RESUMO

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is histopathologically characterized by endothelium-lined papillary structures encircling an acellular fibrin core. The process of IPEH pathogenesis is unclear. The purpose of our study was to identify histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of IPEH to better understand the pathogenesis of this disease. After reviewing microscopic and medical records from Kyungpook National University Hospital, we selected 16 cases of IPEH. Masson's trichrome and immunohistochemical staining as well as hematoxylin-eosin staining for 16 cases of IPH were performed. Immunohistochemical studies included CD31, CD68, mast cell tryptase, hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1α), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Sections from all our cases showed three distinct histological regions including a papillary portion with hyalinized fibrous or fibroblastic cores, an area containing an unorganized thrombus, and organization area with an ingrowth of endothelial cells, myofibroblasts, and fibroblasts. In the organization area, HIF-1α-positive cells were identified in the loose connective tissue. Endothelial cells forming vascular channels were negative for HIF-1α while VEGF was highly expressed in both interstitial mononuclear and endothelial cells. In the papillary portion, the cellular cores were strongly positive for both HIF-1α and VEGF, but the acellular cores were negative. Our investigation confirmed that IPEH is a reactive lesion that incidentally arises during the organization process of older thrombi. It was also found that HIF-1α and VEGF expression was dependent on the thrombus remodeling stage in cases of IPEH.

RESUMO

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), which frequently occurs in sun-exposed areas of the head and neck region, is the most common cutaneous malignancy. The nipple-areola complex (NAC) is an uncommon site for BCC to develop. BCCs in this region display more aggressive behavior and a greater potential to spread than when found in other anatomical sites. This paper outlines the case of 67-year-old female with a solitary asymptomatic black plaque on the right areola. The lesion was initially recognized as Paget's disease of the nipple by a general surgeon. However, the histopathological features showed a tumor mass of basaloid cells, a peripheral palisading arrangement and scattered pigment granules. Finally, the patient was diagnosed with pigmented BCC of the NAC and was referred to the department of dermatology. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed the absence of distant metastasis. A wide excision was done. The lesion resolved without recurrence or metastasis during 14 months of follow-up.

RESUMO

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is a relatively rare degenerative disorder that is poorly understood. PRS is characterized by slowly progressing atrophy affecting one side of the face, and is frequently associated with localized scleroderma, especially linear scleroderma, which is known as en coup de sabre. This is a report of the author's experiences with PRS accompanying en coup de sabre, and a review of the ongoing considerable debate associated with these two entities. Case 1 was a 37-year-old woman who had right hemifacial atrophy with unilateral en coup de sabre for seven years. Fat grafting to her atrophic lip had been conducted, and steroid injection had been performed on the indurated plaque of the forehead. Case 2 was a 29-year-old woman who had suffered from right hemifacial atrophy and bilateral en coup de sabre for 18 years. Surgical corrections such as scapular osteocutaneous flap and mandible/maxilla distraction showed unsatisfying results.

RESUMO

A new Real-Time Subjective Emotionality Assessment (RTSEA) system was developed for this study. The system is composed of two parts: an emotionality input and evaluation parts. An experiment was conducted in order to investigate the effectiveness of the RTSEA system. The present study compared Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) with the RTSEA by presenting 28 subjects with pictures that aroused either positive or negative emotion. Following the experiment, a subjective assessment using a questionnaire was given to the same subjects. According to the correlation coefficients, changes of the RTSEA had strong correlations with the changes of the GSR. Also, the questionnaire results showed marked similarity to the average responses of the RTSEA. In conclusion, the most remarkable characteristic of the present system is that it not only assesses the average emotionality when stimuli are presented, but also shows the trend of change in emotionality over time.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that a transient increase in oxygen level administered to subjects increases the BOLD effect in brain regions associated with verbal cognitive functioning and enhances performance accuracy. A verbal task was presented while brain images were scanned by a 3T fMRI system. The accuracy rate on the verbal task was enhanced during 30% oxygen administration compared to 21% oxygen administration. The neural activations were observed at the occipital, parietal, temporal and frontal lobes, during both 21% and 30% oxygen administration. Increased brain activations were observed in the right middle frontal gyrus, right inferior frontal gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus, cingulate gyrus, left middle temporal gyrus, and left fusiform gyrus with 30% oxygen administration. These results suggest that a higher concentration of breathed oxygen increases saturation of blood oxygen in the brain, and facilitates verbal cognitive performance.
