RESUMO

Effective management of pediatric craniofacial tumors requires coordinated input from medical, oncologic, and surgical specialties. Reconstructive algorithms must consider limitations in pediatric donor tissue and account for future growth and development. Immediate reconstruction is often focused on filling dead space, protecting underlying structures, and ensuring skeletal symmetry. Staged reconstruction occurs after the patient has reached skeletal maturity and is focused on restoring permanent dentition. Reconstructive options vary depending on the location, size, and composition of resected tissue. Virtual surgical planning (VSP) reduces the complexity of pediatric craniofacial reconstruction and ensures more predictable outcomes.

RESUMO

Diabetic patients can sustain wounds either as a sequelae of their disease process or postoperatively. Wound healing is a complex process that proceeds through phases of inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Diabetes results in several pathological changes that impair almost all of these healing processes. Diabetic wounds are often characterized by excessive inflammation and reduced angiogenesis. Due to these changes, diabetic patients are at a higher risk for postoperative wound healing complications. There is significant evidence in the literature that diabetic patients are at a higher risk for increased wound infections, wound dehiscence, and pathological scarring. Factors such as nutritional status and glycemic control also significantly influence diabetic wound outcomes. There are a variety of treatments available for addressing diabetic wounds.

RESUMO

Revision rhinoplasty presents several complex surgical challenges. Proper patient selection for revision rhinoplasty, along with thorough preoperative examination and surgical planning, is key to achieving ideal outcomes. Along with achieving a high level of understanding of primary rhinoplasty techniques, surgeons performing revision rhinoplasty must understand and diagnose deformities created by the primary surgery. A systematic approach to diagnosing rhinoplasty deformities assists in forming a suitable surgical plan. A classification system based on nasal analysis, described here, may be used to differentiate the degree of difficulty of the surgery as well as assist in surgical planning. Surgeons have a multitude of options available in their armamentarium for addressing common nasal deformities encountered during revisional surgery, and a stepwise surgical approach may facilitate the creation of an optimal aesthetic and functional result.

RESUMO

Sulfur mustard has been used as a chemical warfare agent for the past century. After its introduction by the Germans in World War I, investigators quickly began studying its impact on the human body including its deleterious effects on skin. This review focuses on two groups in particular who conducted experiments from 1917 to 1918: the United States Army at the American University Experiment Station Laboratories and Torald Sollmann at Western Reserve University. Through this work, these researchers proved far ahead of their time by anticipating dermatologic phenomena not described in the literature until later in the twentieth century. These include regional variation of percutaneous penetration, effect of vehicle on penetration and predicting immunologic contact urticaria. The work conducted by these researchers set the groundwork for much of twentieth century dermatotoxicology.
