RESUMO

We demonstrate high power picosecond green and deep ultraviolet (DUV) lasers based on an all-fiberized master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA). The main power amplifier is fabricated with a highly Yb-doped large mode area (LMA) silicate glass fiber. It delivers 75.2-W laser output at 1029 nm with a pulse repetition rate of 10 MHz and a pulse duration of 70 ps. With a lithium triborate (LBO) crystal, a 43.0-W green output at 514.5 nm has been achieved with a pulse duration of 55 ps. With a caesium lithium borate (CLBO) crystal, a 14.5-W picosecond DUV output at 257 nm has been generated, which is the highest power for the all-fiber based DUV laser, to the best of our knowledge.

BACKGROUND: Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2, along with some chemokines, were found to be overexpressed in rosacea patients. Aryl hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) activation inhibited the inflammatory responses triggered by TLR activation. The current study was conducted to evaluate the underlying mechanisms of AhR activation in rosacea models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven-week-old female BALB/c mice received twice daily intradermal injections of LL-37 for 2 consecutive days. Thirty minutes after the second LL-37 injection, 1% or 0.5% AhR agonist benvitimod was administrated topically once per day for 3 consecutive days. HaCaT cells were treated with different concentrations of LL-37 and benvitimod, and were further infected with lentivirus to over-express TLR2. Expressions of TLR2, CCL5, CXCL9, CXCL10 and CXCL11 were evaluated using qRT-PCR, Western Blot or ELISA. RESULTS: AhR activation ameliorated LL-37-induced rosacea-like eruptions in mice by reductions in redness scores, redness areas and dermal inflammatory cell infiltrates. Elevated expressions of TLR2 and chemokines (CCL5, CXCL9, CXCL10 and CXCL11) following LL-37 treatment were decreased by AhR activation. In HaCaT cells receiving LL-37, TLR2 and the four chemokines were up-regulated, and levels of these chemokines were further enhanced after over-expressing TLR2. At 8 h after an administration of 10 µM benvitimod, gene expressions of TLR2 and the four chemokines in LL-37 treated HaCat cells were decreased, while their protein expressions were decreased for 24 h. CONCLUSION: AhR activation is beneficial in treating rosacea in a LL-37-induced rosacea mouse model and involves a suppression of the TLR signaling pathway in an HaCaT cell model of rosacea.

Metasurfaces are 2D artificial materials consisting of arrays of metamolecules, which are exquisitely designed to manipulate light in terms of amplitude, phase, and polarization state with spatial resolutions at the subwavelength scale. Traditional micro/nano-optical sensors (MNOSs) pursue high sensitivity through strongly localized optical fields based on diffractive and refractive optics, microcavities, and interferometers. Although detections of ultra-low concentrations of analytes have already been demonstrated, the label-free sensing and recognition of complex and unknown samples remain challenging, requiring multiple readouts from sensors, e.g., refractive index, absorption/emission spectrum, chirality, etc. Additionally, the reliability of detecting large, inhomogeneous biosamples may be compromised by the limited near-field sensing area from the localization of light. Here, we review recent advances in metasurface-based MNOSs and compare them with counterparts using micro-optics from aspects of physics, working principles, and applications. By virtue of underlying the physics and design flexibilities of metasurfaces, MNOSs have now been endowed with superb performances and advanced functionalities, leading toward highly integrated smart sensing platforms.

Rose-petal-like superhydrophobic surfaces with strong water adhesion are promising for microdroplet manipulation and lossless droplet transfer. Assembly of self-grown micropillars on shape-memory polymer sheets with their surface adhesion finely tunable was enabled using a picosecond laser microprocessing system in a simple, fast, and large-scale manner. The processing speed of the wettability-finely-tunable superhydrophobic surfaces is up to 0.5 cm2/min, around 50-100 times faster than the conventional lithography methods. By adjusting the micropillar height, diameter, and bending angle, as well as superhydrophobic chemical treatment, the contact angle and adhesive force of water droplets on the micropillar-textured surfaces can be tuned from 117.1° up to 165° and 15.4 up to 200.6 µN, respectively. Theoretical analysis suggests a well-defined wetting-state transition with respect to the micropillar size and provides a clear guideline for microstructure design for achieving a stabilized superhydrophobic region. Droplet handling devices, including liquid handling tweezers and gloves, were fabricated from the micropillar-textured surfaces, and lossless liquid transfer of various liquids among various surfaces was demonstrated using these devices. The superhydrophobic surfaces serve as a microreactor platform to perform and reveal the chemical reaction process under a space-constrained condition. The superhydrophobic surfaces with self-assembled micropillars promise great potential in the fields of lossless droplet transfer, biomedical detection, chemical engineering, and microfluidics.

A tunable narrow linewidth UV laser near 308 nm is necessary for highly sensitive hydroxyl (OH) radical measurement. We demonstrated a high-power fiber-based single frequency tunable pulsed UV laser at 308 nm. The UV output is generated from the sum frequency of a 515 nm fiber laser and a 768 nm fiber laser, which are harmonic generations from our proprietary high-peak-power silicate glass Yb- and Er-doped fiber amplifiers. A 3.50 W single frequency UV laser with 100.8 kHz pulse repetition rate, 3.6 ns pulse width, 34.7 µJ pulse energy, and 9.6 kW peak power has been achieved, which represents the first demonstration, to the best of our knowledge, of a high-power fiber-based 308 nm UV laser. With temperature control of the single frequency distributed feedback seed laser, the UV output is tunable for up to 792 GHz at 308 nm.

As an important method to effectively improve energy efficiency, the study of thermal energy storage is particularly important. In this study, six types of clay mineral-based form-stable phase-change materials (FSPCMs) were prepared by the vacuum adsorption method. The adsorption capacity of vermiculite and diatomite was satisfactory, and sepiolite showed the worst adsorption capacity. Clay minerals can delay the thermal decomposition rate of capric-palmitic acid (CA-PA), and the specific surface area and pore capacity of clay minerals all decrease dramatically after the clay minerals have absorbed CA-PA. FSPCMs exhibited a higher heat storage and release efficiency and reflects a certain temperature control performance. In addition, only physical adsorption between the CA-PA and the clay material occurred, and no chemical reaction occurred. Finally, FSPCMs still have high latent heat of phase transition, and they can be used for low-temperature thermal energy storage.

Both SIRT1 and UVA radiation are involved in cellular damage processes such as apoptosis, senescence and ageing. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to be closely related to UV radiation, as well as to SIRT1. In this study, we investigated the connections among SIRT1, UVA and miRNA in human skin primary fibroblasts. Our results showed that UVA altered the protein level of SIRT1 in a time point-dependent manner. Using miRNA microarray, bioinformatics analysis, we found that knocking down SIRT1 could cause up-regulation of miR-27a-5p and the latter could down-regulate SMAD2, and these results were verified by qRT-PCR or Western blot. Furthermore, UVA radiation (5 J/cm2 ), knocking down SIRT1 or overexpression of miR-27a-5p led to increased expression of MMP1, and decreased expressions of COL1 and BCL2. We also found additive impacts on MMP1, COL1 and BCL2 under the combination of UVA radiation + Sirtinol (SIRT1 inhibitor), or UVA radiation + miR-27a-5p mimic. SIRT1 activator resveratrol could reverse damage changes caused by UVA radiation. Besides, absent of SIRT1 or overexpression of miR-27a-5p increased cell apoptosis and induced cell arrest in G2/M phase. Taken together, these results demonstrated that UVA could influence a novel SIRT1-miR-27a-5p-SMAD2-MMP1/COL1/BCL2 axis in skin primary fibroblasts, and may provide potential therapeutic targets for UVA-induced skin damage.

Photodamages caused by UVA radiation induced oxidative injuries are closely related to photoaging and skin cancer. Paeoniflorin (PF), extracted from the root of Paeonia lactiflora, has been reported to be an effective antioxidant. PLIN2, known as adipose differentiation-related protein, has been previously involved in the regulation of oxidative stress. In this study, we were sought to investigate the photo-protective property of PF and PLIN2 in UVA-radiated human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). HDFs were pre-treated with PF (800 µM) followed by UVA radiation (22.5 J/cm2). MTS activity, cell apoptosis, ROS, MDA, and SOD were detected, respectively. The expressions of Nrf2, HO-1, NQ-O1, and PLIN2 were determined using RT-qPCR or western blot. Nrf2 was silenced by siRNA, and PLIN2 was overexpressed via lentiviral transduction. Comparing to the UVA radiation, PF pre-treatment could prominently increase the MTS activity, decrease cell apoptosis, reduce the generations of ROS and MDA, increase the activity of SOD and increase the expression of Nrf2 and its target genes HO-1 and NQ-O1. When Nrf2 was knocked down, PF lost above protective properties. In addition, UVA induced oxidative stress led to upregulation of PLIN2 and the latter could be decreased by PF. Overexpression of PLIN2 improved MTS activity and reduced MDA level in HDFs. The combination of PLIN2 overexpression and PF pre-treatment corporately inhibited UVA-induced injury. Besides, we also found that PF and PLIN2 had a compensatory protection against UVA induced oxidative stress. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that UVA induced photodamages could be inhibited by PF via Nrf2/HO-1/NQ-O1 signaling pathway or by PLIN2, and the combination of PLIN2 overexpression and PF played additive effects against UVA-related oxidative stress.

Paeoniflorin (PF) possesses multiple biological functions including anti-oxidization. PF is the major bioactive ingredient of total glycosides of paeony (TGP), which could promote re-pigmentation of vitiligo. The study was sought to investigate the effects and potential signaling pathways of PF on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress in melanocytes. The results showed that pretreatment with 50 µM PF significantly inhibited cell apoptosis, enhanced cell viability, and suppressed reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation by enhancing the productions of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT). Furthermore, PF activated c-Jun amino terminal kinase (JNK) and the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) pathway to counteract H2O2-induced oxidative damage in PIG1 and PIG3V. Taken together, our study firstly demonstrates that PF resists H2O2-induced oxidative stress in melanocytes probably by activating JNK/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling, suggesting a potential therapeutic application of PF on vitiligo.

Background: Large-scale retrospective studies of light/laser in treating nasal rosacea were lacking.Objective: The study was aimed to perform a decade retrospection of the patients with nasal rosacea who were treated with light/laser devices.Methods: A study between 2008 and 2017 was performed retrospectively. Categorization of rosacea type (erythema/telangiectasia, ET; papules/pustules, PP; rhinophyma, RP) was made according to the photographs. Device settings, treatment regimens and treatment sessions of light/laser facilities were summarized. Efficacy was evaluated using a grading scale.Results: In all, 807 patients received light/laser treatments. The subtypes of nasal rosacea were ET (n = 196), PP (n = 95), RP (n = 42), ET + PP (n = 334), ET + RP (n = 15), PP + RP (n = 88), and ET + PP + RP (n = 37). The lesions of ET or PP were mainly treated with noninvasive devices (Intense pulsed light, IPL; Dye pulse light, DPL; Dual wavelength laser system, DW) and those of RP were treated with the Fractional carbon dioxide (FCO2) laser. For the mixed subtypes, the general disposal orders of lesions were ET, PP, and later RP, and the fundamental orders of devices application were IPL, DPL, DW, and FCO2 laser. For all types of rosacea except for RP (2-4 sessions), most of the patients received 4-6 sessions of treatments. Of all subtypes of ET, PP, RP, ET + PP, ET + RP, PP + RP, and ET + PP + RP, the patients who achieved more than 50% improvement accounted for 74.5%, 58.3%, 83.3%, 69.2%, 73.3%, 61.4%, and 51.4%, respectively.Conclusion: The multiple, sequential light/laser devices can be safely used in nasal rosacea with various degrees efficacies based on different types.

The gain bandwidth of a single-mode fiber is limited by the atomic transitions of one rare earth gain element. Here we overcome this long-standing challenge by designing a new single-mode fiber with multi-section core, where each section is doped with different gain element. We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate that this configuration provides a gain bandwidth well beyond the capability of conventional design, whereas the inclusion of multiple sections does not compromise single-mode operation or the quality of the transverse modal profile. This new fiber will be beneficial in realizing all fiber laser systems with few-cycle pulse duration or octave tunability.

High-energy single-frequency optical pulses at 1572 nm were generated from an all-fiber MOPA system for atmospheric CO2 LIDAR system application. We report the experimental demonstration of 1.8 mJ, a peak power of 3.5 kW at the pulse repetition of 2.5 kHz, as well as 1.3 mJ, a peak power of 2.5 kW at the pulse repetition of 7.5 kHz single-frequency optical pulses at 1572 nm using single-mode large-core polarization-maintaining Er-Yb co-doped silicate glass fiber amplifiers pumped at 976 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest pulse energy of single frequency at 1572 nm from an all-fiber amplifier system.

The Advanced Solid State Lasers 2017 Conference (ASSL) was held from October 1 to 5, 2017. It was an extraordinary conference at the Nagoya Congress Center in Nagoya, Japan. ASSL 2017 again suggested an impressive platform where miscellaneous perceptions with a variety of approaches to optics, photonics, sensing, laser technology, laser systems, and solid state lasers were presented. This international meeting was highly selective, leading to high level contributions through one plenary conference, 17 invited presentations, 70 regular talks, and 121 posters. The present joint issue of Optics Express and Optical Materials Express features 27 articles written by ASSL 2017 authors and covering the spectrum of solid-state lasers from materials research to sources, and from design innovation to applications.

Background: Associations between vitiligo and thyroid disorders have been suggested, However, the prevalence of thyroid disorders in vitiligo vary widely. Purpose: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis assessing the prevalence of thyroid disorders in patients with vitiligo. Method: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), Chongqing VIP database, and Wanfang database from inception to August 2, 2018 were systematically searched. The pooled prevalence and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. Results: A total of 77 eligible studies were identified and included, published from 1968 to 2018. Six thyroid disorders including subclinical hyperthyroidism, overt hyperthyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism, overt hypothyroidism, Graves disease, and Hashimoto thyroiditis were described. The numbers of relative studies were 54 in overt hypothyroidism, 50 in overt hyperthyroidism, 25 in subclinical hypothyroidism, 19 in Hashimoto thyroiditis, 16 in Graves disease, and 10 in subclinical hyperthyroidism. The highest prevalence was 0.06 (95% CI: 0.04-0.07) in subclinical hypothyroidism, and the lowest was 0.01 in subclinical hyperthyroidism (95% CI: 0.00-0.01) or Graves disease (95% CI: 0.01-0.02). Conclusion: Six thyroid disorders showed various prevalence in vitiligo. The highest prevalence was in subclinical hypothyroidism, and the lowest was in subclinical hyperthyroidism or Graves disease. Screening vitiligo patients for thyroid disorders seem plausible, in an effort to detect potential thyroid diseases or to assess the risk of future onset.

Prolyl hydroxylase 3 (PHD3) is widely accepted as a tumor suppressor; however, the expression of PHD3 in various cancer types remains controversial. The present study aimed to investigate the association between PHD3 expression and the clinicopathological features of gastric cancer using reverse transcription­quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. The effects of PHD3 in gastric cancer cell lines were assessed using western blot analysis and transwell migration assays. The present results revealed that PHD3 expression was increased in adjacent non­cancerous tissue compared with in gastric cancer tissue, and PHD3 overexpression was correlated with the presence of well­differentiated cancer cells, early cancer stage classification and the absence of lymph node metastasis. In vitro experiments demonstrated that PHD3 may act as a negative regulator of hypoxia­inducible factor­1α and vascular endothelial growth factor, both of which participate in tumor angiogenesis. In conclusion, the present results suggested that PHD3 may act as a tumor suppressor in gastric cancer. Therefore, the targeted regulation of PHD3 may have potential as a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of patients with gastric cancer.

The editors introduce the focus issue on "Advanced Solid-State Lasers (ASSL) 2016", which is based on the topics presented at a conference of the same name held in Boston, USA, from October 30 to November 3, 2016. This focus issue, jointly prepared by Optics Express and Optical Materials Express, includes 20 contributed papers (14 for Optics Express and 6 for Optical Materials Express) selected from the voluntary submissions from attendees who presented at the conference and have extended their work into complete research articles. We hope this focus issue provides a useful link to the variety of topical discussions held at the conference and will contribute to the further expansion of the associated research areas.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a meta-analysis assessing the prevalence of vitiligo. METHODS: Literatures that reported prevalence rates of vitiligo were identified using EMBASE, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database and Weipu database for the period from inception to May 2016. We performed stratified analyses on possible sources of bias, including areas difference, years of publication, gender and age. Publication bias was assessed with Egger's test method. RESULTS: A total of 103 studies were eligible for inclusion. The pooled prevalence of vitiligo from 82 population- or community-based studies was 0.2% (95%CI: 0.1%-0.2%) and from 22 hospital-based studies was 1.8% (95%CI: 1.4%-2.1%). A relatively high prevalence of vitiligo was found in Africa area and in female patients. For population- or community-based studies, the prevalence has maintained at a low level in recent 20 years and it has increased with age gradually. For hospital-based studies, the prevalence has showed a decreased trend from 60s till now or from young to old. No significant publication bias existed in hospital-based studies (t = 0.47, P = 0.643), while a significant publication bias existed in population- or community-based studies (t = 2.31, P = 0.026). CONCLUSION: A relatively high prevalence of vitiligo was found in Africa area and in female patients. The prevalence has maintained at a low level in recent years. It showed an inverse trend with age increment in population- or community-based studies and hospital-based studies.

BACKGROUND: Numerous epidemiological studies have evaluated the association between the CDH1 -160C/A polymorphism and the risk of breast cancers. However, these studies have yielded conflicting results. To derive a more precise estimation of this association, this meta-analysis was conducted. METHODS: A comprehensive search using the keywords "CDH1," "E-Cadherin," "polymorphism," "SNP," and "variant" combined with "breast," "cancer," "tumor," or "carcinomas" was conducted. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were appropriately calculated using a fixed effect or random effect model. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2009 checklist was used for this meta-analysis. RESULTS: Four publications including five studies were identified. It was found that the CDH1 -160C/A polymorphism was significantly associated with breast cancer risk in the dominant model (CA + AA vs. CC: OR = 1.207, 95 % CI = 1.031-1.412, P = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis demonstrated that the -160C/A polymorphism in the CDH1 gene might contribute to breast cancer susceptibility. Further investigations using a much larger sample including different ethnicities are still needed to verify this association.
