RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to extend the Theory of Planned Behavior with Triggers (TPBT) to improve the prediction of physical activity (PA) behavior using the TPB model. METHODS: Questionnaires, including the TPB scale, PA rating scale (PARS-3), and triggers scale, were administered to 596 Chinese college students, and the data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 24.0. RESULTS: Subjective norm (SN), attitude (AT), and perceived behavioral control (PBC) all significantly and positively affected behavioral intention (BI). The path coefficient of PA behavior was significantly influenced by the interaction term of three types of triggers and BI, and the TPB with Triggers (TPBT) model improved the explanation rate of PA behavior. CONCLUSION: Triggers have a moderating effect on the relationship between BI and PA behavior, and the TPBT model better explains college students' PA behavior. Among the three dimensions of triggers, people are more receptive to facilitator and signal triggers than spark triggers. This has practical implications for practitioners designing interventions to promote PA among college students.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has negatively affected individuals' participation in sport activities, while sport participation is an important regulator of well-being. The current study investigated the effects of the nostalgia for sport activities and self-regulation of sport activities on subjective well-being. A total of 302 responses were collected from participants who had engaged in sport activities before the lockdown period. The data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings showed that nostalgia positively affected the self-regulation of sport and subjective well-being. In addition, self-regulation of sport was positively associated with subjective well-being. Based on the findings of this study, policymakers can implement interventions that promote an individual's feelings of nostalgia, as it might lead them to engage in sport or promote self-regulation.

Myriad research indicates that physical activity and natural environments enhance cognitive performance and mental health. Much of this research is cross-sectional or involves physical activity in outdoor environments, rendering it difficult to ascribe the results to a particular condition. This study utilized electroencephalography (EEG) and established cognitive performance tasks to determine the impact of a short intervention including either walking or sitting in an outdoor environment. In this experiment, a total of 50 participants were randomized into walking and sitting groups, with cognitive performance measured before, after, and 10 min post intervention. Both groups demonstrated improvements in cognitive performance, with no significant difference between groups. Elevated levels of relaxation during the intervention were the best predictor of post-test performance. Participants reporting a higher connection to nature, as well as state-based mindfulness during the outdoor intervention, also reported lower levels of frontal theta (i.e., rumination) during the interaction, while the walking group demonstrated higher relaxation. These findings provide a direct connection to neural mechanisms influenced by physical activity and the natural environment, and their impact on cognitive performance. This supports Attention Restoration Theory and the effectiveness of short outdoor interventions incorporating physical activity as a method of restoring mental attention.

A paucity of research has addressed the relationship between each psychological construct of playfulness and smartphone dependency, and the purpose of this research is to understand how each psychological construct of playfulness, including physical animation, social engagement, mental spontaneity, emotional fluidity, and humorous perspective playfulness, influences smartphone dependency of the upper grades of elementary schoolers. For this purpose, a total of 278 questionnaires was analyzed for descriptive, correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The correlation analysis showed that respondents' age positively and parents' education levels negatively correlates to smartphone dependency. The multiple regression analyses showed that physical animation playfulness and emotional fluidity playfulness negatively and social engagement playfulness positively influence smartphone dependency of the respondents. The findings indicate that to reduce smartphone dependency among elementary schoolers, physical animation and emotional fluidity playfulness need to be promoted. The findings also suggest that each component of playfulness has distinctive advantages and disadvantages of developmental processes in childhood, and more future research endeavors need to be directed to understand the role of playfulness in children's behaviors and cognitive processes.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop a Physical Activity Triggers Questionnaire for Chinese college students and to evaluate its reliability and validity. METHODS: On the theoretical basis of the Fogg behavior model and semi-open interviews, an initial questionnaire with 18 items was compiled. The initial questionnaire was administered to 575 students, and to examine its reliability and validity, item discrimination analysis, correlation analysis, homogeneity test, and exploratory factor analysis were conducted using SPSS 26.0. After the examination of the initial questionnaire, the initial 18 items were reduced to 14. The 14-item questionnaire was administered to 621 college students, and with the data, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, validity test, and reliability test were conducted. RESULTS: To examine the psychometric properties of the 18 items, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted, and their reliability and validity were examined. After the first round of item development analysis, four items were removed, and a triggers questionnaire with 14 items was developed. The 14 items had three dimensions, including spark, signal, and facilitator triggers, and the cumulative explained variance of the three dimensions was 61.21%. The confirmatory factor analysis of the three dimensions of the 14 items indicated appropriate scale fit indices. The internal consistency reliability, split-half reliability, and test-retest reliability of the 14 items were 0.925, 0.821, and 0.860, respectively, showing that the items have appropriate reliability. CONCLUSIONS: The Physical Activity Triggers Questionnaire of the study has acceptable reliability and validity. It is the first questionnaire to measure Chinese college students' triggers of physical activity and will provide a new basis for the understanding of psychometric properties of physical activity triggers. In addition, the future findings collected from the developed triggers questionnaire can be used to develop strategies to promote health among college students.
