RESUMO

Many regions have formed subsidence lakes due to underground mining in the world. However, seasonal variations of lacustrine groundwater discharge (LGD) rate and solute fluxes in the coal mining subsidence were rarely reported. In this study, we conducted four seasonal samplings in a coal mining subsidence, during which samples for stable water (δ18O) and radioactive (222Rn) isotopes were collected to quantify the seasonal dynamics of LGD rates. The LGD rates estimated from the 222Rn mass balance model were 10.2 ± 8.7, 5.5 ± 3.2, 11.5 ± 7.8, and 7.8 ± 4.5 mm d-1 in summer, autumn, winter and spring, respectively. According to the 18O mass balance model, the corresponding LGD rates were 15.1, 7.3, 15.6, and 11.3 mm d-1 in summer, autumn, winter and spring, respectively. We found a significant correlation between precipitation and LGD rates, suggesting precipitation was recognized as the main control factor for seasonal variations of LGD rates. Based on this correlation, the extrapolated LGD rates over a year ranged from 3.1 to 12.7 mm d-1 with an average of 8.8 mm d-1. Moreover, the fluxes of dissolved silicon (DSi), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) from LGD in autumn were (1.6 ± 0.9) × 105, (1.9 ± 1.1) × 104, and (1.1 ± 0.6) × 104 mol a-1, respectively. Correspondingly, in winter they were (3.5 ± 2.4) × 105, (4.1 ± 2.8) × 103, and (2.8 ± 1.9) × 103 mol a-1, respectively. This study demonstrated significantly seasonal variations of LGD, with precipitation being the main control factor of LGD in the coal mining subsidence lake. The fluxes of dissolved substance (DSi, Fe, Mn) from LGD need to be emphasized because they may have important impacts on the ecological stability in coal mining subsidence lakes.

RESUMO

Coal and grain complex areas influence the geochemical characterization of REEs through coal mining activities and agricultural production. However, there is a lack of relevant studies. In this study, we investigated the geochemical characterization and risk assessment of REEs in river sediments of the northern Anhui plain, a typical coal-grain composite area. The results showed that the average concentrations of ∑REE in the sediments ranged from 134.7 to 220.3 µg/g, and LREE was significantly enriched. Among the 14 REEs, Gd and Eu were the most enriched, with enrichment factors of 1.792 and 1.764, respectively. In addition, the differences in REEs content and enrichment between different rivers were related to the location of coal mines and the degree of population concentration. The average values of δCe and δEu in the sediments were 0.990 and 1.080, respectively, and most of the sampling sites showed a weak positive Ce, Eu anomaly. The results of Pearson's correlation and RDA redundancy analyses showed that Fe, Al, Mn and sand contributed more to the enrichment of REEs. The river sediments in the whole area had a slight potential ecological risk, with Eu (Er=13.05) and Lu (Er=14.07) having the highest potential risk. The ADD results also showed that the average daily dose of REEs by children was around 2.000 (µg/(kg·day)), which was significantly higher than that of adults. The results of this study can be used as a basis for the prevention and control of REEs in rivers in northern Anhui Province.

RESUMO

Mining activities cause surface subsidence and the formation of subsidence lakes, which dynamically change with the continuous coal mining activities. Under the combined influence of various human activities such as agriculture, aquaculture, and floating photovoltaic (FPV), the lake environment undergoes continuous changes, thereby altering the geochemical characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs) in the sediment. This study focused on the subsidence lakes in the Huainan coalfield in eastern China to examine the REEs content in the sediment, elucidated the temporal variations and geochemical characteristics of REEs distribution, explored the main controlling factors of REEs in the sediment, and revealed the migration and transformation behavior of REEs during dynamic subsidence processes. The study revealed that the migration pattern of REEs in the sediment was closely related to the duration of subsidence. The average content of REEs in lake sediments with subsidence duration <5 years increased from 219 µg·g-1 to 248 µg·g-1 compared to the soil, showing an enrichment model primarily driven by rainwater runoff, groundwater input retention, and mineral dissolution. With further subsidence, the processes of reduction dissolution of Fe-Mn oxides/hydroxides, organic colloid adsorption, and hydraulic disturbance gradually replaced the aforementioned enrichment behavior as the main migration pathways, resulting in a decrease in the average REEs content in the sediment to 179 µg·g-1 for subsidence durations exceeding 10 years. There was no strong correlation between REEs fractionation and subsidence duration. Artificial activities, such as FPV, are important factors causing Cerium and Erbium anomalies in some subsidence lake sediments. This study was not only of significant importance for understanding the migration, distribution, and environmental behavior of pollutants in aquatic environments under the interference of human activities but also provided a solid theoretical foundation for the future management of coal mining subsidence lakes.

RESUMO

East China is a highly aggregated coal-grain composite area where coal mining and agricultural production activities are both flourishing. At present, the geochemical characteristics of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in groundwater in coal mining areas are still unclear. This study combined hydrochemical and carbon isotope methods to explore the sources and factors influencing DIC in the groundwater of different active areas in coal mining areas. Moreover, the 13C isotope method was used to calculate the contribution rates of various sources to DIC in groundwater. The results showed that the hydrochemical types of groundwater were HCO3-Ca·Na and HCO3-Na. The main water‒rock interactions were silicate and carbonate rock weathering. Agricultural areas were mainly affected by the participation of HNO3 produced by chemical fertilizer in the weathering of carbonate rocks. Soil CO2 and carbonate rock weathering were the major sources of DIC in the groundwater. Groundwater in residential areas was primarily affected by CO2 from the degradation of organic matter from anthropogenic inputs. Sulfate produced by gypsum dissolution, coal gangue accumulation leaching and mine drainage participated in carbonate weathering under acidic conditions, which was an important factor controlling the DIC and isotopic composition of groundwater in coal production areas. The contribution rates of groundwater carbonate weathering to groundwater DIC in agricultural areas and coal production areas ranged from 57.46 to 66.18% and from 54.29 to 62.16%, respectively. In residential areas, the contribution rates of soil CO2 to groundwater DIC ranged from 51.48 to 61.84%. The results will help clarify the sources and circulation of DIC in groundwater under the influence of anthropogenic activities and provide a theoretical reference for water resource management.

RESUMO

This study explores the mechanism underlying WIF1 promoter methylation and its relationship with the pathogenesis of endometrial carcinoma. WIF1 promoter methylation was detected using methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP). WIF1 expression was examined through qRT-PCR and western blotting. Furthermore, 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-Aza) was used to demethylate the WIF1 promoter. The roles of WIF1 were investigated using in vitro loss- and gain-of-function assays. Xenograft models were used to analyze WIF1 expression and downstream genes, and results were confirmed using immunofluorescence and western blotting. WIF1 promoter methylation in endometrial cancer cells was significantly higher than that in normal cells, but the WIF1 mRNA and protein levels were reduced. The expression of WIF1 increased significantly after 5-Aza treatment (p < .05). Thus, 5-Aza treatment can inhibit the proliferation of endometrial cancer cells and induce apoptosis, while knockdown of WIF1 significantly inhibits the effects of 5-Aza. 5-Aza treatment can also inhibit Wnt pathway genes, including phosphorylation of ß-catenin protein, c-Myc, and CyclinD1, inhibit downstream functional genes, and activate the tumor suppressor gene APC, which can be blocked by WIF1 knockdown in endometrial carcinoma cells. Finally, 5-Aza inhibited the proliferation of subcutaneous tumor-bearing nude mice with endometrial cancer cells, but the effect was weaker than that of WIF1 overexpression. Our research shows that WIF1 promoter hypermethylation may promote the progression of endometrial cancer by downregulating WIF1 expression, activating the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, and promoting proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. WIF1 may be a potential biological target for gene therapy and drug development for the treatment of endometrial cancer.

RESUMO

Coal mining has produced a large amount of coal gangue. It makes the soil around the mining area seriously polluted by heavy metals, affects the growth of crops, and endangers human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new materials for remediation of Cd in soil. In this study, mercaptosilane-modified sepiolite (Q-Sep) was used as a basic passivator, and it was pretreated with acid (H-Q-Sep) and high temperature (R-Q-Sep) respectively. By analyzing the forms of Cd and pH values in soil after adding modified sepiolite, we compared the remediation effects of two modified methods on Cd in soil. The enrichment of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L) to Cd and changes in physiological and biochemical indexes of spinach were determined, and the effect of modified sepiolite on the growth of spinach was judged. The experimental results showed that the addition of modified sepiolite could significantly increase the soil pH values (p < 0.05); the content of exchangeable Cd in soil decreased by 60.4%; and the maximum increase of residual state was 32.9%. The absorption of Cd in soil by spinach decreased, and root length, plant height, and biomass of spinach all increased. It was proved that the addition of modified sepiolite can improve the productivity of soil, reduce toxicity of heavy metals in soil, and promote growth of plants. As a result, the addition of H-Q-Sep and R-Q-Sep can effectively repair Cd in gangue filled soil, which provides a certain theoretical basis for the passivation remediation of Cd in soil.

RESUMO

Many subsidence lakes have formed in eastern China as a result of underground coal mining. These coal mining-related subsidence lakes vary in their formation time and connectivity with rivers. These factors may influence the water chemistry and hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope characteristics of the lake water. This study collected and tested subsidence lake water, atmospheric precipitation, river water, and shallow groundwater in the study area. The results showed that the water chemical types of the subsidence lake water and river water are Cl-Na and HCO3·Cl-Na and that the water chemical types of the shallow groundwater are mainly HCO3·Cl-Na and HCO3·Cl-Ca. There are no significant differences in the water chemical characteristics of subsidence lakes with different subsidence ages and types. The major ions in each water body mainly come from evaporite dissolution and silicate weathering, and ion exchange occurs. Reverse ion exchange occurs in some shallow groundwater samples. The stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in the subsidence lake water, river water, and shallow groundwater are distributed along a straight line with a slope less than that of the LMWL, indicating that these water bodies have a common source, namely, precipitation. With increases in the formation time of the subsidence lakes, the heavy isotopes in the lake water gradually become depleted, and the d value gradually increases, mainly driven by precipitation dilution, weakening evaporation, river recharge, and groundwater recharge. The isotopic values of different types of lakes with the same subsidence time differ little. The research results may provide scientific guidance for the rational development and utilization of water resources in coal mining subsidence areas, enrich the study of the hydrological cycle in the area, and are of great significance for the protection of the local water balance and water environment.

RESUMO

The rapid increase in urbanization and intensive coal mining activities have accelerated the deterioration of surface water quality. Environmental problems caused by the accumulation of nitrate and sulfate from natural, urban, and agricultural sources have attracted extensive attention. Information on nitrate and sulfate sources and their transformations is crucial for understanding the nitrogen and sulfur cycles in surface water. In this study, we monitored nitrate and sulfate in three representative rivers in mining cities in northern China. The main pollution sources and biogeochemical processes were identified by using stable isotopes (δD, δ18OH2O, δ15N, δ18ONO3, δ34S and δ18OSO4) and hydrochemistry. The contribution of natural and anthropogenic sources was quantitatively estimated based on a Bayesian mixed model. The results indicated a large variation in sulfate and nitrate sources between the different rivers. Nitrate in the Tuohe River mainly derived from manure/sewage (57.9%) and soil N (26.9%), while sulfate mainly derived from manure/sewage (41.7%) and evaporite dissolution (26.8%). For the Suihe River, nitrate was primarily sourced from chemical fertilizer (37.9%) and soil nitrogen (34.8%), while sulfate was mainly sourced from manure/sewage (33.1%) and chemical fertilizer (21.4%). For the Huihe River, nitrate mainly derived from mine drainage (56.6%) and manure/sewage (30.6%), while sulfate predominantly originated from mine drainage (58.3%) and evaporite dissolution (12.9%). Microbial nitrification was the major pathway for the migration and transformation of nitrate in the surface water. However, denitrification and bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) did not play a significant role as aerobic conditions prevailed. In this study, we elucidated the sources and transformation mechanisms of nitrate and sulfate. Additionally, we provided a reference for formulating a comprehensive strategy for effective management and remediation of surface water contaminated with nitrate and sulfate in mining cities.

RESUMO

A ZnCl2-modified biochar-supported nanoscale iron sulfide composite (FeS-ZnBC) was successfully prepared to address the easy oxidization of FeS and enhance Cr(VI) removal from water. The material was characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, and XPS. The effects of FeS:ZnBC mass ratio, FeS-ZnBC dosage, solution pH, initial Cr(VI) concentration, and reaction time on the adsorption performance were investigated. The results revealed that the optimum adsorption capacity of FeS-ZnBC (FeS:ZnBC = 1:2) for Cr(VI) was 264.03 mg/g at 298 K (pH = 2). A Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to optimize the input variables that affected the adsorption of Cr(VI) solution. The results revealed that the highest removal (99.52%) of Cr(VI) solution was achieved with a Cr(VI) initial concentration of 150.59 mg/L, FeS-ZnBC adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L, and solution pH of 2. The sorption kinetics could be interpreted using a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isotherms were simulated using the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model, indicating that Cr(VI) removal by the FeS-ZnBC composites was a hybrid chemical reaction-sorption process. The main mechanisms of Cr(VI) removal by FeS-ZnBC were adsorption, chemical reduction, and complexation. This study demonstrated that FeS-ZnBC has potential application prospects in Cr(VI) removal.

RESUMO

Mining activities cause surface sulfate enrichment, which has negative impacts on human health and ecosystems. These high concentrations of sulfate may enter groundwater through the unsaturated zone (UZ), threatening groundwater quality. Therefore, we combined hydrochemical and dual isotopic analyses of sulfate in surface water, soil water and groundwater with evaluations of the UZ to identify the groundwater sulfate source and transformation in the coal mining area. Soil profile samples were collected near gangue heaps (UZ-1, UZ-2) and the mean sulfate concentrations of the UZ-1 profile and UZ-2 profile were 35.4 mg/L and 69.63 mg/L, respectively. The shallow groundwater sulfate was mainly from dissolution of evaporite, sulfide oxidation and sewage. Different sulfate contaminated areas showed different characteristics of sulfate sources. The sulfate source to groundwater near the coal gangue heaps was sulfide oxidation. The groundwater sulfate near the gangue heaps and industrial park compound contamination area was mainly derived from industrial and domestic sewage and sulfide oxidation. In addition, the role of bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) in the groundwater was not obvious. This research result is of great significance for promoting the safe mining of coal resources and sustainable utilization of groundwater in the Huaibei coal mining area and other coal mining areas in China.

RESUMO

Coal mining cities are universally confronted with the degradation of groundwater quality, and the sulfate pollution of groundwater has become a widely studied environmental problem. In this study, we combined multi-isotope (δ34S, δ18O-SO42- and 87Sr/86Sr) approach with hydrochemical technique and a Bayesian mixed model to clarify sources and transformations and to quantitatively assess the contribution of sulfate from potential sources. The concentrations of SO42- in groundwater ranged from 7.7 mg/L to 172.9 mg/L, and the high-value areas were located in coal mining area and residential area. The total values of δ34S and δ18O-SO42- varied from 10.6‰ to 26.9‰ and 6.9‰ to 14.1‰, respectively, in the groundwater. Analyses of SO42- and Sr isotopes and water chemistry indicated that SO42- in groundwater originated from various sources, such as atmospheric precipitation, sulfide mineral oxidation, evaporite dissolution, sewage and mine drainage. The oxidation of pyrite and bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) had no significant impact on the stable isotopes of groundwater. At the same time, the calculation results of the Bayesian mixed model showed that the sources of SO42- in groundwater mainly include evaporite dissolution in aquifer and mine drainage in the mixture of shallow and deep groundwater, with high contribution proportions of 39.8 ± 10.9% and 31.9 ± 5.7%, respectively, while the contributions of sewage (13.9 ± 8.5%), atmospheric precipitation (9.6 ± 8.6%) and the oxidation of sulfide (4.7 ± 3.3%) to SO42- were lower. The research results revealed the source of SO42- pollution in shallow groundwater in the coal mine area and provided an important scientific basis for the effective management and protection of groundwater resources.

RESUMO

As tracers, rare earth elements (REEs) can reflect the influence of human activities on the environmental changes in aquatic systems. To reveal the geochemical behavior of REEs in a water-sediment system influenced by human activities, the contents of REEs in the surface water and sediment in the Chaohu Lake Basin were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results show that the ΣREE contents in the surface water are 0.10-0.850 µg L-1, the ΣREE contents in the sediments are 71.14-210.01 µg g-1, and the average contents are 0.24 µg L-1 and 126.72 µg g-1, respectively. Almost all water and sediment samples have obvious light REE (LREE) enrichment, which is the result of the input of LREE-rich substances released by natural processes and human activities (industrial and agricultural production). Under the alkaline water quality conditions of Chaohu Lake, REEs (especially LREEs) are easily removed from water by adsorption/coprecipitation reactions with suspended colloidal particles, which leads to the enrichment of LREEs in sediments. The Ce anomaly of the water-sediment system is related to the oxidation environment, while the Eu anomaly is related to the plagioclase crystallization. Significant Gd anomalies was observed in the downstream of rivers flowing through urban areas, which was related to the anthropogenic Gd wastewater discharged by hospitals. The ∑REE-δEu and provenance index (PI) discrimination results are consistent, indicating that the sediments in Chaohu Lake mainly come from rivers flowing through the southwest farmland. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of REEs shows that these tributaries are significantly affected by agricultural activities. The distribution and accumulation of REEs in Chaohu Lake are the result of the interaction of natural and human processes. The results can provide a scientific reference for the distribution and environmental behavior of REEs in aquatic environments disturbed by human beings.

RESUMO

In this study, the surface of vermiculite-montmorillonite was modified by MnO2 loading. The modified vermiculite-montmorillonite was added to remediate the potentially toxic trace element (PTE) Hg present in soil containing coal gangue. Pot experiments were conducted to analyze and compare the pH values, Hg contents and Hg species present in coal gangue-containing soil, with and without the modified materials added, to determine whether the addition of modified materials had an effect on the growth of Brassica chinensis L. Results showed that with the addition of 35 g·kg-1 modified vermiculite-montmorillonite, the pH of soil increased by a value of 0.79, compared with that in the control group. When 15 g·kg-1 was added, the concentration of Hg in soil decreased by 98.2%. The addition of modified materials promoted the transformation of Hg in soil from a bioavailable form to an unavailable form; that is, the content of the residual form increased. The plant height and biomass of Brassica chinensis L. also increased, which indicated that the addition of modifiers can increase soil productivity, reduce the effects of PTEs on organisms in soil, and promote plant growth. Therefore, the addition of modified vermiculite-montmorillonite can achieve remediation of coal gangue-containing soil.

RESUMO

The input of pollutants caused by human activities induces the deterioration of surface water quality. To reveal the characteristics of surface water quality in Chaohu Lake Basin and the influence of human activities, the hydrochemistry and stable isotope composition of hydrogen and oxygen in lake water and inflow river water were analyzed. The results show that the hydrochemical type of lake water is the Na-Cl type, while river water is the Na-Cl, Ca-Cl and mixed types. The ion proportional coefficient method and principal component analysis show that surface water is controlled by weathering of evaporated salt rocks and silicate rocks, in which Cl- and SO42- are affected by fertilizers and sewage to some extent. There is a strong correlation between conventional ions and nutrient indexes, which indicates that dissolved ions are affected not only by rock weathering but also by human activities (such as the discharge of domestic sewage or nitrogen-containing wastewater and the use of fertilizers). The stable isotope values of hydrogen and oxygen in surface water are distributed at the lower right portion of the local precipitation line and are close to it, indicating that surface water mainly originates from precipitation. The high value of d-excess values in surface water indicates that evaporation is weak. As pollution indicators, EC, Cl- and NO3- indicates that the Nanfei River, Dianbu River, Shiwuli River and Pai River flow in northwestern of Chaohu Lake Basin through Hefei urban city are severely polluted, NO3- originates from manure and sewage. Rivers flowing through farmland areas are less polluted, and the use of agricultural fertilizer contributes greatly to NO3-.

RESUMO

This study investigated the environmental geochemical characteristics of rare-earth elements (REEs) in surface waters in the Huainan mining area, Anhui Province, China. The REEs concentrations were determined by ICP-MS, and the inorganic species of dissolved REEs in the river and coal mining subsidence area water samples were calculated by using the Visual MINTEQ (version 3.1) code. On this basis, the distribution and geochemical characteristics of REEs in the surface waters were systematically analyzed, and the main inorganic species of REEs were investigated. The results showed the following: (1) The REEs concentrations in the surface waters were relatively low, ranging from 0.1361 to 0.3536 µg/L, and the average ∑REEs concentration was 0.2062 µg/L. Compared with light rare-earth elements (LREEs), heavy rare-earth elements (HREEs) were significantly enriched, with an average enrichment factor of 1.4642. Due to the interaction of high pH values and high cation concentrations, the ∑REEs content in the subsidence area water was significantly lower than that in the river water. (2) The distribution pattern of REEs in the surface waters normalized against the North American Shale Composite (NASC) showed that the REEs in the study area had different degrees of cerium (Ce) and europium (Eu) anomalies. The negative Ce anomalies were probably closely related to the pH conditions, whereas the positive Eu anomalies were mainly attributed to preferential chemical weathering and the dissolution of feldspar minerals. (3) The simulation results obtained by using Visual MINTEQ code showed that the dominant and typically inorganic complex form of REEs in the surface waters was carbonate complexes, and this form was one of the reasons for the enrichment of HREEs in the surface water.

RESUMO

Mining activities exert a far-reaching impact on the quality of groundwater, and health problems caused by heavy metal pollution have attracted global attention. In this study, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was employed to determine the contents of 8 heavy metals (Cd, Cr, As, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Pb) in shallow groundwater samples retrieved from a mining area in northern Anhui. Multivariate statistical methods were adopted to analyze the distribution and source of pollution and to evaluate 5% and 95% health risks based on Monte Carlo simulation. Fe, As and Cr significantly exceeded the safe drinking water standards of the World Health Organization (WHO). The average concentrations of As and Cr were as high as 46.45 µg/L and 133.96 µg/L, respectively. The correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) results revealed that heavy metals are affected by complex factors, the main factor being human activities. The total carcinogenic health risks of Cr and As in adults were 2.49 × 10-3 and 3.43 × 10-4, respectively, which exceeded the maximum acceptable risk value (1 ×10-4) recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), affecting human health. According to the USEPA classification of hazardous ingestion (HI), at HI < 1, the impact of non-carcinogenic heavy metals on human health is negligible. These results indicate that local residents should strengthen the monitoring of Cr and As pollution in shallow groundwater.

RESUMO

The increase in NO3- content in surface water caused by intensive mining activities in Huainan City, China, has attracted considerable attention owing to the deterioration of water quality and the degradation of ecosystems in recent years. The Huainan mining area, which is highly disturbed by anthropogenic activities, was selected as a typical observation area, and the surface water was classified as open subsidence water (OSW), closed subsidence water (CSW), and river water (RW). Moreover, the hydrochemical parameters and the δ15N and δ18O values of nitrate were employed to quantitatively trace the sources and biochemical transformation of NO3-, and the contribution ratios of different NO3- sources were estimated using the stable isotope analysis in R based on the Bayesian model. There was evident nitrification in the study area, but no significant denitrification has occurred. A substantial portion of δ15N-NO3- demonstrated complex sources of NO3-. Compared with those of CSW, the NO3- compositions of the OSW approached to those of the RW due to river recharge and discharge, and were greatly affected by anthropogenic activities. The proportional contribution of manure and sewage in the OSW was found to be the highest with a mean value of 39.5 % ± 12.3 %, which was followed by that of mine drainage (mean: 22.1 % ± 13.1 %), chemical fertilizer (mean: 17.5 % ± 10.6 %), and soil organic nitrogen (mean: 17.5 % ± 11.6 %). In the RW, the highest mean contribution of manure sewage was 35.2 % ± 9.7 %, which was followed by that of chemical fertilizer (mean: 29.3 % ± 7.2 %), mine drainage (mean: 23.4 % ± 13.0 %), and soil organic nitrogen (mean: 10.9 % ± 8.3 %). In contrast, the contribution of chemical fertilizer to the CSW was the highest with a mean value of 33.9 % ± 13.6 %, which was followed by that of soil organic nitrogen (mean: 26.5 % ± 13.8 %), mine drainage (mean: 18.1 % ± 11.6 %). Therefore, NO3- in the surface water of the mining area primarily originates from chemical fertilizers and manure sewage. In addition, the contribution of mine drainage to nitrate in the study area indicates the potential impact of mining activities on surface water. These findings highlight the value of classifying different types of surface water in tracing NO3- contamination sources, and provide relevant theoretical basis for tracing nitrate sources in other areas.

RESUMO

The increasing salinization of groundwater renders it challenging to maintain the water quality. Moreover, knowledge regarding the characteristics and mechanism of groundwater salinization in mining areas remains limited. This study represents the first attempt of combining the hydrochemical, isotope (δD, δ18O, δ37Cl, and 87Sr/86Sr) and multivariate statistical analysis methods to explore the origin, control, and influence of fluoride enrichment in mining cities. The TDS content of groundwater ranged from 275.9 mg/L to 2452.0 mg/L, and 54% of the groundwater samples were classified as class IV water according to China's groundwater quality standards (GB/T 14848-2017), indicating a decline in the water quality of the study area. The results of the groundwater ion ratio and isotope discrimination analysis showed that dissolution and evaporation involving water-rock interactions and halite were the main driving processes for groundwater salinization in the study area. In addition to the hydrogeological and climatic conditions, mine drainage inputs exacerbated the increasing salinity of the groundwater in local areas. The mineral dissolution, cation exchange, and evaporation promoted the F- enrichment, while excessive evaporation and salinity inhibited the F- enrichment. Gangue accumulation and infiltration likely led to considerable F- enrichment in individual groundwater regions. Extensive changes in the groundwater salinity indicated differences in the geochemical processes that controlled the groundwater salinization. Given the particularity of the study area, the enrichment of salinization and fluoride triggered by mining activities cannot be ignored.

RESUMO

Slag tailings are produced by "cooling-grinding-ball milling-flotation" and other processes of slag, while slag is produced by the flash smelting of the original ore. The utilization and environmental hazards of arsenic in slag tailings have become a focus of attention. This study on slag tailings reveals the presence of arsenic in copper smelting tailings from the mineralogy and leaching perspectives, and the noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of arsenic to the human body were assessed by using the USEPA health risk model. The surface particles of the slag tailings were unevenly dispersed, and the mineral crystals were relatively complete. A small amount of secondary minerals had grown on the mineral surface. Most of the fine particles adhered to the surface of the main mineral to form inclusions. The mineral composition of the slag tailings was dominated by maghemite (Fe3O4) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4), and the arsenic-bearing minerals were unevenly distributed, where As (Ⅴ) fine particles were embedded in maghemite, amorphous phase and fayalite. There was a large amount of residual arsenic in the slag tailing particles, and the leaching content of arsenic in the toxicity leaching procedure was always lower than the limit of 5 mg/L. The health risk to the exposed population was evaluated by the USEPA health risk model. Since the exposed population in the industrial land is mainly adults, it is determined that the tailings will not cause harm to children's health. In this evaluation, the exposure duration (length of service of the workers) of 30 years, exposure frequency of 314 d/y and body weight of 60 kg (average weight of the workers) were taken as the parameters of three exposure pathways: hand-oral ingestion, respiratory system inhalation and skin contact. Therefore, longer activity time of the workers in the tailing workshop corresponds to a higher HI (hazard index). Although the arsenic in the slag tailings had a certain degree of bioavailability, it was not sufficient to adversely affect human health.

RESUMO

The external nitrogen load input caused by human activities exacerbates the eutrophication process of aquatic ecosystems in mining areas, causing water quality problems. However, knowledge of the sources and environmental behavior of nitrate in the surface water of mining areas is still very limited. This study investigated the nitrate content and spatiotemporal variation characteristics of surface water in the Linhuan mining area, identified the sources and transformation processes of nitrate using isotopes and hydrochemistry, and evaluated the contribution rates of different potential nitrate sources based on a Bayesian mixing model. The nitrogen pollution in the surface water in the mining area seriously exceeded class Ⅴ of the Environmental Quality Standard of Surface Water of China (GB3838-2002). The NO3- content ranged from 0.87 to 3.41 mg/L, showing obvious seasonal and spatial differences. Isotope and NO3-/Cl- analysis indicated that nitrate in the subsidence area water (SAW) was mainly derived from chemical fertilizer (NF) and soil organic nitrogen (NS), while nitrate in the mainstream of the Huihe River water (HRW) was mainly derived from manure/sewage (MS). The nitrate in the tributary of the Baohe River water (BRW) was mainly derived from soil NS, and nitrification was a nitrogen conversion pathway in the soil. The results of the Bayesian mixing model showed that the main sources of nitrate in the BRW, HRW and SAW were NF (34.5%), MS (68.8%) and NF (40.8%) in the wet season, and NS (33.4%), MS (70.9%) and NF (58.1%) in the dry season, respectively. The results of this study provide a new integrated method for the identification of nitrate pollution sources in mining areas, and this method can be used to improve the biogeochemical information of nitrogen in the aquatic ecosystems of mining areas and help formulate relevant measures to reduce water nitrogen pollution.
