RESUMO

Introduction: To report a case of accidental intralenticular Ozurdex injection in an eye with thicker lens. During the follow-up period of 15 months, the therapeutic effect of intralenticular Ozurdex was maintained. Case description: Ozurdex was accidently injected into the lens of an eye with uveitis, and the lens thickness was measured to be 5.70 mm. The uveitis was under good control, and no significant development of cataract was observed until 7 months after the intralenticular Ozurdex injection. Then due to the outbreak of COVID-19, follow-up was suspended. Fifteen months after the injection, the patient returned to the doctor. At this time, significant cataract development was observed, whereas uveitis was still under good control. Accordingly, cataract surgery and Ozurdex extraction were performed. Two months after surgery, a mild recurrence of uveitis occurred. Conclusions: A thicker lens might be an important risk factor for accidental intralenticular Ozurdex injections. However, after intralenticular Ozurdex injection, the development of cataract was slow, and Ozurdex could still have a therapeutic effect on uveitis in this case. Thus, immediate surgery might be unnecessary for certain accidental intralenticular Ozurdex injection cases, and a follow-up strategy could be chosen to maintain the effect of Ozurdex.

RESUMO

The international cereal trade can mitigate global water stress by saving virtual scarce water (VSW). Based on bilateral trade data, this study assessed VSW savings and losses in the international trade of three major cereals (i.e., wheat, maize, and rice) from 2008 to 2017 by incorporating the water stress index (WSI) into a virtual water assessment. We found that the trade in wheat and maize saved a significant amount of VSW, while the rice trade led to increasingly severe losses of VSW. This study identified the top trades of VSW savings and losses for each cereal. Wheat and maize were primarily exported from the countries that are relatively abundant in water resources (e.g., United States, Brazil, Argentina, Russia) to water-scarce countries (e.g., Mexico and Egypt), whereas rice was exported mainly from India and Pakistan, two of the most water-stressed countries. We suggest that policy makers consider VSW savings and losses when making cereal trading decisions to alleviate global water stress.

RESUMO

The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread globally, while the routes of transmission of this virus are still controversial. We enrolled 33 patients, without any ocular manifestation, with their ocular surface swabs collected for virus detection. RNA was detected strong positive in samples of both eyes from two patients. Therefore, SARS-CoV-2 may exist in the normal ocular surface of COVID-19 patients, suggesting that this virus might be spread through conjunctival contact.

RESUMO

5-Lipoxygenase (5-LOX) plays a key role in the pathway of leukotriene biosynthesis. To predict the inhibitory activity of flavonoid inhibitors against 5-LOX from Spatholobus suberectus Dunn, Autodock 4.2 and comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) were employed. For the positive inhibitors (n=7), the value of the coefficient of determination (R2) between the binding free energy, calculated using Autodock 4.2, and the experimental pIC50 is 0.838. In the training set (n=21) of inhibitors against 5-LOX, the R2 of non-cross-validated partial least squares analysis between the actual and predicted pIC50 values, using the no-validation with the optimum number of components set to 6, is 0.997 (p=0.000). For the model generated by CoMFA, the contribution of electrostatic and steric factors are 0.522 and 0.478, respectively. Among the flavonoids of S. suberectus, liquiritigenin, catechin, butin, 3',4',7-trihydroxyflavone, plathymenin, and gallocatechin are the more potent inhibitors of 5-LOX based on the calculated binding free energy and the predicted pIC50 value.

RESUMO

CoQ10 is used not only as a medicine but also as a food supplement due to its various physiological activities. The production of CoQ10 by microbes is a successful approach for generating large amounts of this natural product. The effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) contents and the two-stage fermentation process on cell growth and CoQ10 production by Rhodopseudomonas palustris J001 were investigated. The optimal DO contents for cell growth and CoQ10 production were 45% and 15%, respectively. A two-stage fermentation process, which consists of a 1st stage with 45% DO, a 2nd stage with 15% DO and a synchronous feeding of 2.0% NaAc at the switching time (42 h after inoculation), has proven to be the optimum fermentation process for the production of CoQ10. The maximum biomass, CoQ10 production and CoQ10 production rate were 1.31 g l(-1), 89.1 mg l(-1), and 1.142 mg l(-1) h(-1), respectively, increased by 28%, 585% and 426% as compared to the one-stage batch production with 45% DO. The DO level was the major factor to increase the CoQ10 production by the two-stage process.
