RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Wrinkles commonly manifest in various areas of the face as individuals age. This study aimed to assess the association between facial wrinkles and different facial forms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, prospective study was conducted on the facial photographs of 400 subjects aged 40-60 years, which were divided into four groups of 100 subjects each: Group 1, square facial form; Group 2, ovoid facial form; Group 3, square tapered facial form; and Group 4, tapered facial form. All groups had almost equal distributions of males and females. Six types of facial wrinkles were studied, namely, forehead, glabellar, canthal, nasolabial, wrinkles at the corner of the mouth, and perioral wrinkles. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for intergroup comparison, and an independent Student's t-test was used to assess gender differences in facial wrinkles. RESULTS: Significant gender differences were observed for forehead wrinkles in Groups 1 and 3, canthal wrinkles in Groups 1 and 2, and right perioral wrinkles in Group 1 (p<0.05). There were non-significant gender differences between right and left-side facial wrinkles (p>0.05). Significant differences between the groups were observed for all facial wrinkles between the right and left sides of the face (p<0.05). There was a significant difference between the groups for the presence of glabellar, corner of the mouth, and perioral wrinkles, with the presence of higher wrinkles in ovoid and tapered facial forms compared to square and square tapered facial forms (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Females had more facial wrinkles than males, predominantly in the forehead region. The least prominent wrinkles were observed in the perioral region of the face. Glabellar, corner of the mouth, and perioral wrinkles were predominantly observed in ovoid and tapered facial forms.

RESUMO

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis, also called idiopathic gingival overgrowth (IGO), is a rare benign condition that occurs either in isolation or as a part of a syndrome. The overgrowth, if excess, impedes oral functions such as mastication and speech and causes cosmetic disfigurement. Diagnosis and treatment becomes challenging if the overgrowth is massive and accompanies other associated pathologies. This case reports concurrent occurrence of three pathologies, i.e., IGO, aggressive periodontitis, and candidal infection in a 20-year-old healthy male patient. The surgical procedure performed involved internal bevel gingivectomy combined with open-flap surgery. Seven-year follow-up revealed no recurrence of overgrowth and stable periodontal condition.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The chin is a reflection of the entire face and, along with the nose, is one of the major determinants of facial profile balance. When it is appropriate in size, shape and position, the chin can enhance the normal harmony and symmetry of the face, even camouflaging less than ideal jaw relationships. Failure to perform a needed genioplasty can jeopardise the end product of many hours of otherwise successful major orthognathic or cosmetic surgery. Genioplasty procedure has been used for many years and has been modified in various ways, despite its original description by Trauner and Obwegeser. AIM: To overcome the disadvantages of older techniques such as step deformity, less bone contact and more chances of relapse. METHOD: Type 1-Esthetic genioplasty: A curvilinear horizontal osteotomy can be performed at lower border as posteriorly as possible. After the osteotomy, the detached segment can be moved as per the requirement. Type 2-Functional genioplasty: A horizontal subapical cut was made through full thickness of the mandible involving the labial and lingual cortex, then vertical cuts were made bicortically and two oblique cuts were made at the end of vertical cuts monocortically. CONCLUSION: This modification has various advantages such as more bone contact, no step deformity, less chance of relapse and also most effective treatment for sleep apnoea patients.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and complications of microneedling (dermaroller) therapy as a treatment modality in the treatment of facial scars resulting from acne, trauma and surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty patients with facial acne scar, traumatic scar, hypertrophic scars and scars with skin discoloration reporting to our institute were included in the study. Microneedling procedure was performed with the help of dermaroller. Postoperative wound was evaluated by three evaluators by comparing preoperative and postoperative clinical photographs. RESULTS: Seven out of the total 50 patients (14%) showed an excellent response to dermaroller treatment, while 26 patients (52%) had a good response. Fourteen patients (28%) had fair response, and 3 patients (6%) had poor response. CONCLUSION: Microneedling therapy with dermaroller is one of the simplest, yet most effective skin treatments for scars, stretch marks, deep wrinkles, etc. The dermaroller is a definitive credit crunch skin rescue option. It is simple yet effective and suitable for all skin types and skin tones.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Knowledge of anthropometric measurements of the external ear is important as variations exist based on gender, age and ethnicity. This study has derived anthropometric data pertaining to the external ear in the Maharashtrian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine variables of the external ear were measured in 505 Maharashtrian adults (aged 18-64 years) using photoanthropometric methods. RESULTS: Descriptive data and the left-right symmetry for the study population were obtained. CONCLUSION: These data have applications in screening for or monitoring diseases, otoplastic surgery, forensics, industrial design, apparel design and ergonomics.
