RESUMO

Accurately measuring the size, morphology, and structure of nanoparticles is very important, because they are strongly dependent on their properties for many applications. In this paper, we present a deep-learning based method for nanoparticle measurement and classification trained from a small data set of scanning transmission electron microscopy images including overlapping nanoparticles. Our approach is comprised of two stages: localization, i.e., detection of nanoparticles, and classification, i.e., categorization of their ultrastructure. For each stage, we optimize the segmentation and classification by analysis of the different state-of-the-art neural networks. We show how the generation of synthetic images, either using image processing or using various image generation neural networks, can be used to improve the results in both stages. Finally, the application of the algorithm to bimetallic nanoparticles demonstrates the automated data collection of size distributions including classification of complex ultrastructures. The developed method can be easily transferred to other material systems and nanoparticle structures.

RESUMO

Au nanoparticle (NP) decorated heterogeneous TiO2 catalysts are known to be effective in the degradation of various organic pollutants. The photocatalytic performance of such Au-TiO2 structures remarkably depends on the size, morphology, and surface coverage of the Au NPs decorating TiO2. Here we propose an effective way of preparing a highly active Au nanocluster (NC) decorated TiO2 thin film by a novel photodeposition method. By altering the solvent type as well as the illumination time, we achieved well-controlled surface coverage of TiO2 by Au NCs, which directly influences the photocatalytic performance. Here the Au NCs coverage affects both the electron store capacity and the optical absorption of the hybrid Au-TiO2 system. At low surface coverage, 19.2-29.5%, the Au NCs seem to enhance significantly the optical adsorption of TiO2 at UV wavelengths which therefore leads to a higher photocatalytic performance.

RESUMO

Advanced quantitative TEM/EDXS methods were used to characterize different ultrastructures of magnetic Fe-Au core-shell nanoparticles formed by laser ablation in liquids. The findings demonstrate the presence of Au-rich alloy shells with varying composition in all structures and elemental bcc Fe cores. The identified structures are metastable phases interpreted by analogy to the bulk phase diagram. Based on this, we propose a formation mechanism of these complex ultrastructures. To show the magnetic response of these magnetic core nanoparticles protected by a noble metal shell, we demonstrate the formation of nanostrands in the presence of an external magnetic field. We find that it is possible to control the lengths of these strands by the iron content within the alloy nanoparticles.

RESUMO

The development of functional microstructures with designed hierarchical and complex morphologies and large free active surfaces offers new potential for improvement of the pristine microstructures properties by the synergistic combination of microscopic as well as nanoscopic effects. In this contribution, dedicated methods of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) including tomography are used to characterize the complex hierarchically structured hybrid GaN/ZnO:Au microtubes containing a dense nanowire network on their interior. The presence of an epitaxially stabilized and chemically extremely stable ultrathin layer of ZnO on the inner wall of the produced GaN microtubes is evidenced. Gold nanoparticles initially trigger the catalytic growth of solid solution phase (Ga1- x Znx )(N1- x Ox ) nanowires into the interior space of the microtube, which are found to be terminated by AuGa-alloy nanodots coated in a shell of amorphous GaOx species after the hydride vapor phase epitaxy process. The structural characterization suggests that this hierarchical design of GaN/ZnO microtubes could offer the potential to exhibit improved photocatalytic properties, which are initially demonstrated under UV light irradiation. As a proof of concept, the produced microtubes are used as photocatalytic micromotors in the presence of hydrogen peroxide solution with luminescent properties, which are appealing for future environmental applications and active matter fundamental studies.

RESUMO

A new preparation route is developed for the synthesis of needle-like crystals of [Au(S2 CNH2 )2 ]SCN, which avoids disproportionation of the AuI salt used as a starting material. In the crystal structure, the two crystallographically independent AuIII centers are in a square-planar environment of two S2 CNH2 ligands. The Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals the presence of noncovalent intermolecular S⋅⋅⋅S interactions, which are essential for the spatial arrangement of the molecules. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations including dispersion and damping corrections result in a unit cell volume very close to the value determined experimentally. Thermal decomposition in an inert atmosphere generates black needles with lengths of up to 500 µm. X-ray powder diffraction and pair distribution function analyses demonstrate that the needles are composed of nanosized crystals with a volume-weighted average domain size of 20(1) nm. According to results of X-ray photoemission experiments, the black needles are covered by a nitrogen-rich carbon nitride with composition near (CN)2 N. 13 C solid-state NMR investigations indicate that two different carbon species are present, with signals corresponding well to heptazine units as in melon and triazine units as in poly(triazin imide) type compounds. Scanning transmission electron microscopy tomography evidences that the needles are composed of slightly elongated nanoparticles.

RESUMO

The single-step incorporation of multiple immiscible elements into colloidal high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles has manifold technological potential, but it continues to be a challenge for state-of-the-art synthesis methods. Hence, the development of a synthesis approach by which the chemical composition and phase of colloidal HEA nanoparticles can be controlled could lead to a new pool of nanoalloys with unparalleled functionalities. Herein, this study reports the single-step synthesis of colloidal CoCrFeMnNi HEA nanoparticles with targeted equimolar stoichiometry and diameters less than 5 nm by liquid-phase, ultrashort-pulsed laser ablation of the consolidated and heat-treated micropowders of the five constituent metals. Further, the scalability of the process with an unprecedented productivity of 3 grams of colloidal HEA nanoparticles per hour is demonstrated. Electrochemical analysis reveals a unique redox behavior of the particles' surfaces in an alkaline environment and a potential for future application as a heterogeneous catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction.

RESUMO

The application of an Au-Fe nanoalloy is determined by its internal phase structure. Our experimental and theoretical findings explain how the prevalence of either a core-shell or a disordered solid solution structure is ruled by the target composition and the particle diameter. Furthermore, we found metastable phases not predefined by the bulk phase diagram.
