RESUMO

The Open Databases Integration for Materials Design (OPTIMADE) application programming interface (API) empowers users with holistic access to a growing federation of databases, enhancing the accessibility and discoverability of materials and chemical data. Since the first release of the OPTIMADE specification (v1.0), the API has undergone significant development, leading to the v1.2 release, and has underpinned multiple scientific studies. In this work, we highlight the latest features of the API format, accompanying software tools, and provide an update on the implementation of OPTIMADE in contributing materials databases. We end by providing several use cases that demonstrate the utility of the OPTIMADE API in materials research that continue to drive its ongoing development.

RESUMO

Propagation of elastic waves along the axis of cylindrical shells is of great current interest due to their ubiquitous presence and technological importance. Geometric imperfections and spatial variations of properties are inevitable in such structures. Here we report the existence of branched flows of flexural waves in such waveguides. The location of high amplitude motion, away from the launch location, scales as a power law with respect to the variance, and linearly with respect to the correlation length of the spatial variation in the bending stiffness. These scaling laws are then theoretically derived from the ray equations. Numerical integration of the ray equations also exhibit this behaviour-consistent with finite element numerical simulations as well as the theoretically derived scaling. There appears to be a universality for the exponents in the scaling with respect to similar observations in the past for waves in other physical contexts, as well as dispersive flexural waves in elastic plates.

Recent advancements in cell culture engineering have allowed drug manufacturers to achieve higher productivity by driving higher product titers through cell line engineering and high-cell densities. However, these advancements have shifted the burden to clarification and downstream processing where the difficulties now revolve around removing higher levels of process- and product-related impurities. As a result, a lot of research efforts have turned to developing new approaches and technologies or process optimization to still deliver high quality biological products while controlling cost of goods. Here, we explored the impact of a novel single use technology employing chromatographic principle-based clarification for a process-intensified cell line technology. In this study, a 16% economic benefit ($/g) was observed using a single-use chromatographic clarification compared to traditional single-use clarification technology by improving the overall product cost through decreased operational complexity, higher loading capacity, increased product recovery, and higher impurity clearance. In the end, the described novel chromatographic approach significantly simplified and enhanced the cell culture fluid harvest unit operation by combining the reduction of insoluble and key soluble contaminants of the harvest fluid into a single stage.

RESUMO

The vibration of a homogeneous circular membrane backed by two taut strings is shown to yield several harmonic overtones for a wide range of physical and geometric parameters. Such a membrane is present at each end of the barrel of an idakka, an Indian snare drum well known for its rich musicality. The audio recordings of the musical drum are analyzed and a case is made for the strong sense of pitch associated with the drum. A computationally inexpensive model of the string-membrane interaction is proposed assuming the strings to be without inertia. The interaction essentially entails wrapping/unwrapping of the string around a curve on the deforming membrane unlike the colliding strings in Western snare drums. The range of parameters for which harmonicity is achieved is examined and is found to be conforming with what is used in actual drum playing and construction.
