RESUMO

Benzophenone (BP) and BP derivatives (BPDs) are widely used as ultraviolet (UV) stabilizers in food packaging materials and as photoinitiators in UV-curable inks for printing on food-contact materials. However, our knowledge regarding the sources and risks of dietary exposure to BP and BPDs in cereals remains limited, which prompted us to conduct this study. We measured the levels of BP and nine BPDs-BP-1, BP-2, BP-3, BP-8, 2-hydroxybenzophenone, 4-hydroxybenzophenone, 4-methylbenzophenone (4-MBP), methyl-2-benzoylbenzoate, and 4-benzoylbiphenyl-in three types of cereals (rice flour, oatmeal, and cornflakes; 180 samples in total). A Bayesian Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MC) simulation approach was used for deriving the posterior distributions of BP and BPD residues. This approach helped in addressing the uncertainty in probabilistic distribution for the sampled data under the detection limit. Through an MC simulation, we calculated the daily exposure levels of dietary BP and BPDs and corresponding health risks. The results revealed the ubiquitous presence of BP, BP-3, and 4-MBP in cereals. Older adults (aged >65 years) had the highest (97.5 percentile) lifetime carcinogenic risk for BP exposure through cereals (9.41 × 10-7), whereas children aged 0-3 years had the highest (97.5 percentile) hazard indices for BPD exposure through cereals (2.5 × 10-2). Nevertheless, across age groups, the lifetime carcinogenic risks of BP exposure through cereals were acceptable, and the hazard indices for BPD exposure through cereals were <1. Therefore, BPD exposure through cereals may not be a health concern for individuals in Taiwan.

RESUMO

Due to the numerous industrial parks and high traffic density in Miaoli, Taiwan, large amounts of metals may be released into the atmosphere, accumulating in street dust. Therefore, this study aimed to collect street dust in Miaoli to quantify the metals and assess the accumulation degree, sources, and potential risks. The enrichment factor (EF), geological accumulation index (Igeo), ecological risk, and non-carcinogenic and lifetime carcinogenic risk were estimated to assess the accumulation degree and the potential environmental and health risks. Pearson correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and positive matrix factor model were used to clarify the relationship between levels of metals and identify possible sources. The levels of metals in street dust in order were Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Sr > Co > Sb. According to Igeo, the level of Ni indicated moderately polluted. The levels of Zn, Cu, and Pb showed moderate to strong pollution, strong pollution, and very strong pollution, respectively. Results of average ecological risk analysis pointed out that Pb and Cu represent a very high risk, while other metals posed low-to moderate-level ecological risks. Excluding the Steel Enterprise area, based on the EF value and source identification, it might be concluded that Co, Sr, Fe, Mn, and Sb were mainly from natural sources, while Cu, Pb, and Zn come from anthropogenic pollution sources. Based on the results of the risk assessments, most metals pose no serious adverse health risk to humans. But, in comparison to Miaoli townships, the health risks of residents living in the Steel Enterprise area were higher. However, given that children and adolescents exposure to Co, Cr, Pb, and Ni together constitute a relatively higher carcinogenic risk (CR > 10-6), more attention needs to be paid to the populations most susceptible.

RESUMO

One of the most concerning emerging pollutants is microplastics (MPs), which can infiltrate soft tissues of organisms by ingestion, adhesion, and fusing and may even become embedded in biominerals. However, very little evidence is available about MPs in biominerals found in the wild. This study detected the abundance and characteristics of MPs in the shells of farmed oysters (Crassostrea angulata) off the coast of Taiwan and discussed the distribution, accumulation, and diversity in the oyster shells. The results showed that MPs were ubiquitous in oyster shells, with an average abundance of 0.70 ± 0.40 MPs/g. MPs abundance was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in small oyster shells (shell length < 6.5 cm, weight 5-10 g) and inorganic (CaCO3) fraction (HCl digestion) than in large oyster shells (>6.5 cm, 10-25 g) and an organic fraction (H2O2 digestion), respectively. However, there was no significant difference in MPs abundance between the top and bottom shells (p > 0.05). MPs with a size <2 mm accounted for 78.5 %, fibrous MPs for 93.7 %, and rayon for 89.5 %. The MPs diversity integrated index (MPDII) in oyster shells was low (0.27), and the small and fibrous MPs seemed more easily embedded in biominerals. The findings confirm the presence of MPs in oyster shells in coastal environments. In addition, oyster shells may contain higher amounts of MPs than soft tissues 4-5 times, which needs to be confirmed. Further revealing the distribution and accumulation of MPs in water/terrestrial biominerals will help to understand the fate of MPs in the environment.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) may be underestimated in coral reef sediments. Current pretreatments for determining MPs in the sediments are mainly density separation and organic matter removal, ignoring MPs that may be embedded or encrusted in biominerals. This could lead to discrepancies in assessing the potential risk of MPs contamination. To confirm whether MPs in coral reef sediments are underestimated, a two-step sequential digestion, including organic matter removal (H2O2 digestion) and biomineral removal (HCl digestion), was performed on sediments from the coral reef area of the South Penghu Marine National Park (SPMNP, Taiwan). The MPs abundance and characteristics of the two steps were analyzed separately. The results showed that the average MPs abundance after HCl digestion (78 ± 42 MPs/kg) was significantly higher than that of H2O2 digestion (38 ± 25 MPs/kg). The MPs diversity integrated index (MPDII) in coral reef sediments was low (MPDII = 0.35), and MPs were mainly small (<2.0 mm, 91.3 %), fibrous (93.5 %), colored (60.9 %), and rayon polymers (73.9 %). Correlation analysis showed that MPs in biominerals mainly dominated MPs in the sediments. These results confirm that current assessments of MPs contamination levels in biomineral-rich sediments may be underestimated and uncertain. In addition, the mineralization of organisms in SPMNP reef regions was affected by MPs from moderate to high levels, depending on the proportion of MPs in biominerals.

RESUMO

Fishing ports are among the environments that accumulate pollutants along the coast but often lack environmental data and scientific research. This study investigated 8 metals, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 10 phthalate esters (APs), and 2 alkylphenols (APs) in the surface sediments of Qianzhen Fishing Port, the largest pelagic fishing port in Taiwan. Indicator compounds, pollution hotspots, potential ecological risk levels, and pollution sources were evaluated. Results showed that copper, zinc, and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in surface sediments were pollution indicators posing potential toxicological risks. Metals and PAHs in sediments were mainly from ship-related sources, while PAEs and APs were related to dockland activities. Combining metal and organic pollutants, the sediments had a moderate potential ecological risk, with metals higher than organic pollutants. Cluster analysis and color geographic map of risks indicate sediment pollution hotspots and areas requiring immediate intervention. In the future, sustainable operation and management can be carried out by using metal-free antifouling paint, improving sewage treatment rate, and regular environmental dredging of fishing port.

RESUMO

The chemical forms of metals in sediments of ports around Taiwan were investigated using sequential extraction. Based on the availability of different chemical forms, novel indices such as bioavailability, mobility, availability, and availability risk of metals in sediments were developed. The results showed that Co, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cu were mainly present in available forms (49-84 %), and the proportion of oxidative or reductive fractionation was the highest. This suggests that the redox potential is a major factor for metal mobility in the sediments. The results from the proposed indexes showed that metals in sediments have low bioavailability but high to very high mobility and availability. Primarily, the proposed index is more appropriate, as the current index for assessing total metal content may overestimate the level of risk. The indexes established can comprehensively evaluate the bioavailability, mobility, availability, and ecological risk of metals in sediments.

RESUMO

This study collected surface sediments from seven ports in Taiwan and analyzed their characteristics along with 10 metals. Enrichment factor (EF), relative EF (REF), potential ecological risk index (PERI), and mean effect range median quotient (m-ERM-q) were used to evaluate the levels of metal contamination and ecological risks in sediments. Principal component analysis (PCA) and the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model were applied to quantify the main factors affecting the variations in sediment metals. The different normalization techniques that vary between indexes significantly affect the estimates of risk levels for sediment metals. APCS-MLR model confirmed the significant difference among the sediment quality indices in the degree of anthropogenic pollution, ranging in the order of REF (normalized with reference site and Fe, 97.0 %), PERI (normalized with reference site, 85.5 %), EF (normalized with crust and Fe, 79.4 %), and m-ERM-q (not normalized, 56.6 %).

RESUMO

This study aimed to introduce sediment properties (total organic carbon (TOC), acid-volatile sulfides (AVS), particle size distribution) into sediment quality guideline-based risk quotients to assess the potential toxicity of metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, and Pb) released from sediments. Sediment was collected at three times points in 20 sampling sites in Kaohsiung Harbor. The Microtox® toxicity test was used to assess the sediment toxicity and the relationship between sediment toxicity and risk quotient estimated based on the metal concentration was constructed. To improve the toxicity prediction and modify the risk quotient according to the sediment properties, stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR) models that have been tested over wide ranges of TOC, AVS, and particle size distribution to determine the key sediment properties. Common multimetal indices, including the pollution load index, modified degree of contamination index, Nemerow pollution index, potential ecological risk index, and total toxic risk index, were compared with sediment toxicity to evaluate the degrees of correlation. By modifying the relationship between metal toxicity and the risk quotient by including TOC and AVS, the prediction showed that sediments in Kaohsiung Harbor were generally of slight acute toxicity to acute toxicity to organisms, with sampling sites near an industrial zone showing a higher probability of high acute toxicity. In particular, the acute risk of adverse effects on aquatic organisms from sediments in the Salt River estuary was significantly higher than that at other sites, which was consistent with the results of assessment based on the multimetal indices. This study suggests that the MLR-based approach may facilitate the adoption of updated site-specific metals standards that more accurately account for the parameters affecting metal bioavailability than metal concentration standard alone.

RESUMO

The accumulation of pollutants in the semi-enclosed waters of ports has long been a concern. This study assessed the pollution status, sources, and toxicity risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of 7 major ports in Taiwan. Total PAHs concentrations in sediments ranged between 8.4 and 572.5 ng/g dw, with an average of 112.4 ± 136.5 ng/g dw. The 3- and 4-ring PAHs (63 %) were the major constituents of PAHs in the sediments. Diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization analyses indicated that PAHs in sediments were mainly contributed by biomass combustion (45.0 %), coal combustion (31.5 %), and vehicle emissions and related fossil fuels (23.5 %). The results of ecological risk assessment showed a low-medium risk of PAHs in the sediments outside the port, whereas most of the sediments within the port presented a medium-high risk. An assessment of the possible human health risks indicated that PAHs were present at acceptable levels.

RESUMO

Trace metal assessment in marine phytoplankton is challenging due to complex assemblages and variable amounts of abiogenic suspended particulates. Using aliquots, this study were able to compare trace metal concentrations in plankton samples subjected to size and density fractionation. Elements including Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, Hg, and Pb were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Trace metals were found to be significantly higher in size fractionated than density fractionated plankton for both small (1.2-50 µm) and large (50-120 µm) fractions. Metals from abiogenic sources (61-88%) also significantly contributed to trace metals detected in 1.2-120 µm suspended particulates collected from Kaohsiung Harbor. Results suggest that size fractionation can potentially overestimate trace metals in phytoplankton. It is therefore recommended combining the two methods by first isolating different size fractions followed by density fractionation to separate phytoplankton from zooplankton, and abiogenic particulates from phytoplankton assemblages, respectively.

RESUMO

The silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) is the most abundant and widely distributed shark species in the marine system of tropical regions. However, it appears that there is limited information on USEPA 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentration in silky shark muscle tissue, which has together with the lack of a health risk assessment of human consumption of silky shark filets. The potential toxicity of PAHs in muscles of silky sharks and cancer and non-cancer risk of consumers were assessed. Results showed that the total PAHs (TPAHs) concentration in the muscle tissue of silky sharks was between 62 and 657 ng/g ww, with an average of 234 ± 221 (mean ± standard deviation) ng/g ww, and can be considered as minimally to moderately contaminated level. Naphthalene (NA), phenanthrene (PH), and fluoranthene (FLU) are the most abundant PAHs in silky sharks muscle tissue, accounting for 38.6%, 11.0%, and 19.0% of TPAHs, respectively. The average values of toxic benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) equivalent (TEQcarc) and toxic dioxin equivalent (TEQfish) of PAHs equal to the potency of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in silky shark muscle are 13.5 ± 16.4 ng BaP/g ww and 34.1 ± 77.4 pg TCDD/g ww, respectively, and they showed a good linear relationship (r = 0.928; p < 0.001). The TEQcarc of silky sharks muscle is higher than USEPA's screening value of PAHs of 3.2 ng BaP/g ww for adults, indicating a potential negative impact on public health. The calculated hazard index (HI) of PAHs is less than 1, suggesting that residents eating silky shark muscle will not expect to cause significant non-cancer risk. However, the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of BaP as 10.6-26.3% and 8.2-32.4% in males and females, respectively, may pose a significant cancer risk. In general, children and the elderly have relatively higher risks, as well as males have a higher cancer and non-cancer risk than females.

RESUMO

The level and distribution of 16 USEPA Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in aquaculture farmed fish (Mugil cephalus and Oreochromis mossambicus) and shellfish (Corbicula fluminea Formosa and Meretrix lusoria) were determined in Taiwan and then assessed cancer and non-cancer risks for those consuming these kinds of seafood. Results indicated that C. fluminea Formosa accumulated the highest average concentration of total PAHs (43.0 ± 11.3 ng/g wet weight) while M. lusoria contained the lowest concentration (20.0 ± 5.8 ng/g) among all species. The low-molecular-weight PAHs were dominant for both fish and shellfish, which consistent with other studies. Notably, parts of high-molecular-weight PAHs were found in shellfish whereas that was little in fish. The calculated hazard quotients (HQ) of all PAHs were smaller than 1 and the incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCR) for Benzo[a]pyrene were below 1 × 10-5, suggesting that PAHs in the collected seafood could pose a low hazard to residents. Although the results indicated that the studied seafood is safe for human consumption, children and seniors post relatively higher risks, suggesting that it needs to continue monitoring and control the PAHs concentration in seafood and the associated environments.

RESUMO

Phthalate esters (PAEs) have known widely being used in plastic products leading to being ubiquitous in the environment by easy to release from those products. This study aims to understand the impact of heavy rainfall on the concentration of PAEs in surface sediments of the Salt River in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and its potential ecological risks on aquatic organisms. The potential ecological risk assessment of sediment PAEs is based on the total risk quotient (TRQ) method. The total concentration of 10 PAEs (∑PAE10) in sediments of the Salt River is 333-13,615 ng/g dw, with an average of 4212 ± 3753 ng/g dw. Before the rainy season, the ∑PAE10 concentration in sediments at the outlets of domestic sewage in upstream was 9768-13,615 ng/g dw, which were relatively higher than other sites (542-3721 ng/g dw). During the rainy season, the ∑PAE10 concentration was 2820-12,041 ng/g dw, which was 1-11 times higher than that determined before the rainy season. After the rainy season, the ∑PAE10 concentration recorded was 530-6652 ng/g dw, which is 1-11 times lower than the value obtained during the rainy season. PAEs in sediments of the Salt River may have low to moderate potential risks to algae, crustaceans, and fish. Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) are the main PAE that poses a potential risk to algae and crustaceans, and to fish respectively, whose values of risk quotient accounts for 40-69% of the TRQ value. The distribution of TRQ values for these aquatic organisms show a decreasing trend of PAEs level with respect to the rainy season: during the rainy season > after the rainy season > before the rainy season. Heavy rainfall may cause more serious pollution in sediments and increase the exposure risk of PAEs to aquatic organisms.

RESUMO

This study investigates distribution, pollution indices, and potential risk assessment for human health and ecology of eight heavy metals in twenty-five street dust samples collected from metropolitan area-Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Results showed that Zn was of the highest concentration (466.4 ± 236.5 mg/kg), followed by Mn (393.9 ± 93.2 mg/kg), Cu (153.7 ± 64.7 mg/kg), Cr (102.4 ± 50.5 mg/kg), Pb (49.6 ± 21.4 mg/kg), Ni (36.2 ± 15.4 mg/kg), Co (7.9 ± 1.9 mg/kg), and Cd (0.5 ± 0.5 mg/kg). The principal component analysis revealed that three sources of heavy metals measured in street dust include vehicular activities (32.38%), mixed source of vehicular and residential activities (26.72%), and mixture of industrial and natural sources (20.23%). The geo-accumulation index values showed levels of non-pollution to moderately pollution for Mn and Co; moderately pollution for Ni; moderately to strongly pollution for Cd, Cr, and Pb; and strongly pollution for Cu and Zn. The potential ecological risk values of all sampling sites were close to the high-risk category. Zn (28.9%), Cu (25.4%), and Mn (24.4%) dominantly contributed to the ecological risk. For non-carcinogenic risk, the hazard quotient values for both children and adults were within a safety level. For carcinogenic risk, the TCRChildren was about 3 times higher than TCRAdults, but still within a tolerable limit (1 × 10-6 to 1 × 10-4) of cancer risk. Cr was a major contribution to potential risks in humans. Such studies on heavy metal in street dust are crucial but are still limited in Vietnam/or metropolitan area in Southeast Asia. Therefore, this study can fill the information gap about heavy metal contaminated street dust in a metropolitan area of Vietnam.

RESUMO

Spatiotemporal variations in the abundance of microplastics (MPs) in surface sediments along the southwestern coast of Taiwan (including harbor and coastal regions) were investigated and the diversity, degree of weathering, and inventory of MPs in the sediments further quantified. The spatiotemporal variations of MP characteristics were used to assess possible transport routes of MPs. Results indicated that the average MP abundance in the partially-enclosed harbor region was 79.3 MPs in 1 kg dry sediment (item/kg dw), which was 3-5 times higher than that in the coastal region. Average MP abundance during the dry season (36.5 ± 52.2 item/kg dw) was relatively higher than that during the wet season (22.3 ± 23.2 item/kg dw). The dominant MPs were small (0.1-1.0 mm, 90%), colored (62.3%), and consisted mainly of fibers (54.1%) and fragments (40.5%). Analysis by µFTIR revealed the presence of ten types of polymers in the MPs, with the most abundant being polypropylene (35.1%), rayon (33.2%), and polystyrene (10.0%). Values of the microplastic diversity integrated index (MPDII) indicated that MP diversity was greater in the harbor region (MPDII = 0.62) than in the coastal region (MPDII = 0.51-0.54), and greater during the wet season (MPDII = 0.60) than during the dry season (MPDII = 0.50). As indicated by values of the MP carbonyl index (CI), the MPs exhibited a high degree of oxidation (CI >0.31) that appeared unrelated to spatiotemporal variations. In the dry season, MP inventory was 12.2 tons and the wet season inventory was 8.1 tons. The hydrodynamic forces may be an influenced force for the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of the MPs in surface sediments. MPs could accumulate in the surface sediments during the dry season and resuspend in the wet season with the higher rainfall and then migrate towards the deep sea following the water flow.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the level of the contaminant of the heavy metals in sludge from different sources and the ecological risk criteria associated with it was also analyzed to establish its reuse in agriculture. The sludge samples were collected from the water plant (WTP), wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and industrial water treatment plant (IPT) in Taiwan. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to measure the trace metals in sludge. The pollution level and ecological risk criteria for heavy metals in sludge were also used to evaluate its reuse in agriculture. The result shows the average concentrations of trace metals in sludge for three groups (WTP, WWTP, and ITP). Significant correlations were found between concentrations of Zn-Ag (p < 0.001). The higher values of Igeo showed in ITP, indicated Hg to be a major pollutant. In Taiwan, the regulations did not establish the reuse of sludge in agriculture. However, the concentration level of trace metals in sludge was particularly lower than the regular levels in most groups, like WTP and WWTP groups. The industrial sludge was not recommended for the use in agriculture. The results of this study can be used for regular monitoring to establish a reference for sludge management and application to agriculture.

RESUMO

Focusing on 27 rare filter-feeding megamouth sharks (Megachasma pelagios) captured as a by-catch of drift gillnet fishery in the Pacific Ocean to the east of Taiwan, this study analyzes the concentrations of 24 elements in their muscle, discusses the bioaccumulation of each element and the correlation between different elements, and assesses the potential health risks of consuming megamouth shark muscle. Among the 24 elements, mean concentrations of Ga, Ag, Li, Bi, Hg, Co, and Cd were relatively low ranging from 10-3 to 10-1 mg/kg, those of Pb, Ba, Mn, Ni, As, Cr, B, Sr, Cu, and Zn ranged from 10-1-101 mg/kg, and those of Fe, Ca, Al, K, Mg, Ti, and Na were relatively high ranging from 101 to 103 mg/kg. The toxic element content index was most significantly correlated with the concentration of Cu. Hence, this study recommends that the concentration of Cu could be used as an indicator of metal accumulation in megamouth shark muscle. The log bioconcentration factor (BCF) ranged from less than 0 to 7.85 in shark muscle. For elements with a concentration of less than 100 µg/L in seawater, the log BCF was inversely proportional to their concentration in seawater. According to the correlation analysis, the accumulation of elements in muscle of megamouth sharks is primarily affected by the concentrations of dissolved elements in seawater, except that the accumulation of Hg, As, Cu, Ti, Al, and Fe appears to be mainly affected by feeding behaviors. The assessment of the health risk of consuming megamouth shark muscle showed that its total hazard index was greater than 1. This suggests that the long-term or high-frequency consumption of megamouth shark muscle may cause health hazards due to the accumulation of trace elements, particularly those with a large contribution of health risk, including As, Hg, and Cu.

RESUMO

Contamination by microplastics (MPs) and the associated organic pollutants has caused potential threats to the ecological environment of global waters. In this study, MPs were sampled by trawling from the surface waters of the estuary, fishing port entrance and harbor entrance areas connected to the southwestern coast of Taiwan. Moreover, the abundance, morphological characteristics, composition, and associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of MPs were analyzed. The abundance of MPs was 0.36 ± 0.21 items/m3, which was 6.4 ± 10.7% of the abundance of zooplanktons. The average abundance of MPs was the highest in the estuary area, indicating that river transport was the primary way for MPs to enter the ocean. The most dominant MPs were small (0.33-2 mm; 78.8 ± 8.1%), colored (60.0 ± 12.8%), fragments (66.1 ± 10.6%), comprising PE (52.6 ± 7.6%), and PP (38.7 ± 9.4%). The decomposition of various plastic products and disposable plastic packaging may be the most significant source. The total concentration of PAHs in MPs ranged from 104 to 3595 ng/g dw, with an average of 818 ± 874 ng/g dw. The diagnostic ratios and the results of principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression of the absolute principal component scores (MLR-APCS) indicated that the PAHs were mainly contributed from sources related to petrogenic (71.4%) and vehicles (28.6%). Most likely due to MPs on the sea surface coming into contact with floating oil spills from ships or floating tar particles.

RESUMO

Water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment samples were collected from Salt River in Taiwan and analyzed the concentrations of 16 types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The analysis results were used to examine the distribution, source, partition behavior, and potential ecological risks of PAHs in the estuarine water systems. The mean concentration of total PAHs in water, SPM, and sediment samples was 0.485-10.2 µg/L, 26.7-169 mg/kg dw, and 0.343-29.4 mg/kg dw, respectively. The highest concentration was found at the river mouth and decreased toward the river and sea with the tide. The distribution of the diagnostic ratios of PAHs showed that the combustion of coal and petroleum products are the main sources of PAHs in Salt River. The in site organic carbon normalized partition coefficients for SPM-water (K'oc(SPMW)) and sediment-water (K'oc(SedW)) were 2.8-4.5 and 4.6-6.0 (log units), respectively, increasing with the number of rings in PAHs. The values log K'oc(SedW) and log K'oc(SPM-W) showed a significant linear correlation with their octanol-water partition coefficients (p < 0.01), and their slopes were 0.427 and 0.316, respectively. The fugacity fraction was used to evaluate the exchange of PAHs in water-SPM-sediment systems. Results showed that in SPM, 2-4-ring PAHs tend to be released into water, whereas 5-6-ring PAHs in water tend to be adsorbed onto SPM. The exchange of PAHs between water and sediment occurs in the direction of adsorption onto sediment from water. The assessment of the mean risk quotient, total toxicity equivalence, and mean effect range-median quotient of PAHs showed that the PAHs in the water and SPM of Salt River may have moderate to high ecological risk. In sediment, PAHs in the lower reaches and estuary may pose moderate to high ecological risk, whereas PAHs in the middle and upper reaches show low to moderate ecological risk.

RESUMO

Shellfishes can easily accumulate metals via water and sediment and which may pose a human health risk by consumption. This study assessed the distribution of metals, including Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, and Hg, in soft tissues of hard clam (Meretrix lusoria), surrounding water body, and sediment in the southwest coast of Taiwan. Hard clams contained the relatively higher concentration of the essential element, such as Zn, Cu, and Ni, and the metal concentration from high to low was Zn > Cu > Ni > Cd > Cr > Pb > Hg. However, the metal concentrations found in hard clam all were lower than the Sanitation Standard for Aquatic Animal of Taiwan. Results of bioaccumulation factors indicated that hard clam shows the ability of metal accumulation from water was higher than that from sediment. Moreover, the metal concentrations in hard clam were negatively correlated with body size except for Hg, which could be presented by the significant power function. Generally, hard clams from the aquaculture pond located on the southwest coast of Taiwan would not be harmful to adult consumers, except for people that consume shellfish more than 100 g. Besides strengthening the management of seafood safety and aquaculture, adjusting the eating and purchasing habits of the consumer could be a practical and feasible way for decreasing health risks. These results can assist the government in determining seafood safety and its implementation in Taiwan.
