RESUMO

The influence of testosterone and estrogen on memory was investigated in 33 healthy young men. Tests of visual memory, visuospatial ability, verbal memory, and attention were administered, and circulating levels of estradiol and free testosterone were measured. Participants with high levels of estradiol performed better on 2 measures of visual memory than did those with normal but lower levels. There were no differences between individuals with high and low levels of testosterone on any cognitive measure. These results support the contention that estradiol influences memory in young men.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether differences in verbal memory might be related to estrogen use in a group of healthy, well-functioning, postmenopausal community-residing women from a broad socioeconomic range. METHODS: Healthy postmenopausal women drawn from the general population were given tests of verbal and spatial memory, language, attention, and general spatial skills. The performance of women taking estrogen was compared to that of women from the same population who were not taking any form of estrogen replacement therapy. RESULTS: There were no differences between the estrogen users and non-users on any sociodemographic variables. However, the scores of women taking estrogen were significantly higher on tests of immediate and delayed paragraph recall compared to the scores of non-users. No differences were apparent on other tests of cognitive functioning, including tests of spatial memory. CONCLUSION: Estrogen appears to have a specific effect on verbal memory skills in healthy postmenopausal women. The clinical relevance of these findings for healthy older women remains to be determined.

RESUMO

Neuropsychological functioning and cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of an endogenous neurotoxin, quinolinic acid (QUIN) were evaluated in 52 HIV-positive individuals (71% without constitutional symptoms) and 33 HIV-seronegative controls (including 15 psychiatric patients with adjustment disorders). Although the HIV-positive subjects did not differ from controls on standard neuropsychological tests, simple and choice reactions times (RT) were slow at initial evaluation (P less than 0.01) and became progressively slower at 6-month re-evaluation (P less than 0.05). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) QUIN was elevated at initial evaluation and increased during the 6-month interval (P less than 0.05). Moreover, during this 6-month interval, progressive slowing of RT was highly correlated with increasing levels of CSF QUIN (r = 0.85, df = 15, P less than 0.0001) but not with changes in mood, constitutional symptoms, or CD4 cell count. These findings suggest that RT may provide a sensitive behavioral measure of relatively early central nervous system involvement in HIV-infected individuals and that QUIN may play an important role in the pathogenesis of HIV-related neurological dysfunction.
