Objective: : Insomnia is associated with elevated high-frequency electroencephalogram power in the waking state. Although affective symptoms (e.g., depression and anxiety) are commonly comorbid with insomnia, few reports distinguished objective sleep disturbance from affective symptoms. In this study, we investigated whether daytime electroencephalographic activity explains insomnia, even after controlling for the effects of affective symptoms. Methods: : A total of 107 participants were divided into the insomnia disorder (n = 58) and healthy control (n = 49) groups using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and diagnostic criteria for insomnia disorder. The participants underwent daytime resting-state electroencephalography sessions (64 channels, eye-closed). Results: : The insomnia group showed higher levels of anxiety, depression, and insomnia than the healthy group, as well as increased beta [t(105) = -2.56, p = 0.012] and gamma [t(105) = -2.44, p = 0.016] spectra. Among all participants, insomnia symptoms positively correlated with the intensity of beta (r = 0.28, p < 0.01) and gamma (r = 0.25, p < 0.05) spectra. Through hierarchical multiple regression, the beta power showed the additional ability to predict insomnia symptoms beyond the effect of anxiety (ΔR2 = 0.041, p = 0.018). Conclusion: : Our results showed a significant relationship between beta electroencephalographic activity and insomnia symptoms, after adjusting for other clinical correlates, and serve as further evidence for the hyperarousal theory of insomnia. Moreover, resting-state quantitative electroencephalography may be a supplementary tool to assess insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Personalization is considered an important principle in virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy. We aimed to identify whether personalized VR exposure could provoke increased anxiety in patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia as it is considered the first step in successful treatment for anxiety. METHODS: We performed a double-arm, one-day preliminary study among 28 patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia. Three sessions of VR exposure, including a theater, train, and elevator scenario, were conducted in two groups. In the personalized group (n = 14), the brightness and crowd density were customized based on a pre-assessment. In the control group (n = 14), these conditions were fully randomized. Self-reported anxiety, heart rate, skin conductance, and electroencephalography were measured before, during, and after the VR sessions. RESULTS: In the later VR sessions, higher self-reported anxiety levels measured by the Visual Analogue Scale were observed in the personalized exposure group. Increased heart rates during and after the VR sessions were observed in the personalized group. The changes in skin conductance peaks were not significantly different between the groups, but the increase in skin conductance was associated with the participants' perception of presence. The electroencephalogram showed widespread increases in alpha waves in the frontal and temporal areas of the brain in the personalized group than in the control group. CONCLUSION: Personalized VR exposure elicits stronger anxiogenic effects in patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia as suggested by self-report and neurophysiological data. Personalization of VR exposure has the potential for effective behavioral therapy.

In South Korea, anti-feminism is now rapidly spreading online among young men, who have started to identify themselves as a social minority or "victims" of female power. Despite its ramifications, theoretically, anti-feminism is indistinct from the racism and sexism of White men that emerged more than half a century ago. In view of this, it shares the same root as typical modern racism or sexism, although it appears to be a novel phenomenon. Such a hypothesis was buttressed by quantifying the attitudes of anti-feminists toward various outgroups based on the transference of prejudice theory. Moreover, the subtle sexist undertones hidden in their arguments have been discussed using various psychological theories and empirical data/statistics. Additionally, various potential factors that may shape or accelerate their attitudes or behaviors have been discussed on the basis of the threat-defense theory. Through comprehensive literature review based on this theory, this study proposes the features related to Korean anti-feminism, encompassing behavioral/situational (overindulging violent or degrading Internet contents, verbal aggression), relational/epistemic (ostracism, attachment insecurity, pseudo-rationalism), and group-level (provocative interactions, polarization) attributes, some of which may also influence groups other than young men and ingrain or exacerbate the extreme ideologies of other groups, including young women. Scrutinizing Korean online anti-feminism and male-victim ideology may improve our understanding of the psychological origins of various social extremities or radical ideologies beyond cultural barriers.

BACKGROUND: Most findings on the pathophysiology of alcoholism are based on studies using resting-state electroencephalography (EEG). There are few studies on cue-induced craving and on its utility as an electrophysiological index. We examined quantitative EEG (qEEG) activities in alcoholics and social drinkers exposed to video cues and compared their association with subjective alcohol craving and other related psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety and depression. METHODS: This is a between-subjects design. Adult male alcoholics (n = 34) and healthy social drinkers (n = 33) participated. In a laboratory, EEGs were recorded while the participants were presented with craving-inducing video stimuli. Measures used were the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for subjective alcohol craving, Alcohol Urge Questionnaire (AUQ), Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores. RESULTS: One-way analysis of covariance with age showed that alcoholics had significantly increased beta activity in the right DLPFC region (F4) (F = 4.029, p = 0.049), compared to social drinkers when craving-inducing stimuli were presented. Beta activity at the F4 electrode was positively correlated with AUQ (r = .284, p = 0.021), BAI (r = .398, p = 0.001), BDI (r = .291, p = 0.018), and changes in VAS (r = .292, p = 0.017) scores in both alcoholics and social drinkers. In alcoholics, beta activity was significantly correlated with BAI (r = .392, p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: These findings imply functional importance of hyperarousal and negative emotions upon exposure to craving-inducing cues. Frontal EEG indices with beta power could serve as an objective electrophysiological index of craving induced by individually tailored video cues in alcohol consumption behavior.

BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a fundamental component of physical fitness. While maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is the gold standard for quantifying CRF, standard maximal exercise tests using direct measurements VO2max are dependent on the availability of laboratory equipment, and thereby expensive and time consuming. Recently, an equation was formulated to indirectly estimate VO2max using the YMCA 3-minute step test. METHODS: The study included 15 Korean (KR) and 15 Vietnamese (VN) healthy adults aged 19-35 years. All subjects completed a YMCA 3-minute step test (YMCA 3MST) and a maximal exercise treadmill test to predict VO2max and VO2max measures, respectively. RESULTS: There was a significant relationship between VO2max predicted from the YMCA 3MST and actual VO2max measurements from the treadmill test (r = 0.80, p < 0.0001; KR group: r = 0.81, p < 0.0001; VN group: r = 0.93, p < 0.0001). Bland-Altman analysis revealed statistical agreement between tests, although there was a systematic overestimation of 3.36 mL/kg/min for the KR group. CONCLUSION: The equation for predicting VO2max from the YMCA 3MST was validated among the study subjects. However, future research should explore the validity and reliability of the YMCA 3MST equation for estimating VO2max in other populations.

STUDY QUESTION: Is the Transmembrane BAX Inhibitor Motif-6 (TMBIM6) involved in the molecular mechanism by which cisplatin causes reproductive toxicity? SUMMARY ANSWER: TMBIM6 protects against cisplatin-induced testicular toxicity through up-regulation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1),-which maintains the levels of steroidogenic enzymes by decreaseing oxidative stress in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Testosterone production is highly suppressed as a main complication of cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum) anticancer therapy. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Groups of seven wild type or Tmbim6 KO C57BL/6J mice were given a single i.p., injection of cisplatin (30 mg/kg body wt) and testis and serum were collected 3 days later. Tmbim6-lentivirus-mediated testicular expression-rescued KO mice were analyzed to confirm function was restored. Tmbim6-over expressing TM3 mouse Leydig cells were exposed to cisplatin in vitro. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: After collection of the specimens serum testosterone level and testicular weight and structure were compared between the groups. Quantitative PCR, immunoblot, and assays for ROS, HO-1 activity and protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) carbonylation were performed. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Phospho protein kinase B (p-Akt), nuclear factor erythroid 2 (NFE2)-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and its downstream gene product HO-1 and the levels of testosterone synthesis-associated enzymes, including steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), a rate limiting enzyme for testosterone production, were significantly expressed in the presence of Tmbim6 and maintained after cisplatin treament. Excessive post-translational oxidation of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), altered folding capacitance and ROS accumulation, and ER stress were also decreased in the presence of Tmbim6. Higher levels of ER stress and protein hypercarbonylation were consistently observed in KO testis, compared with WT testis. In the Tmbim6 KO mice, lentivirus-mediated testicular expression of Tmbim6 rescued the above phenotypes. Furthermore, the protective role of Tmbim6 against testicular toxicity was consistently shown in Tmbim6-overexpressing TM3 Leydig cells (testosterone producing cells). We conclude that TMBIM6 protects against cisplatin-induced testicular toxicity by inducing HO-1 and enhancing ER folding capacitance. LARGE SCALE DATA: N/A. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: This study was performed using a short, 3-day cisplatin treatment condition. Therefore, the results need to be cautiously interpreted with regard to cisplatin-associated chronic toxicity. Moreover, to determine the clinical relevance of the role of TMBIM6, further studies in testicular cancer are needed. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Cisplatin-associated ER stress and redox imbalance might be implicated as toxicity mechanisms associated with anticancer therapy. BACKGROUND: Curcumin, a major active component of turmeric, has previously been reported to alleviate liver damage. Here, we investigated the mechanism by which turmeric and curcumin protect the liver against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced injury in rats. We hypothesized that turmeric extract and curcumin protect the liver from CCl4-induced liver injury by reducing oxidative stress, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and increasing glutathione peroxidase activation. METHODS: Chronic hepatic stress was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of CCl4 (0.1 ml/kg body weight) into rats. Turmeric extracts and curcumin were administered once a day for 4 weeks at three dose levels (100, 200, and 300 mg/kg/day). We performed ALT and AST also measured of total lipid, triglyceride, cholesterol levels, and lipid peroxidation. RESULT: We found that turmeric extract and curcumin significantly protect against liver injury by decreasing the activities of serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase and by improving the hepatic glutathione content, leading to a reduced level of lipid peroxidase. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that turmeric extract and curcumin protect the liver from chronic CCl4-induced injury in rats by suppressing hepatic oxidative stress. Therefore, turmeric extract and curcumin are potential therapeutic antioxidant agents for the treatment of hepatic disease.
