Background: Genetic variation plays an important role in drug response, there are few relevant studies on patients with Alzheimer's disease continuum (ADC). Objective: This study focused on the associations between two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs3793790 and rs2177370) located in the CHAT gene and donepezil response in ADC patients, and further evaluated the associations between the two SNPs and ADC. Material and Methods: According to 2018 National Institute on Aging and Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) standard, amyloid ß-protein positive (Aß+) and negative (Aß-) patients were recruited according to the Aß-PET/CT standard. rs3793790 and rs2177370 were genotyped in buccal swab samples by using the MassARRAY system. We used the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) in Chinese version, caregiver evaluation, and prescribing behavior to assess therapeutic response during the 9-month period. Using logistic regression models, we analyzed the relationship between the two SNPs and donepezil response in 58 Aß+ patients treated with donepezil alone at the initial diagnosis of ADC. We also explored a probable link between the two SNPs and ADC in 147 Aß+ and 73 Aß- patients using a logistic regression analysis. Results: The chance of donepezil response was higher in patients with the G allele of rs3793790 and/or the A allele of rs2177370 than in those without (odds ratio (OR) 6.83, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.64-28.49). Additionally, the rs3793790 variant was not associated with ADC, whereas the A allele in rs2177370 increased 1.51-fold the ADC risk (OR 2.51, 95% CI: 1.28-4.95). Conclusion: The genetic variants of rs3793790 and rs2177370 were associated with the donepezil response, and rs2177370 may have a moderate relationship with the risk of ADC.

Background: Emerging evidence suggests the potential relationship between vitamin D deficiency and risk of cognitive impairment or dementia. To what extent the excess risk of dementia conferred by vitamin D deficiency is less clear. Objective: We summarized the current evidence from several aspects and further quantified these associations. Methods: We collected relevant prospective cohort studies by searching PubMed, Embase and Cochrane up to July 2023. The pooled relative risks (RR) were evaluated by random-effects models. Dose-response analyses were conducted by the method of two-stage generalized least squares regression. Results: Of 9,267 identified literatures, 23 were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analyses, among which 9 and 4 literatures were included in the dose-response analyses for the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Vitamin D deficiency exhibited a 1.42 times risk for dementia (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.21-1.65) and a 1.57-fold excess risk for AD (95% CI = 1.15-2.14). And vitamin D deficiency was associated with 34% elevated risk with cognitive impairment (95% CI = 1.19-1.52). Additionally, vitamin D was non-linearly related to the risk of dementia (pnonlinearity = 0.0000) and AD (pnonlinearity = 0.0042). The approximate 77.5-100 nmol/L 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was optimal for reducing dementia risk. And the AD risk seemed to be decreased when the 25(OH)D level >40.1 nmol/L. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency was a risk factor for dementia, AD, and cognitive impairment. The nonlinear relationships may further provide the optimum dose of 25(OH)D for dementia prevention.

To detect low-frequency gravitational waves, it is necessary to eliminate the interference of geo-noise and build a laser interference gravitational-wave detection device in space. Space gravitational-wave detection missions, namely Taiji, LISA, and Tianqin, have been planning to achieve picometer sensitivity on an interferometer arm of several million kilometers to meet the gravitational-wave detection requirements. Because of the orbit evolution and the time delay in interferometer arms, the direction of the transmitted laser beam changes; consequently, a remote telescope cannot receive the laser beam to complete the inter-satellite laser interference. In this study, a two-dimensional point-ahead angle mechanism (2DPAAM) is designed and demonstrated to solve the aforementioned problem. Based on the design concept of aligning the rotation center with the mirror surface center, the 2DPAAM employs a four-link flexible-hinge structure, length expanding and contracting piezoelectric stack actuators, and closed-loop control of capacitive sensors to realize two-dimensional picometer-stable, high-precision rotation. A static model is established to analyze the rotational characteristics, and finite element analysis is performed to study the mechanical properties and to verify the rotational characteristics. The yaw and pitch stiffness errors are ∼0.93% and 5.9%, respectively, when the theoretical results are compared with the simulation results. A series of experiments are conducted on the developed 2DPAAM, and the results show that the rotary ranges of yaw and pitch motions attain ±270 and ±268 µrad, respectively. The rotational accuracies of both yaw and pitch motions attain ∼0.35 µrad, and the optical path difference is less than 10pm/Hz when the frequency is between 1 mHz and 1 Hz, by analogy.

Heavy metal pollutants in sediment greatly impact the estuarine environment and ecosystems, increasingly influenced by anthropogenic perturbations. Here, we examined the surface sediments of the Modaomen estuary in 2003, 2015, and 2021 to understand how human-induced changes influence the fate of heavy metals in the estuary's sediments. The potential ecological risk index (RI) suggests Cd should be the priority pollutant for environmental pollution control due to its high toxicity coefficient. In each sampling period, two main sources were identified through normalized heavy metals and PCA-MLR: natural and mixed anthropogenic sources (agricultural, industrial, and traffic activities), reflecting an increase in heavy metals pollution, later mitigated by successful environmental protection measures. Moreover, anthropogenic activities have not only impacted the sources discharge of heavy metals but have also influenced their spatial and temporal distribution through factors such as land reclamation, leading to sediment coarsening and reduced heavy metal content in specific areas.

Sporadic or late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) accounts for more than 95% of Alzheimer's disease (AD) cases without any family history. Although genome-wide association studies have identified associated risk genes and loci for LOAD, numerous studies suggest that many adverse environmental factors, such as social isolation, are associated with an increased risk of dementia. However, the underlying mechanisms of social isolation in AD progression remain elusive. In the current study, we found that 7 days of social isolation could trigger pattern separation impairments and presynaptic abnormalities of the mossy fibre-CA3 circuit in AD mice. We also revealed that social isolation disrupted histone acetylation and resulted in the downregulation of 2 dentate gyrus (DG)-enriched miRNAs, which simultaneously target reticulon 3 (RTN3), an endoplasmic reticulum protein that aggregates in presynaptic regions to disturb the formation of functional mossy fibre boutons (MFBs) by recruiting multiple mitochondrial and vesicle-related proteins. Interestingly, the aggregation of RTN3 also recruits the PP2A B subunits to suppress PP2A activity and induce tau hyperphosphorylation, which, in turn, further elevates RTN3 and forms a vicious cycle. Finally, using an artificial intelligence-assisted molecular docking approach, we determined that senktide, a selective agonist of neurokinin3 receptors (NK3R), could reduce the binding of RTN3 with its partners. Moreover, application of senktide in vivo effectively restored DG circuit disorders in socially isolated AD mice. Taken together, our findings not only demonstrate the epigenetic regulatory mechanism underlying mossy fibre synaptic disorders orchestrated by social isolation and tau pathology but also reveal a novel potential therapeutic strategy for AD.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota could affect the onset and development of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) through modulating metabolic and immune pathways. However, the vascular mechanisms involved remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the gut microbiota associated with VCI and examine the mediating effects of regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) to explore potential therapeutic targets for VCI. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled patients with VCI (n = 16) and healthy controls (n = 18) from the Chinese Imaging, Biomarkers, and Lifestyle study between January 1 and June 30, 2022. The gut microbiota composition and diversity were determined by 16 S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. The association between gut microbiota and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores was determined using Spearman's correlation analysis. Regional CBF was calculated using pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling. The mediating effects of regional CBF on the relationship between specific gut microbiota and cognition in VCI were investigated using mediation analysis. RESULTS: Compared to healthy controls, patients with VCI had significantly greater abundance of Bifidobacterium, Veillonella, R uminococcus gnavus , Fusobacterium, and Erysipelatoclostridium and smaller abundance of Collinsella. The abundance of Ruminococcus gnavus was negatively associated with MoCA scores in patients with VCI, with the CBF in the left hypothalamus, right hypothalamus, and left amygdala accounting for 63.96%, 48.22%, and 36.51%, respectively, of this association after adjusting for confounders. CONCLUSIONS: Ruminococcus gnavus is associated with cognition in VCI, which is strongly mediated by CBF in the bilateral hypothalamus and left amygdala. These findings highlight the potential regulatory roles of nutrition and metabolism-related areas of the brain in VCI.

Future GRACE-like geodesy missions could benefit from adopting accelerometer technology akin to that of the LISA Pathfinder, which employed laser interferometric readout at the sub-picometer level in addition to the conventional capacitive sensing, which is at best at the level of 100 pm. Improving accelerometer performance holds great potential to enhance the scientific output of forthcoming missions, carrying invaluable implications for research in climate, water resource management, and disaster risk reduction. To reach sub-picometer displacement sensing precision in the millihertz range, laser interferometers rely on suppression of laser-frequency noise by several orders of magnitude. Many optical frequency stabilization methods are available with varying levels of complexity, size, and performance. In this paper, we describe the performance of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on a compact monolithic optic. The setup consists of a commercial fiber injector, a custom-designed pentaprism used to split and recombine the laser beam, and two photoreceivers placed at the complementary output ports of the interferometer. The structural stability of the prism is transferred to the laser frequency via amplification, integration, and feedback of the balanced-detection signal, achieving a fractional frequency instability better than 6 parts in 1013, corresponding to an interferometer pathlength stability better than 1pm/Hz. The prism was designed to host a second interferometer to interrogate the position of a test mass. This optical scheme has been dubbed "single-element dual-interferometer" or SEDI.

BACKGROUND: Extracellular free water (FW) resulting from white matter degeneration limits the sensitivity of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in predicting Alzheimer's disease (AD). PURPOSE: To evaluate the sensitivity of FW-DTI in detecting white matter microstructural changes in AD. To validate the effectiveness of FW-DTI indices to predict amyloid-beta (Aß) positivity in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subtypes. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Thirty-eight Aß-negative cognitively healthy (CH) controls (68.74 ± 8.28 years old, 55% female), 15 Aß-negative MCI patients (MCI-n) (68.87 ± 8.83 years old, 60% female), 29 Aß-positive MCI patients (MCI-p) (73.03 ± 7.05 years old, 52% female), and 29 Aß-positive AD patients (72.93 ± 9.11 years old, 55% female). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3.0T; DTI, T1 -weighted, T2 -weighted, T2 star-weighted angiography, and Aß PET (18 F-florbetaben or 11 C-PIB). ASSESSMENT: FW-corrected and standard diffusion indices were analyzed using trace-based spatial statistics. Area under the curve (AUC) in distinguishing MCI subtypes were compared using support vector machine (SVM). STATISTICAL TESTS: Chi-squared test, one-way analysis of covariance, general linear regression analyses, nonparametric permutation tests, partial Pearson's correlation, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, and linear SVM. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Compared with CH/MCI-n/MCI-p, AD showed significant change in tissue compartment indices of FW-DTI. No difference was found in the FW index among pair-wise group comparisons (the minimum FWE-corrected P = 0.114). There was a significant association between FW-DTI indices and memory and visuospatial function. The SVM classifier with tissue radial diffusivity as an input feature had the best classification performance of MCI subtypes (AUC = 0.91), and the classifying accuracy of FW-DTI was all over 89.89%. DATA CONCLUSION: FW-DTI indices prove to be potential biomarkers of AD. The classification of MCI subtypes based on SVM and FW-DTI indices has good accuracy and could help early diagnosis. BACKGROUND: ß1-blockers could improve clinical outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease by lowering the heart rate, blood pressure, and myocardial contractility. Moreover, recent studies have suggested that ß1-blockers may also have the potential to reduce bleeding risk. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the association between ß1-blockers and bleeding risk in the patients prescribed with potent dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: Patients with ACS or undergoing PCI treated by DAPT of ticagrelor and aspirin were consecutively recruited. Follow-up for all eligible patients was conducted for 1 year. Major bleeding outcomes were defined as events that were type ≥2 based on the Bleeding Academic Research Consortium (BARC) criteria. RESULTS: A total of 1,113 eligible ticagrelor-treated patients were recruited. During the 1-year follow-up interval, 142 (12.6%) patients experienced BARC ≥2 bleedings including 23 patients (2.1%) suffering BARC ≥3 bleedings, with the most common site of bleeding located in the gastrointestinal tract. ß1-blockers treatment was associated with a lower risk of BARC ≥2 bleedings (11.2% vs. 23.3%, adjusted HR: 0.42, 95% CI: 0.28-0.62, P < 0.01). Moreover, metoprolol (11.1% vs. 23.3%, adjusted HR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.37-0.83, P < 0.01) and bisoprolol (11.3% vs. 23.3%, adjusted HR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.33-0.96, P = 0.04) had similar effects on the reduction of bleeding risk. CONCLUSION: ß1-blockers might be beneficial for the reduction of bleeding risk in potent dual antiplatelet therapy patients with ACS or undergoing PCI.

Recent MPOX viral resurgences have mobilized public health agencies around the world. Recognizing the significant risk of MPOX outbreaks, large-scale human testing, and immunization campaigns have been initiated by local, national, and global public health authorities. Recently, traditional clinical surveillance campaigns for MPOX have been complemented with wastewater surveillance (WWS), building on the effectiveness of existing wastewater programs that were built to monitor SARS-CoV-2 and recently expanded to include influenza and respiratory syncytial virus surveillance in wastewaters. In the present study, we demonstrate and further support the finding that MPOX viral fragments agglomerate in the wastewater solids fraction. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the current, most commonly used MPOX assays are equally effective at detecting low titers of MPOX viral signal in wastewaters. Finally, MPOX WWS is shown to be more effective at passively tracking outbreaks and/or resurgences of the disease than clinical testing alone in smaller communities with low human clinical case counts of MPOX.

This paper evaluates the potential application of Raman baselines in characterizing organic deposition. Taking the layered sediments (Stromatolite) formed by the growth of early life on the Earth as the research object, Raman spectroscopy is an essential means to detect deep-space extraterrestrial life. Fluorescence is the main factor that interferes with Raman spectroscopy detection, which will cause the enhancement of the Raman baseline and annihilate Raman information. The paper aims to evaluate fluorescence contained in the Raman baseline and characterize organic sedimentary structure using the Raman baseline. This study achieves spectral image fusion combined with mapping technology to obtain high spatial and spectral resolution fusion images. To clarify that the fluorescence of organic matter deposition is the main factor causing Raman baseline enhancement, 5041 Raman spectra were obtained in the scanning area of 710 µm × 710 µm, and the correlation mechanism between the gray level of the light-dark layer of the detection point and the Raman baseline was compared. The spatial distribution of carbonate minerals and organic precipitations was detected by combining mapping technology. In addition, based on the BI-IHS algorithm, the spectral image fusion of Raman fluorescence mapping and reflection micrograph, polarization micrograph, and orthogonal polarization micrograph are realized, respectively. A fusion image with high spectral resolution and high spatial resolution is obtained. The results show that the Raman baseline can be used as helpful information to characterize stromatolite organic sedimentary structure.

The neuron-glia cross-talk is critical to brain homeostasis and is particularly affected by neurodegenerative diseases. How neurons manipulate the neuron-astrocyte interaction under pathological conditions, such as hyperphosphorylated tau, a pathological hallmark in Alzheimer's disease (AD), remains elusive. In this study, we identified excessively elevated neuronal expression of adenosine receptor 1 (Adora1 or A1R) in 3×Tg mice, MAPT P301L (rTg4510) mice, patients with AD, and patient-derived neurons. The up-regulation of A1R was found to be tau pathology dependent and posttranscriptionally regulated by Mef2c via miR-133a-3p. Rebuilding the miR-133a-3p/A1R signal effectively rescued synaptic and memory impairments in AD mice. Furthermore, neuronal A1R promoted the release of lipocalin 2 (Lcn2) and resulted in astrocyte activation. Last, silencing neuronal Lcn2 in AD mice ameliorated astrocyte activation and restored synaptic plasticity and learning/memory. Our findings reveal that the tau pathology remodels neuron-glial cross-talk and promotes neurodegenerative progression. Approaches targeting A1R and modulating this signaling pathway might be a potential therapeutic strategy for AD.

BACKGROUND: Large polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a standard regimen for bowel preparation. However, elderly patients suffered from adverse events. This study was to compare the efficacy and safety of oral magnesium sulfate solution (MSS) vs standard PEG in elderly patients undergoing colonoscopy. METHODS: Elderly patients aged 60-90 years, from two endoscopic centers, were enrolled in China. Patients were randomized to take a low dose of MSS or a standard PEG regime in a split-dose regime. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with adequate bowel preparation, which was defined as the total Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) ≥6 and each segmental BBPS was ≥2. Secondary outcomes included adenoma detection rate (ADR), safety, adverse events, cecal intubation rate, willingness to repeat BP, and so on. RESULTS: 1174 elderly patients were randomly allocated to the MSS group (n = 588) or the standard group (n = 586). Adequate BP was achieved in 94.0% of patients in the MSS group and 92.5% in the control (p = .287). ADR was also comparable between the two groups (43.0% and 39.9%, p = .282). Compared with the standard group, MSS group reported less abdominal discomfort (1.7% vs 6.0%), less nausea (13.6% vs 21.0%) and vomiting (1.2% vs 4.2%). The change in serum potassium levels after preparation in the standard group was significantly lower than that in the MSS group (-0.19 ± 0.08 vs -0.41 ± 0.11, p = .037). CONCLUSIONS: Low dose of MSS was not inferior to the standard PEG regime in terms of bowel preparation quality for elderly patients. Low-dose MSS offered fewer adverse events and better tolerability. It is a preferable choice for the elderly to undergo bowel preparation for colonoscopy. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04948567.

Networks of optical clocks find applications in precise navigation1,2, in efforts to redefine the fundamental unit of the 'second'3-6 and in gravitational tests7. As the frequency instability for state-of-the-art optical clocks has reached the 10-19 level8,9, the vision of a global-scale optical network that achieves comparable performances requires the dissemination of time and frequency over a long-distance free-space link with a similar instability of 10-19. However, previous attempts at free-space dissemination of time and frequency at high precision did not extend beyond dozens of kilometres10,11. Here we report time-frequency dissemination with an offset of 6.3 × 10-20 ± 3.4 × 10-19 and an instability of less than 4 × 10-19 at 10,000 s through a free-space link of 113 km. Key technologies essential to this achievement include the deployment of high-power frequency combs, high-stability and high-efficiency optical transceiver systems and efficient linear optical sampling. We observe that the stability we have reached is retained for channel losses up to 89 dB. The technique we report can not only be directly used in ground-based applications, but could also lay the groundwork for future satellite time-frequency dissemination.

Wastewater surveillance (WWS) of SARS-CoV-2 was proven to be a reliable and complementary tool for population-wide monitoring of COVID-19 disease incidence but was not as rigorously explored as an indicator for disease burden throughout the pandemic. Prior to global mass immunization campaigns and during the spread of the wildtype COVID-19 and the Alpha variant of concern (VOC), viral measurement of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater was a leading indicator for both COVID-19 incidence and disease burden in communities. As the two-dose vaccination rates escalated during the spread of the Delta VOC in Jul. 2021 through Dec. 2021, relations weakened between wastewater signal and community COVID-19 disease incidence and maintained a strong relationship with clinical metrics indicative of disease burden (new hospital admissions, ICU admissions, and deaths). Further, with the onset of the vaccine-resistant Omicron BA.1 VOC in Dec. 2021 through Mar. 2022, wastewater again became a strong indicator of both disease incidence and burden during a period of limited natural immunization (no recent infection), vaccine escape, and waned vaccine effectiveness. Lastly, with the populations regaining enhanced natural and vaccination immunization shortly prior to the onset of the Omicron BA.2 VOC in mid-Mar 2022, wastewater is shown to be a strong indicator for both disease incidence and burden. Hospitalization-to-wastewater ratio is further shown to be a good indicator of VOC virulence when widespread clinical testing is limited. In the future, WWS is expected to show moderate indication of incidence and strong indication of disease burden in the community during future potential seasonal vaccination campaigns.

Clinical testing has been the cornerstone of public health monitoring and infection control efforts in communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. With the anticipated reduction of clinical testing as the disease moves into an endemic state, SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance (WWS) will have greater value as an important diagnostic tool. An in-depth analysis and understanding of the metrics derived from WWS is required to interpret and utilize WWS-acquired data effectively (McClary-Gutierrez et al., 2021; O'Keeffe, 2021). In this study, the SARS-CoV-2 wastewater signal to clinical cases (WC) ratio was investigated across seven cities in Canada over periods ranging from 8 to 21 months. This work demonstrates that significant increases in the WC ratio occurred when clinical testing eligibility was modified to appointment-only testing, identifying a period of insufficient clinical testing (resulting in a reduction to testing access and a reduction in the number of daily tests) in these communities, despite increases in the wastewater signal. Furthermore, the WC ratio decreased significantly in 6 of the 7 studied locations, serving as a potential signal of the emergence of the Alpha variant of concern (VOC) in a relatively non-immunized community (40-60 % allelic proportion), while a more muted decrease in the WC ratio signaled the emergence of the Delta VOC in a relatively well-immunized community (40-60 % allelic proportion). Finally, a significant decrease in the WC ratio signaled the emergence of the Omicron VOC, likely because of the variant's greater effectiveness at evading immunity, leading to a significant number of new reported clinical cases, even when community immunity was high. The WC ratio, used as an additional monitoring metric, could complement clinical case counts and wastewater signals as individual metrics in its potential ability to identify important epidemiological occurrences, adding value to WWS as a diagnostic technology during the COVID-19 pandemic and likely for future pandemics.

Recurrent influenza epidemics and pandemic potential are significant risks to global health. Public health authorities use clinical surveillance to locate and monitor influenza and influenza-like cases and outbreaks to mitigate hospitalizations and deaths. Currently, global integration of clinical surveillance is the only reliable method for reporting influenza types and subtypes to warn of emergent pandemic strains. The utility of wastewater surveillance (WWS) during the COVID-19 pandemic as a less resource intensive replacement or complement for clinical surveillance has been predicated on analyzing viral fragments in wastewater. We show here that influenza virus targets are stable in wastewater and partitions favorably to the solids fraction. By quantifying, typing, and subtyping the virus in municipal wastewater and primary sludge during a community outbreak, we forecasted a citywide flu outbreak with a 17-day lead time and provided population-level viral subtyping in near real-time to show the feasibility of influenza virus WWS at the municipal and neighbourhood levels in near real time using minimal resources and infrastructure.

BACKGROUND: There is limited information on the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in obstetric settings in Canada, beyond the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (February to June 2020). We sought to describe the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant people admitted to triage units at a tertiary care hospital in Ottawa, Canada. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive study of pregnant people admitted to obstetric triage assessment units at The Ottawa Hospital between Oct. 19 and Nov. 27, 2020 (second local wave of the COVID-19 pandemic). Participants underwent SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (via naso- or oropharyngeal swabs) and serology testing upon admission. We excluded individuals younger than 18 years, those who did not speak English or French, those who enrolled in conflicting studies, those admitted for pregnancy termination and those triaged between 11:31 pm and 7:29 am. Swab and serology samples were analyzed using digital droplet PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, respectively. We defined SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity as a positive result for immunoglobulin (Ig) G, either alone or in combination with IgM or IgA. RESULTS: Of the 632 eligible patients, 363 (57.4%) consented to participation and 362 collectively provided 284 swab and 352 blood samples eligible for analysis. Common reasons for declining participation included feeling overwhelmed or anxious, being worried about repercussions of testing, pain or discomfort with testing or disinterest in research. Participants were mostly multiparous (53.9%) and in their third trimester upon admission (88.4%). In all, 18 (4.9%) participants had evidence of SARS-CoV-2 exposure; 2 (0.7%) of 284 were positive for SARS-CoV-2 by PCR and 16 (4.5%) of 352 were positive for IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2. INTERPRETATION: During the second local wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of active SARS-CoV-2 infection among obstetric patients in Ottawa was 0.7% and seroprevalence was 4.5%. Our low participation rate highlights the need for improvements in patient education and public health messaging on the benefits of SARS-CoV-2 testing programs.

This paper proposes a method to identify the blood of 4 poultry species (chicken, duck, goose and pigeon) based on Raman spectroscopy and its baseline. Samples were prepared by pretreatment methods of freezing, thawing, and dilution. The Raman spectra of dynamic blood and static blood were measured, respectively, and the spectral differences between the two research schemes were analyzed. The four species of poultry blood were identified based on the Raman spectroscopy and its baseline. The results show that the method can realize the identification of four species of poultry blood. In addition, the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a technique for determining carotenoids in blood has been clearly confirmed, which opens up the possibility to quickly determine whether poultry eats feed containing carotenoids without sample preparation.
