RESUMO

1. In a one-year follow-up 191 patients on lithium therapy, besides their regular check-ups, were assessed on mood, side-effects and intracellular lithium. 2. The authors were not able to find a correlation between the so called lithium index (i.e. the quotient intracellular lithium/plasma lithium) and the mood score. 3. In the group of patients which used no co-medication at all during the year of the follow-up the authors also failed to find a correlation between the lithium index and some of the clinically most relevant side-effects. However, in that selected group of "only-lithium-using-patients"-only 29 in all-the authors found a remarkable stability in the index value. 4. So even if the authors, in fact, rejected the lithium index estimation as a tool in daily praxis, the authors would once again underline the interesting findings about the so-called lithium index.

RESUMO

Four sporadic cases of congenital swinepox are described. The pigs were born with pox lesions over their entire bodies. Microscopic examination revealed ballooning degeneration of keratinocytes, cytoplasmic inclusions and intranuclear vacuolisation. Electron microscopy detected poxvirus particles in all four pigs. The virus was isolated from one pig and identified by HindIII restriction endonuclease digestion as swinepox virus.

RESUMO

Antidepressants are ineffective in about 30% of patients with major depression. Some authors then advise treatment of non-responders with (non-tricyclic) more selective reuptake inhibitors. In a double-blind, partial crossover study, 71 patients were selected for treatment during 4 weeks with oxaprotiline and/or fluvoxamine, two non-tricyclic antidepressants that are selective reuptake inhibitors or noradrenaline and serotonin respectively. All patients had failed to respond to earlier treatment with cyclic antidepressants during the current episode. Only 13% of the patients responded, with 27% of them responding to oxaprotiline and none to fluvoxamine. Moreover, a low response of 27% was also obtained in the crossover phase, which included all non-responders to the first treatment, oxaprotiline being effective in 39% and fluvoxamine in 10% of the patients. The results indicate that selective reuptake inhibitors are not an effective alternative for non-responders to other cyclic antidepressants and that non-responders to "noradrenergic" antidepressants do not appear to have much chance of responding to "serotonergic" antidepressants and vice versa.

RESUMO

Antidepressants are ineffective in about 30% of the patients with major depression. Besides electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and lithium, MAO inhibitors have been suggested as an alternative in such patients. In 2 controlled, partial crossover studies involving 47 patients with major depression who had already been treated unsuccessfully with at least 2 cyclic antidepressants, the effect of the MAO inhibitor tranylcypromine was studied. The first study was an open comparison with L-5-hydroxytryptophan (L-5HTP), the second study a double-blind comparison with nomifensine. Neither the patients treated with L-5HTP nor the patients treated with nomifensine, except one, improved. In contrast, tranylcypromine was effective in 50% of the patients. The depressions of the responders to tranylcypromine appeared to be more endogenous (according Newcastle Scale II) and of shorter duration than those of the non-responders. It is concluded that MAO inhibitors such as tranylcypromine are an effective alternative to ECT and lithium in patients with major depression who have failed to respond to cyclic antidepressants.

RESUMO

During an outbreak of a herpesvirus infection in juvenile harbor seals, 11 out of 23 seals died. The duration of the disease in these 11 animals varied from 1-6 days. Nasal discharge, inflammation of the oral mucosa, vomiting, diarrhea and fever up to 40 degrees C were observed in the first days of the disease. In later stages coughing, anorexia and lethargy occurred. Severe necrosis of the liver and interstitial pneumonia were the most striking histopathological findings.

RESUMO

L-5HTP and tranylcypromine were compared in an open, but controlled and cross-over study, in patients suffering from major depression; all were non-responders to several reuptake inhibitors, including oxaprotiline and fluvoxamine. After four unsuccessful sleep-deprivations, L-5HTP or tranylcypromine were given during four weeks in a crossover design. Of 17 patients given L-5HTP during both treatment periods, none responded, whereas of 26 patients treated with tranylcypromine, 15 responded. Thus, L-5HTP is not a therapeutically effective alternative in depressed patients who have not responded to reuptake inhibitors.

RESUMO

A case of rumen acidosis in non-lactating cattle is reported. This was due to the fact that stale bread was fed ad lib, rather than concentrates. Of seventy animals, fourteen died or were slaughtered. The meat was declared unfit for human consumption in every case.

RESUMO

A rare case of colic in an eleven-year-old New Forrest mare is reported. As treatment was ineffective, the animal had to be slaughtered. Post mortem examination showed that the colic was due to bilateral haemorrhagic corpus luteum, from which blood (appr. 20 liter) entered the abdominal cavity.

RESUMO

A case of tricuspid atresia in a premature foal associated with large atrial septal and ventricular septal defects is reported. This anomaly is compared with other cases in horses as reported in the literature. As tricuspid atresia in horses is usually not diagnosed so that relatively few cases have been reported, a classification similar to that of human anomalies is not possible. It is suggested that the present malformation is due to abnormal development of the atrioventricular canal. The factors involved in the pathogenesis of this abnormal development are obscure.

RESUMO

A new automated method is proposed for the accurate determination of the true creatinine concentration in 20 microliter serum, based on the measurement of the initial rate of the decomposition reaction of the creatinine picrate complex caused by decreasing the pH. The results of this method, performed with a Centrifichem centrifugal analyzer system (type 300 F), are compared with the results obtained by two other methods: a manual method based upon the adsorption on Fuller's earth, and the Auto Analyzer method. In these comparative studies special attention is paid to the analysis of sera containing low (normal) substrate concentrations. Calculation of the orthogonal regression between the results obtained by the adsorption method (x) and the proposed method (y) gave: y=0.97x +/- 5 mumol/l (x=91.3 mumol/l, y-93.5 mumol/l), while for the correlation coefficient (r) 0.9721 was found. All sera (n=113) had creatinine concentrations between 40 and 180 mumol/l.
