Numerous studies have been devoted to neural mechanisms of a variety of linguistic tasks (e.g. speech comprehension and production). To date, however, whether and how the neural patterns underlying different linguistic tasks are similar or differ remains elusive. In this study, we compared the neural patterns underlying 3 linguistic tasks mainly concerning speech comprehension and production. To address this, multivariate regression approaches with lesion/disconnection symptom mapping were applied to data from 216 stroke patients with damage to the left hemisphere. The results showed that lesion/disconnection patterns could predict both poststroke scores of speech comprehension and production tasks; these patterns exhibited shared regions on the temporal pole of the left hemisphere as well as unique regions contributing to the prediction for each domain. Lower scores in speech comprehension tasks were associated with lesions/abnormalities in the superior temporal gyrus and middle temporal gyrus, while lower scores in speech production tasks were associated with lesions/abnormalities in the left inferior parietal lobe and frontal lobe. These results suggested an important role of the ventral and dorsal stream pathways in speech comprehension and production (i.e. supporting the dual stream model) and highlighted the applicability of the novel multivariate disconnectome-based symptom mapping in cognitive neuroscience research.

Functional neuroimaging techniques have been widely used to probe the neural substrates of facial emotion processing in healthy people. However, findings are largely inconsistent across studies. Here, we introduce a new technique termed activation network mapping to examine whether heterogeneous functional magnetic resonance imaging findings localize to a common network for emotion processing. First, using the existing method of activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis, we showed that individual-brain-based reproducibility was low across studies. Second, using activation network mapping, we found that network-based reproducibility across these same studies was higher. Validation analysis indicated that the activation network mapping-localized network aligned with stimulation sites, structural abnormalities and brain lesions that disrupt facial emotion processing. Finally, we verified the generality of the activation network mapping technique by applying it to another cognitive process, that is, rumination. Activation network mapping may potentially be broadly applicable to localize brain networks of cognitive functions.

Strokes to the left and right hemisphere lead to distinctive behavioral profiles. Are left and right hemisphere strokes (LHS and RHS) associated with distinct or common poststroke neuroplasticity patterns? Understanding this issue would reveal hemispheric neuroplasticity mechanisms in response to brain damage. To this end, we investigated poststroke structural changes (2 weeks to 3 months post-onset) using longitudinal MRI data from 69 LHS and 55 RHS patients and 31 demographic-matched healthy control participants. Both LHS and RHS groups showed statistically common plasticity independent of the lesioned hemisphere, including 1) gray matter (GM) expansion in the ipsilesional and contralesional precuneus, and contralesional superior frontal gyrus; 2) GM shrinkage in the ipsilesional medial orbital frontal gyrus and middle cingulate cortex. On the other hand, only RHS patients had significant GM expansion in the ipsilesional medial superior and orbital frontal cortex. Importantly, these common and unique GM changes post-stroke largely overlapped with highly-connected cortical hub regions in healthy individuals. Moreover, they correlated with behavioral recovery, indicating that post-stroke GM volumetric changes in cortical hubs reflect compensatory rather than maladaptive mechanisms. These results highlight the importance of structural neuroplasticity in hub regions of the cortex, along with the hemispheric specificity, for stroke recovery.

Recent neuroimaging studies demonstrate that creativity is related to brain regions across both hemispheres, and the corpus callosum forms the structural basis of inter-hemispheric information exchange. However, the findings regarding the relationship between inter-hemispheric interaction and creativity remain inconsistent, which may be caused by different types of creativity and neural features being adopted. To clarify the inconsistency, and understand how inter-hemispheric interactions are related to different kinds of creativity, we explored the correlation between eight structural measures of the corpus callosum (CC) and two different domains of creativity [verbal creativity (VerC) and visual creativity (VisC)] using a large healthy-adult sample (n = 446). The results showed that VerC was positively correlated with fractional anisotropy (FA) and negatively correlated with the radial diffusivity (RD) of CC; whereas there was no significant association between VisC and CC measures. These results persisted after regressing VisC from VerC, regressing VerC from VisC, and regress out general intelligence from both creativity measures. In summary, we showed that the structural properties of corpus collosum are associated in different ways with two domains of creativity, i.e., verbal creativity and visual creativity, which enriches our understanding of the underlying neural mechanism in different types of creativity.

The left and right hemispheres of the human brain are two connected but relatively independent functional modules; they show multidimensional asymmetries ranging from particular local brain unit properties to entire hemispheric connectome topology. To date, however, it remains largely unknown whether and how hemispheric functional hierarchical structures differ between hemispheres. In the present study, we adopted a newly developed resting-state (rs) functional connectivity (FC)-based gradient approach to evaluate hemispheric functional hierarchical structures and their asymmetries in right-handed healthy young adults. Our results showed an overall mirrored principal functional gradient between hemispheres, with the sensory cortex and the default-mode network (DMN) anchored at the two opposite ends of the gradient. Interestingly, the left hemisphere showed a significantly larger full range of the principal gradient in both males and females, with males exhibiting greater leftward asymmetry. Similarly, the principal gradient component scores of two regions around the middle temporal gyrus and posterior orbitofrontal cortex exhibited similar hemisphere × sex interaction effects: a greater degree of leftward asymmetry in males than in females. Moreover, we observed significant main hemisphere and sex effects in distributed regions across the entire hemisphere. All these results are reproducible and robust between test-retest rs-fMRI sessions. Our findings provide evidence of functional gradients that enhance the present understanding of human brain asymmetries in functional organization and highlight the impact of sex on hemispheric functional gradients and their asymmetries.
