Numerous herbal products have been the subject of research regarding their potential role in cancer prevention or adjuvant therapy. Pistacia atlantica and its main phytochemicals have garnered significant attention for their potential anti-cancer effects. The study aimed to assess the growth inhibitory effects of P. atlantica essential oil (PAEO) on MKN-45 and AGS cells. This study quantified the volatile compounds in PAEO using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Subsequently, MKN-45 and AGS cells were treated with varying concentrations of PAEO (5%, 2.5%, 1.25%, 0.625%, 0.3125%, 0.156%, 0.0781%, 0.0391%, 0.0195%) for 24 h. Cell viability was evaluated through the MTT assay. The impact of PAEO on gene expression was investigated by quantifying the mRNA levels of Bax and Bcl2 in the various experimental groups using quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis. Additionally, flow cytometry was utilized to evaluate apoptosis in the treated cells. The analysis of PAEO revealed that α-pinene was the predominant monoterpene, constituting 87.9% of the oil composition. The cytotoxic effects of PAEO were evaluated, and it was found that the oil significantly reduced the viability of MKN-45 and AGS cells. The IC50 for MKN-45 cells was determined to be 1.94 × 10-3% after 24 h of treatment, while for AGS cells the IC50 was 2.8 × 10-3% after 24 h. Additionally, the research revealed that PAEO triggered a notable rise in apoptotic cells in both AGS and MKN-45 cell lines. Moreover, at the molecular level, the findings indicated an increase in Bax expression and a decrease in Bcl2 mRNA expression, providing further evidence of the induction of apoptosis in both MKN-45 and AGS cell lines following PAEO treatment. The findings of this study offer evidence supporting the cytotoxic effects of PAEO on gastric cancer cell lines by promoting apoptosis. The findings suggest that PAEO may offer potential as a therapeutic candidate in managing and treating gastric cancer.

A significant portion of human cancers are caused by oncoviruses (12%-25%). Oncoviruses employ various strategies to promote their replication and induce tumourigenesis in host cells, one of which involves modifying the gene expression patterns of the host cells, leading to the rewiring of genes and resulting in significant changes in cellular processes and signalling pathways. In recent studies, a specific mode of gene regulation known as circular RNA (circRNA)-mediated competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks has emerged as a key player in this context. CircRNAs, a class of non-coding RNA molecules, can interact with other RNA molecules, such as mRNAs and microRNAs (miRNAs), through a process known as ceRNA crosstalk. This interaction occurs when circRNAs, acting as sponges, sequester miRNAs, thereby preventing them from binding to their target mRNAs and modulating their expression. By rewiring the host cell genome, oncoviruses have the ability to manipulate the expression and activity of circRNAs, thereby influencing the ceRNA networks that can profoundly impact cellular processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and immune responses. This review focuses on a comprehensive evaluation of the latest findings on the involvement of virus-induced reprogramming of host circRNA-mediated ceRNA networks in the development and pathophysiology of human viral cancers, including cervical cancer, gastric cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Kaposi's sarcoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and diffuse large B cell lymphoma. Understanding these mechanisms can improve our knowledge of how oncoviruses contribute to human tumourigenesis and identify potential targets for developing optimised therapies and diagnostic tools for viral cancers.

Metastasis is a significant clinical challenge responsible for cancer mortality and non-response to treatment. However, the molecular mechanisms driving metastasis remain unclear, limiting the development of efficient diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Recent breakthroughs in cancer biology have discovered a group of small non-coding RNAs called tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs), which play a critical role in the metastatic behavior of various tumors. tRFs are produced from cleavage modifications of tRNAs and have different functional classes based on the pattern of these modifications. They perform post-transcriptional regulation through microRNA-like functions, displacing RNA-binding proteins, and play a role in translational regulation by inducing ribosome synthesis, translation initiation, and epigenetic regulation. Tumor cells manipulate tRFs to develop and survive the tumor mass, primarily by inducing metastasis. Multiple studies have demonstrated the potential of tRFs as therapeutic, diagnostic, and prognostic targets for tumor metastasis. This review discusses the production and function of tRFs in cells, their aberrant molecular contributions to the metastatic environment, and their potential as promising targets for anti-metastasis treatment strategies.

Exosomes are a type of extracellular vesicle that contains bioactive molecules that can be secreted by most cells. Nevertheless, the content of these cells differs depending on the cell from which they originate. The exosome plays a crucial role in modulating intercellular communication by conveying molecular messages to neighboring or distant cells. Cancer-derived exosomes can transfer several types of molecules into the tumor microenvironment, including high levels of microRNA (miRNA). These miRNAs significantly affect cell proliferation, angiogenesis, apoptosis resistance, metastasis, and immune evasion. Increasing evidence indicates that exosomal miRNAs (exomiRs) are crucial to regulating cancer resistance to apoptosis. In cancer cells, exomiRs orchestrate communication channels between them and their surrounding microenvironment, modulating gene expression and controlling apoptosis signaling pathways. This review presents an outline of present-day knowledge of the mechanisms that affect target cells and drive cancer resistance to apoptosis. Also, our study looks at the regulatory role of exomiRs in mediating intercellular communication between tumor cells and surrounding microenvironmental cells, specifically stromal and immune cells, to evade therapy-induced apoptosis.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the barriers, challenges, and facilitators in receiving prosthetic services in people with lower limb amputation during Covid-19 pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this qualitative study, we conducted in-depth semistructured face-to-face interviews with individuals with lower limb amputation who needed prosthetic services during Covid-19 pandemic. We discussed about challenges and barriers that the participants had encountered during this period. The collected data were analyzed using a conceptual framework. RESULTS: Six broad themes of availability, accessibility, acceptability, affordability, accommodation, and awareness emerged from the analysis. Staff shortage, lack of remote services, accommodation, insurance and governmental support, and cost of services were the main concerns. Moreover, long waiting lists, postponed referrals, noncompliance with Covid-19 protocols and preventive measures, and lockdowns were the other important concerns that were noted. In addition, unsatisfactory services in hometown, distance to capital, transportation permit in lockdowns, traffic jam, and public transport problems were other reasons of service not being accessible. The positive aspects were the facilitators such as having home visits, social work and charity, and using private drive services. CONCLUSION: It seems that after the beginning of Covid-19 pandemic, people with lower limb amputation have faced more drastic challenges in accessing and receiving prosthetic services than in the prepandemic situations.

Background: This qualitative study was designed to investigate parental adherence to cranial remolding orthotic (CRO) treatment of infants with positional cranial deformities. Methods: A qualitative content analysis was employed in this study. Researchers sought to find parental behavior while using a CRO for their infant with cranial deformity. Through in-depth and in-person interviews, researchers collected data from 22 participants using semi-structured questions regarding adherence to CRO treatment. Data were examined for patterns until saturation occurred, yielding categories that focused on the parents' main barriers and facilitators. Results: Two general themes of "potential barriers to CRO treatment adherence" and "potential facilitators to CRO treatment adherence" were extracted from 12 subthemes of parental burden, transportation, availability of CRO services in hometown, financial responsibility, maternal/paternal attachment attitudes, CRO-related problems, others feedback, adjustment to the treatment, motivation and self-confidence, aesthetic satisfaction, communication with orthotist, and wife's empathy/spousal support. Conclusion: Getting time off work, transportation to the orthotics' clinic, the lack of medical insurance coverage for CRO, reduced physical contact between parents and their child, and getting negative feedback from others were the most reported challenges. However, overcoming the initial difficulties and adjustment to the treatment with CRO, the high motivation of parents during therapy, an orthosis with good fitting and minor complications, a strong relationship between the parents and orthotist, and the father's companionship were revealed to facilitate the treatment process and increase adherence of treatment with CRO.

Recent events have raised concerns about the outbreak of a pandemic by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). An infection caused by a virus can provoke an inflammatory reaction, which can result in severe lung damage, failure of several organs, and death. The unique genetic makeup of each individual may be a component in the development of each of these responses. In this context, genetic variants of the genes linked to the invasion of the virus into the host's body can be analyzed. Various elements have a function in viral entry. ACE2 is used by SARS-CoV-2 as a receptor to enter the cell. TMPRSS2 is then responsible for cutting the virus into its components. In addition, lung damage occurs when there is an imbalance between ACE1 and ACE2. Another component that plays a significant role in virus penetration is called IFITM3, which is created as a reaction to interferon. This protein prevents viruses in the Coronaviridae family from entering cells. This study aimed to analyze DNA polymorphisms in the ACE2, ACE1, TMPRSS2, and IFITM3 genes. Findings showed certain polymorphisms appear to be associated with the severity of the disease, including respiratory, coronary, and neurological disorders. The results also indicated that certain polymorphisms were protective against this virus. Varying populations have a different frequency of high-risk polymorphisms, so different treatment and preventative techniques must be implemented. Additional population studies should be conducted in this region to reduce the incidence of COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality.

PURPOSE: Children's and adolescents' level of activity, the type of activity, and other features are special to them and can result in unique experiences with lower-limb prosthesis. The specific objective of this study was to explore the lived experience of children and adolescents with lower-limb loss (LLL) who used a prosthesis. METHODS: We used a descriptive qualitative study design and in-depth, semistructured, face-to-face interviews. Accordingly, 35 participants, including children and adolescents with LLL who used a prosthesis, their parents, and prosthetists, were interviewed. The collected data were analyzed thematically. RESULTS: One hundred sixty-eight codes about the experiences of children, parent(s), and prosthetists were extracted from the transcripts and categorized into 32 subthemes. Finally, 7 broad themes including suitability, provoke reactions, intrinsic nature, infrastructures, the school, availability, and parenting role were extracted. CONCLUSION: The experiences of children and adolescents with lower-limb prosthesis are specific as each may face unique challenges and deal with different difficulties. In this study that has been conducted in a developing country, the main challenges faced by children using lower-limb prosthesis and their parents are the prosthetic components, social reactions, long distance, and costs of services. Moreover, designing a more natural prosthesis and gait training for children with LLL were the most important issues faced by prosthetists. However, close relationships with friends and family members, and children's amazing ability to adapt can aid in facilitating prosthetic management.

The current study was carried out systematically by conducting a review of the literature. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature to determine the effects of brace wearing on sagittal parameters in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). In this study, PubMed/MEDLINE (National Library of Medicine), Scopus, Ovid, CINAHL, PEDro, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Library were accessed and searched using the patient, intervention, comparison, outcome, and study design model. We included studies that looked at the effects of brace treatment on sagittal spinopelvic parameters in AIS patients over the age of 18. The studies were chosen for their cross-sectional, retrospective, or prospective observational designs, and they were published in English. Review articles, case reports, case study designs, and conference abstracts were excluded from consideration. The methodological quality of the remaining articles was assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. A total of 12 studies were chosen, and 995 participants were evaluated, with 3 (25%) and 9 (75%) having high and moderate quality, respectively. The studies were classified based on the length of follow-up. Long-term, short-term, and immediate effects of brace wearing on sagittal spinopelvic parameters were reported in four, five, and three studies, respectively. The results of nine studies showed a significant decrease in Cobb angle after wearing the brace, which contradicted the findings of the other two. The cervical and sagittal pelvic parameters, thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL), spinopelvic parameters, and sagittal balance were all evaluated in the intended studies, yielding varying results. According to the available literature, wearing a brace flattens the TK and LL. According to this systematic review, brace treatment may affect sagittal spinopelvic parameters in adolescents with AIS, particularly in TK and LL. The cervical and pelvic parameters yielded inconclusive results. This study backs up the idea that brace design and structure can influence sagittal parameter changes. The limitations of this study include different methods of parameter measurement, variations in the brace types and wear time, varying follow-up duration, and differences in participant characteristics.

We studied the speech sound abilities of preterm (PT) children. Thirty-one PT and twenty-nine full term (FT) children were recruited. Speech abilities were assessed in single word, story retelling, oral-motor, and intelligibility. PT group had poorer outcomes (Mean = 25.77, SD = 17.19) than FT ones (Mean = 5.9, SD = 4.97) for single word (p < 0.001). They obtained poorer results (Mean = 9.65, SD = 7.85) than FT peers (Mean = 2.95, SD = 3.34) in story retelling (p = 0.002) and intelligibility (Man-Whitney U = 89.50, p = 0.02). They obtained lower values for diadochokesis/patuku/(p < 0.001), isolated (p = 0.001), and sequenced movements (p = 0.02) but not for diadochokesis/patukejk/(p = 0.12). Significant values of correlation were found among single word scores with birth weight (r = -.54, p < .001) and gestational age (r = -0.67, p < .001) and story retelling scores with birth weight (r = -0.40, p = .013) and gestational age (r = -0.64, p < .001). The associations of single word score and maternal (r = -0.02, p = .85) and paternal education (r = -0.10, p = .41) were not significant. No significant relationships were obtained between story retelling score and maternal (r = 0.16, p = .34) and paternal education (r = 0.09, p = .59). The significant values were obtained for associations of intelligibility with isolated (r = 0.54, p = .001), sequenced movements (r = 0.59, p < .001), and diadochokesis/patukejk/(r = 0.39, p = .016) but not significant for intelligibility and diadochokesis/patuku/(r = 0.25, p = .13). Findings implied that speech abilities are weaker in PT children.

Cancer is responsible for about one in six deaths in the world. Conventional cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery are associated with drug poisoning and poor prognosis. Thanks to advances in RNA delivery and target selection, new cancer medicines are now conceivable to improve the quality of life and extend the lives of cancer patients. Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) and siRNAs are the most important tools in RNA therapies. Locked Nucleic Acids (LNAs) are one of the newest RNA analogs, exhibiting more affinity to binding, sequence specificity, thermal stability, and nuclease resistance due to their unique properties. Assays using LNA are also used in molecular diagnostic methods and provide accurate and rapid mutation detection that improves specificity and sensitivity. This study aims to review the special properties of LNA oligonucleotides that make them safe and effective antisense drugs for cancer treatment by controlling gene expression. Following that, we go over all of the molecular detection methods and cancer treatment antisense tactics that are possible with LNA technology.

Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common endocrine cancer, accounting for 1.7% of all cancer cases. It has been reported that the existing approach to diagnosing TC is problematic. Therefore, it is essential to develop molecular biomarkers to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis. This study aimed to screen hub lncRNAs in the ceRNA network (ceRNET) connected to TC formation and progression based on the overall survival rate. In this study, first, RNA-seq data from the GDC database were collected. A package called edgeR in R programming language was then used to obtain differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), miRNAs (DEmiRNAs), and mRNAs (DEmRNAs) in TC patients' samples compared to normal samples. Second, DEmRNAs were analyzed for their functional enrichment. Third, to identify RNAs associated with overall survival, the overall survival of these RNAs was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier plotter database to create a survival associated with the ceRNA network (survival-related ceRNET). Next, the GeneMANIA plugin was used to construct a PPI network to better understand survival-related DEmRNA interactions. The survival ceRNET was then visualized with the Cytoscape software, and hub genes, including hub lncRNAs and hub mRNAs, were identified using the CytoHubba plugin. We found 45 DElncRNAs, 28 DEmiRNAs, and 723 DEmRNAs among thyroid tumor tissue and non-tumor tissue samples. According to KEGG, GO and DO analyses, 723 DEmRNAs were mainly enriched in cancer-related pathways. Importantly, the results found that ten DElncRNAs, four DEmiRNAs, and 68 DEmRNAs are associated with overall survival. In this account, the PPI network was constructed for 68 survival-related DEmRNAs, and ADAMTS9, DTX4, and CLDN10 were identified as hub genes. The ceRNET was created by combining six lncRNAs, 109 miRNAs, and 22 mRNAs related to survival using Cytoscape. in this network, ten hub RNAs were identified by the CytoHubba plugin, including mRNAs (CTXND1, XKRX, IGFBP2, ENTPD1, GALNT7, ADAMTS9) and lncRNAs (AC090673.1, AL162511.1, LINC02454, AL365259.1). This study suggests that three lncRNAs, including AL162511.1, AC090673.1, and AL365259.1, could be reliable diagnostic biomarkers for TC. The findings of this study provide a basis for future studies on the therapeutic potential of these lncRNAs.

Stringent lockdowns have been one of the defining features of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns have brought about drastic changes in living styles, including increased residential occupancy and telework practices predicted to last long. The variation in occupancy pattern and energy use needs to be assessed at the household level. Consequently, the new occupancy times will impact the performance of energy efficiency measures. To address these gaps, this work uses a real case study, a two-story residential building in the Okanagan Valley (British Columbia, Canada). Further, steady-state building energy simulations are performed on the HOT2000 tool to evaluate the resiliency of energy efficiency measures under a full lockdown. Three-year monitored energy data is analyzed to study the implications of COVID-19 lockdowns on HVAC and non-HVAC loads at a monthly temporal scale. The results show a marked change in energy use patterns and a higher increase in May 2020 compared to the previous two years. Calibrated energy models built on HOT2000 are then used to study the impacts of pre-COVID-19 (old normal occupancy) and post-COVID-19 (new normal occupancy) on energy upgrades performance. The simulations show that under higher occupancy times, the annual electricity use increased by 16.4%, while natural gas use decreased by 7.6%. The results indicate that overall residential buildings following pre-COVID-19 occupancy schedules had higher energy-saving potential than those with new normal occupancy. In addition, the variation in occupancy and stakeholder preferences directly impact the ranking of energy efficiency measures. Furthermore, this study identifies energy efficiency measures that provide flexibility for the decision-makers by identifying low-cost options feasible under a range of occupancy schedules.

This study aimed to develop a screening test for children suspected of developmental language disorders (DLD). The study was conducted in six steps. In the first two steps, we collected 34 sentences for the sentence repetition (SR) subtest, and 40 non-words for the non-word repetition (NWR) subtest, respectively. Experts determined the content validity in the third step and 19 sentences and 19 non-words were selected. In the fourth step, we draw simple pictures for the SR subtest. In the fifth step, two pilot studies were conducted on 30 and 35 Persian-speaking children aged 4.5-5.5 years, respectively. After calculating the discrimination index of the items, we removed items with the discrimination index less than 0.3. Nineteen sentences and 14 non-words remained in this step. In the sixth step, 92 typically developing (TD) children aged 4.5-5.5 and 10 children suspected of DLD were recruited. Then, we removed some items and evaluated the construct validity and reliability of the final form of the Persian Grammar-Phonology Screening Test (PGPST).The final form of the PGPST consisted of 16 sentences, and 11 non-words were developed. The correlation between the two subtests was 0.29. Children suspected of DLD in SR (p = .001) and NWR (p = .007) performed significantly worse than the TD children. The correlation between the two administrations of the test was 0.74 and 0.71, respectively, for SR and NWR. Cronbach's alpha was also 0.84 and 0.86 for the SR and NWR subtests, respectively. The PGPST is a quick and brief screening test with acceptable validity and reliability.

PURPOSE: The efficacy of intraperitoneal (IP) and incisional use of local anesthesia in laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a promising subject regarding post-operative pain control. In this study, we aim to compare these methods using lidocaine as the local anesthetic. METHODS: This study was a double-blinded randomized controlled trial. Eighty-two patients, candidates for laparoscopic cholecystectomy, were included. Participants were randomly divided into two equal groups; the instillation group and the infiltration group. In the instillation group, a 2% lidocaine ampule was instilled in the gallbladder bed after removal of the gallbladder. In the infiltration group, a 2% lidocaine ampule was injected subcutaneously into the port sites before making the incisions for the insertion of laparoscopic ports. RESULTS: The mean age of patients were 41.66 ± 14.44 and 48.05 ± 17.03 years in the instillation and infiltration groups, respectively. The etiologies recorded in this study were: acute calculous cholecystitis (29.3%), symptomatic gallstone (68.3%), and polyp (2.4). The pain severity, evaluated at six different times, from immediately after awakening from anesthesia to 24 h after the operation, was not significantly different between the two groups (p-value = 0.329). Consumption of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and narcotics, were statistically lower in the instillation group (p-value = 0.013 and 0.003, respectively). However, hospitalization period, time spent to return to normal bowel movements and oral diet, and postoperative nausea/vomiting were not significantly significant between the groups. CONCLUSION: IP instillation of lidocaine following laparoscopic cholecystectomy offers post-operative pain relief and is associated with lower analgesic consumption in comparison to subcutaneous injection of this agent at the port site.

Objectives: Cochlear synaptopathy is a common cause of auditory disorders in which glutamate over-activation occurs. Modulating glutamatergic pathways has been proposed to down-regulate post-synaptic excitation. Materials and Methods: 12-guinea pigs as sham and test groups were exposed to a 4-kHz noise at 104 dB SPL, for 2 hr. Pre-exposure intra-tympanic injection with LY354740 and normal saline 9% was applied in the test and sham groups. The amplitude growth of ABR-wave-I and wave-III latency shift with noise were considered in pre- and post-exposure times. The synapses were observed by transmission electron-microscopy. Results: ABR thresholds recovered 1-week post-exposure in both groups. The reduction of wave-I amplitude at 4, 6, and 8 kHz were statistically different between pre- and 1- day post-exposure and recovered mostly in the sham group. The amount of latency shift in masked ABR was different between pre- and all post-exposure, and the response could not be detected at higher than 50 dB SL noise. However, the response detectability increased to 60 dB SL noise, and the significance of differences between pre- and post-exposure persisted only at the high level of noise in the test group. In electron-microscopy of sham samples, the size of the ribbon was larger, spherical with an irregularity, and hollow. The post-synaptic density was thicker and missed its flat orientation. Conclusion: The higher slope of the ABR-wave I amplitude, the more tolerance of noise in masked ABR, concomitant with the histological finding that revealed less synaptic damage, confirmed the therapeutic effect of LY354740 in cochlear synaptopathy.

Background. Occupation based practice (OBP) is the central core of occupational therapy. Therefore, measuring its usage and influencing factors seems necessary. Purpose. To develop and validate the occupation based practice measure (OBPM). Method. OBPM was developed in two phases: (I) following a qualitative study, a literature review was conducted. The item pool was revised by expert panel; (II) The face, content, construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were assessed. Findings. The 142 items derived through the qualitative study were integrated with the 42 items derived from the literature review. The item pool was reduced by expert panel to 78 items and finalized to 37 items through face, content, and construct validity. Cronbach's alpha was greater than 0.70 and intra-class correlation coefficient showed good to excellent reliability. Implications. OBPM is a valid and reliable questionnaire that evaluates the occupational therapists' knowledge, attitudes, interest, usage, and contextual factors influencing the OBP.

BACKGROUND: Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is common in traditional singers and can lead to serious complications, but there is inconclusive evidence about how MTD should be treated in singers as professional voice users. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of breathing exercises combined with manual therapy versus breathing exercises and manual therapy on voice quality in traditional singers suffering from MTD. METHODS: In this blinded randomized clinical trial, 60 patients with MTD were randomly allocated to four groups: (1) breathing exercises, (2) manual therapy, (3) combined intervention (CI) and (4) control. Patients received treatments for 13 sessions, once per week. Treatment effects were assessed in terms of primary outcome measures: (1) breathing performance, measured by maximum phonation time (MPT) and (2) laryngeal function, measured by Stroboscopy Evaluation Rating Form (SERF). Secondary outcome measure was patient's self-perceived voice handicap, measured by Persian version of Singing Voice Handicap Index (SVHIp). All outcome variables were measured before and after treatment. The between group comparisons on MPT and SVHIp score were investigated using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test was used for between group comparisons of SERF items. RESULTS: Three treatment groups had improved regarding breathing performance, laryngeal function and voice handicap over the time (P < 0.01). The improvements achieved in all outcomes were significantly greater in the CI group than those of the breathing exercises, manual therapy and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: This randomized controlled trial showed that the combination of breathing exercises and manual therapy significantly improved the laryngeal function, breathing performance and voice handicap in traditional singers suffering from MTD. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PURPOSE: To translate and culturally adapt the original English version of the 24-item Early-Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) to the Persian language as well as assess its reliability and validity. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Early-onset scoliosis (EOS) patients with progressive curves require active treatments, such as serial elongation- derotation-flexion casting, bracing, and surgery, which are stressful and expensive. In order to evaluate the impact of EOS and its treatment strategies, it is important to consider the patients and their parents' quality of life as the clinical and radiological parameters. The EOSQ-24 is a parent-based measure that evaluates the health-related quality of life of patients with EOS and their caregivers/parents. Similar to other widely used questionnaires, EOSQ-24 needs to be translated into other languages to make it usable in populations from different cultures and societies. METHODS: We evaluated the translation and back translation of the EOSQ-24 and made the required revisions as per the analysis performed by the expert committee and an international guideline to adapt it for use in this study. Thereafter, we recruited 100 EOS patients in order to evaluate its reliability and validity. The reliability was assessed with internal consistency. Convergent validity was assessed by comparing the scores of the EOSQ-24 and the 22-item Scoliosis Research Society Questionnaire (SRS-22r). Finally, the known groups validity was assessed as per patient's sex, curve magnitude, and treatment type. RESULTS: The Persian EOSQ-24 demonstrated very good internal consistency (Cronbach's α=0.88). All the items had an acceptable corrected item-total correlation (>0.3). Further, the EOSQ-24 and the SRS-22r scores (p <0.001) were significantly correlated. The EOSQ-24 could discriminate patients with different curve magnitudes. CONCLUSIONS: The Persian EOSQ-24 can serve as a disease-specific instrument with strong validity and reliability in the evaluation of EOS patients. Its applicability in other Persian-speaking countries and regions of the world needs to be investigated further.

Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) are the most common spinal deformities in adolescents aged 10 to 16. During the past 50 years, brace treatment has been suggested as the most common nonsurgical treatment for AIS and SK. The brace efficacy strongly depends on wearing time. Also, previous studies indicated that patients with spinal deformities undergoing brace treatment experience deformity-related emotional distress. This study aimed to comprehend the experiences of braces-treated adolescents during school time using a qualitative approach. Methods: This descriptive qualitative research was used with an interpretative framework and enlisted the help of children with spinal deformities who have been prescribed "brace wearing." This study was conducted using semi-structured, face-to-face, in-depth interviews and phone conversations from September 2020 to May 2021. Additionally, content analysis was employed. Results: A total of 64 participants were interviewed, including 32 adolescents with spinal deformities under brace treatment and their parents (27 mothers, and 5 fathers). Three main categories-concerns, actual problems, received support-6 subcategories, and 278 codes were discovered following data analysis about participants' experiences. Conclusion: Special school-based programs are required for such tortious conditions. This qualitative study motivates a better understanding of these special children and their hidden problems and suggests developing a supportive protocol.
