RESUMO

Ultrafast time-resolved x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) experiment was performed on a magnetite (Fe3O4) film using a femtosecond laser plasma x-ray source delivering Bremsstrahlung radiation. Ultrafast temporal evolution of the XANES of Fe3O4 following an excitation by an infra-red (IR) laser pulse was observed in a pump-probe scheme. The Fe K x-ray absorption edge shifts towards low energy upon IR excitation as much as 12 eV, which is mainly attributed to the charge transfer between the Fe ions. The shift in the absorption edge occurred within about 150 fs, typical time of non-thermal electronic redistribution. The charge transfer also causes an ultrafast increase in the IR transmission in the similar time scale.

RESUMO

Dynamics of laser-induced optical breakdown in the bulk of fused-silica glass irradiated by a sub-nanosecond laser pulse at a wavelength of 790 nm with a fluence of 522 J/cm2 was studied by the femtosecond time-resolved complex interferometry in Nomarski arrangement utilising a Fresnel bi-prism. Evolution of the plasma channel and the development of the free electron density were in focus of the investigation. The measured ultimate length of the plasma channel was equal to 30 µm and almost doubled the length estimated within the moving breakdown model. The history of the transient electron density distribution in the plasma was reconstructed from the phase shift maps using the inverse Abel transform and it revealed further deviation from this model. The core of the plasma channel exhibited at the last stages of the development a considerable level of the electron density up to 2.4×1020 cm-3. The signature of the pre-breakdown phase has been identified as radiation caused by ionization-released electrons interacting with ions and has been demonstrated in solids for the first time in this way. Origin of the discrepancy between the theoretical prediction of the moving breakdown model and the measured values of the channel length is discussed as well.

RESUMO

It is shown that the statistics of the intensity distribution in the output beam of a collisional X-ray laser, analysed in terms of the degree of freedom or equivalently the number of the coherence modes in the beam cross-section, has non-Gaussian character. The non-Gaussian character seems to be caused by the small-scale plasma/medium fluctuations. It was assumed that these overlap the modal structure imposed by the geometry of the medium and considered as equivalent to a large-scale inhomogeneity. Thus, the fluctuations decide about the character of the output beam transverse coherence. It is also shown that the relevant to this model compound statistics of the intensity fluctuations in the output beam is well described by the m-m-distribution, a specific form of the K-distribution. The deviation from the Gaussian statistics was confirmed by the field correlation function at the laser exit plane, retrieved from the experimental data.

RESUMO

Soft x-ray lasers pumped in the grazing incidence geometry show strongly reduced energetic needs but hardly changed conversion efficiency between the pump energy and the output short-wavelength radiation. Numerical analysis presented in the paper concerns with performance of a Ni-like Ag soft-x-ray laser pumped by a triple-pulse structure in the grazing incidence geometry as a function of the puming conditions. It was found that a weak precursor preceding the main preforming and heating pulses by a few nanoseconds is crucial for the energy deposition. Its presence enables in different arrangements a reasonable reduction in the pump energy and relaxation of the steep density gradients as well as a control over partition of the deposited energy. As a consequence, it was concluded that a well energetically balanced three- or multipulse composition seems to be a reasonable way to achieve performance improvement.

RESUMO

The operation of a Ni-like Mo x-ray laser at 18.9 nm with a repetition rate of 10 Hz has been demonstrated. The laser has been pumped applying the grazing incidence pump arrangement, where a short (picoseconds) pulse irradiates a Mo plasma column generated by a long (a few hundred picoseconds) pulse. The delayed short pulse is incident at a grazing angle on the plasma to heat it efficiently. We used a total energy of less than 450 mJ ( 150 mJ in the long and 250-300 mJ in the short pulse) in a line focus of 7 mm by 50 microm .

RESUMO

The degree of spatial coherence in the direction perpendicular to the target surface is reported for a transient nickellike silver x-ray laser at 13.9 nm. An x-ray laser plasma column was produced by irradiating a slab silver target with a single shaped picosecond laser pulse with energy less than 3 J. Young's double-slit method was applied to measure the fringe visibility as a function of the slit separation for different target lengths. The diameter of the equivalent incoherent source and the coherence radius of the output radiation were determined as well.
