RESUMO

The current study mainly concentrates on the photocatalytic activity of composite nanomaterial of BiVO4 (BVO), NiFe2O4 (NFO), and BiVO4-NiFe2O4 (BVO-NFO) under visible light. Among these, BVO-NFO composite degrades crystal violet dye within 60 min with a percentage degradation of 95.65% under visible light illumination. The BVO-NFO composite exhibits better photodegradation performance, which can be attributed to the effective light absorption and reduced recombination of the photoexcited charge carriers. Additionally, by applying a magnetic field, the BVO-NFO composite can be magnetically recovered by using the magnet for subsequent recycling. The synthesized composite was characterized using optical techniques like X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The effect of dye, before and after degradation, on vital organs of fish species was examined such as fish gill (pulmonary-toxicity), fish liver (hepato-toxicity), fish kidney (renal toxicity), fish brain (neural toxicity), and fish muscle (myopathy). This work offers a clear and practical method for designing a highly crystalline semiconductor photocatalyst for dye degradation and the remediation of industrial wastewater.

RESUMO

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is one of the best bismuth-based semiconducting materials because of its narrow band gap energy, good visible light absorption, unique physical and chemical characteristics, and non-toxic nature. In addition, BiVO4 with different morphologies has been synthesized and exhibited excellent visible light photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of various organic pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Nevertheless, the commercial scale utilization of BiVO4 is significantly limited because of the poor separation (faster recombination rate) and transport ability of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. So, engineering/modifications of BiVO4 materials are performed to enhance their structural, electronic, and morphological properties. Thus, this review article aims to provide a critical overview of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), various semiconducting nanomaterials, BiVO4 synthesis methodologies, engineering of BiVO4 properties through making binary and ternary nanocomposites, and coupling with metals/non-metals and metal nanoparticles and the development of Z-scheme type nanocomposites, etc., and their visible light photocatalytic efficiency in VOCs degradation. In addition, future challenges and the way forward for improving the commercial-scale application of BiVO4-based semiconducting nanomaterials are also discussed. Thus, we hope that this review is a valuable resource for designing BiVO4-based nanocomposites with superior visible-light-driven photocatalytic efficiency in VOCs degradation.

RESUMO

An easy and reliable method is optimized for extractive spectrophotometric assessment of platinum(IV) with 4-(4'-nitrobenzylideneimino)-3-methyl-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole as an extractant. The basis of this method is the formation of red platinum(IV) complex with the above reagent in acetate buffer medium (pH 5.0) and extraction in chloroform. Good linearity with regression equation as y = 1.011 × 104 ×  + 0.002 having correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.998 over concentration up to 17.5 µg mL-1 of platinum(IV) was achieved with apparent molar absorptivity of 1.011 × 104 L mol-1 cm-1. The limit of detection (0.22 µg mL-1), limit of quantification (0.73 µg mL-1) and Sandell's sensitivity (0.0193 µg cm-2) were also estimated. The interference of various cations was removed by using proper masking agents and consequently by using EDTA and citrate to mask certain transition metals, the method becomes highly specific for platinum(IV), including the effects of platinum group metals. The method is effectively used for determination of platinum(IV) from environmental and real samples such as alloys, catalysts, thermocouple wire and pharmaceutical sample.

RESUMO

In this article, a novel spectrophotometric reagent 1-(pyrimidine)-4, 4, 6-trimethyl-1,4-dihydropyrimidine-2-thiol [PTPT] has been synthesized for liquid-liquid extraction and spectrophotometric determination of copper(II). The as-synthesized ligand has been selectively forms stable complex with copper(II) in basic medium (pH 9.0), in presence of mild pyridine the extraction and color stability has found to be synergistically enhanced. The equilibrium time is 10 min for effective extraction of copper(II) from organic phase and absorbance of colored organic complex in carbon tetrachloride is measured spectrophotometrically at λmax 615 nm against reagent blank. The ternary complex of Cu(II)-PTPT-Py having molar ratio 1:2:2 (M:L:Py) showed green colored complex. The main factors influencing the achievement of synergistic extraction; i.e. pH, ligand concentration, type and volume of the dispersive organic solvents, equilibrium time, synergent concentration and foreign ions were investigated. The Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration range 1-20 µg mL-1 of copper(II) and optimum concentration range is evaluated by Ringbom's plot and it is found that 2.5-25 µg mL-1. In presence of pyridine, molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of copper(II)-PTPT complex is 2.80 × 103 L mol-1 cm-1 and 0.226 µg cm-2, respectively and in absence of pyridine, molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of copper(II)-PTPT complex is 1.35 × 103 L mol-1 cm-1 and 0.469 µg cm-2, respectively. The stoichiometry of the copper(II)-PTPT-pyridine complex was calculated by slope ratio method, mole ratio method and Job's method of continuous variation and it has been found as 1:2:2. No significant effects of potentially interfering species i.e. cations and anions were observed. The optimized method was applied for the determination of copper(II) in binary, synthetic mixtures and successfully applied for determination of copper(II) from e-waste samples. The standard deviation (R.S.D.) is 0.11% for n = 5 repetition. The reliability of the developed method is confirmed by comparison of experimental results with atomic absorption spectrophotometer.

RESUMO

Herein we have synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using liquid metabolic waste of Bos taurus (A-2 type) urine. Various bio-molecules present in cow urine, are effectively used to reduce silver (Ag) ions into silver nanoparticles in one step. This is bio-inspired electron transfer to Ag ion for the formation of base Ag metal and is fairly prompt and facile. These nanoparticles act as a positive catalyst for various organic transformation reactions. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the as-synthesized Ag NPs are widely characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transmission infra-red spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The as-synthesized bio-mimetic Ag NPs show potential activity for several reduction reactions of nitro groups. The Ag NPs were also used for degradation of hazardous dyes such as Methylene blue and Crystal violet with good degradation rate constant.

RESUMO

The BiVO4 photocatalyst plays a very important role in photocatalytic reactions attributed to its unique crystalline structure, size, morphology and surface area. Herein, we report a facet-dependent monoclinic scheelite BiVO4 (m-BiVO4) photocatalyst with uniform truncated square (18 sided) hexagonal bipyramidal shape synthesized by a template-free and surfactant-free solvothermal method using ethylene glycol solvent under cost-effective and mild reactions. The structural, morphological and optical properties of the m-BiVO4 photocatalyst are widely characterized. The photocatalytic activity of the m-BiVO4 photocatalyst is tested towards 20 ppm methylene blue (MB) dye aqueous solution as a pollutant model under visible light irradiation. Enhanced visible-light driven photoactivity with dye degradation efficiency of approx. 91% at a rate of 0.388 × 10-2 min-1 is obtained, presumably due to the presence of high-active (040) facets. Zebrafish embryo toxicity test of treated MB dye solution reveals the degradation and toxicity reduction of the MB dye. Moreover, the recycling experiment validates that the m-BiVO4 photocatalyst has a great structural stability with reliable performance. This work may provide a lucid and expedient strategy to synthesize highly crystalline (040) facet-dependent semiconductor photocatalyst toward dye degradation and obviously industrial wastewater remediation.

RESUMO

The aim of the present work is to develop an efficient, simple and selective moreover cost-effective method for the extractive spectrophotometric determination of copper(II) by using the Schiff base 4-(4'-chlorobenzylideneimino)-3-methyl-5-mercapto-1, 2, 4-triazole [CBIMMT]. This chromogenic reagent forms a yellow coloured complex with copper(II) in acetate buffer at pH4.2. The copper(II) complex with ligand is instantly extracted into chloroform and shows a maximum absorbance at 414nm which remains stable for >48h. The composition of extracted complex is found to be 1:2 [copper(II): reagent] which was ascertained using Job's method of continuous variation, mole ratio method and slope ratio method. Under optimal conditions, the copper(II) complex in chloroform adheres to Beer's law up to 17.5µgmL-1 of copper(II). The optimum concentration range obtained from Ringbom's plot is from 5µgmL-1 to 17.5µgmL-1. The molar absorptivity, Sandell's sensitivity and enrichment factor of the extracted copper(II) chelate are 0.33813×104Lmol-1cm-1, 0.01996µgcm-2 and 2.49 respectively. In the extraction of copper(II), several affecting factors including the solution pH, ligand concentration, equilibrium time, effect of foreign ions are optimized. The interfering effects of various cations and anions were also studied and use of masking agents enhances the selectivity of the method. The chromogenic sulphur containing reagent, 4-(4'-chlorobenzylideneimino)-3-methyl-5-mercapto-1, 2, 4-triazole has been synthesized in a single step with high purity and yield. The synthesized reagent has been successfully applied first time for determination of copper(II). The reagent forms stable chelate with copper(II) in buffer medium instantly and quantitatively extracted in chloroform within a minute. The method is successfully applied for the determination of copper(II) in various synthetic mixtures, complexes, fertilizers, environmental samples such as food samples, leafy vegetables, and water samples. The results are compared with those obtained with a reference procedure. Good agreement was attained. All the obtained results are indicative of a convenient, fast method for the extraction and quantification of micro levels of copper(II) from various environmental matrices without use of sophisticated instrumentation and procedure. The method showed a relative standard deviation of 0.42%.

RESUMO

A rapid and simple spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of copper(II) by using newly synthesized chromogenic reagent, N″,N″'-bis[(E)-(4-fluorophenyl)methylidene]thiocarbonohydrazide [bis(4-fluoroPM)TCH]. The reagent is highly sensitive and it forms yellow colored ternary complex with copper(II) in presence pyridine having composition 1:1:2 (M:L:Py) in the acidic pH range. Absorption of colored complex in amyl acetate is measured with reagent as a blank at λmax 375 nm. The synergistic effect is observed due to pyridine forming adduct with reagent in the organic phase. Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration range from 2.0 to 14 µg mL(-1) for copper(II)-[bis(4-fluoroPM)TCH]-Py complex. Molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity values for Cu(II)-bis(4-fluoroPM)TCH]-Py complex are 0.42545×10(5) and 0.0014 µg/cm(2), respectively. The selectivity of the developed method was checked in the presence of various foreign ions. The developed method showed relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) of 0.13% for n=10. The composition of Cu(II)-[bis(4-fluoroPM)TCH]-Py complex was determined by known methods such as Job's method of continuous variation, mole ratio method and slope ratio method. It is found that the ternary complex is stable for more than 24h. Various factors influencing on the degree of complexation, such as, effect of pH, reagent concentration, synergent concentration, solvent etc. were studied. The accuracy and reliability of method was verified by AAS. This method is found to be simple, rapid and reproducible.

RESUMO

The liquid-liquid extraction of neodymium(III) from succinate media (0.06 M) has been studied at pH 6.0 with the solution of 0.1 M of N-n-octylaniline in xylene when equilibrium is maintained for 5 min. The back-extraction of neodymium(III) has been performed by using 0.1 M HClO4. The effect of various parameters, such as pH, equilibrium time, extractant concentration, stripping agents, organic diluents, and aqueous to organic volume ratio on the extraction of neodymium(III) has been studied. On the basis of slope analysis, the stoichiometry of the extracted species was determined as 1 : 1 : 2 [RR'NH2⁺Nd(succinate)2⁻](org). The method is free from interference of large number cations and anions. The method was used for the selective extraction of neodymium(III) from its binary mixture with U(VI), Zr(IV), Nb(V), La(III), Th(IV), Ce(IV), and Y(III). The proposed method is selective and was successfully applied to the synthetic mixtures to show the practical utility of the extractant.

RESUMO

A synergistic simple and selective spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of cobalt(II) with 1-(2',4'-dinitro aminophenyl)-4,4,6-trimethyl-1,4-dihydropyrimidine-2-thiol [2',4'-dinitro APTPT] as a chromogenic reagent. The proposed method has been described on the basis of synergistic effective extraction of cobalt(II) in presence of pyridine at pH range 9.5-10.2, showed orange-red coloured ternary complex having molar ratio 1:2:2 (M:L:Py). The equilibrium time is 10 min for extraction of cobalt(III) from organic phase. The absorbance of coloured organic layer in chloroform is measured spectrophotometrically at 490 nm against reagent blank. The Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration range 2.5-15 µg mL(-1) of cobalt(II) and optimum concentration range was 5-12.5 µg mL(-1) of cobalt(II) and it was evaluated from Ringbom's plot. The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of cobalt(II)-2',4'-dinitro APTPT-pyridine complex in chloroform are 1.109×10(3) L mol(-1) cm(-1) and 0.053 µg cm(-2), respectively while molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of cobalt(II)-2',4'-dinitro APTPT complex in chloroform are 6.22×10(2) L mol(-1) cm(-1) and 0.096 µg cm(-2), respectively. The composition of cobalt(II)-2',4'-dinitro APTPT-pyridine complex (1:2:2) was established by slope ratio method, mole ratio method and Job's method of continuous variation. The ternary complex was stable for more than 48 h. The interfering effects of various cations and anions were also studied, and use of suitable masking agents enhances the selectivity of the method. The method is successfully applied for the determination of cobalt(II) in binary, synthetic mixtures and real samples. A repetition of the method was checked by finding relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) for n=5 which was 0.15%. The reliability of the method is confirmed by comparison of experimental results with atomic absorption spectrophotometer.

RESUMO

A simple and selective spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of copper(II) with 1-(2',4'-dinitro aminophenyl)-4,4,6-trimethyl-1,4-dihydropyrimidine-2-thiol [2',4'-dinitro APTPT] as a chromogenic reagent. The procedure was based on the synergistic extraction of copper(II) with 2',4'-dinitro APTPT in the presence of 0.5 mol L(-1) pyridine to give green colored ternary complex of a molar ratio 1:2:2 (M:L:Py) in the pH range 8.7-10.5. It exhibits a maximum absorption of colored complex at 445 nm and 645 nm in chloroform against the reagent blank. Beer's law was followed in the concentration range 10-80 µg mL(-1) of copper(II) and optimum range of 20-70 µg mL(-1) the metal as evaluated from Ringbom's plot. The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of copper(II)-2',4'-dinitro APTPT-pyridine complex in chloroform are 0.87×10(3) L mol(-1)c m(-1) and 0.072 µg cm(-2), respectively. The interfering effects of various cations and anions were also studied, and use of suitable masking agents enhances the selectivity of the method. The proposed method is rapid, reproducible and successfully applied for the determination of copper(II) in binary and synthetic mixtures, alloys, pharmaceutical formulations, environmental and fertilizer samples. Comparison of the results with those obtained using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer also tested the validity of the method.

RESUMO

Synergistic liquid-liquid extractive spectrophotometric determination of gold(III) using 1-(2',4'-dinitro aminophenyl)-4,4,6-trimethyl-1,4-dihydro pyrimidine-2-thiol [2',4'-dinitro APTPT] has been described. Equal volumes (5cm(3)) of the 2',4'-dinitro APTPT (0.02molL(-1)) in the presence of pyridine (0.5molL(-1)) form an orange-red coloured ternary complex with gold(III) of molar ratio 1:1:1 at pH 1.8-2.4 with 5min of shaking. The absorbance of coloured organic layer in 1,2-dichloroethane is measured spectrophotometrically at 445nm against reagent blank. A pronounced synergism has been observed by the binary mixture of 2',4'-dinitro APTPT and pyridine, which shows that the enhancement in the absorbance is observed in the presence of pyridine by the adduct formation in the organic phase. Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration range 2.5-20.0microgmL(-1), with molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity values of 8.7x10(3)dm(3)mol(-1)cm(-1) and 0.023microgcm(-2) respectively. A repetition of the method was checked by finding relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) (n=10) which was 0.17%. The composition of the gold(III)-2',4'-dinitro APTPT-pyridine adduct was established by slope analysis, molar ratio and Job's method. The ternary complex was stable for more than 48h. The influence of various factors such as pH, 2',4'-dinitro APTPT concentration, solvent and pyridine on the degree of complexation has been established. A number of foreign ions tested for their interferences and use of suitable masking agents wherever necessary are tabulated, which show that selectivity of the method has been enhanced. The method is successfully employed for the determination of gold(III) in binary, synthetic mixtures and ayurvedic samples. The reliability of the method is assured by inter-comparison of experimental values, using an atomic absorption spectrometer.
