Selected problems of medical qualification for physical fitness in postmenopausal women.

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between sex hormones in blood and the occurrence of chest pain and degree of exercise capacity in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Fifty-two postmenopausal women with chest pain in retrosternal area in history (group A) and 52 asymptomatic (group B) were examined. Estradiol (E2), total testosterone (T), dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations in blood were measured. The free testosterone (FT), bioavailable testosterone (BT), index of free testosterone (FTI) and the index of free estradiol (FE2I) were calculated. ECG exercise stress tests were performed by the treadmill stress test track. RESULTS: In group A compared with B there were higher: systolic blood pressure (SBP), (129.3±13.5 vs. 121.8±17.1 mmHg, P=0.04), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (80.8±11.8 vs. 78.6±12.1, P=0.04) at rest, maximum SBP post exercise (172.2±15.9 vs. 157.8±14.2 mmHg, P=0.0003) and lower DHEA-S (122.7±62.8 vs. 150.8±72.9 µg/100 mL, P=0.05) and T (1.5±0.6 vs. 1.7±0.6 nmol/l, P=0.04). T correlated with exercise duration (ED) (R=-0.251, P<0.05), FT with SBP increase during exercise (R=0.286, P<0.05) and ED (R=0.280, P<0.05), BT positively correlated with heart rate (HR) increase during exercise (R=0.285, P<0.05) and with ED (R=0.297, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: In postmenopausal women chest pain in history occurs regardless of exercise capacity and may be connected with arterial hypertension, deficiency of DHEA-S and androgenicity. Exercise capacity of postmenopausal women may be influenced by sex hormones, which levels in blood could be useful in the qualification for physical recreation plan.

[Use of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale in psychosomatic disorders]. / Zastosowanie Skali Leku i Depresji-HADS w chorobach psychosomatycznych.

Sixty-three psychosomatic patients were examined using three self-evaluation scales: Beck Depression Inventory-BDI, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-STAI and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-HADS in order to attain a description of the level of anxiety and depression in the group as well as to make an opinion on the reliability of HADS and to make a comparison from the results of the two scales: STAI and BDI. The final results indicated that HADS could perhaps stand-up to be a useful instrument for medical patients for screening and examining the disturbed emotion in groups of psychosomatic patients.

[Correlation between peak expiratory flow and selected indices of bronchial potency in children between 4 and 18 years of age]. / Korelacja miedzy szczytowym przeplywem wydechowym a wybranymi wskaznikami droznosci oskrzeli u dzieci w wieku od 4 do 18 roku zycia.

The study was conducted on 474 children diagnosed at the Lung Function Laboratory of the Children' Hospital in Lublin in the year 1992. 55% of the analyzed children were males. The children's initial diagnosis were: bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, chronic respiratory disorders, diabetes mellitus, abnormalities of the thorax. In 28 children no abnormalities were detected. PEF was measured with a Peak Flow Meter produced by Vitalograph. Children in the age group 4-6 years had PEF measured with a mini meter, reading values between 0 to 300 L/min. A standard meter was used for older children detecting values between 0 to 700 L/min. Spirometry, MEFV curves, resistance were analyzed with the abcPNEUMO 2000 spirometer (abcMED). Correlation was calculated between PEF and FEV1, MEF25, MEF50, MEF75, PEF, PIF, FEV1%FVC, Raw. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the best subpopulation of independent variants. In all children a correlation was found between PEF and the major parameters of airways potency. The weakest correlation was found in children younger than 6 years. PEF correlated best with FEV1 and MEF75.
