity determines salt sensitivity and drives hypertension development. SR rats were protected from HSD-associated hypertension via anti-inflammatory Treg polarity.

A high-fat diet (HFD) frequently causes obesity-induced hypertension. Because Dahl salt-resistant rats are protected against hypertension after high-salt or high-fructose intake, it is of interest whether this model also protects against hypertension after diet-induced obesity. We tested the hypothesis that Dahl salt-resistant rat protects against hypertension during diet-induced obesity. Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) and Dahl salt-resistant (SR) rats were fed a HFD (60% fat) or a chow diet (CD; 8% fat) for 12 weeks. We measured blood pressure using the tail-cuff method. The paraffin sections of thoracic perivascular adipose tissue (tPVAT) were stained with hematoxylin/eosin and trichrome. The expression of genes in the tPVAT and kidneys were measured by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The HFD induced hypertension in SS (p < 0.01) but not SR rats, although it increased body weight gain (p < 0.05) and tPVAT weight (p < 0.01) in both rats. The HFD did not affect the expression of genes related to any of the adipocyte markers in both rats, although SR rats had reduced beige adipocyte marker Tmem26 levels (p < 0.01) and increased anti-inflammatory cytokine adiponectin (p < 0.05) as compared with SS rat. The HFD did not affect the mRNA expression of contractile factors in the tPVAT of SS and SR rats. SR rats are protected against hypertension during diet-induced obesity. This result implies that the genetic trait determining salt sensitivity may also determine fructose and fat sensitivity and that it is associated with the prevention of hypertension.

We investigated the structural findings on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) related to the presence of right-angled vessels (RAV) in patients with macular telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2 with severity 3 in Korea. A retrospective multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in six tertiary hospitals in Korea; the study included 116 MacTel type 2 eyes with severity 3. The SD-OCT findings were compared between eyes with RAV on fundus photography or fluorescein angiography and those without RAV. Logistic regression was performed to determine factors associated with the presence of RAV. Fifty eyes presented with RAV and 61 eyes without RAV. More eyes presented with only inner retinal (IR) cavities on SD-OCT among eyes without RAV than among those with RAV (P < 0.001). However, eyes with RAV presented with IR disorganization, outer retinal (OR) cavity, and ellipsoid zone (EZ) disruption more frequently than eyes without RAV did (all P < 0.001). These SD-OCT findings were significantly associated with the presence of RAV. The presence of RAV was closely related to IR disorganization, OR cavities, and EZ disruption on SD-OCT. These findings suggest an advanced phase of MacTel type 2.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Eaton's skate Bathyraja eatonii was studied using the long-read technology, PacBio Sequel System. The complete mitochondrial genome form of B. eatonii was 16,698 bp and it's comprised of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA and 2 rRNA. The base composition of B. eatonii is analyzed 31.94% for A, 33.94% for T, 13.49% for G, 20.64% for C, the result of GC content was 33.94%. Phylogenetic analysis showed that B. eatonii was closely related to Bathyraja meridionalis in Arhynchobatidae family, and this first mitochondrial genome of Antarctic skate would provide fundamental information to the evolutional relationship of Antarctic fishes.

Purpose: To investigate the demographic and multimodal imaging features of macular telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2 in Korea and their relationship with visual acuity and the clinical stage.Methods: A retrospective multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted in six tertiary hospitals in Korea and the study included 84 patients. Demographic data and imaging data of fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), confocal blue-light reflectance (CBR), fluorescein angiography (FAG), and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were collected.Results: The Korean patients with MacTel type 2 were predominantly female (75%), and the mean logMAR visual acuity was 0.282 ± 0.280 at initial presentation. Most commonly presented signs were the loss of retinal transparency in fundus photographs (68.3%); increased autofluorescence in FAF (83.6%); increased blue reflectance involving the centre in CBR (68.0%); telangiectatic vessels in FAG (88.2%); and hyporeflective cavities in OCT (77.7%). The eyes diagnosed in the first half of the study period (2009-2014) showed a tendency to be diagnosed at more advanced severe stages than those diagnosed in the second half of the study period (2015-2019), using new severity scales based on FAG, FAF and OCT findings.Conclusion: The clinical features of MacTel type 2 in Korean patients assessed by newer imaging modalities suggest that Korean patients and the Caucasian-dominant population show similar presentations. This study showed that MacTel type 2 can be diagnosed in the earlier phase of the disease by using new imaging modalities and through better understanding of the disease.

PURPOSE: We sought to investigate the ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness in eyes with nonexudative age-related macular degeneration. METHODS: We classified eyes into four categories-pachydrusen, soft drusen, subretinal drusenoid deposit (SDD), and soft drusen with SDD-and compared the baseline mean macular GCIPL thickness according to the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study grid and its change between groups. RESULTS: We classified 53, 29, 36, and 34 eyes into the four categories, respectively. The mean GCIPL thickness values in the 3-mm area were 82.61 ± 9.54 µm for the pachydrusen group, 79.11 ± 10.26 µm for the soft drusen group, 77.72 ± 6.04 µm for the SDD group, and 71.63 ± 8.69 µm for the soft drusen with SDD group (P < 0.001). The soft drusen with the SDD group showed a greater change in GCIPL thickness (-2.50 ± 0.29 µm/year) in the 3-mm area as compared with the pachydrusen group (-0.18 ± 0.35 µm/year), soft drusen group (-0.55 ± 0.36 µm/year), and SDD group (-0.55 ± 0.37) (all P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The GCIPL thickness varied according to the type of nonexudative age-related macular degeneration. The thinner baseline GCIPL and its greater change in eyes with soft drusen with SDD may suggest that these eyes are experiencing more prominent neuroretinal degeneration in the central 3-mm area than those in the other groups.

We analysed the imaging findings of macular telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2 in Korea using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and investigated their relationship with visual acuity and clinical stages. A retrospective multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted in six tertiary hospitals in Korea and included 129 patients. We analysed all the SD-OCT images encompassing the macular area. Hyporeflective cavities (77.7%) were the most frequently detected abnormalities in SD-OCT. Disruption of the external limiting membrane, ellipsoid zone, and interdigitation zone were found in 67 (40.4%), 87 (52.4%), and 94 eyes (56.6%), respectively. Four eyes (2.4%) had lamellar macular hole, and five eyes (3.0%) full-thickness macular hole. Neovascularisation, either subretinal or intraretinal, was found in 14 eyes (8.4%). Eyes with outer retinal hyperreflective band disruption had lower visual acuity than those without them. The presented characteristic clinical features of OCT in MacTel type 2 can not only aid in differentiating this disease from others but are also helpful for better judgement of the disease stage in daily clinical practice. Inner retinal hyporeflective cavities without outer retinal abnormalities on SD-OCT, although classified as severity scale 3, could be considered a relatively early stage in the disease process in terms of vision.

BACKGROUND: Spingobium sp. PAMC 28499 is isolated from the glaciers of Uganda. Uganda is a unique region where hot areas and glaciers coexist, with a variety of living creatures surviving, but the survey on them is very poor. The genetic character and complete genome information of Sphingobium strains help with environmental studies and the development of better to enzyme industry. OBJECTIVE: In this study, complete genome sequence of Spingobium sp. PAMC 28499 and comparative analysis of Spingobium species strains isolated from variety of the region. METHODS: Genome sequencing was performed using PacBio sequel single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing technology. The predicted gene sequences were functionally annotated and gene prediction was carried out using the program NCBI non-redundant database. And using dbCAN2 and KEGG data base were degradation pathway predicted and protein prediction about carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZymes). RESULTS: The genome sequence has 64.5% GC content, 4432 coding protein coding genes, 61 tRNAs, and 12 rRNA operons. Its genome encodes a simple set of metabolic pathways relevant to pectin and its predicted degradation protein an unusual distribution of CAZymes with extracellular esterases and pectate lyases. CAZyme annotation analyses revealed 165 genes related to carbohydrate active, and especially we have found GH1, GH2, GH3, GH38, GH35, GH51, GH51, GH53, GH106, GH146, CE12, PL1 and PL11 such as known pectin degradation genes from Sphingobium yanoikuiae. These results confirmed that this Sphingobium sp. strain PAMC 28499 have similar patterns to RG I pectin-degrading pathway. CONCLUSION: In this study, isolated and sequenced the complete genome of Spingobium sp. PAMC 28499. Also, this strain has comparative genome analysis. Through the complete genome we can predict how this strain can store and produce energy in extreme environment. It can also provide bioengineered data by finding new genes that degradation the pectin.

BACKGROUND: We applied bibliometric tools to original articles published in the official journal of the Korean Knee Society between 1999 and 2018 to identify their characteristics related to knee surgery and to examine the changes in research trends in the last 20 years. METHODS: Over a 20-year period, 579 original articles were published in the journal Knee Surgery and Related Research (KSRR). We analyzed the title, keywords, and abstract of the article to analyze the research topics and assigned original articles to seven surgical categories as follows: total knee arthroplasty (TKA), unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), high tibial osteotomy (HTO), arthroscopy, surgery for cruciate ligament, revision surgery, and other surgery. To analyze the trends in research, we divided the study period into two equal parts of 10 years each, examined the percentage of articles in each decade, and analyzed topic trends using the growth rate. RESULTS: Among the original articles, 86 on the topic of non-surgery were excluded, and 493 original articles related surgical research were included. Articles related to surgery accounted for 85.2% of the total original articles published annually. By period, this was 85.6% in the first half and 84.8% in the late half (p = 0.76). A total of 493 original articles related to surgery, with the largest number of TKA-related research at 52.1%. In the study period, the largest increase in the percentage of articles was on the topic of HTO surgery, by 149%. The topics of UKA and revision surgery increased by 95.3% and 33.9%. The topic of TKA increased by 5.9% and the topic of surgery for cruciate ligament decreased by 18.7%. The topic of arthroscopy showed the largest decrease, by 47.6%. CONCLUSIONS: The bibliometric findings of this study suggest that the majority of surgery-related original articles published in KSRR during the last 20 years involved research about TKA surgery, and the greatest relative increase over the study period involved research about HTO surgery. The authors expect that the analysis of characteristics and research trends of original articles published in KSRR will provide useful information about KSRR for future researchers.

PURPOSE: We investigated macular and peripapillary choroidal thickness (CT) and flow voids in the choriocapillaris in eyes with nonexudative age-related macular degeneration. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with nonexudative age-related macular degeneration and classified their eyes into three categories: pachydrusen, drusen, and subretinal drusenoid deposit. Mean macular and peripapillary CT and choriocapillaris flow void area were compared among the three groups. RESULTS: The three groups included 29, 33, and 33 patients, respectively. The mean macular and peripapillary CT findings were 260.64 ± 75.85 µm and 134.47 ± 46.28 µm for the pachydrusen group; 163.63 ± 64.08 µm and 93.47 ± 39.07 µm for the drusen group; and 95.33 ± 28.87 µm and 56.06 ± 11.64 µm for the subretinal drusenoid deposit group (all, P < 0.001). Mean macular and peripapillary flow void area varied among the subretinal drusenoid deposit group (57.07 ± 6.16% and 55.38 ± 6.65%), drusen group (58.30 ± 6.98% and 49.11 ± 9.11%) and pachydrusen group (50.09 ± 5.77% and 45.47 ± 8.06%) (all P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The peripapillary CT and flow voids in the choriocapillaris varied according to the features of drusen in nonexudative age-related macular degeneration eyes. Greater flow voids and thinner CT in eyes with subretinal drusenoid deposits may suggest that these eyes have diffuse choroidal abnormalities both in and outside the macula.

PURPOSE: To investigate the features of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) on optical coherence tomography in eyes with early age-related macular degeneration with subretinal drusenoid deposit. METHODS: We classified the eyes into three types: nonundulating RPE, undulating RPE, and wedge-shaped RPE. We compared the retinal vessel densities, retinal thickness, and choroidal thickness of a 3-mm-diameter zone. RESULTS: We classified 33, 27, and 20 as nonundulating RPE, undulating RPE, and wedge-shaped RPE eyes, respectively. The vascular densities of the superficial and deep capillary plexus showed differences; nonundulating RPE group (23.93 ± 2.26% and 23.54 ± 1.78%), undulating RPE group (22.29 ± 2.80% and 21.94 ± 2.42%), and wedge-shaped RPE group (21.93 ± 2.70% and 20.63 ± 2.42%, P = 0.010 and P < 0.001). The mean retinal thickness and choroidal thickness were also different, nonundulating RPE group (298.26 ± 13.81 µm and 180.08 ± 55.49 µm), undulating RPE group (285.29 ± 21.88 µm and 148.45 ± 55.08 µm), and wedge-shaped RPE group (274.86 ± 20.62 µm and 135.75 ± 39.77 µm) (P = 0.001 and P = 0.007). CONCLUSION: Altered features of the RPE on optical coherence tomography may indicate advancement in disease and be part of an overall degeneration process in these eyes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the extent of adhesion and changes in the Y configuration after the Y-split procedure, compared with the posterior fixation suture. METHODS: Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were included in the study. The 10-mm Y-split procedure was performed in the superior rectus muscle (SR) of one eye, and the 10-mm posterior fixation suture was made in the SR of the other eye. Six weeks after surgery, the Y arm lengths and lengths of adherence to the sclera were measured. If the adhesion involved the whole Y arm, the distance between the original SR insertion and most proximal part of the adhered SR was measured. In the eyes with posterior fixation suture, the distance between the SR insertion and most proximal part of the adhered SR was evaluated. RESULTS: The average nasal and temporal Y arm lengths were 6.37 ± 0.65 and 6.54 ± 0.63 mm, respectively, a significant decrease from those measured immediately after surgery (P = 0.002 and 0.002, respectively). Adhesions involved the entire Y arms in 11 of 12 SRs (91.7%), with an average adhesion length of 7.01 ± 1.04 mm. In SRs with posterior fixation sutures, the average adhesion was 9.18 ± 0.62 mm from the insertion, which was only 2.17 mm posterior to proximal portion of adhesion in Y-split SR (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Healing process reduces the Y arm length. Adhesion may involve the entire Y arm and could weaken or alter the therapeutic mechanism after the Y-split procedure.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of applying sodium hyaluronate solution (Protad) intraoperatively during endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy. METHODS: A retrospective medical record review of all 254 patients (254 eyes) who underwent endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy for nasolacrimal duct obstruction was performed. The success rates and postoperative complications of the Protad application group (105 eyes) and the control group (149 eyes) were compared. RESULTS: The Protad group had better anatomical (96.2% vs 86.6%, p = 0.010) and functional (93.3% vs 85.2%, p = 0.046) surgical success rates. Granuloma developed less frequently in the Protad group (11.4% vs 32.9%, p < 0.001). Regarding secondary outcomes, synechia was less frequent in the Protad group, but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.283). Crust and infection rates were also lower in the Protad group (6.7% vs 11.4% for crust, 7.6% vs 8.1% for infection), but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.203 and p = 0.899, respectively). The rate of revision surgery was significantly lower in the Protad group compared to the control group (1.9% vs 14.1%, p < 0.001). Granuloma had the largest effects on anatomical and functional surgical success (odds ratio, 72.221 for anatomical and 19.915 for functional). CONCLUSIONS: The application of Protad effectively reduced postoperative granulation and enhanced surgical success rate after endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy. We suggest that Protad is a good nasal dressing material, especially for beginners in endoscopic surgery who work on Asian patients with narrow nasal cavities.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the accommodative loads change needed to maintain binocular fusion in patients with intermittent exotropia (IXT). METHODS: Seventeen consecutive patients with basic IXT and 15 normal controls were recruited. The WAM-5500 autorefractor (GrandSeiko, Fukuyama, Japan) was used to measure refractive error (D) under binocular and monocular viewing conditions at 6 m, 50 cm, 33 cm and 20 cm. The difference between binocular and monocular refractive error (D) at each distance defined the change in the accommodative load. The changes in accommodative load were compared between IXT patients and normal controls. We also investigated the change in accommodative loads according to the fixing preference in patients with IXT. RESULTS: In IXT patients, the mean angles of deviation were 20.2 ± 7.19 and 21.0 ± 8.02 prism diopters at 6 m and 33 cm, respectively. Under binocular viewing, the changes in accommodative loads of each eye in IXT patients were significantly higher at 50, 33 and 20 cm than those of normal controls (p < 0.05, all). The changes in accommodative loads of fixating and deviating eyes at 6 m were not significantly different between IXT patients and normal controls (p = 0.193, 0.155, respectively). The changes in accommodative loads of the fixating eye at each distance were not significantly different from those of the deviating eye in IXT patients (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The changes of accommodative loads at near fixation increased more in IXT patients than they did in normal controls while maintaining binocular fusion.

PURPOSE: To quantify and compare higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in children after epiblepharon surgery. METHODS: The medical records of children (mean age, 7.3 years [range, 2-13 years]) who underwent surgery for epiblepharon were reviewed retrospectively. Aberrometry was conducted before surgery and at 1 month's and 3 months' follow-up using the Wavefront Analyzer KR-1W. Corneal HOAs in the 4 mm and 6 mm optical zones were compared. Classification of the severity of epiblepharon was based on the degree of cilia touching the cornea and corneal erosion. RESULTS: A total of 120 eyes of 60 patients were included. Corneal total HOAs in the 4 mm and 6 mm optical zone decreased significantly at 1 and 3 months after surgery (P = 0.001 and 0.000, resp.. in the 4 mm zone; P = 0.006 and 0.006 in the 6 mm zone). Surgery induced a significant reduction of fourth-order aberrations, with decrease of tetrafoil in the 4 mm zone and coma, tetrafoil, and secondary astigmatism in the 6 mm zone 3 months after surgery; the differences were statistically significant (P = 0.038 and 0.006 in the 4 mm zone; P = 0.018 and 0.000 in the 6 mm zone). Although there was no significant association between epiblepharon severity and total HOAs, reduction of corneal staining grade and decrease of total HOAs at 3 months were significantly correlated (P = 0.03 in the 6 mm zone). CONCLUSIONS: In this patient cohort, total HOAs decreased significantly after epiblepharon surgery. The correlation of reduction of corneal staining grade and decrease of total HOAs may be helpful in deciding the timing of surgery in children who have no specific visual symptoms.

RESUMO

The diagnosis of Kimura disease should be strongly considered in any patient of Asian descent who presents with painless subcutaneous nodules predominantly involving the head and neck region in association with marked eosinophilia and elevated immunoglobulin E. Surgical resection of the lesions can be performed to prevent relapse. Here, the authors report a case of Kimura disease presenting as an eyelid mass in a 13-year-old Asian boy with pronounced eosinophilia and elevated immunoglobulin E levels.
