RESUMO
Interstitial lung disease has been reported in association with numerous alkylating agents and other chemotherapeutic drugs. Chlorambucil has only rarely been implicated in this complication. We report a case of a 74-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia who received high-dose intermittent chlorambucil and prednisone every two weeks. Following several of these courses of therapy, respiratory distress occurred 9 to 12 days after the chlorambucil was given. During the final episode, open lung biopsy was performed and demonstrated typical changes of drug-induced pneumonitis, with interstitial infiltrates and fibrosis and proliferation of type II alveolar lining cells.

A cell line (MDCK) of dog kidney origin grows on a glass surface as a mosaic of epithelium with many multicellular hemispherical vesicles. The cells lining the blisters actively secrete into the cyst cavities. Suspensions of these cells injected intravenously in the chick embryo produce brain metastases resembling adenocarcinoma.

Three-dimensional growth of large populations of cells in vitro has been observed in the interstices of a matrix consisting of collagen-coated cellu lose sponge. The growth of Walker tumor 256 in this composite matrix is com pared with that found in a matrix composed of either cellulose sponge alone or collagen sponge alone. The composite matrix is superior to either one. Collagen coated cellulose sponge may provide a simple tool for the study of social interaction of cells in the formation of organized elementary tissue structures.
