Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiograms (PTCs) of 74 cancer cases with obstruction of the biliary tree were reviewed and evaluated as to the location, degree of obstruction, and location of the obstructing elements ie, intraluminal polypoid intrusions and diffuse infiltration. Special attention was given to the diagnostic value of the sign of an extrinsic compressing mass, a disputed entity. Every one of the above parameters, including extrinsic mass compression effect, proved to be worthwhile in arriving at a reasonable diagnosis. A system for coding obstructions to give maximum information in minimum space for large series of cases and to improve diagnostic accuracy of PTC in the single case is presented.

Fibrosarcoma is a rare primary malignant tumor of the mediastinum. Three cases are presented with different presenting symptoms and clinical manifestations. Thoracotomy with biopsy of the mass is the only method for arriving at a definitive histologic diagnosis.

A modified form of tumor strangulation as a possible treatment modality is considered. Intermittent intra-aortic occlusion by means of specially designed catheters and equipment is described. As a preliminary feasibility study, occlusion in non-tumor-bearing animals has begun, with projection for future human cases anticipated. Theoretical concepts of substances from the occlusion process resulting in cure and specific immunity in experimental animals are evaluated, and the belief in the development of modified antigens and antibodies as a consequence of restriction of a growing tumor's proliferating blood supply is discussed.

Mediastinal lymphangioma is an uncommon benign tumor accounting for 0.7 to 4.5% of all mediastinal masses. Lymphangiomas consist of dilated cystic lymph spaces lined by single layers of endothelium and do not undergo malignant change. Most mediastinal lymphangiomas are asymptomatic. There are no specific radiological findings. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice and the prognosis is excellent.

A mixture of sulfacetamide, sulfathiazole, and sulfabenzamide was used to develop a rapid high-pressure liquid chromatographic assay. In addition, this study provided a means to develop concepts relating solvent molar polarization parameters and retention times. A linear correlation between molar polarization and retention time was observed and will permit reasonably rapid predictions about the dependent variable.
