RESUMO

Data in the literature concerning thyroid disease in women after treatment of breast cancer differ. The authors examined therefore the thyroid function (thyroid stimulating hormone, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, antibodies against thyroid peroxidase and against thyroglobulin) in a random sample of 76 women after ablation of the breast on account of carcinoma. A deviation in some of the investigated indicators was found in 46,7% of the examined women. A total of 10,5% women had an elevated level of thyroid stimulating hormone, in 18,4% both antibodies were positive, in another 11,8% antibodies against thyroglobulin only were positive and in 9,2% antibodies against thyroid peroxidase were positive. In none of the women the thyroxine level was beyond the physiological, i.e. normal range, the triiodothyronine level was elevated in 5,2%. Newly diagnosed subclinical hypothyroidism in 10,5% of the group supports the hypothesis of a more frequent thyroid abnormality in women treated on account of breast cancer. The cause and sequelae of this finding will be investigated.

RESUMO

From 1984 to 1988 in the industrial area Most (70,000 workers) an analysis was performed in 138 patients with lung cancer (ICD-Nr. 162). From the results of analysis conclusions with relevance for medical opinion were derived. There are opportunities to incorporate a part of patients in the working process without difficulties, if the patient is free of signs of recidivation. The aim of our procedure is to improve the psychological situation of the patient, to reach a complete resocialization, to ensure the economic standard and to optimize the grant of sick-pay.

RESUMO

Electron microscopy of 57 needle biopsies from livers of 55 patients with chronic hepatitis, mostly of type B, revealed, in addition to typical hepatitis B virus nucleocapsids in 34 cases, also atypical intranuclear inclusions in 9 biopsies. These inclusions consisted of electron-dense particles similar in size to hepatitis B virus nucleocapsids. The possibility of an involvement of a hepatitis non-A non-B virus is discussed.

RESUMO

Replication of Lednice virus in chick embryo cells was studied for 72 hr after inoculation by infectivity titration and the indirect immunofluorescence technique. At 24 and 48 hr after inoculation, electron microscopy revealed spherical virions of uniform morphology, 80-105 nm in diameter, which were localized mostly extracellularly.

RESUMO

A method was worked out for supporting biological specimens with polyethylene glycol (PEG) for the preparation of ultrathin frozen sections. This method was used in the preparation of ultra-thin cryosections of various tissues and of human diploid cell suspensions infected with vaccina and Herpes simplex viruses. In such preparations it was possible to study stages of virus particle formation under the electron microscope.

RESUMO

A procedure with the use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 600 to support biological materials for ultracryotomy was developed. Developing and mature virions were demonstrated by electron microscopy in negatively stained frozen sections of vaccinia virus-infected human diploid cells and of herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 infected primary rabbit kidney cells. Approximate localisation of the virus particles in the cells was possible.

RESUMO

Crimean hemorrhagic fever (CHF) virus was detected by electron microscopy in ultrathin sections of CV-1 cells. The virus particles appeared spherical or oval and occurred both intra- and extracellularly. Based on their size and density of their contents, two types of virions, probably representing different phases of the reproduction cycle of CHF virus, could be distinguished.

RESUMO

In electron microscopy of rabbit blood leucocytes cultured after infection with a large dose of neurovaccinia virus, virus particles can be observed within 24 hours in the cytoplasm of the monocytoid cells (monocytes and macrophages) and occasionally in the polymorphonuclear cells, but never in the lymphocytes. The morphology of the virus particles does not differ from the description of these particles in other types of host cells. The virus replication cycle in the monocytoid cells is slow and the virus matures asynchronously. Virus replication causes infected cells to disintegrate.

RESUMO

A prophylactic effect of 6-amino-6-deoxy-D-glucose hydrochloride (AG) in influenza-infected mice was demonstrated. A dose of 500 mg AG per kg body-weight given intranasally 2000 mouse intranasal LD50) protected 32-40 per cent of the animals from death. The virus titres in the lungs and serum were lower in treated mice than in untreated ones. After AG administration, low interferon titres were demonstrated in the lungs and serum. The group of infected mice, untreated with AG, was examined electron microscopically. Virus was demonstrated on the surface of granular pneumocytes and in the lumen of lung alveoli.
