RESUMO

ELSiTO (Empowering Learning for Social Inclusion Through Occupation), an international collaborative partnership, with over 30 members from Belgium, Greece and the Netherlands, aimed to explore the nature and processes of social inclusion for persons experiencing mental illness. Members included persons experiencing mental illness and health professionals. Four international visits and local activities enabled a knowledge creation process that combined the experience of social inclusion as we lived and worked together with exploration of the processes of community projects, narratives of experiences and reflective workshops. Outcomes included identification and description of the following: the nature of social inclusion as lived by the participants; the critical elements that support inclusion; and the competences that are developed by all stakeholders during this process. The complex process of social inclusion is facilitated by doing together in environments that enable equality, trust, risk taking and realignment of power. These conceptual understandings of inclusion are discussed in relation to the ongoing activities of the partners, to their potential contribution to the education of occupational therapists (and other professionals) and to the development of socially inclusive occupation-based projects in the community.

RESUMO

Two morphological forms of programmed cell death, apoptosis and autophagic cell death, remove unneeded or damaged cells during animal development. Although the mechanisms that regulate apoptosis are well studied, little is known about autophagic cell death. A shotgun proteome analysis of purified dying larval salivary glands in Drosophila was used to identify proteins that are expressed during autophagic programmed cell death. A total of 5661 proteins were identified from stages before and after the onset of cell death. Analyses of these data enabled us to identify proteins from a number of interesting categories including regulators of transcription, the apoptosis, autophagy, lysosomal, and ubiquitin proteasome degradation pathways, and proteins involved in growth control. Several of the identified proteins, including the serine/threonine kinase warts (Wts), were not detected using whole-genome DNA microarrays, providing support for the importance of such high-throughput proteomic technology. Wts regulates cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis, and significantly, mutations in wts prevent destruction of salivary glands.

RESUMO

We report the case of a 37-year-old female patient suffering from schizophrenia, disorganized type. Adherence to treatment was always a major problem. During the last 2 years the patient was disorganized and was refusing treatment. Since the patient was already receiving a very high (double) dose per os, it was decided to administer two 50 ml ampoules of long-acting, injectable risperidone plus 5 mg of haloperidol per os daily. After 80 days of treatment, all positive, negative and even neurocognitive symptoms improved markedly. Extrapyramidal side effects did not appear at any stage of treatment. The most impressive neurocognitive improvement concerned the clock drawing test, which was in parallel with her improvement in both the positive and negative symptoms of the PANSS.
