OBJECTIVE: The present study investigates whether psychological factors influence the habituation or sensitization effect during repeated COVID-19 outbreaks. METHOD: A total of 838 social workers from districts affected by different waves of COVID-19 outbreaks (two waves, n = 387; one wave, n = 177; zero waves, n = 274) reported their posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, psychological security, emotional regulation, resilience, spiritual health, and social support (December 2021). RESULTS: The rate of PTSD among social workers stands at 34% (cutoff point 38). Social workers developed a habituation response amid the ongoing pandemic, with individuals who encountered a higher number of COVID-19 outbreaks exhibiting fewer symptoms of PTSD (F = 3.04, p < .05, η² = 0.007). Social workers who experienced two outbreaks had significantly lower PTSD symptoms than those who did not experience any (p = .018, 95% CI [0.431, 4.635]). A bootstrapped multiple mediation analysis indicates that psychological security (indirect effect: ß = -0.590, 95% CI [-0.989, -0.192]) and emotional regulation (indirect effect: ß = -0.474, 95% CI [-0.899, -0.069]) completely mediate the association between outbreaks of COVID-19 and PTSD symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of PTSD symptoms was high in social workers. Chinese social workers underwent a habituation effect after repeated outbreaks of COVID-19. Improving psychological security and emotional regulation can reduce PTSD symptoms due to the repeated outbreak of COVID-19 among the public. AIMS: Patients with heart valvular regurgitation is increasing; early screening of potential patients developing heart failure (HF) is crucial. METHODS: From 1 November 2019 to 31 October 2023, a total of 509 patients with heart valvular regurgitation hospitalized in the Department of Cardiovascular Disease of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Medicine were enrolled. Three hundred fifty-six cases were selected as the training set for modelling, and 153 cases were selected as the validation set for the internal validation of the model. RESULTS: A predictive model of heart failure with the following nine risk factors was developed: atrial fibrillation (AF), pulmonary infection (PI), coronary artery disease (CAD), creatinine (CREA), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), d-dimer (DDi), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDd), mitral regurgitation (MR) and aortic regurgitation (AR). The model was evaluated by the C-index [the training set: area under curve (AUC) 0.937, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.911-0.963; the validation set: AUC 0.928, 95% CI 0.890-0.967]. Hosmer-Lemeshow test (the training set: χ2 10.908, P = 0.207; the validation set: χ2 4.896, P = 0.769) revealed that both the training and validation sets performed well in terms of model differentiation and calibration. Decision curve analysis showed that both the training and validation sets have higher net benefits, indicating that the model has good utility. Ten-fold cross-validation showed that the training set has high similarities with the validation set, which means that the model has good stability. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of heart failure in patients with valvular regurgitation has a significant correlation with AF, PI, CAD, CREA, LDL-C, DDi, LVEDd, MR and AR. Based on these risk factors, a prediction model for heart failure was developed and validated, which showed good differentiation and utility, high accuracy and stability, providing a method for predicting heart failure.

Nonlinear sum frequency generation (SFG) and difference frequency generation (DFG) are fundamental methods to obtain new light sources for various applications. However, most of the on-chip SFG and DFG are based on conventional resonators, lacking robustness against fabrication defects. Here, we demonstrate topologically protected SFG and DFG in a second-order topological photonic system. The mechanism is based on the nonlinear interaction between three high-Q corner modes inside dual topological band gaps. The frequency matching condition for SFG and DFG is precisely satisfied by designing a valley-photonic-crystal-like topological system, which provides more freedoms to tune the corner modes. The topological SFG and DFG are achieved with high conversion efficiency, and the underlying topological physics is revealed. This work opens up avenues toward topologically protected nonlinear frequency conversion, and can find applications in the fields of on-chip single-photon detections and optical quantum memories with robustness against defects.

Measurement device independent quantum key distribution (MDI QKD) has attracted growing attention for its immunity to attacks at the measurement unit, but its unique structure limits the secret key rate. Utilizing the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique and reducing error rates are effective strategies for enhancing the secret key rate. Reducing error rates often requires active feedback control of wavelengths using precise external references. However, for a multiwavelength laser, employing multiple references to stabilize each wavelength output places stringent demands on these references and significantly increases system complexity. Here, we demonstrate a stable, wavelength-tunable multiwavelength laser with an output wavelength ranging from 1270 to 1610 nm. Through precise temperature control and stable drive current, we passively lock the laser wavelength, achieving remarkable wavelength stability. This significantly reduce the error rate, leading to an almost doubling of the secret key rate compared to previous experiments. Furthermore, the exceptional wavelength stability offered by our multiwavelength laser, combined with the WDM technique, has further boosted the secret key rate of MDI QKD. With a wide wavelength tuning range of 5.1 nm, our multiwavelength laser facilitates flexible operation across multiple dense wavelength division multiplexing channels. Coupled with high wavelength stability and multiple wavelength outputs simultaneously, this laser offers a promising solution for a high-rate MDI QKD system.

In this study, a Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H/N-H [4+2] annulation of oxadiazolones with iodonium ylides has been developed, which afforded a series of diverse fused-isoquinolines and fused-pyridines in moderate to high yields. These divergent synthesis protocols featured mild conditions, broad substrate scope, and functional-group compatibility. In addition, scale-up synthesis, related applications and preliminary mechanistic explorations were also accomplished.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into smart agriculture boosts production and management efficiency, facilitating sustainable agricultural development. In intensive agricultural management, adopting eco-friendly and effective pesticides is crucial to promote green agricultural practices. However, exploring new insecticides species is a difficult and time-consuming task that involves significant risks. Enhancing compound druggability in the lead discovery phase could considerably shorten the discovery cycle, accelerating insecticides research and development. The Insecticide Activity Prediction (IAPred) model, a novel classic artificial intelligence-based method for evaluating the potential insecticidal activity of unknown functional compounds, is introduced in this study. The IAPred model utilized 27 insecticide-likeness features from PaDEL descriptors and employed an ensemble of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms using the hard-vote mechanism, achieving an accuracy rate of 86 %. Notably, the IAPred model outperforms current models by accurately predicting the efficacy of novel insecticides such as nicofluprole, overcoming the limitations inherent in existing insecticide structures. Our research presents a practical approach for discovering and optimizing novel insecticide lead compounds quickly and efficiently.

In cancer, synthetic lethality refers to the drug-induced inactivation of one gene and the inhibition of another in cancer cells by a drug, resulting in the death of only cancer cells; however, this effect is not present in normal cells, leading to targeted killing of cancer cells. Recent intensive epigenetic research has revealed that aberrant epigenetic changes are more frequently observed than gene mutations in certain cancers. Recently, numerous studies have reported various methylation synthetic lethal combinations involving DNA damage repair genes, metabolic pathway genes, and paralogs with significant results in cellular models, some of which have already entered clinical trials with promising results. This review systematically introduces the advantages of methylation synthetic lethality and describes the lethal mechanisms of methylation synthetic lethal combinations that have recently demonstrated success in cellular models. Furthermore, we discuss the future opportunities and challenges of methylation synthetic lethality in targeted anticancer therapies.

Spinal stenosis (SS) is frequently caused by spinal ligament abnormalities, such as ossification and hypertrophy, which narrow the spinal canal and compress the spinal cord or nerve roots, leading to myelopathy or sciatic symptoms; however, the underlying pathological mechanism is poorly understood, hampering the development of effective nonsurgical treatments. Our study aims to investigate the role of co-expression hub genes in patients with spinal ligament ossification and hypertrophy. To achieve this, we conducted an integrated analysis by combining RNA-seq data of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and microarray profiles of hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum (HLF), consistently pinpointing CTSD as an upregulated hub gene in both OPLL and HLF. Subsequent RT-qPCR and IHC assessments confirmed the heightened expression of CTSD in human OPLL, ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF), and HLF samples. We observed an increase in CTSD expression in human PLL and LF primary cells during osteogenic differentiation, as indicated by western blotting (WB). To assess CTSD's impact on osteogenic differentiation, we manipulated its expression levels in human PLL and LF primary cells using siRNAs and lentivirus, as demonstrated by WB, ALP staining, and ARS. Our findings showed that suppressing CTSD hindered the osteogenic differentiation potential of PLL and LF cells, while overexpressing CTSD activated osteogenic differentiation. These findings identify CTSD as a potential therapeutic target for treating spinal stenosis associated with spinal ligament abnormalities.

The strong coupling between society and ecosystem makes socio-ecological risks become the main object of risk management. As the link between ecological and social processes, ecosystem services (ESs) are the core variable in deconstructing the social-ecological risks and the crucial point in resolving the risks. We explored the concept and the internal formation mechanisms of socio-ecological risk combining ESs, and further put the cascade logic and evolution process of "real risk-risk perception-risk behavior". Based on driver-pressure-state-impact-response framework (DPSIR), we proposed a framework for analyzing socio-ecological risk, and expanded the content and methodology system of research and management practices related to socio-ecological risks. We proposed that socio-ecological risk research coupled with ESs should focus on: 1) exploring the transmission mechanism between ecosystem processes, ecosystem services, and human well-being; 2) exploring the response mechanism of social subject behavior and its impacts on ecosystem services and human well-being; 3) construction of a multi-scale assessment model for social ecological risks coupled with ESs. The socio-ecological risk analysis framework for coupled ecosystem services was based on the mutual feedback between human and nature to explore the logic of risk formation, evolution, and governance, which could provide ideas for clarifying the deep meaning of ecological problems and selecting pathways to resolve socio-ecological risks.

A novel metal-free synthesis of 3-substituted isocoumarins through a sequential O-acylation/Wittig reaction has been established. The readily accessible (2-carboxybenzyl)-triphenylphosphonium bromide and diverse chlorides produced various 1H-isochromen-1-one in the presence of triethylamine, employing sequential O-acylation and an intramolecular Wittig reaction of acid anhydride. Reactions using these facile conditions have exhibited high functional group tolerance and excellent yields (up to 90%). Moreover, the fluorescence properties of isocoumarin derivatives were evaluated at the theoretical and experimental levels to determine their potential application in fluorescent materials. These derivatives have good photoluminescence in THF with a large Stokes shift and an absolute fluorescence quantum yield of up to 14%.

In this study, we investigated the concentration of airborne influenza virus in daycare centers and influencing factors, such as common cold prevalence, air pollutants, and meteorological factors. A total of 209 air samples were collected from daycare centers in Kaohsiung and the influenza virus was analyzed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Air pollutants and metrological factors were measured using real-time monitoring equipment. Winter had the highest positive rates of airborne influenza virus and the highest prevalence of the common cold, followed by summer and autumn. The concentration of CO was significantly positively correlated with airborne influenza virus. Daycare center A, with natural ventilation and air condition systems, had a higher concentration of airborne influenza A virus, airborne fungi, and airborne bacteria, as well as a higher prevalence of the common cold, than daycare center B, with a mechanical ventilation system and air purifiers, while the concentrations of CO2, CO, and UFPs in daycare center A were lower than those in daycare center B. We successfully detected airborne influenza virus in daycare centers, demonstrating that aerosol sampling for influenza can provide novel epidemiological insights and inform the management of influenza in daycare centers.

Burn patients face cardiopulmonary failure risks, with recent observational studies suggesting promising outcomes for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). However, the effectiveness and long-term survival remain unclear. Our study aims to assess mortality risk factors and long-term survival in burn patients with and without ECMO. This study used Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database and designed a case-control with onefold propensity score matching across variables including sex, age, total body surface area (TBSA) burned, and index date. We analyzed mortality and survival risk factors in each stratified group with/without ECMO. Finally, we analyze the mortality according to ECMO and TBSA burned, and the cause of death and long-term survival. From 2000 to 2015, 4,556 burn patients with ECMO compared to an equivalent number without ECMO. Primary mortality include male, age >65, TBSA ≥30%, escharotomy, hemodialysis, and bacteremia. The ECMO group showed lower survival across all stratified risk factors, with the primary cause of death being burn-related issues, followed by respiratory and heart failure. The overall mortality rate was 54.41% with ECMO and 40.94% without ECMO (p < 0.001). Additionally, long-term survival is lower in the group with ECMO. This research provides a valuable real-world gross report about ECMO efficacy and long-term survival among burn patients with/without ECMO.

Based on the first-principles calculations, ferroelectricBi2O2X(X=S,Se,Te)monolayers with unequivalent in-plane lattice constants are confirmed to be the ground state, which is consistent with the experiment result (Ghoshet al2019Nano Lett.195703-09), and the anisotropic optical property is firstly investigated. We find that the polarizations ofBi2O2Xmonolayers points along the direction ofa-axis, andBi2O2Temonolayer process the largest polarization. Furthermore, both the biaxial and uniaxial strains are favor for the enhancement of polarization ofBi2O2Xmonolayers. It should be mentioned that the type of band gap will convert from indirect to direct forBi2O2Temonolayer when thea-axial tensile strain is larger than 2%. At last, the optical absorption coefficient forBi2O2Xmonolayers are calculated, and we obtain thatBi2O2Temonolayer has the strongest optical absorption within the range of visible light, the anisotropy and possible strain engineering to improve the optical absorption are discussed in detail. Our findings are significant in fields of optoelectronics and photovoltaics.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) frequently pose a threat to the biosphere, impacting ecosystems, flora, fauna, and the surrounding environment. Industrial emissions of VOCs often include the presence of water vapor, which, in turn, diminishes the adsorption capacity and efficacy of adsorbents. This occurs due to the competitive adsorption of water vapor, which competes with target pollutants for adsorption sites on the adsorbent material. In this study, hydrophobic activated carbons (BMIMPF6-AC (L), BMIMPF6-AC (g), and BMIMPF6-AC-H) were successfully prepared using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6) to adsorb toluene under humidity environment. The adsorption performance and mechanism of the resulting ionic liquid-modified activated carbon for toluene in a high-humidity environment were evaluated to explore the potential application of ionic liquids as hydrophobic modifiers. The results indicated that BMIMPF6-AC-H exhibited superior hydrophobicity. The toluene adsorption capacity of BMIMPF6-AC-H was 1.53 times higher than that of original activated carbon, while the adsorption capacity for water vapor was only 37.30% of it at 27 °C and 77% RH. The Y-N model well-fitted the dynamic adsorption experiments. To elucidate the microscopic mechanism of hydrophobic modification, the Independent Gradient Model (IGM) method was employed to characterize the intermolecular interactions between BMIMPF6 and toluene. Overall, this study introduces a new modifier for hydrophobic modification of activated carbon, which could enhance the efficiency of activated carbon in treating industrial VOCs.

Interlayer intercalation engineering shows great feasibility to improve the structure stability of the layered oxides. Although high Zn-storage capability has been attained based on the pillar effect of multifarious intercalants, an in-depth understanding the synergistic effect of intercalated multiple metal ions is still in deficiency. Herein, alkali metal ion K+, alkaline earth metal ion Mg2+ and trivalent metal ion Al3+ are introduced into the VO interlayer of V2O5. Due to the different electronegativity and hydrated ion radius of K+, Mg2+ and Al3+, adjusting the relative proportions of these metal ions can achieve an appropriate interlayer spacing, stable layer structure and regular morphology, which facilitates the transport kinetics of Zn2+. Under the synergistic effect of pre-intercalated multi-metal ion, the optimal tri-metal ion intercalated hydrated V2O5 cathode exhibits a high specific capacity of 382.4 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, and long-term cycling stability with capacity retention of 86 % after 2000 cycles at the high current density of 10 A g-1. Ex-situ and kinetic characterizations reveal the fast charge transfer and reversible Zn2+ intercalation mechanism. The multi-ion engineering strategy provides an effective way to design desirable layered cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) poses a global public health challenge, often associated with elevated mortality rates and a grim prognosis. A crucial aspect of the inflammatory injury and healing process post-MI involves the dynamic differentiation of macrophages. A promising strategy to alleviate myocardial damage after MI is by modulating the inflammatory response and orchestrating the shift from pro-inflammatory (M1) to anti-inflammatory (M2) macrophages, aiming to achieve a reduced M1/M2 ratio. Nuanxinkang (NXK), a simplified herbal decoction, has demonstrated noteworthy cardioprotective, inflammation-regulating, and myocardial energy metabolism-regulating properties. METHODS: In this study, we constructed an MI model by ligating coronary arteries to investigate the efficacy of NXK in improving ventricular remodeling and cardiac function. Mice were administered NXK (1.65 g/kg/d) or an equivalent volume of regular saline via gavage for 28 consecutive days, commencing the day after surgery. Then, we conducted echocardiography to assess the cardiac function, Masson staining to illustrate the extent of myocardial fibrosis, TUNEL staining to reveal myocardial apoptosis, and flow cytometry to analyze the polarization of M1 and M2 macrophages in the hearts. Besides, a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced pro-inflammatory macrophage (M1) polarization model was implemented in RAW264.7 cells to elucidate the underlying mechanism of NXK in regulating macrophage polarization. RAW264.7 cells were pre-treated with or without NXK-containing serum. Oxidative stress was detected by MitoSox staining, followed by Seahorse energy metabolism assay to evaluate alterations in mitochondrial metabolic patterns and ATP production. Both In vivo and in vitro, HIF-1α and PDK1 were detected by fluorescent quantitative PCR and Western blotting. RESULTS: In vivo, MI mice exhibited a decline in cardiac function, adverse ventricular remodeling, and an increase in glycolysis, coupled with M1-dominant polarization mediated by the HIF-1α/PDK1 axis. Notably, robust responses were evident with high-dose NXK treatment (1.65 g/kg/day), leading to a significant enhancement in cardiac function, inhibition of cardiac remodeling, and partial suppression of macrophage glycolysis and the inflammatory phenotype in MI mice. This effect was achieved through the modulation of the HIF-1α/PDK1 axis. In vitro, elevated levels of mitochondrial ROS production and glycolysis were observed in LPS-induced macrophages. Conversely, treatment with NXK notably reduced the oxidative stress damage induced by LPS and enhanced oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Furthermore, NXK demonstrated the ability to modify the energy metabolism and inflammatory characteristics of macrophages by modulating the HIF-1α/PDK1 axis. The influence of NXK on this axis was partially counteracted by the HIF-1α agonist DMOG. And NXK downregulated PDK1 expression, curtailed glycolysis, and reversed LPS-induced M1 polarization in macrophages, similar to the PDK1 inhibitor DCA. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, NXK protects against MI-induced cardiac remodeling by inducing metabolic reprogramming and phenotypic differentiation of macrophages, achieved through the modulation of the HIF-1α/PDK1 axis. This provides a novel and promising strategy for the treatment of MI.

Acute pancreatitis frequently causes intestinal barrier damage, which aggravates pancreatitis. Although Clostridium butyricum exerts anti-inflammatory and protective effects on the intestinal barrier during acute pancreatitis, the underlying mechanism is unclear. The G protein-coupled receptors 109 A (GPR109A) and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/ peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC-1α) signaling pathways can potentially influence the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Our study generated acute pancreatitis mouse models via intraperitoneal injection of cerulein and lipopolysaccharides. After intervention with Clostridium butyricum, the model mice showed reduced small intestinal and colonic intestinal barrier damage, dysbiosis amelioration, and increased GPR109A/AMPK/PGC-1α expression. In conclusion, Clostridium butyricum could improve pancreatic and intestinal inflammation and pancreatic injury, and relieve acute pancreatitis-induced intestinal barrier damage in the small intestine and colon, which may be associated with GPR109A/AMPK/PGC-1α.

Quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) van der Waals crystal fibrous red phosphorus (RP) exhibits pronounced in-plane optical anisotropy, positioning it as a potential candidate for polarization-related micro-nano devices. Unfortunately, a comprehensive investigation into the complex refractive index of fibrous RP and the structure-activity relationship connecting the distinctive quasi-1D structure with optical anisotropy is currently deficient. Herein, we have collectively determined the complex refractive index of the fibrous RP flakes within the ab-plane through Kramers-Kronig (KK) analysis and theoretical calculation. Notably, the maximum birefringence of fibrous RP reaches 0.642@475 nm with an absolute extinction coefficient of only 0.08, superior to the reported traditional optical crystals and the emerging low-dimensional materials as well. The remarkable birefringence can be attributed to the synergistic influence of the large electronic dipole polarizability, anisotropic electron density distribution and the distortion of stereochemically active lone pair (SCALP). This work demonstrates the potential of fibrous RP for polarization-sensitive devices, illuminating possibilities to exploit novel giant birefringent crystals based on the structure-activity relationship.

Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) are a growing class of new psychoactive substances (NPS) commonly derived from an N-alkylated indole, indazole, or 7-azaindole scaffold. Diversification of this core (at the 3-position) with amide-linked pendant amino acid groups and modular N-alkylation (of the indole/indazole/7-azaindole core) ensures that novel SCRAs continue to enter the illicit drug market rapidly. In response to the large number of SCRAs that have been detected, pharmacological evaluation of this NPS class has become increasingly common. Adamantane-derived SCRAs have consistently appeared throughout the market since 2011, and as such, a systematic set of these derivatives was synthesized and pharmacologically evaluated. Deuterated and fluorinated adamantane derivatives were prepared to evaluate typical hydrogen bioisosteres, as well as evaluation of the newly detected AFUBIATA.
