Introduction: Bladder cancer is a common malignancy in men over 55 years of age, which is mainly caused by smoking and environmental occupation. It corresponds to the eighth cause of death from cancer worldwide and is the fourteenth cause of death in Chile, being included in the Explicit Health Guarantees. Given the above, this research seeks to collect data and contribute to medical knowledge and public health. Methodology: Retrospective descriptive observational study on deaths from malignant tumors of the urinary bladder in Chile (at the national-regional level). Data analyzed from the DEIS between 2016-2022. No informed consent or ethical review was required. Use of Microsoft Excel for analysis. Results: Retrospective descriptive observational study on deaths from malignant tumors of the urinary bladder in Chile (at the national-regional level). Data analyzed from the DEIS between 2016-2022. No informed consent or ethical review was required. Use of Microsoft Excel for analysis. Discussion: This work highlights the importance of strengthening preventive and therapeutic measures for bladder cancer in Chile, where smoking and mining contamination are significant risk factors. It has been determined that it is common in predominantly male older adults. Mortality rates have remained static in recent years. Except between the years 2020-2021, in which a downward trend was registered. The foregoing shows the importance of continuing to investigate and develop effective treatments, as well as management and prevention protocols.

RESUMO

Coronary artery dissection is a rare cause of acute coronary syndrome. Most cases occur in women during the peripartum period, most likely influenced by hormonal changes, hemodynamic stress and modifications in the immune system during pregnancy. The pathogenesis of coronary artery dissection is unknown, hence numerous theories have been postulated such as pregnancy-related conditions, the presence of connective tissue disorders, trauma, etc. The clinical presentation ranges from asymptomatic patients to the whole spectrum of acute coronary syndrome manifestations. The management of these patients requires a multidisciplinary approach, with two options: medical therapy or an invasive approach, with percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass graft surgery. The choice of treatment options depends on the hemodynamic status of the patient, the extension of the dissection and the myocardial territory at risk. In this case report we present a 38-year-old female who had a coronary artery dissection seven days postpartum. Coronary catheterization showed dissection of the left main coronary artery that extended until the circumflex artery. An intra-aortic balloon pump was installed and the patient then underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery, with satisfactory results.

RESUMO

The Golgi apparatus (GA) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) play a central role in the events related to intracellular trafficking distribution. This work evaluated the dynamics and localization of the GA and ER in canine oocytes during meiotic development in vitro. Cumulus-oocytes complexes (COCs) from ovaries of adult bitches were incubated for IVM for 0, 48, 72 and 96 h. At each time, the nuclear status was determined using DAPI staining, and the GA was evaluated by immunofluorescence using two antibodies against Golgi proteins: GM130 and Giantin. ER was analysed with fluorescent lipid probes (ER-Tracker), for living cells. Golgi structures were homogeneous in the cytoplasm in non-matured oocytes, mainly in those GV-arrested oocytes. In contrast, at 48 h and from GVBD stage, the immunolocalization began to be subcortical, increasing at 72 h and 96 h. Meiotic development increased with time and the majority of oocytes at MI-MII stages showed cortical distribution of Golgi structure. Living ZP intact non-matured oocytes showed a reticular pattern of ER that covered oocyte cortex. Confocal microscopy showed that, in all levels cuts the fluorescence marks were located in the cortical region, irrespective of culture time. The changes and localization in these organelles during IVM might be related to meiotic development, but in a non-synchronous manner.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Lipoteichoic acid (LTA), induces some of the clinical symptoms of Behçet's disease (BD) in a rat animal model. These results led to the hypothesis that LTA may also trigger BD in humans. We investigated the humoral and cellular immune response against LTA and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in patients with BD, and compared these responses with those of patients with active chronic oral ulcers (OU) and normal controls. METHODS: Samples were obtained from 12 active BD, 12 inactive BD, 12 active OU and 12 normal controls. Anti-LTA, anti-LPS antibodies levels and the capacity of immune complexes anti-LTA IgG-LTA to activate complement were studied. Exposed mannose residues in anti-LTA IgG were analyzed in the four groups. The interleukin-8 (IL-8) production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells cultures after LTA and LPS stimulation was also studied in all groups. RESULTS: The capacity to bind mannan binding protein (MBP) of anti-LTA IgGs was significantly higher in BD and active OU patients relative to normal controls (p < 0.001). However, only active BD patients generated significantly higher levels of C5a than controls (p < 0.0001). The IgGs purified from the sera of BD patients showed a high specificity for LTA from Streptococcus sanguis or Streptococcus faecalis. LTA also stimulates the secretion of IL-8 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells isolated from active BD patients. Anti-LPS IgA and IgG titers were significantly higher only in active OU patients relative to normal controls (p < 0.0018). CONCLUSION: These results suggest a mechanism involving LTA from streptococci in the pathogenesis of BD.
