RESUMO

Recently, Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) has been greatly developed and widely used in image synthesis. A Style-Based Generator Architecture for Generative Adversarial Networks (StyleGAN) which is the foremost, continues to develop human face inversion domain. StyleGAN uses insufficient vector space to express more than one million pixels. It is difficult to apply in real business due to distortion-edit tradeoff problem in latent space. To overcome this, we propose a novel semantic segment encoder (SSE) with improved face inversion quality by narrowing the size of restoration latent space. Encoder's learning area is minimized to logical semantic-segment units that can be recognized by humans. The proposed encoder does not affect other segments because only one segment is edited at a time. To verify the face inversion quality, we compared with the latest encoders both Pixel2style2Pixel and RestyleEncoder. Experimental result shows that the proposed encoder improved distortion quality around 20% while maintain editing performance.

An intermittent fasting regimen is widely perceived to lead to various beneficial health effects, including weight loss, the alleviation of insulin resistance, and the restructuring of a healthy gut microbiome. Because it shares certain commonalities with this dietary intervention, Ramadan fasting is sometimes misinterpreted as intermittent fasting, even though there are clear distinctions between these two regimens. The main purpose of this study is to verify whether Ramadan fasting drives the same beneficial effects as intermittent fasting by monitoring alterations in the gut microbiota. We conducted a study involving 20 Muslim individuals who were practicing Ramadan rituals and assessed the composition of their gut microbiomes during the 4-week period of Ramadan and the subsequent 8-week period post-Ramadan. Fecal microbiome analysis was conducted, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were assessed using liquid-chromatography-mass spectrometry. The observed decrease in the levels of SCFAs and beneficial bacteria during Ramadan, along with the increased microbial diversity post-Ramadan, suggests that the daily diet during Ramadan may not provide adequate nutrients to maintain robust gut microbiota. Additionally, the notable disparities in the functional genes detected through the metagenomic analysis and the strong correlation between Lactobacillus and SCFAs provide further support for our hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) is a representative tumor marker used for the diagnosis of pancreatic and biliary tract cancers. There are few published research results that can be applied to actual clinical practice for ampullary cancer (AC) alone. This study aimed to demonstrate the relationship between the prognosis of AC and the level of CA 19-9, and to determine the optimal thresholds. METHODS: Patients who underwent curative resection (pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) or pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD)) for AC at the Seoul National University Hospital between January 2000 and December 2017 were enrolled. To determine the optimal cutoff values that could clearly stratify the survival outcome, the conditional inference tree (C-tree) method was used. After obtaining the optimal cutoff values, they were compared to the upper normal clinical limit of 36 U/mL for CA 19-9. Results In total, 385 patients were enrolled in this study. The median value of the tumor marker CA 19-9 was 18.6 U/mL. Using the C-tree method, 46 U/mL was determined to be the optimal cutoff value for CA 19-9. Histological differentiation, N stage, and adjuvant chemotherapy were significant predictors. CA 19-9 36 U/mL had marginal significance as a prognostic factor. In contrast, the new cutoff value, CA 19-9 46 U/mL, was found to be a statistically significant prognostic factor (HR: 1.37, p = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS: The new cutoff value of CA 19-9 46 U/mL may be used for evaluating the prognosis of AC. Therefore, it may be an effective indicator for determining treatment strategies such as surgical treatments and adjuvant chemotherapy.

Peach gummosis disease has been identified as a serious challenge in Korean agriculture and has developed to become a major cause of agricultural productivity losses. However, treatments for gummosis have not been systemically established and studies of the microbiome closely related to this plant disease are lacking. Therefore, we analyzed the bacterial and fungal communities in the bark and rhizosphere soil of healthy peach trees and those with gummosis. Through high-throughput sequencing, we obtained unprecedented insights into the bacterial and fungal dynamics of each group, including their diversity and taxonomic classification, as well as network analyses. We found that the presence of gummosis drives a significantly higher alpha diversity in the bark bacterial community. Peach gummosis bark mycobiomes included greater numbers of opportunistic pathogens such as Ascochyta, Botryosphaeria, Saccharomyces, Nectriaceae_NA, Trametes, and Valsaceae_NA. However, the microbiome also included bacteria beneficial to plant growth and the production of polysaccharides-namely, 1174-901-12, Catenibacterium, Cutibacterium, Friedmanniella, Methylobacterium-Methylorubrum, Pseudomonas, Rhodobacter, and Sphingomonas. Furthermore, we confirmed that gummosis induced a more complex structure in the bark microbiome network. We conclude that the findings of this study provide a valuable aid in profiling the overall peach tree microbial ecosystem, which can be utilized to develop precise biomarkers for the early diagnosis of gummosis.

Wastewater treatment plants act as microplastic (MPs) sinks and secondary MP pollution sources. Little is known about the effect of MPs on biomass and the efficiency of biological wastewater treatment. This study assessed the impact of polyethylene (PE) MPs concentrations (1, 10, 50 mg/L) in wastewater on biological conversions and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production (including alginate) in aerobic granular sludge (AGS). PE MPs did not worsen the efficiency of biological treatment but stimulated the production of EPS and alginate in AGS. The alginate content increased from 238.7 ± 4.4 mg/g MLSS in control to 441.6 ± 13.8 mg/g MLSS at the highest PE load in wastewater. The presence of MP changed AGS morphology and worsened the settling properties of biomass, causing biomass washout from the reactors. At the highest PE load in wastewater, the biomass concentration in the reactor effluent was over 2.8 times higher than in the control.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has emerged for the therapeutic treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI) with concurrent inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As the first Iranian population cohort, we examined how gut microbiota and their functional profiles change in Iranian rCDI patients with underlying IBD before and after FMT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: FMT was performed to eight IBD patients via colonoscopy. Profiles of gut microbiota from donors and recipients were investigated using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. RESULTS: Patients experienced no IBD flare-ups or other adverse effects, and all recovered to full health. Moreover, all rCDI patients lacked the Bacteroidetes present in donor samples. After FMT, the proportion of Bacteroidetes increased until a normal range was achieved. More specifically, the relative abundance of Prevotella was found to increase significantly following FMT. Prevotella was also found to correlate negatively with inflammation metrics, suggesting that Prevotella may be a key factor for resolving CDI and IBD. Gut microbiota diversity was found to increase following FMT, while dysbiosis decreased. However, the similarity of microbial communities of host and recipients did not increase, and wide variation in the extent of donor stool engraftment indicated that the gut bacterial communities of recipients do not shift towards those of donors. CONCLUSION: FMT leads to significant alterations of the community structure of gut bacteria in rCDI patients with IBD. The change in relative abundance of Proteobacteria and bacterial diversity indicated that FMT promotes recovery from intestinal permeability and inflammation in rCDI patients. Moreover, strong negative correlation between Prevotella and inflammation index, and decreased dysbiosis index advocate that the improvement of CDI is possibly due to gut microbiome alteration. Collectively, our findings show that FMT would be a promising therapy to help reprogram the gut microbiome of Iranian rCDI patients with IBD.

Strain KUDC5002T was isolated from soil sampled on the Dokdo Islands, Republic of Korea. This bacterial strain was Gram stain-positive, non-motile, rod-shaped, capable of growing at 25-37°C and pH 5.0-12.0, and showed optimal growth at 30 °C and pH 7.0-8.0. Strain KUDC5002T could be grown in tryptic soy broth containing less than 7.0 % NaCl (w/v). The cell width ranged from 0.5 to 0.6 µm and length ranged from 0.8 to 1.0 µm. Strain KUDC5002T was catalase- and oxidase-positive. Its genomic G+C content was 72.2 mol%. Its major fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω9c (17.3 %), iso-C16 : 0 (16.0 %) and iso-C17 : 0 (11.4 %). Phylogenetic analysis, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, showed that strain KUDC5002T belongs to the genus Nocardioides and is most closely related to strain Nocardioides humi DCY24T (97.0 %). Based on its phenotypic, phylogenetic, genetic and chemotaxonomic features, strain KUDC5002T should be considered a novel species in the genus Nocardioides, for which we have proposed the name Nocardioides sambongensis sp. nov. The type strain is KUDC5002T (=KCTC 39855T=DSM 106604T).

RESUMO

The Silurus microdorsalis is known as Korean endemic slender catfish. Despite its value as a biological resource, there is no complete mitochondrial genome sequence. The complete mitochondrial genome consisted of 16,524 bp including 22 transfer RNA (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNAs), 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and A + T rich region. The overall base composition of S. microdorsalis was A + T: 56.1%, C + G: 43.9%, apparently with slight AT bias. Phylogenetic relationship showed that S. microdorsalis was closely related to Silurus glanis.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to determine whether certain biomaterials have the potential to support cell attachment. After seeding bone marrow stromal cells onto the biomaterials, we investigated their responses to each material in vitro. METHODS: Rat bone marrow derived stromal cells were used. The biomaterials were deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM), DBBM coated with fibronectin (FN), synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA), HA coated with FN, HA coated with ß-tricalcium phosphate (TCP), and pure ß-TCP. With confocal laser scanning microscopy, actin filaments and vinculin were observed after 6, 12, and 24 hours of cell seeding. The morphological features of cells on each biomaterial were observed using scanning electron microscopy at day 1 and 7. RESULTS: The cells on HA/FN and HA spread widely and showed better defined actin cytoskeletons than those on the other biomaterials. At the initial phase, FN seemed to have a favorable effect on cell adhesion. In DBBM, very few cells adhered to the surface. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, we can conclude that in contrast with DBBM not supporting cell attachment, HA provided a more favorable environment with respect to cell attachment.
