Introduction: The ongoing global expansion of salt-affected land is a significant factor, limiting the growth and yield of crops, particularly rice (Oryza sativa L). This experiment explores the mitigation of salt-induced damage in rice (cv BRRI dhan100) following the application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Methods: Rice seedlings, at five- and six-weeks post-transplanting, were subjected to salt stress treatments using 50 and 100 mM NaCl at seven-day intervals. Bacterial cultures consisting of endophytic PGPR (Bacillus subtilis and B. aryabhattai) and an epiphytic PGPR (B. aryabhattai) were administered at three critical stages: transplantation of 42-day-old seedlings, vegetative stage at five weeks post-transplantation, and panicle initiation stage at seven weeks post-transplantation. Results: Salt stress induced osmotic stress, ionic imbalances, and oxidative damage in rice plants, with consequent negative effects on growth, decrease in photosynthetic efficiency, and changes in hormonal regulation, along with increased methylglyoxal (MG) toxicity. PGPR treatment alleviated salinity effects by improving plant antioxidant defenses, restoring ionic equilibrium, enhancing water balance, increasing nutrient uptake, improving photosynthetic attributes, bolstering hormone synthesis, and enhancing MG detoxification. Discussion: These findings highlight the potential of PGPR to bolster physiological and biochemical functionality in rice by serving as an effective buffer against salt stress-induced damage. B. subtilis showed the greatest benefits, while both the endophytic and epiphytic B. aryabhattai had commendable effects in mitigating salt stress-induced damage in rice plants.

RESUMO

A fully homomorphic encryption system enables computation on encrypted data without the necessity for prior decryption. This facilitates the seamless establishment of a secure quantum channel, bridging the server and client components, and thereby providing the client with secure access to the server's substantial computational capacity for executing quantum operations. However, traditional homomorphic encryption systems lack scalability, programmability, and stability. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-concept implementation of a homomorphic encryption scheme on a compact quantum chip, verifying the feasibility of using photonic chips for quantum homomorphic encryption. Our work not only provides a solution for circuit expansion, addressing the longstanding challenge of scalability while significantly reducing the size of quantum network infrastructure, but also lays the groundwork for the development of highly sophisticated quantum fully homomorphic encryption systems.

Supercapacitors have substantially altered the landscape of sophisticated energy storage devices with their exceptional power density along with prolonged cyclic stability. On the contrary, their energy density remains low, requiring research to compete with conventional battery storage devices. This study addresses the disparities between energy and power densities in energy storage technologies by exploring the integration of layered double hydroxides (LDH) and highly conductive materials to develop an innovative energy storage system. Four electrodes were fabricated via a hydrothermal process using NiCoCu LDH, Ag-citrate, PANI, and f-SWCNTs. The optimal electrode demonstrated exceptional electrochemical properties; at 0.5 A g-1, it possessed specific capacitances of 807 F g-1, twice as high as those of the pure sample. The constructed asymmetric supercapacitor device attained energy densities of 62.15 W h kg-1 and 22.44 W h kg-1, corresponding to power densities of 1275 W kg-1 and 11 900 W kg-1, respectively. Furthermore, it maintained 100% cyclic stability and a coulombic efficiency of 95% for 4000 charge-discharge cycles. The concept of a supercapacitor of the hybrid grade was reinforced by power law investigations, which unveiled b-values in the interval of 0.5 to 1. This research emphasizes the considerable potential of supercapacitor-grade NiCoCu LDH/Ag-citrate-PANI-f-SWCNTs nanocomposites for superior rate performance, robust cycle stability, and enhanced energy storage capacity.

Periodontal instrument fractures are rare events in dentistry, with limited literature available on their occurrence and management. This case report highlights an incident involving the fracture of a periodontal sickle scaler blade during manual instrumentation for the removal of calculus. The fracture occurred during instrumentation on the mesial surface of the maxillary right second molar, and the separated blade was subsequently pushed into the sulcus. A radiographic assessment was performed to verify the precise location of the fractured segment. Following confirmation, the broken blade was subsequently retrieved using curved artery forceps. The case report highlights factors contributing to instrument fractures, emphasizing the importance of instrument maintenance, sterilization cycles, and operator technique. Ethical considerations regarding patient disclosure, informed consent, and instrument retrieval methods are well discussed. This case underscores the importance of truthful communication, the proper use of instruments, equipment maintenance in dentistry, and the significance of ongoing professional development to enhance treatment safety, proficiency, and ethical standards in dental care.

BACKGROUND: PET scan stands as a valuable diagnostic tool in nuclear medicine, enabling the observation of metabolic and physiological changes at a molecular level. However, PET scans have a number of drawbacks, such as poor spatial resolution, noisy images, scattered radiation, artifacts, and radiation exposure. These challenges demonstrate the need for optimization in image processing techniques. OBJECTIVES: Our objective is to identify the evolving trends and impacts of publication in this field, as well as the most productive and influential countries, institutions, authors, themes, and articles. METHODS: A bibliometric study was conducted using a comprehensive query string such as "positron emission tomography" AND "image processing" AND optimization to retrieve 1,783 publications from 1981 to 2022 found in the Scopus database related to this field of study. RESULTS: The findings revealed that the most influential country, institution, and authors are from the USA, and the most prevalent theme is TOF PET image reconstruction. CONCLUSION: The increasing trend in publication in the field of optimization of image processing in PET scans would address the challenges in PET scan by reducing radiation exposure, faster scanning speed, as well as enhancing lesion identification.

BACKGROUND: The dentate nuclei of the cerebellum are key sites of neuropathology in Friedreich ataxia (FRDA). Reduced dentate nucleus volume and increased mean magnetic susceptibility, a proxy of iron concentration, have been reported by magnetic resonance imaging studies in people with FRDA. Here, we investigate whether these changes are regionally heterogeneous. METHODS: Quantitative susceptibility mapping data were acquired from 49 people with FRDA and 46 healthy controls. The dentate nuclei were manually segmented and analyzed using three dimensional vertex-based shape modeling and voxel-based assessments to identify regional changes in morphometry and susceptibility, respectively. RESULTS: Individuals with FRDA, relative to healthy controls, showed significant bilateral surface contraction most strongly at the rostral and caudal boundaries of the dentate nuclei. The magnitude of this surface contraction correlated with disease duration, and to a lesser extent, ataxia severity. Significantly greater susceptibility was also evident in the FRDA cohort relative to controls, but was instead localized to bilateral dorsomedial areas, and also correlated with disease duration and ataxia severity. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in the structure of the dentate nuclei in FRDA are not spatially uniform. Atrophy is greatest in areas with high gray matter density, whereas increases in susceptibility-reflecting iron concentration, demyelination, and/or gliosis-predominate in the medial white matter. These findings converge with established histological reports and indicate that regional measures of dentate nucleus substructure are more sensitive measures of disease expression than full-structure averages. Biomarker development and therapeutic strategies that directly target the dentate nuclei, such as gene therapies, may be optimized by targeting these areas of maximal pathology. © 2024 The Authors. Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) play a significant role in the electrocatalysis of water due to their large surface area and availability of increased numbers of pores. For the inaugural time, we examine the effectiveness of a hexamethylene tetra-amine (HMT)-induced 3D NiCo-MOF-based nanostructure as a potent bifunctional electrocatalyst with superior performance for overall water splitting in alkaline environments. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the as-synthesized bifunctional catalyst were examined thoroughly before analyzing its behavior towards electrochemical water splitting. The HMT-based NiCo-MOF demonstrated small overpotential values of 274 mV and 330 mV in reaching a maximum current density of 30 mA cm-2 for hydrogen and oxygen evolution mechanisms, respectively. The Tafel parameter also showed favorable HER/OER reaction kinetics, with slopes of 78 mV dec-1 and 86 mV dec-1 determined during the electrochemical evaluation. Remarkably, the NiCo-HMT electrode exhibited a double-layer capacitance of 4 mF cm-2 for hydrogen evolution and 23 mF cm-2 for oxygen evolution, while maintaining remarkable stability even after continuous operation for 20 hours. This research offers a valuable blueprint for implementing a cost-effective and durable MOF-based bifunctional catalytic system that has proven to be effective for complete water splitting. Decomposition of water under higher current densities is crucial for effective long-term generation and commercial consumption of hydrogen.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is frequently seen in the Western population. Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (LARS) is effective in managing this condition. Obesity is strongly associated with GERD, and with the rising rate of obesity, there is, therefore, a concurrently increasing frequency of LARS performed. We aim to review the outcomes of LARS in patients with obesity, including the recurrence of GERD symptoms and peri-operative complications. A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed for articles from June 1992 to June 2022. The literature was reviewed for outcomes of LARS in patients with obesity (BMI≥30). Eligibility criteria included specific BMI, study design, type of surgery, and outcomes. The recurrence of symptoms and peri-operative complications were assessed. Thirty-one studies were thoroughly reviewed. Nine studies (five retrospective and four prospective) were selected for meta-analysis using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flow, which included 1,499 patients with obesity and 5,521 without. Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication was the most common procedure performed. The recurrence of symptoms was significantly lower in patients without obesity (p=0.0001). There was no statistically significant difference between patients with and without obesity in peri-operative complications, re-intervention, and early return to theatres. A higher recurrence rate of GERD symptoms post-LARS was reported in patients with obesity. Further research is required to decrease such risks and propose different methods, such as weight loss prior to surgery or Roux-en-Y (R&Y) gastric bypass. Risks and benefits should be considered by clinicians prior to offering LARS to patients with obesity.

The diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) technique is known for its capability to differentiate the diffusion of water molecules between cancerous and non-cancerous cervix tissues, which enhances the accuracy of detection. Despite the potential of DWI-MRI, its accuracy is limited by technical factors influencing in vivo data acquisition, thus impacting the quantification of radiomics features. This study aimed to measure the radiomics stability of manual and semi-automated segmentation on contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE)-enhanced DWI-MRI cervical images. Eighty diffusion-weighted MRI images were obtained from patients diagnosed with cervical cancer, and an active contour model was used to analyze the data. Radiomics analysis was conducted to extract the first statistical order, shape, and textural features with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) measurement. The results of the CLAHE segmentation approach showed a marked improvement when compared to the manual and semi-automated segmentation methods, with an ICC value of 0.990 ± 0.005 (p<0.05), compared to 0.864 ± 0.033 (p<0.05) and 0.554 ± 0.185 (p>0.05), respectively. The CLAHE segmentation displayed a higher level of robustness than the manual groups in terms of the features present in both categories. Thus, CLAHE segmentation is owing to its potential to generate radiomics features that are more durable and consistent.

Pakistan has among the highest rates of maternal, perinatal, and neonatal mortality globally. Many of these deaths are potentially preventable with low-cost, scalable interventions delivered through community-based health worker programs to the most remote communities. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 10,264 households during the baseline phase of a cluster randomized controlled trial (cRCT) in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan from June-August 2021. The survey was conducted through a stratified, two-stage sampling design with the objective of estimating the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) within the study catchment area, and informing implementation of the cRCT. Study outcomes were self-reported and included neonatal death, stillbirth, health facility delivery, maternal death, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), and Lady Health Worker (LHW) coverage. Summary statistics (proportions and rates) were weighted according to the sampling design, and mixed-effects Poisson regression was conducted to explore the relationship between LHW coverage and maternal/newborn outcomes. We identified 7,600 women who gave birth in the past five years, among whom 13% reported experiencing PPH. The maternal mortality ratio was 225 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births (95% confidence interval [CI] 137-369). Among 12,376 total births, the stillbirth rate was 41.4 per 1,000 births (95% CI 36.8-46.7) and the perinatal mortality rate was 53.0 per 1,000 births (95% CI 47.6-59.0). Among 11,863 live births, NMR was 16.2 per 1,000 live births (95% CI 13.6-19.3) and 65% were delivered at a health facility. LHW home visits were associated with declines in PPH (risk ratio [RR] 0.89 per each additional visit, 95% CI 0.83-0.96) and late neonatal mortality (RR 0.80, 95% CI 0.67-0.97). Intracluster correlation coefficients were also estimated to inform the planning of future trials. The high rates of maternal, perinatal, and neonatal death in Gilgit-Baltistan continue to fall behind targets of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most sought-after materials in the domain of supercapacitors and can be tailored to accommodate diverse compositions, making them amenable to facile functionalization. However, their intrinsic specific capacitance as well as energy density is minimal, which hinders their usage for advanced energy storage applications. Therefore, herein, we have prepared six electrodes, i.e., Ni-Co-Mn MOFs, polyaniline (PANI), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) along with their novel nanocomposites, i.e., C1, C2, and C3, comprising MOFs : PANI : rGO in a mass ratio of 100 : 1 : 0.5, 100 : 1 : 1, and 100 : 1 : 10, respectively. The polyaniline conducting polymer and rGO enabled efficient electron transport, enhanced charge storage processes, substantial surface area facilitating higher loading of active materials, promoting electrochemical reactions, and ultimately enhanced nanocomposite system performance. As a result, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques confirmed the successful synthesis and revealed distinct morphological features of the materials. Following electrochemical testing, it was observed that composition C2 exhibited the highest performance, demonstrating a groundbreaking specific capacitance of 1007 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. The device showed a good energy density of 25.11 W h kg-1 and a power density of 860 W kg-1. Remarkably, the device demonstrated a capacity retention of 115% after 1500 cycles, which is a clear indication of the wettability factor, according to the literature. The power law indicated b-values in a range of 0.58-0.64, verifying the hybrid-type behavior of supercapacitors.

A small zero-order resonant antenna based on the composite right-left-handed (CRLH) principle is designed and fabricated without metallic vias at 30 GHz to have patch-like radiation. The mirror images of two CRLH structures are connected to design the antenna without via holes. The equivalent circuit, parameter extraction, and dispersion diagram are studied to analyze the characteristics of the CRLH antenna. The antenna was fabricated and experimentally verified. The measured realized gain of the antenna is 5.35 dBi at 30 GHz. The designed antenna is free of spurious resonance over a band width of 10 GHz. A passive beamforming array is designed using the proposed CRLH antenna and the Butler matrix. A substrate integrated waveguide is used to implement the Butler matrix. The CRLH antennas are connected to four outputs of a 4×4 Butler matrix. The scanning angles are 12∘, -68∘, 64∘, and -11∘ for excitations from port 1 to port 4 of the 4×4 Butler matrix feeding the CRLH antenna.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a heterogeneous and complex disease with numerous pathophysiologic variants. ~40% of patients succumb due to the progression of the disease, making RCC the most fatal of the common urologic malignancies. Prognostic factors are indicators of the progression of the disease, and the precise determination of these factors is important for evaluating and managing RCC. In the present study, it was aimed to determine and find associations among the histopathological features of RCCs and their impact on survival and metastasis. This is a cross-sectional study of RCC cases who have undergone partial or radical nephrectomy from March 2008 to October 2021 and have been pathologically reviewed at Shorsh General Teaching Hospital in Sulaimani, Iraq. The data in the pathology studies were supplemented by follow-up of the patients to obtain information about survival, recurrence and metastasis. In total, 228 cases of RCC were identified, among whom 60.5% were men and 39.5% were women, with a median age of 51 years. The main tumor types were clear cell RCC (71.1%), papillary RCC (13.6%), and chromophobe RCC (11%). Various measures of aggressiveness, including tumor necrosis, sarcomatoid change, microvascular invasion, and parameters of invasiveness (invasion of the renal sinus and other structures), were significantly correlated with each other, and they were also associated with reduced overall survival and an increased risk of metastasis on univariate analysis. However, on multivariate analysis, only tumor size and grade, and microvascular invasion retained statistical significance and were associated with a lower survival rate. In conclusion, pathological parameters have an impact on prognosis in RCC. The most consistent prognostic factors can be tumor size and grade, and microvascular invasion.

The effects of graphene addition on the phase formation and superconducting properties of (Bi1.6Pb0.4)Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi-2223) ceramics synthesized using the co-precipitation method were systematically investigated. Series samples of Bi-2223 were added with different weight percentages (x = 0.0, 0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 wt.%) of graphene nanoparticles. The samples' phase formations and crystal structures were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the superconducting critical temperatures, Tc, were investigated using alternating current susceptibility (ACS). The XRD showed that a high-Tc phase, Bi-2223, and a small low-Tc phase, Bi-2212, dominated the samples. The volume fraction of the Bi-2223 phase increased for the sample with x = 0.3 wt.% and 0.5 wt.% of graphene and slightly reduced at x = 1.0 wt.%. The ACS showed that the onset critical temperature, Tc-onset, phase lock-in temperature, Tcj, and coupling peak temperature, TP, decreased when graphene was added to the samples. The susceptibility-temperature (χ'-T) and (χ″-T) curves of each sample, where χ' and χ″ are the real and imaginary parts of the susceptibility, respectively, were obtained. The critical temperature of the pure sample was also measured.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of two main treatment modalities of microdebrider and carbon dioxide laser excision for juvenile onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Methods: The retrospective study was conducted in May 2021 at the Combined Military Hospital, Kharian, Pakistan, and comprised data from July 1, 2007, to January 31, 2020, of patients of either gender aged 2-12 years who were treated for juvenile onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis either with microdebrider excision in group A or carbon dioxide laser excision in group B. Extent and severity of disease was documented as per the Derkay-Coltrera grading system. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 39 patients, 23(59%) were girls and 16(41%) were boys. The overall mean age at the time of procedure was 6.62±2.06 years. Group A had 22(56.4%) subjects; 15(68.2%) girls and 7(31.8%) boys, while group B had 17(43.6%) cases; 8(47%) girls and 9(53%) boys. The mean operative time for group A was 40.91±11.50 minutes and for group B it was 60.59±19.51 minutes. Postoperative breathing and oedema status was better for group A (p<0.05), while there was no significant difference regarding postoperative pain, residual disease and repeat surgeries (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Microdebrider was found to be superior to carbon dioxide laser excision in the treatment of juvenile onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.

Generally, cardiac masses are initially suspected on routine echocardiography. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is further performed to differentiate tumors from pseudo-tumors and to characterize the cardiac masses based on their appearance on T1/T2-weighted images, detection of perfusion and demonstration of gadolinium-based contrast agent uptake on early and late gadolinium enhancement images. Further evaluation of cardiac masses by CMR is critical because unnecessary surgery can be avoided by better tissue characterization. Different cardiac tissues have different T1 and T2 relaxation times, principally owing to different internal biochemical environments surrounding the protons. In CMR, the signal intensity from a particular tissue depends on its T1 and T2 relaxation times and its proton density. CMR uses this principle to differentiate between various tissue types by weighting images based on their T1 or T2 relaxation times. Generally, tumor cells are larger, edematous, and have associated inflammatory reactions. Higher free water content of the neoplastic cells and other changes in tissue composition lead to prolonged T1/T2 relaxation times and thus an inherent contrast between tumors and normal tissue exists. Overall, these biochemical changes create an environment where different cardiac masses produce different signal intensity on their T1- weighted and T2- weighted images that help to discriminate between them. In this review article, we have provided a detailed description of the core CMR imaging protocol for evaluation of cardiac masses. We have also discussed the basic features of benign cardiac tumors as well as the role of CMR in evaluation and further tissue characterization of these tumors.

Recent years have witnessed significant progress in quantum communication and quantum internet with the emerging quantum photonic chips, whose characteristics of scalability, stability, and low cost, flourish and open up new possibilities in miniaturized footprints. Here, we provide an overview of the advances in quantum photonic chips for quantum communication, beginning with a summary of the prevalent photonic integrated fabrication platforms and key components for integrated quantum communication systems. We then discuss a range of quantum communication applications, such as quantum key distribution and quantum teleportation. Finally, the review culminates with a perspective on challenges towards high-performance chip-based quantum communication, as well as a glimpse into future opportunities for integrated quantum networks.

BACKGROUND: A complicated interplay between radiation doses, tumour microenvironment (TME), and host immune system is linked to the active participation of immune response. OBJECTIVE: The effects of single targeted 2 Gy and 8 Gy gamma-ray irradiations on the immune cell population (lymphocytes, B-cells, T-cells, neutrophils, eosinophils, and macrophages) in EMT6 mouse-bearing tumour models was investigated. METHODS: The effects of both irradiation doses in early (96 hours) and acute phase (5 to 11 days) post-irradiation on immune parameters were monitored in blood circulation and TME using flow cytometry. Simultaneously, selected cytokines related to immune cells within the TME were measured using multiplex ELISA. RESULTS: A temporary reduction in systemic total white blood count (TWBC) resulted from an early phase (96 hours) of gamma-ray irradiation at 2 Gy and 8 Gy compared to sham control group. No difference was obtained in the acute phase. Neutrophils dominated among other immune cells in TME in sham control group. Eosinophils in TME was significantly increased after 8 Gy treatment in acute phase compared to sham control (p< 0.005). Furthermore, the increment of tumour necrosis (TNF)-α, eotaxin and interleukin (IL)-7 (p< 0.05) in both treatment groups and phases were associated with anti-tumour activities within TME by gamma-ray irradiation. CONCLUSION: The temporary changes in immune cell populations within systemic circulation and TME induced by different doses of gamma-ray irradiation correlated with suppression of several pro-tumorigenic cytokines in mouse-bearing EMT6 tumour models.

Synovial sarcoma is a mesenchymal spindle cell tumor. Primary pancreatic sarcomas are extremely rare. The present study describes a rare case of synovial sarcoma in the head of the pancreas. A 35-year-old male presented with left upper quadrant abdominal pain. An endoscopic ultrasound examination revealed a complex solid-cystic lesion in the pancreatic head. He had undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure). A histological examination yielded negative results for AE1/AE3, CD10, S100, CD34, desmin, smooth muscle actin, ß-catenin, CD117, HMB45, chromogranin and synaptophysin. However, the results were positive for TLEI and vimentin, which is consistent with synovial sarcoma. Synovial sarcoma is a soft tissue malignant tumor. Primary pancreatic sarcomas frequently present as large, high-grade tumors in the pancreatic head. Histologically, there are several types of synovial sarcoma, such as monophasic, biphasic and poorly differentiated. A histological examination is necessary for the diagnosis as the imaging findings are not specifically suggestive of synovial sarcoma. The preferred course of treatment is complete resection with wide margins, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Primary mesenchymal tumors of the pancreas are extremely uncommon. As a result, a diagnosis requires careful evaluation. Surgical resection is the main modality of treatment.

RESUMO

Urethral duplication is a rare disease with diverse clinical symptoms and more common in male; only fewer than 300 instances have been reported. In this case report, a 20-year-old male patient came to the urology polyclinic with two holes on the glans penis, accompanied by daily clear discharge in the upper hole. This complaint has been experienced since birth. The patient underwent an excision of the dorsal accessory urethra to correct penile anomalies.
