RESUMO

Two members of the Culex pipiens subgroup, Culex pallens and Culex pipiens f. molestus, are known to occur in the Republic of Korea (ROK). These species exhibit morphologically similar features and are challenging to distinguish below the species level. Therefore, this study utilized wing geometric morphometrics (GM) on the right wing of the Culex pipiens subgroup, alongside sequencing of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) region. Mosquitoes were collected from 11 locations between June and October (2020-2022) to minimize regional and seasonal variations. Additionally, Culex pipiens f. pipiens, which is not native to the ROK, was included in the analysis. Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Aedes albopictus, and Anopheles sinensis, the primary vectors in the ROK, were used as outgroups for comparison. All three taxa in the Culex pipiens subgroup could be identified with an 82.4%-97.0% accuracy using GM. However, a comparison of the COI regions of the Culex pipiens subgroup revealed no clear differences between the taxa. These data can be used for accurate identification, contributing to effective mosquito control, in addition to providing a foundation for evolutionary and ecological studies on wing shape differences.

RESUMO

Porphyran, a polysaccharide composed of red algae, is a source of a multifunctional oligosaccharide material and raw biomass with various physiological activities. The glycolysis of porphyrans into oligosaccharides through various porphyranases is an approach for obtaining high-quality and promising alternative resources. In this study, porphyran was extracted from Porphyra yezoensis and used as a research substrate. We also established an efficient hydrolysis method using an enzymatic complex obtained through cohesin-dockerin interactions that degrade natural polysaccharides. The cohesion-dockerin interaction is designed to genetically bind the dockerin module to the end of an existing enzyme and then attach the cohesin module to obtain a protein complex. The designed protein complex has been shown to further increase the activity on the substrate, which can be considered a useful method to obtain efficient oligosaccharides or monosaccharides through hydrolysis of red algae for bioresources.

RESUMO

We investigated the atomic structure of inclined threading edge dislocation (TED) typically observed in GaN grown on Si(111) through (scanning) transmission electron microscopy. Atomic observations verified that the inclined TED consisted of two partial dislocations. These results imply that the inclined TED possesses a Ga-Ga atomic configuration that is energetically unfavorable. However, the introduction of such structures is considered unavoidable because the TEDs should climb regularly to mediate the applied stress or the increasing surface due to the buffer layer. This Ga-Ga configuration is highly likely to form metallic bonds and appears to be the primary reason for the inferior efficacy of a GaN light-emitting diode grown on Si(111).

RESUMO

We fabricated electrolyte-dielectric-metal (EDM) device incorporating a high-k Al2O3 sensing membrane from a porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) using a two step anodizing process for pH sensors. In order to change the properties of the AAO template, the crystallizing temperature was varied from 400 degrees C to 700 degrees C over 2 hours. The structural properties were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The pH sensitivity increased with an increase in the crystallizing temperature from 400 degrees C to 600 degrees C. However at 700 degrees C, deformation occurred. The porous AAO sensor with a crystallizing temperature of 600 degrees C displayed the good sensitivity and long-term stability and the values were 55.7 mV/pH and 0.16 mV/h, respectively.
