RESUMO

Reported was an investigation of the effect of vitamin E (Vit.E) and corn oil on semen traits of male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). From 8 to 20 wk of age, birds were raised on corn-based diets supplemented with corn oil (0 and 3%) and Vit.E (National Research Council (NRC) recommended 25mg/kg/day/dry matter and 150 mg/kg/day/dry matter) in a 2×2 factorial manner. The diet was supplemented with corn oil and Vit.E (E2C2) which provided additional n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the form of 20:4n-6 and 22:4n-6 in spermatozoa phospholipid. The left testes weights were increased (P<0.01) in groups that received Vit.E in the diet (3.95 and 4.12 g, respectively) (P=0.03) and combined testes weight was the greatest in E2C2 group (7.57g) (P=0.02). Semen volume increased throughout the experiment in the E2C2 group. E2C1 and E2C2 birds had the greatest (90.05% and 92.1%, respectively) live sperm percent by comparison with other groups. The susceptibility of semen to lipid peroxidation in vitro was increased in quail fed E1C1 and E1C2, but was reduced when 150 mg Vit.E kg/day/dry matter feed was provided in the diet. The amount of Vit.E in the seminal plasma of E1C1 and E1C2 groups was (P<0.01) less than that in the other two groups (E2C1 and E2C2). From this study, it may be concluded that increasing diet n-6/n-3 ratio can be beneficial for semen traits, however, this application increased sperm peroxidation sensitivity but it can be controlled by inclusion of antioxidant such as Vit.E (150 mg/kg/day/dry matter) to diet.

RESUMO

1. Genetic parameters were estimated in a base population of a closed experimental strain of fowl. Data were obtained on 21 245 Iranian native hens (breeding centre for Fars province) subject to 8 successive generations of selection. This population had been selected for body weight at 12 weeks of age (BW12) and egg number during the first 12 weeks of the laying period (EN), mean egg weight (EW) at weeks 28, 30 and 32, and age at sexual maturity (ASM). 2. The method of multi-traits restricted maximum likelihood with an animal model was used to estimate genetic parameters. Resulting heritabilities for BW12, EN, EW and ASM were 0.68 +/- 0.02, 0.40 +/- 0.02, 0.64 +/- 0.02 and 0.49 +/- 0.02, respectively. 3. Genetic correlations between BW12 and EN, EW and ASM were 0.11 +/- 0.33, 0.54 +/- 0.21 and -0.12 +/- 0.03, respectively. Genetic correlations between EN and EW and ASM were -0.09 +/- 0.03 and -0.85 +/- 0.01, respectively, while between EW and ASM, it was 0.05 +/- 0.03. 4. The overall predicted genetic gains, after 7 generations of selection, estimated by the regression coefficients of the breeding value on generation number were equal to 22.7, 0.17, 0.04 and -1.38, for BW12, EN, EW and ASM, respectively. 5. A pedigree file of 21 245 female and male birds was used to calculate inbreeding coefficients and their influence on production and reproduction traits. Average inbreeding coefficients for all birds, inbred birds, female birds and male birds were 0.048, 0.673, 0.055 and 0.047%, respectively. Regression coefficients of BW12, ASM, EN and EW on inbreeding coefficient for all birds were equal to 0.51 +/- 0.001, 0.31 +/- 0.003, -0.51 +/- 0.003 and 0.03 +/- 0.001, respectively.

Genetic parameters were estimated in base population of a closed experimental strain fowl, from data issued from 13 successive generations of selection. Genetic correlations between EN and EW and ASM were -0.26 and-0.77, respectively, while between EW and ASM, it was 0.20. The overall predicted genetic gains, after 13 generations of selection, estimated by the regression coefficients of the breeding value on generation number were equal to 9.55, 0.99, 0.05 and -1.66, for BW12, EN, EW and ASM, respectively.

RESUMO

(1) Genetic distances and heterozygosity were determined in 5 Iranian native chickens: Dashtyary, Lary, Marandy, Naked neck and Common breed, using three blood group systems (A, B and D) and 4 serum protein loci (albumin, transferrin, alkaline phosphatase and esterase). (2) The highest D(A) and D(S) were obtained between Dashtyary and Lary breeds. (3) The average heterozygosity for each breed in all loci ranged from 0.330 for Dashtyary to 0.370 for Common breed. (4) Dendrograms based on an unweighted pair-group method using an arithmetic average (UPGMA) showed two distinct clusters. One cluster included Dashtyary and the other contained the remaining 4 breeds.

RESUMO

1. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of early feed restriction (FR) on immunocompetence of Ross and Arian chickens with separated sexes under heat stress (HS) conditions. 2. Chickens consumed feed ad libitum (AL) or were restricted on alternate days from 11 to 20 d of age. From 35 to 41 d of age, the HS groups were exposed to a high ambient temperature of 39 +/- 1 degreesC for 7 h each day, while the thermoneutral groups (TN) were at 33 degrees C. 3. At 21 and 42d of age, the percentage of CD4+ (helper T cells) and CD8+ (cytotoxic T cells) were determined by flow cytometry. Antibody response to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) and heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio were determined on d 21 and 42. 4. On d 21, FR elevated the CD4+, antibody titre and H/L ratio, but it decreased the CD8+ T cells. On d 42, HS decreased CD4+, CD8+, and antibody titre, but it increased H/L ratio. Under TN conditions, FR chickens had higher CD4+ than AL chickens. On d 42, FR/HS chickens had higher CD4+ and antibody titre, but they had lower CD8+ and H/L ratio than AL/HS chickens. 5. On d 42, the TN-Ross strain had lower CD4+, but they had higher CD8+ and antibody titres than the TN-Arian strain. On d 42, the HS-Arian strain had higher antibody titres and a lower H/L ratio than the HS-Ross strain. 6. Male chickens had higher CD4+, CD8+, antibody titres and H/L ratios 25 in all treatment groups. 7. In conclusion, FR early in life reduced some of the negative effects of the heat stress on the immune system of broiler chickens when exposed to high environmental temperatures later in life.
