RESUMO

To investigate the HPV vaccine coverage and post-vaccination adverse reactions in Gansu Province, Western China, from 2018 to 2021. Data on suspected adverse reactions to HPV vaccines were collected from the Chinese Vaccine Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI). Estimate the incidence rates of Common Adverse Reaction and Rare Adverse Reaction. HPV vaccine coverage among females in different age groups was calculated using data from the Gansu Provincial Immunization Information Platform. The first-dose HPV vaccine coverage rate among females aged 9 to 45 was 2.02%, with the lowest rate of less than 1% observed in females aged 9 to 14. From 2018 to 2021, the incidence rates of Common Adverse Reaction and Rare Adverse Reaction reported in females after HPV vaccination were 11.82 and 0.39 per 100,000 doses, respectively. Common Adverse Reaction included fever (5.52 per 100,000 doses), local redness and swelling (3.33 per 100,000 doses), fatigue (3.15 per 100,000 doses), headache (2.76 per 100,000 doses), as well as local induration and nausea/vomiting (1.97 per 100,000 doses). Adverse reactions mainly occurred within 1 day after vaccination, followed by 1 to 3 days after vaccination. The HPV vaccine coverage rate among females aged 9 to 14 in Gansu Province is remarkably low, and there is an urgent need to enhance vaccine coverage. From 2018 to 2021, the incidence of Adverse reaction Following Immunization HPV vaccination fell within the expected range, indicating the vaccine's safety profile.

RESUMO

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted a great deal of attention since they can convert ubiquitous mechanical energy into electrical energy and serve as a continuous power source for self-powered sensors. Optimization of the dielectric material composition is an effective way to improve the triboelectric output performance of TENGs. Herein, the hybrid organic-inorganic lead-iodide perovskite Cs0.05FA0.95-xMAxPbI3 was prepared by blade coating and used as a positive friction layer material. Moreover, PVDF-graphene (PG) nanofibers were prepared as negative friction layer materials by electrostatic spinning. The output performance of the TENG was enhanced by varying the MA content of the pervoskite films and the graphene content of the PG nanofibers. The champion output TENG based on Cs0.05FA0.9MA0.05PbI3/PG-0.15 achieved an open-circuit voltage of 245 V, a short-circuit current of 24 µA, and a charge transfer of 80.2 nC. Meanwhile, a maximum power density of 11.23 W m-2 was obtained at 100 MΩ. Moreover, the device exhibits excellent energy-harvesting properties, including excellent stability and durability, rapidly charges capacitors, and lights commercial LEDs and digital tubes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is one of the leading causes of mortality in hospitalized patients. However, whether the coagulation-related parameters of the hospitalized patients could be used to predict the occurrence of VTE in patients with spinal injury surgery remained unclear. METHOD: The patients with spinal fractures who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled to be analyzed using a retrospective analysis approach. The association of risk factors of enrolled patients and operations to VTE occurrence were analyzed. The activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, thrombin time, D-dimer (D-D), fibrinogen (FIB) and fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) were detected. ROC and HR analysis were applied to evaluate the correlation of coagulation-related parameters and other parameters to VTE occurrence. RESULT: The indicators of D-D, FIB and FDP were significantly elevated in VTE patients compared to non-VTE patients. The multivariate analysis of OR showed that six risk factors, including age ≥ 60, spinal cord injury, postoperative bedtime over 5 days, plasma D-dimer ≥ 0.54 mg/L, plasma fibrinogen ≥ 3.75 g/L and plasma FDP ≥ 5.19 mg/L, were positively correlated to VTE. CONCLUSION: The six risk factors, including D-D, FIB, FDP, age ≥ 60, spinal cord injury, and postoperative bedtime over 5 days, could be used to predict the occurrence of VTE.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Platanus acerifolia is recognized as a source of allergenic pollen worldwide. Currently, five Platanus acerifolia pollen allergens belonging to different protein families have been identified, in which profilin and enolase were characterized by our group recently. Besides, we also screened and identified a novel allergen candidate as triosephosphate isomerase, which was different from already known types of pollen allergens. However, the role of this novel allergen group in Platanus acerifolia pollen allergy was unclear. Therefore, we further investigated the allergenicity and clarify its clinical relevance in this study. METHODS: The natural triosephosphate isomerase from Platanus acerifolia pollen was purified by three steps of chromatography and identified by mass spectrometry. The cDNA sequence of this protein was matched from in-house transcripts based on internal peptide sequences, which was further confirmed by PCR cloning. The recombinant triosephosphate isomerase was expressed and purified from E. coli. Allergenicity analysis of this protein was carried out by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, immunoblot, and basophil activation test. RESULTS: A novel allergen group belonging to triosephosphate isomerase was firstly identified in Platanus acerifolia pollen and named as Pla a 7. The cDNA of Pla a 7 contained an open reading frame of 762 bp encoding 253 amino acids. The natural Pla a 7 displayed 41.4% IgE reactivity with the patients' sera by ELISA, in which the absorbance value showed correlation to the serum sIgE against Platanus acerifolia pollen extract. Inhibition of IgE-binding to pollen extracts reached 26%-94% in different Pla a 7-positive sera. The recombinant Pla a 7 exhibited weaker IgE-reactivity in ELISA than its natural form, but showed comparable activity in immunoblot. The allergenicity was further confirmed by basophil activation test. CONCLUSIONS: Triosephosphate isomerase (Pla a 7) was first recognized as pollen allergen in Platanus acerifolia pollen, which is a completely different type of pollen allergen from those previously reported. This finding is essential to enrich information on allergen components and pave the way for molecular diagnosis or treatment strategies for Platanus acerifolia pollen allergy.

RESUMO

Most mammals tolerate exposure to hypobaric hypoxia poorly as it may affect multiple regulatory mechanisms and inhibit cell proliferation, promote apoptosis, limit tissue vascularization, and disrupt the acid-base equilibrium. Here, we quantified the functional state of germ cell development and demonstrated the interaction between the germ and somatic cells via single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). The present study elucidated the regulatory effects of hypobaric hypoxia exposure on germ cell formation and sperm differentiation by applying enrichment analysis to genomic regions. Hypobaric hypoxia downregulates the genes controlling granule secretion and organic matter biosynthesis, upregulates tektin 1 (TEKT1) and kinesin family member 2C (KIF2C), and downregulates 60S ribosomal protein 11 (RPL11) and cilia- and flagella-associated protein 206 (CFAP206). Our research indicated that prosaposin-G protein-coupled receptor 37 (PSAP-GPR37) ligands mediate the damage to supporting cells caused by hypobaric hypoxic exposure. The present work revealed that hypoxia injures peritubular myoid (PTM) cells and spermatocytes in the S phase. It also showed that elongating spermatids promote maturation toward the G2 phase and increase their functional reserve for sperm-egg binding. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for future investigations on prophylactic and therapeutic approaches toward protecting the reproductive system against the harmful effects of hypobaric hypoxic exposure.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the reliability of dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) perfusion parameters for the evaluation of blood supply to spinal metastatic tumors. METHODS: A total of 36 patients with spinal metastasis who underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance spinal perfusion imaging at Tianjin Hospital from December 2018 to December 2020 were reviewed. Subsequently, the patients underwent corresponding preoperative examination using digital subtraction angiography of the spine at the hospital and were divided into 2 groups accordingly. Differences in dynamic MRI perfusion parameters between the 2 groups were analyzed. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between the 2 groups in the quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI perfusion parameters vascular permeability and plasma volume, as well as semi-quantitative peak enhancement and blood flow ratio parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic MRI perfusion may distinguish spinal metastatic lesions with rich blood supply from those with poor blood supply and may help clinicians identify patients that can benefit from invasive spinal angiography and preoperative embolization. This technique may also provide guidance on decision taking for surgery basing on dynamic MRI perfusion parameters.

RESUMO

Bacterial fluorescent labeling is a powerful tool for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial infections. Here, we present a simple and efficient labeling strategy for Staphylococcus aureus. Intracellular labeling of bacteria was achieved by heat shock using Cyanine 5.5 (Cy5.5) near-infrared-I dyes in S. aureus (Cy5.5@S. aureus). Several key factors, such as Cy5.5 concentration and labeling time, were systematically evaluated. Further, the cytotoxicity of Cy5.5 and the stability of Cy5.5@S. aureus was evaluated by flow cytometry, inverted fluorescence microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, Cy5.5@S. aureus were used to explore the phagocytic behavior of RAW264.7 macrophages. These results proved that Cy5.5@S. aureus had a uniform fluorescence intensity and high luminance; additionally, our method had no significant adverse effects on S. aureus compared to unlabeled S. aureus infections. Our method provides researchers with a useful option for analyzing the behavior of S. aureus as an infectious agent. This technique can be broadly applied to study host cell-bacteria interactions at the molecular level, and to in vivo tracing of bacterial infections.

RESUMO

We aimed to study the effects of a methyltransferase 3 (METTL3) inhibitor on osteomyelitis. Bone marrow cells (BMs) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from osteomyelitis patients at our hospital. Primary BM-derived macrophages (BMDMs) were incubated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), poly(I:C), or PAM3CSK4 after pretreatment with STM2457. S. aureus was injected into the intramedullary canal to construct an osteomyelitis C57BL/6 mice model, which was then treated with STM2457. Body weights, µCT three-dimensional analyses, and bacterial burdens of the mice were obtained. Up-regulated METTL3 expression was found in both BMs and PBMCs of osteomyelitis patients. LPS and PAM3CSK4-induced IL-6 and TNF-α secretion in BMDMs could be inhibited by STM2457 pretreatment, while STM2457 pretreatment did not affect the relative expression of NOS2, IL-6, and TNF-α after incubation with poly(I:C). STM2457 alleviated the symptoms of osteomyelitis in mice with increased body weights, diminished reactive bone formation and cortical bone loss, increased bacterial burdens, and decreased IL-6 and TNF-α secretion. STM2457 pretreatment down-regulated the relative expression of myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), p-TAK, and p-IKKα/ß in LPS-stimulated BMDMs, while it did not show any effect on poly(I:C)-stimulated BMDMs. STM2457 alleviates the onset of osteomyelitis in mice by down-regulating the relative expression of MyD88 and NF-κB relevant inflammation molecules in macrophages.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Humulus japonicus pollen is one of the most common allergenic pollens in China. However, little is unveiled regarding the allergenic components in Humulus japonicus pollen. Our study aimed to purify and identify the pathogenesis-related 1 (PR-1) protein from Humulus japonicus pollen, and to characterize the molecular and immunochemical properties of this novel allergen. METHODS: The natural PR-1 protein (named as Hum j PR-1) was purified from Humulus japonicus pollen extracts with a combined strategy of chromatography, and identified by mass spectrometry. The coding sequence of Hum j PR-1 was confirmed by cDNA cloning. The recombinant Hum j PR-1 was expressed and purified from Escherichia coli. The allergenicity was assessed by immunoblot, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), inhibition ELISA, and basophil activation test using Humulus japonicus allergic patients' whole blood. The physicochemical properties and 3-dimensional structure of it were comprehensively characterized by in silico methods. RESULTS: The allergenicity analysis revealed that 76.6 % (23/30) of the Humulus japonicus pollen allergic patients displayed specific IgE recognition of the natural Hum j PR-1. The cDNA sequence of Hum j PR-1 had a 516-bp open reading frame encoding 171 amino acids. Physicochemical analysis indicated that Hum j PR-1 was a stable and relatively thermostable protein. Hum j PR-1 shared a similar 3-dimensional folding pattern with other homologous allergens, which was a unique αßα sandwich structure containing 4 α-helices and 6 antiparallel ß-sheets, encompassing 4 conserved CAP domain. CONCLUSION: The natural PR-1 was firstly purified and characterized as a major allergenic allergen in Humulus japonicus pollen. These findings would contribute to developing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for Humulus japonicus pollinosis.

RESUMO

The incidence of erectile dysfunction (ED) has been reported to increase after COVID-19 infection, and it is common in COVID-19 patients during recovery. This paper presents a summary of the latest research progress on COVID-19-induced ED and explores the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis and treatment approach based on TCM theory and clinical experience. COVID-19 infection may lead to ED through endothelial dysfunction, testicular injury, hormonal imbalance, and psychological factors. The pathogenesis of COVID-19-related ED is mainly characterized by deficiency of the body's essence and excess of pathogenic factors. In the early stage, it is dominated by deficiency of qi and yin, while in the middle stage, it is mainly due to deficiency of qi and blood stasis. In the long-term, ED is based on the imbalance of yin and yang, with liver stagnation and qi stagnation often co-existing. Clinical manifestations of ED vary, and treatment should focus on tonifying qi and nourishing yin, promoting blood circulation, regulating yin and yang, and soothing liver depression according to TCM diagnosis and treatment principles.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK) extravascular stent was applied to treat a 14-year-old boy with nutcracker syndrome. Digital subtraction angiography revealed a segment of the left renal vein (LRV) with reduced contrast filling immediately before its inflow into the inferior vena cava, and high-pressure gradient. The three-dimensional reconstruction model demonstrated that the LRV and the duodenum were contracted at the aortomesenteric angle, resulting in LRV compression from the abnormal high-level duodenal compartment. When duodenum courses between the abdominal aorta and superior mesenteric artery (duodenal interposition), the LRV entrapment occurs even at <90 aortomesenteric degrees. Three-dimensional printed PEEK extravascular stent was chosen to elevate the superior mesenteric artery and lower the duodenum position, thus relieving LRV compression. This extravascular application has significant advantages over open surgery, endovascular stenting and artificial vessel procedures with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. It provides better cellular vitality by ensuring soft tissue proliferation. By reducing external acceleration and centrifugal force, a three-dimensional printed PEEK extravascular stent reduces adverse side effects. Such a stent has a distinctive personalized design, good stiffness, and durability that allows blood vessel growth, preventing stent migration and thrombosis. Therefore, it is suitable for both adult and pediatric patients. According to the abdominal ultrasound and multi-slice computed tomography scan, the postoperative follow-up results were satisfactory one year after surgery. The patient felt well, the blood flow in the LRV was not obstructed, and the blood flow velocity was average. The external stent was in place.

RESUMO

This paper builds a theoretical model based on a representative peasant household in the neoclassical model, comprehensively considers three types of farmer households in China, and evaluates the effects of the agricultural subsidy policy under equilibrium conditions. Based on the two bottom lines of guaranteeing China's grain security and ensuring no large-scale return to poverty, this paper uses 2010, 2012, and 2014 tracking survey data from the Mutual Aid Fund for Poverty-Stricken Villages in China to construct an econometric model to evaluate agricultural subsidy effectiveness from the three aspects of farmers' total sown area, total grain output, and total income. The research draws the following conclusions: (1) Agricultural subsidies can significantly increase the sown area, grain production, and total income of farmers in poverty-stricken areas, which is conducive to improving the farmers' comprehensive capacity for grain production as well as income, and this conclusion remains valid after performing a series of robustness tests and solving endogeneity problems. (2) The effects of the agricultural subsidy policy are affected by natural conditions, economic development levels, and functional orientation of grain production in different regions, and they have divergent influences on farmers' total sown area, total output, and total income. (3) Agricultural subsidies boost farmers' willingness to cultivate grain, reduce land abandonment, and increase the total sown area, total output, and total grain income. The willingness to cultivate grain is an important mechanism that affects the effectiveness of the agricultural subsidy policy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The pollen from Platanus acerifolia (P. acerifolia) is one of the main causes of allergic disorders. To date, only 4 allergens have been identified from this pollen. But previous studies showed that there still exist under-recognized allergens in it. The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate the newly identified enolase (Pla a 6) as a novel allergen in the P. acerifolia pollen. METHODS: The natural (n) Pla a 6 was purified by combined chromatographic strategies. According to the identified internal peptides, the cDNA sequence encoding this allergen was matched from the mRNA-sequencing results of P. acerifolia pollen, which was further amplified and cloned. The recombinant (r) Pla a 6 was expressed and purified from E. coli. The allergenicity of this novel allergen was characterized by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Western blot, inhibition ELISA, and basophil activation test (BAT). RESULTS: A novel allergen from P. acerifolia pollen, named as Pla a 6 was thoroughly studied, which contained an open reading frame of 1338 bp encoding 445 amino acids. The IgE-binding activity of nPla a 6 was initially proved by Western-blot, and a similar IgE-binding pattern to rPla a 6 was also exhibited. Moreover, the positivity for specific IgE against rPla a 6 was tested as 45.95% (17/37) by ELISA, and IgE binding to pollen extract could be inhibited up to 45.77% by 10 µg/ml of rPla a 6. The protein was also confirmed to activate patients' basophils. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, a novel allergen belonging to enolase family was comprehensively investigated and characterized through its natural and recombinant forms in P. acerifolia pollen. The study will contribute to the development of novel molecular-based diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for P. acerifolia pollen allergy.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In Erectile dysfunction (ED) patients, phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors are considered as the first-line therapy. However, 30-50% of ED patients fail to follow this therapeutic option because of adverse events, lack of efficacy, or drug costs. Antioxidant supplementation is widely applied in clinical practice and viewed as a potential therapeutic option for ED. Therefore, it is attractive to assess the effect of antioxidants supplementation on ED patients. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of antioxidants supplementation on ED. METHODS: Published randomized controlled trials of antioxidants in ED were searched in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to October 3, 2021. Meta-analyses were carried out using a random-effects model. The results were presented as standard mean differences (SMDs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Eighteen studies with 1,331 ED patients were included in the study. Compared with placebo, antioxidants alone treatment showed a statistical increase in International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score (SMD = 1.93; 95% CI: 0.15, 3.72; P = .034). Compared with placebo, antioxidants compound treatment elicited a significant increase in IIEF score (SMD = 2.74; 95% CI: 1.67, 3.81; P < .001) as well as sexual satisfaction score (SMD = 1.61; 95% CI: 0.63, 2.59; P = .001). Compared with the PDE5 inhibitors alone, combination of PDE5 inhibitors and antioxidants showed a significant increase in IIEF score (SMD = 1.1; 95% CI: 0.51, 1.68; P < .001) and sexual satisfaction score (SMD = 1.28; 95% CI: 0.06, 2.51; P = .04). CONCLUSION: This study found that the effect of antioxidant alone treatment on ED may be limited. However, antioxidant compound treatment, as well as combination of PDE5 inhibitors and antioxidants, were associated with improved ED, and can be considered as an accessary therapeutic option for ED. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Platanus acerifolia (P. acerifolia) pollen is one of the most common causes of allergic respiratory symptoms in China. However, the allergenic components in P. acerifolia are not fully studied yet. The study aimed to determine the molecular and immunochemical characterization of the profilin from P. acerifolia pollen. METHODS: The coding sequence of profilin was amplified, cloned, and then expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 cells and purified by nickel affinity chromatography. Protein refolding was followed by structural characterization and homology 3D model building. The allergenicity and cross-reactivity were assessed by ELISA, immunoblotting, or basophil activation test (BAT) using the sera of P. acerifolia allergic patients. RESULTS: The cDNA sequence of profilin was cloned with a 396 bp open reading frame coding for 131 amino acids. The molecular weight of the profilin was approximately 14 kDa, and the predicted structure consisted of 3 α-helixes and 7 ß-sheets. Physicochemical analysis indicated the profilin was a stable, relatively thermostable, and relatively conserved protein. The allergenicity determined by ELISA, western blot, and BAT suggested 76.9% (30/39) of the P. acerifolia pollen allergic patients displayed specific IgE recognition of the profilin. The profilin shared > 80% sequence identity with Pop n 2, the profilin from Populus nigra, and observed a significant cross-reactivity with Pop n 2 in IgE-inhibition assay. CONCLUSION: Profilin, as one of the major component allergens in P. acerifolia pollen, was identified and characterized at molecular and immunochemical levels in this study. These findings would contribute to developing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for P. acerifolia pollen allergic patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cockroaches are an important source of indoor allergens. Environmental exposure to cockroach allergens is closely associated with the development of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergic diseases. However, the allergenic components in the American cockroaches are not fully studied yet. In order to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for cockroach allergy, it is necessary to comprehensively investigate this undescribed allergen in the American cockroach. METHODS: The full-length cDNA of the potential allergen was isolated from the cDNA library of the American cockroach by PCR cloning. Both the recombinant and natural protein molecules were purified and characterized. The allergenicity was further analyzed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, immunoblot, and basophil activation test using sera from cockroach allergic patients. RESULTS: A novel allergen belonging to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) was firstly identified in the American cockroach and named as Per a 13. The cDNA of this allergen is 1255 base pairs in length and contains an open reading frame of 999 base pairs, encoding 332 amino acids. The purified Per a 13 was fully characterized and assessed to react with IgEs from 49.3 % of cockroach allergic patients, and patients with allergic rhinitis were more sensitized to it. Moreover, the allergenicity was further confirmed by immunoblot and basophil activation test. CONCLUSIONS: We firstly identified GAPDH (Per a 13) in the American cockroach, which is a novel type of inhalant allergen derived from animal species. These findings could be useful in developing novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for cockroach allergy.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of 3D printing technology combined with percutaneous nephrolithotomy in the treatment of complex renal calculi. Ninety patients with complex renal calculi were randomly divided into a 3D printing group (45 patients) and a control group (45 patients). In the 3D printing group, a patient-specific 1:1 3D printing model was established based on the patient's thin-layer CT scanning data. A 3D printing model was used for preoperative communication between doctors and patients. Preoperative puncture training, channel design, residual stone prediction, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy were performed under the guidance of a 3D printing model and B-ultrasound. The control group was treated with the conventional B-ultrasound-guided puncture method. Results suggest that there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05). The overall score of the doctor-patient communication objects in the 3D printing group was 19.32 ± 1.57 points, and in the control group, it was 14.51 ± 2.13 points. The operation time of the 3D printing group was 103.21 ± 13.49 min, and that of the control group was 126.12 ± 25.87 min. The calculi clearance rate of the 3D printing group was 96%, while that of the control group was 80%. The incidence of postoperative complications was 6.67% in the 3D printing group and 22.22% in the control group. Compared with traditional percutaneous nephrolithotomy, 3D printing technology combined with percutaneous nephrolithotomy can significantly enhance the effectiveness of doctor-patient communication, shorten operation time, reduce operation bleeding, improve the stone clearance rate, reduce the incidence of complications and shorten the length of hospital stay. The proposed method is thus a safe and effective method to treat complex renal calculi.

RESUMO

This study was designed to examine the cognitive responses of rat simulation model of the undersea environment. Rats were randomized into five groups: control, restraint, hyperbaric air, restraint with hyperbaric air, and restraint with hyperbaric air and immersion The cognition functions were assessed by Morris water maze test and forced swimming test. The cerebral blood flow (CBF) was monitored. The parameters examined were total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px), glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GR), and malondialdehyde (MDA). It was observed that the rats in the experimental groups had impaired learning and memory and behavioral despair accompanied by increase in CBF and MDA levels but decrease of TAC, SOD, CAT, GSH-px, GSH, and GR levels. These indicated that the simulated underwater conditions might cause immediate and transient cognition impairment in the rat models. The simulated environment induced oxidative stress led to the negative cognitive changes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no consensus on the effect of obstructive sleep apnea on male serum testosterone levels. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the association between obstructive sleep apnea and male serum testosterone level. METHODS: The literature related to obstructive sleep apnea and male serum testosterone in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from their inception to June 10, 2021. Data were pooled using the Stata 15 software. We performed a subgroup analysis of studies after matching the age and body mass index, as well as according to the severity of obstructive sleep apnea. RESULTS: Eighteen studies involving 1823 men were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. A significant inverse association between obstructive sleep apnea and male serum testosterone (SMD = -0.76; 95% CI: -1.18, -0.33; p = 0.001) was found. After adjusting for age and body mass index, this inverse association still existed (SMD = -0.8; 95% CI = -1.41, -0.18, p = 0.012). According to the subgroup analysis of obstructive sleep apnea severity, our results showed that serum testosterone was not significantly decreased in mild (SMD = -0.58; 95% CI = -1.88, 0.73, p = 0.386) and moderate obstructive sleep apnea patients (SMD = -0.94; 95% CI = -2.04, 0.15, p = 0.092), whereas it was significantly reduced in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (SMD = -1.21; 95% CI = -2.02, -0.41, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Obstructive sleep apnea is inversely associated with male serum testosterone levels, independent of body mass index and age. Notably, the severity of obstructive sleep apnea is also correlated with male serum testosterone, which is significantly reduced in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea.
