Introduction: Millennials are emerging as a prominent demographic in the nursing workforce. It is necessary to create an environment that harmonizes the advantages of each generation in a nursing workforce in which various generations coexist. As the importance of mentoring programs for millennial nurses grows, it is believed that the effectiveness of mentoring to support millennial nurses can be enhanced by identifying the attributes of good mentors as perceived by nurses. This study aimed to explore the attributes of good mentors according to millennial nurses in the nursing workforce with a focus on overcoming turnover intention problems. Methods: Four focus group interviews were conducted to collect data, which were subsequently analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method. A descriptive qualitative design involving 22 millennial nurses employed at a tertiary hospital, Hospital A, in Seoul, Republic of Korea was utilized. Results and discussion: Four themes emerged from the analysis: the concept of a significant others, the presence of a driving force to endure, the importance of a guide to a harmonious life, and the value of a partner for growth. The participants themselves identified these themes. To prevent turnover intention among millennial nurses, mentors should employ diverse strategies, and institutional supports are crucial. Furthermore, since it is unrealistic to expect all ideal mentor characteristics to be present in one person, mentor development education is also necessary. This information is valuable for designing mentor development programs and for establishing a solid framework for effective mentoring programs.

BACKGROUND: Forced eruption of an impacted tooth usually requires surgical and orthodontic interventions to successfully bring the tooth into the dental arch. The clinical time required for a forced eruption is difficult to predict before treatment begins and success rates are affected by several factors before and after an eruption. This study was conducted to identify factors that affect the success of forced eruption, the duration of orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth, and the reasons for re-operation and forced eruption failure in a various teeth and cases. METHODS: In this retrospective study, the records regarding the forced eruption of 468 teeth in 371 patients from June 2006 to May 2020 at the Advanced General Dentistry Department of Yonsei University Dental Hospital were initially examined. The records of 214 teeth in 178 patients who completed orthodontic treatment were included in the analysis. Data on patient demographics, tooth characteristics, orthodontic treatment duration, re-operations, and failures were collected from electronic medical records. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in age between the success and failure forced eruption. Factors significantly affecting treatment duration were apex formation, position, rotation, and re-operation. Re-operation had a 96% success rate. The average orthodontic treatment duration was 29.99 ± 16.93 months, but the average orthodontic treatment duration for teeth that undergone re-operation was 20.36 ± 11.05 months, which was approximately 9 months shorter. Additionally, there was an interaction effect between rotation and re-operation on the duration of orthodontic treatment. The causes for failure of forced eruption in 6 cases were ankyloses (3 cases), incomplete alignment with the normal dental arch (2 cases), and a significant deviation in the impacted tooth's location (1 case). CONCLUSIONS: To increase the success rate of forced eruption, age should be considered as a priority, and in order to predict the treatment period, the apex formation status, position in the arch, and rotation should be considered in addition to age. When determining re-operation, considering factors such as ankylosis, root curvature, and apex formation can help in the success of orthodontic treatment.

BACKGROUND: As the nasal mucosa is the initial site of infection for COVID-19, intranasal vaccines are more favorable than conventional vaccines. In recent clinical studies, intranasal immunization has been shown to generate higher neutralizing antibodies; however, there is a lack of evidence on sterilizing immunity in the upper airway. Previously, we developed a recombinant measles virus encoding the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 (rMeV-S), eliciting humoral and cellular immune responses against SARS-CoV-2. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aim to provide an experiment on nasal vaccines focusing on a measles virus platform as well as injection routes. STUDY DESIGN: Recombinant measles viruses expressing rMeV-S were prepared, and 5 × 105 PFUs of rMeV-S were administered to Syrian golden hamsters via intramuscular or intranasal injection. Subsequently, the hamsters were challenged with inoculations of 1 × 105 PFUs of SARS-CoV-2 and euthanized 4 days post-infection. Neutralizing antibodies and RBD-specific IgG in the serum and RBD-specific IgA in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were measured, and SARS-CoV-2 clearance capacity was determined via quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis and viral titer measurement in the upper respiratory tract and lungs. Immunohistochemistry and histopathological examinations of lung samples from experimental hamsters were conducted. RESULTS: The intranasal immunization of rMeV-S elicits protective immune responses and alleviates virus-induced pathophysiology, such as body weight reduction and lung weight increase in hamsters. Furthermore, lung immunohistochemistry demonstrated that intranasal rMeV-S immunization induces effective SARS-CoV-2 clearance that correlates with viral RNA content, as determined by qRT-PCR, in the lung and nasal wash samples, SARS-CoV-2 viral titers in lung, nasal wash, BALF samples, serum RBD-specific IgG concentration, and RBD-specific IgA concentration in the BALF. CONCLUSION: An intranasal vaccine based on the measles virus platform is a promising strategy owing to the typical route of infection of the virus, the ease of administration of the vaccine, and the strong immune response it elicits.

The anion channel SLAC1 functions as a crucial effector in the ABA signaling, leading to stomata closure. SLAC1 is activated by phosphorylation in its intracellular domains. Both a binding-activation model and an inhibition-release model for activation have been proposed based on only the closed structures of SLAC1, rendering the structure-based activation mechanism controversial. Here we report cryo-EM structures of Arabidopsis SLAC1 WT and its phosphomimetic mutants in open and closed states. Comparison of the open structure with the closed ones reveals the structural basis for opening of the conductance pore. Multiple phosphorylation of an intracellular domain (ICD) causes dissociation of ICD from the transmembrane domain. A conserved, positively-charged sequence motif in the intracellular loop 2 (ICL2) seems to be capable of sensing of the negatively charged phosphorylated ICD. Interactions between ICL2 and ICD drive drastic conformational changes, thereby widening the pore. From our results we propose that SLAC1 operates by a mechanism combining the binding-activation and inhibition-release models.

Owing to the rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its variants, the development of effective and safe vaccines has become a priority. The measles virus (MeV) vaccine is an attractive vaccine platform as it has been administered to children for more than 40 years in over 100 countries. In this study, we developed a recombinant MeV expressing the full-length SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (rMeV-S) and tested its efficacy using mouse and hamster models. In hCD46Tg mice, two-dose rMeV-S vaccination induced higher Th1 secretion and humoral responses than one-dose vaccination. Interestingly, neutralizing antibodies induced by one-dose and two-dose rMeV-S immunization effectively blocked the entry of the α, ß, γ, and δ variants of SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, two-dose rMeV-S immunization provided complete protection against SARS-CoV-2 in the hamster model. These results suggest the potential of rMeV-S as a vaccine candidate for targeting SARS-CoV-2 and its variants.

Background: This retrospective study investigated the incidence rate of accidental foreign body aspiration and ingestion according to patient sex, age, and dental department. This study aimed to verify whether the incidence rate is higher in geriatric than in younger patients and whether it is different among dental departments. Methods: Accidental foreign body aspiration and ingestion cases were collected from electronic health records and the safety report system of Yonsei University Dental Hospital from January 2011 to December 2017. The collected data included patients' age, sex, medical conditions, treatment procedures, and foreign objects that were accidentally aspirated or ingested. The incidence rate was calculated as the number of accidental foreign body aspirations and ingestions relative to the total number of patient visits. Differences depending on the patients' sex, age, and dental department were statistically identified. Results: There were 2 aspiration and 37 ingestion cases during the 7-year analysis period. The male to female incidence ratio was 2.8:1. The incidence rate increased with age and increased rapidly among those aged 80 years or older. Seven of the 37 patients with accidental foreign body ingestion had intellectual disability, Lou Gehrig's disease, dystonia, or oral and maxillofacial cancer. The incidence rate was highest in the Predoctoral Student Clinic and the Department of Prosthodontics. The most frequently swallowed objects were fixed dental prostheses and dental implant components. Conclusion: The incidence rate of accidental foreign body aspiration and ingestion differed according to patient sex, age, and dental department. Dental practitioners must identify high-risk patients and apply various methods to prevent accidental foreign body aspiration and ingestion in dental clinics. Inexperienced practitioners should be particularly careful.

Denosumab has been suggested as a first-line therapy for osteoporotic patients. However, a standardized protocol for the prevention of denosumab induced medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) has not yet been established. The purpose of this study was to report denosumab induced MRONJ cases, and investigate the factors affecting the occurrence of MRONJ in patients who underwent denosumab and invasive dental treatment (especially tooth extraction) between October 2016 and March 2020. Four of the 98 patients developed MRONJ before and after tooth extraction. The participants were divided into two groups: receiving only denosumab (n = 51) and receiving bisphosphonate as first treatment and denosumab as second treatment (n = 47). There was no significant difference between groups in the occurrence of MRONJ and factors affecting MRONJ. Two out of 4 patients developed MRONJ regardless of invasive treatment after denosumab administration and proceeded with extraction; one patient developed MRONJ after denosumab administration and extraction. The other patient underwent a tooth extraction without osteoporosis treatment, and non-identified MRONJ developed after denosumab administration. MRONJ cases reported in this study show that MRONJ can develop as chronic inflammation without invasive dental treatment; therefore, implementing preventive dental treatment before initiating denosumab treatment is necessary to reduce the occurrence of MRONJ.

MoS2crystals grown by chemical vapor deposition are suited for realization of practical 2D semiconductor-based electronics. In order to construct complementary circuits with n-type MoS2, another p-type semiconductor, whose performance can be adjusted corresponding to that of MoS2in the limited chip area, has to be sought. Herein, we present a method for tuning switching threshold voltages of complementary inverters simply via inkjet printing without changing their channel dimensions. Random networks of inkjet printed single-walled carbon nanotubes are formed as p-channels beside MoS2, and their density and thickness are controlled by varying the number of printed layers. As a result, p-type transistor characteristics as well as inverter characteristics are facilely tuned only by varying the number of printed layers.

ABSTRACT: To evaluate the stability of maxilla following orthognathic surgery, it is necessary to consider the positional change of various landmarks according to bone remodeling of the maxilla. This study aimed to evaluate the stability of the anterior nasal spine (ANS) as a reliable landmark after orthognathic surgery. Forty-seven patients with skeletal class III malocclusion who underwent bimaxillary orthognathic surgery were included. Skeletal changes were measured using cone-beam computerized tomography at 3 time points: preoperative (T0), 1-month postoperative (T1), and 12-month postoperative (T2). Linear changes of the 6 landmark points of the maxilla were measured in 3 directions: anteroposterior, vertical, and transverse. The data were analyzed with paired t tests, independent t tests, and multiple regression analysis. At 12-month postoperatively, the ANS showed mean (standard deviation) 1.23 (1.07) mm posterior movement ( P = 0.00), while other landmarks did not show positional changes, implying bony resorption of ANS. Multiple regression test showed surgical forward movements of ANS (T1-0) affect the postoperative backward changes (ß = -0.05, P < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between the surgical movement and postoperative change of ANS by Pearson correlation test ( r = -0.38, P < 0.05). The ANS is not a reliable measurement point in three-dimensional superimposition after orthognathic surgery. Therefore, in studying the stability and positional change pattern after LeFort I surgery, it is not recommended to use ANS as a reference point, as changes can occur in the measurement point itself.

ABSTRACT: Nerve injury especially inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) is the one of the complications that occur when the mandibular third molar (M3) is extracted and in case of high risk patients, coronectomy might be an alternative to tooth extraction. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze root migration and its influencing factors at 6 months after coronectomy in both 2- and 3-dimensions using periapical view and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). We analyzed 33 cases of root remnant after coronectomy and measured the amount of migration in CBCT. The following factors that could possibly affect root migration were also analyzed: age, gender, number of M3 roots, shape of M3s, Pell, and Gregory classification, mesiodistal (MD) angulation, buccolingual (BL) angulation, contact point with the second molar, root curvature, and complete removal of the coronal portion. Migration of greater than 2 mm was found in 64% of the roots in the 2-dimensional (2D) analysis, and the average root migration was 4.11 mm in the 3-dimensional (3D) analysis. The factors affecting migration were the root morphology, complete removal of the coronal portion, impaction depth, and MD angulation in the 2D analysis, and MD and BL angulation in the 3D analysis. Ensuring sufficient space for root migration especially considering angulation, depth and complete removal of the coronal portion might be important factors after coronectomy of the M3. Root remnant after coronectomy of M3 may migrate in young patients who has sufficient empty coronal space and this may reduce the nerve damage by the separation of IAN and M3.

Sensory dysfunction is the most serious complication that occurs after extracting lower third molars in close proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). Even experienced surgeons have difficulties in avoiding nerve damage when the root is anatomically adjacent to the nerve canal. A useful method for reducing nerve damage during extraction is to perform orthodontic extrusion, in which the distance between the nerve and the root increased after applying an orthodontic force on the third molar while extruding the tooth. Here, we report the case of a 37-year-old female who presented with a partially erupted left lower third molar and risk of IAN nerve damage because of close anatomical proximity between the nerve and root. She underwent extraction using a miniscrew placed in the maxilla and a routine orthodontic mechanism using a cross-arch elastic band that induced a 3-mm vertical eruption in the impacted third molar without using complex orthodontic devices. In addition, tilting the dental axis to the lingual side resolved the proximity between the IAN and the tooth, thereby allowing extraction to proceed without major complications.

OBJECTIVE: To compare postoperative positional changes in the mandibular proximal segment between the conventional orthognathic surgery (CS) and the surgery-first approach (SF) using intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) in patients with Class III malocclusion. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent bimaxillary surgery were divided into two groups according to the use of preoperative orthodontic treatment: CS group (n = 18) and SF group (n = 20). Skeletal changes in both groups were measured using computed tomography before (T0), 2 days after (T1), and 1 year after (T2) the surgery. Three-dimensional (3D) angular changes in the mandibular proximal segment, condylar position, and maxillomandibular landmarks were assessed. RESULTS: The mean amounts of mandibular setback and maxillary posterior impaction were similar in both groups. At T2, the posterior portion of the mandible moved upward in both groups. In the SF group, the anterior portion of the mandible moved upward by a mean distance of 0.9 ± 1.0 mm, which was statistically significant (p < 0.001). There were significant between-group differences in occlusal changes (p < 0.001) as well as in overjet and overbite. However, there were no significant between-group differences in proximal segment variables. CONCLUSIONS: Despite postoperative occlusal changes, positional changes in the mandibular proximal segment and the position of the condyles were similar between CS and SF, which suggested that SF using IVRO achieved satisfactory postoperative stability. If active physiotherapy is conducted, the proximal segment can be adapted in the physiological position regardless of the occlusal changes.

With proper guidance, virtual reality (VR) can provide psychiatric therapeutic strategies within a simulated environment. The visuo-haptic-based multimodal feedback VR solution has been developed to improve anxiety symptoms through immersive experience and feedback. A proof-of-concept study was performed to investigate this VR solution. Nine subjects recently diagnosed with panic disorder were recruited, and seven of them eventually completed the trial. Two VR sessions were provided to each subject. Depression, anxiety, and VR sickness were evaluated before and after each session. Although there was no significant effect of the VR sessions on psychiatric symptoms, we could observe a trend of improvement in depression, anxiety, and VR sickness. The VR solution was effective in relieving subjective anxiety, especially in panic disorder without comorbidity. VR sickness decreased over time. This study is a new proof-of-concept trial to evaluate the therapeutic effect of VR solutions on anxiety symptoms using visuo-haptic-based multimodal feedback simultaneously.

OBJECTIVE: The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is a measure used for the diagnosis of sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome, insomnia, and narcolepsy. Although a Korean version has been developed (the KESS), Korean lifestyle such as the floor culture and low driving rates has not been considered. We aim to develop and validate a modified KESS (mKESS) that reflects the Korean lifestyle. METHODS: The sample consisted of 795 healthy participants and 323 OSA patients. The mKESS was developed by modifying several questions to concern the floor culture (questions 1, 2, 6, and 7) and low driving rates (question 8). Feasibility of the modification was tested by comparing the KESS and mKESS using paired samples t-test and by examining internal consistency reliability. Then, mKESS scores of the OSA patients and general participants were compared to test its validity. RESULTS: Questions 1, 2, 7, and 8 were significantly different when comparing the performances of the general population on both scales. Especially, the mean scores on question 8 were significantly different in the non-driver group, but not in the driver group. Cronbach's alpha of the mKESS was relatively higher than that of the KESS. Total mKESS scores of the OSA patients were significantly higher than that of the general population. CONCLUSION: The mKESS is more universally applicable for the clinical evaluation of people that live in Korea. Results support that the mKESS can be administered to measure the average daytime sleep propensity of the Korean population as an alternative to the KESS.

The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is a highly pathogenic and zoonotic virus with a fatality rate in humans of over 35%. Although several vaccine candidates have been developed, there is still no clinically available vaccine for MERS-CoV. In this study, we developed two types of MERS-CoV vaccines: a recombinant adenovirus serotype 5 encoding the MERS-CoV spike gene (Ad5/MERS) and spike protein nanoparticles formulated with aluminum (alum) adjuvant. Next, we tested a heterologous prime-boost vaccine strategy, which compared priming with Ad5/MERS and boosting with spike protein nanoparticles and vice versa, with homologous prime-boost vaccination comprising priming and boosting with either spike protein nanoparticles or Ad5/MERS. Although both types of vaccine could induce specific immunoglobulin G against MERS-CoV, neutralizing antibodies against MERS-CoV were induced only by heterologous prime-boost immunization and homologous immunization with spike protein nanoparticles. Interestingly, Th1 cell activation was induced by immunization schedules including Ad5/MERS, but not by those including only spike protein nanoparticles. Heterologous prime-boost vaccination regimens including Ad5/MERS elicited simultaneous Th1 and Th2 responses, but homologous prime-boost regimens did not. Thus, heterologous prime-boost may induce longer-lasting immune responses against MERS-CoV because of an appropriate balance of Th1/Th2 responses. However, both heterologous prime-boost and homologous spike protein nanoparticles vaccinations could provide protection from MERS-CoV challenge in mice. Our results demonstrate that heterologous immunization by priming with Ad5/MERS and boosting with spike protein nanoparticles could be an efficient prophylactic strategy against MERS-CoV infection.

OBJECTIVE: The Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN) is a scale used to clinically evaluate disturbances in biological rhythm. In this study, we aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the BRIAN (K-BRIAN) in a Korean population. METHODS: A total of 181 participants, including 141 outpatients with bipolar disorder (BD; type I, 62; type II, 79) and 40 controls, were recruited. Construct validity was tested by comparing the mean K-BRIAN scores of the BD patients and control subjects. Concurrent validity was tested by evaluating the association between the K-BRIAN and the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). RESULTS: The mean K-BRIAN scores of the control subjects and patients with BD differed significantly (p<0.001). Particularly, the mean K-BRIAN score was considerably lower among control subjects (mean±standard deviation=35.00±8.88) than among patients with BD type I (41.19±12.10) and type II (50.18±13.73). The Cronbach's alpha for the K-BRIAN was 0.914. The K-BRIAN was found to correlate with the MEQ (r=-0.45, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The findings affirm that the K-BRIAN has good construct validity and internal consistency. This suggests that the K-BRIAN can be used to assess biological rhythms in the Korean population, especially for patients with mood disorder.

Inhibitor K562 (IK) protein was first isolated from the culture medium of K562, a leukemia cell line. It is known to be an inhibitory regulator of interferon-γ-induced major histocompatibility complex class (MHC) II expression. Previously, we found that transgenic (Tg) mice constitutively expressing truncated IK (tIK) showed reduced numbers of pathogenic Th1 and Th17 cells, which are known to be involved in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here, we investigated whether exogenous tIK protein has a therapeutic effect in arthritis in disease models and analyzed its mechanism. Exogenous tIK protein was produced in an insect expression system and applied to the collagen antibody-induced arthritis (CAIA) mouse disease model. Injection of tIK protein alleviated the symptoms of arthritis in the CAIA model and reduced Th1 and Th17 cell populations. In addition, treatment of cultured T cells with tIK protein induced expression of A20, a negative regulator of nuclear factor-κB (NFκB)-induced inflammation, and reduced expression of several transcription factors related to T cell activation. We conclude that exogenous tIK protein has the potential to act as a new therapeutic agent for RA patients, because it has a different mode of action to biopharmaceutical agents, such as tumor necrosis factor antagonists, that are currently used to treat RA.

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis manifests a range of clinical characteristics dependent upon the age of onset, the affected side, and the severity. When it occurs during development, mandibular growth is affected, resulting in severe retrusion or asymmetry as well as limitation of mandibular movements. Progressive asymmetric mandibular growth in unilateral ankylosis causes canting of the occlusal plane. In this case report, we present a successful temporomandibular joint reconstruction using transport distraction osteogenesis combined with camouflage orthodontic treatment for occlusal canting correction of a patient with unilateral temporomandibular joint ankylosis and severe facial asymmetry.
