RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of three different curing protocols based on different ratios of self-curing and light-curing periods on the bond strength and nanoleakage of fiber posts luted with dual-curing self-adhesive cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 48 single-root teeth were endodontically treated and obturated, and an 8-mm post space was prepared with dedicated drills. Specimens were randomly divided into two groups according to the self-adhesive cement employed: group 1 (G1) = PANAVIA SA Plus (Kuraray Noritake), and group 2 (G2) = Bifix SE (VOCO). The specimens were further divided into three subgroups (n = 8 each) according to the light-curing protocol applied: no light-curing (SG1), 20 seconds of light-curing 20 seconds after cement injection (SG2), and 20 seconds of light-curing 120 seconds after cement injection (SG3). Slices of 1-mm thickness were prepared for the pushout test and nanoleakage analyses of the coronal and apical regions after 24 hours of storage in artificial saliva. Results were statistically analyzed with three-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests. Statistical significance was set for P < .05. RESULTS: Three-way ANOVA analysis showed that the factors of cement (P = .02) and curing protocol (P < .001) had a significant influence on bond strength. Tukey post hoc test reported that light-curing 120 seconds after injection showed higher bond strength compared to both no light-curing and photoactivation after 20 seconds. CONCLUSION: To achieve the highest bond strength with self-adhesive cements, photoactivation with a 120-second delay after mixing is required. There is no difference between light-curing immediately and light-curing 20 seconds after mixing.

OBJECTIVE: To find out how the use of new acrylic full upper removable dentures changes the perception of four basic tastes: sweetness, sourness, saltiness and bitterness, and to evaluate the influence of age and gender. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was performed in LSMU MA Faculty of Odontology Department of Prosthodontics during 2017-09-01 - 2018-02-01. All the patients for whom new acrylic upper removable dentures were made were invited to take part. 30 patients have taken part. Sixteen solutions for basic tastes: sweetness, sourness, saltiness and bitterness; were made. The patients were examined without and with their new dentures. The patients were told to rinse an unknown solution starting from the lowest concentration and to identify the taste. Data analysis was performed using SPSS® (IBM®, Armonk, USA) version 23. RESULTS: Patients with full upper removable dentures felt sweet (p=0.002) and sour (p=0.000) taste weaker than without them, the same tendency was observed with bitter (p=0.063) and salty (p=0.059) taste. The time required to identify the taste was longer with removable dentures than without them (p<0.05). Identification of saltiness became weaker both with and without removable dentures as the age of the patients increased (p<0.05). Bitterness was identified better by women than men both with and without removable dentures (p<0.05). Age and gender had no influence on other basic tastes (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study confirm the presumption that acrylic full upper removable dentures weaken the taste perception of the patients.

RESUMO

AIM: To review all of the possible uses for maxillary sinus lateral wall bony window in an open maxillary sinus lift procedure and to evaluate the influence of each method to the rate of sinus membrane perforations. METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed of randomized control studies in English identified in MEDLINE (PubMed) and Cochrane online databases, published between 2007.09.01 and 2017.09.01. Surgeries had to be performed in vivo, for patients over 18 years old. A study had to have at least 10 sinus lifting procedures, had to detail how the bony window was used and had to report the number of Schneiderian membrane perforations. RESULTS: 922 publications were found, out of which 68 were selected for qualitative assessment. 29 of them were selected for quantitative assessment. 4 distinct uses for bony window were found: bony window is elevated into the sinus cavity under the membrane; removed and discarded; repositioned to its original position after the surgery; used as a graft material for sinus lift. CONCLUSIONS: there is a statistically significant difference of sinus membrane perforations between different uses of the lateral bony window of an open sinus lift procedure. However, due to the lack of publications that investigate the effects of different bony window usage methods, clinical recommendations cannot be drawn from current data.
