RESUMO

Targeted grazing to control undesirable plant species is increasingly of interest across a diversity of ecosystems, particularly as an alternative or complement to widely used herbicides. However, there are limited comprehensive evaluations of targeted grazing that evaluate both invasive species management effectiveness and potential negative effects on the ecosystem. Phragmites australis, a tall-statured, dense perennial invasive grass from Eurasia, is a pervasive problem in wetlands across the North American continent. As with many invasive species where management has historically relied on herbicides and resistance is a growing concern, land managers seek viable alternatives that have minimal negative ecosystem impacts. Grazing has been used for millennia to manage native Phragmites in Europe. Similarly, in its invasive range within North America, small-scale studies suggest Phragmites may be suppressed by grazers. Yet, the effectiveness of grazing at large scales and its effects on broader ecosystem properties remain largely unknown. We evaluated the influence of targeted grazing on vegetation, soil nutrients, and water nutrients over two years in large plots (∼300x the size of previous studies). We also tested the effects of mowing, a treatment that can be used to facilitate grazer access to large, dense Phragmites stands. In line with our predictions, we found that cattle grazing effectively suppressed invasive Phragmites over two years. Mowing reduced litter, and moderately reduced standing dead Phragmites, both of which suppress native plant germination in this system. However, these reductions in Phragmites were not accompanied by indications of native plant community recovery, as we had optimistically predicted. Despite the potential for grazing to reduce nutrient sequestration by plants and fertilize soils, we were surprised to find no clear negative effects of grazing on nutrient mobilization to groundwater or floodwater. Taken together, our findings indicate that targeted grazing, when implemented at broad scales over short time frames, is effective at achieving invasive plant management goals without sizable nutrient impacts. However, additional steps will be needed to achieve the restoration of diverse, robust native plant communities.

BACKGROUND: Abrocitinib, an oral, once-daily, Janus kinase 1-selective inhibitor, is efficacious in moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis with a manageable long-term safety profile. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to provide updated integrated long-term safety results for abrocitinib from available data accrued up to a maximum of almost 4 years in patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis from the JADE clinical development program. METHODS: Analysis included 3802 patients (exposure: 5213.9 patient-years) from the phase II monotherapy study (NCT02780167) and the phase III studies JADE MONO-1 (NCT03349060), JADE MONO-2 (NCT03575871), JADE TEEN (NCT03796676), JADE COMPARE (NCT03720470), JADE DARE (NCT04345367; 200 mg only), JADE REGIMEN (NCT03627767), and JADE EXTEND (NCT03422822; data cutoff 25 September, 2021). Data from patients receiving one or more doses of abrocitinib 200 mg or 100 mg were pooled in a consistent-dose cohort (patients were allocated to receive the same abrocitinib dose throughout exposure in the qualifying parent study and/or long-term study) or a variable-dose cohort (patients received open-label abrocitinib 200 mg; responders were randomized to abrocitinib 200 mg, 100 mg, or placebo, and could then receive abrocitinib 200 mg plus topical corticosteroids as rescue therapy). Incidence rates of adverse events of special interest were assessed. Cox regression analysis of risk factors for herpes zoster and serious infections was performed. RESULTS: Overall, this safety analysis of long-term data up to a maximum of ~ 4 years of abrocitinib exposure does not indicate any changes from the previously reported risk profile. The most frequent serious infections (per Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities preferred term) with consistent-dose abrocitinib 200 mg and 100 mg were herpes zoster (0.5% and 0.2%), pneumonia (0.2% with either dose), and herpes simplex (0.1% with either dose). Risk factors for herpes zoster were a history of herpes zoster, abrocitinib 200-mg dose, age ≥ 65 years, absolute lymphocyte count < 1 × 103/mm3 before the event, and residing in Asia. For serious infections, > 100 kg body weight was a risk factor. Incidence rate/100 patient-years (95% confidence interval) with the consistent abrocitinib 200-mg and 100-mg dose combined was higher in older (aged ≥ 65 years) patients versus younger (aged 18 to < 65 years) patients for serious adverse events (17.6 [11.7‒25.4] vs 6.7 [5.8‒7.8]), malignancy excluding non-melanoma skin cancer (2.4 [0.6‒6.0] vs 0.1 [0.0‒0.4]), non-melanoma skin cancer (2.4 [0.6‒6.1] vs 0.2 [0.1‒0.4]), lymphopenia (3.5 [1.3‒7.6] vs 0.1 [0.0‒0.3]), and venous thromboembolism (1.7 [0.4‒5.1] vs 0.1 [0.0‒0.3]). Incident rate/100 patient-years (95% confidence interval) of non-melanoma skin cancer with the consistent abrocitinib 200-mg and 100-mg dose combined was higher in current/former smokers (0.9 [0.4‒1.6]) vs never-smokers (0.0 [0.0‒0.1]). CONCLUSIONS: This safety update showed a consistent profile for abrocitinib with no new safety signals and continues to support that abrocitinib has a manageable long-term safety profile in patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. Risk of specific adverse events was higher in certain patient populations, especially those aged ≥ 65 years. Abrocitinib is an approved treatment for people with moderate or severe atopic dermatitis, also known as AD or atopic eczema. Abrocitinib is a tablet that is taken by mouth once a day. This safety analysis looked at the side effects of treatment in a large group of adults and adolescents with moderate or severe AD who took abrocitinib up to a maximum of almost 4 years. This analysis also looked at which people were more likely to have certain side effects after taking abrocitinib. The results from this analysis were similar to those of previous safety analyses with abrocitinib, with no new side effects. Infections such as shingles, pneumonia, or herpes simplex can occur during treatment with abrocitinib. Shingles was more likely to occur in people who previously had shingles before taking abrocitinib, or who took the higher dose of abrocitinib (200 mg), or were 65 years of age or older, or had certain blood test results, or lived in Asia. People who are 65 years of age or older and took abrocitinib were more likely to develop some types of cancer, have certain abnormal blood test results, or develop blood clots in the veins than people with AD who were younger and took abrocitinib. Current or former smokers with AD who took abrocitinib were more likely to develop skin cancer (but not melanoma) than people with AD who took abrocitinib but have never smoked. This analysis further shows that abrocitinib had manageable safety in patients with moderate-to-severe AD. BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is frequently associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR). Dupilumab is an effective treatment for pediatric AD, although the effect on atopic comorbidities in pediatric AD patients is limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of asthma and AR in pediatric AD patients starting dupilumab treatment and to evaluate the effect of dupilumab on these comorbidities. METHODS: This study included pediatric AD patients (aged 3-17 years) treated with dupilumab between 2019 and 2023. Patients were screened at baseline by a pulmonologist for the presence of asthma and AR. Screening included evaluation of medical history and current symptoms, spirometry (including Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 s (FEV1)), Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO), and measurement of aeroallergen-specific IgE levels. In patients diagnosed with comorbid asthma and/or AR, measurements were repeated at weeks 16 and 52. Spirometry measurements, FeNO, and aeroallergen-specific IgE levels during treatment were analyzed using a covariance pattern model. RESULTS: Eighty-four patients were included. Asthma was diagnosed in 50 patients (59.5%) and AR in 72 patients (85.7%). Baseline FeNO levels were elevated in both patients with (29.0 ppb (95% CI 22.0-54.0)) and without asthma (26.0 ppb (95% CI 22.0-30.0)). During treatment, FeNO levels decreased (p < .001) and FEV1 scores increased (p < .001) in patients with asthma. In patients with asthma and/or AR, all aeroallergen-specific IgE levels decreased between 61.3% and 89.1% at 52 weeks of treatment. CONCLUSION: One year of dupilumab treatment, primarily indicated for AD, resulted in a significant improvement in comorbid asthma and a profound decrease in aeroallergen-specific IgE levels in patients with asthma and/or AR.

Natural-abundance phosphomolybdic acid (H3(Mo12PO40) ‧12H2O, 0.181-0.552 g Mo/mL) solutions were irradiated with 12.9 MeV protons on a GE PETtrace cyclotron using an adapted standard liquid target. Technetium-94m (94mTc) was produced through the 94Mo(p,n)94mTc nuclear reaction with saturation yields of up to 53 ± 6 MBq/µA. End of bombardment activities of 161 ± 17 MBq and 157 ± 7 MBq were achieved for the 0.552 g Mo/mL solution (10 µA for 30 min) and 0.181 g Mo/mL solution (15 µA for 60 min), respectively. No visible degradation of the niobium target body and foil were seen during the irradiations of up to 15 µA for 60 min. The produced 94mTc was separated from the target phosphomolybdic acid solution with >98% recovery using an aqueous biphasic extraction resin. Compared to previous reported liquid target methods for 94mTc production, the better production yield, in-target solution stability during irradiation and 94mTc separation recovery of phosphomolybdic acid makes it a very promising target material for routine clinical 94mTc production at medical facilities with liquid targets already installed for 18F production.

Materials with field-tunable polarization are of broad interest to condensed matter sciences and solid-state device technologies. Here, using hydrogen (H) donor doping, we modify the room temperature metallic phase of a perovskite nickelate NdNiO3 into an insulating phase with both metastable dipolar polarization and space-charge polarization. We then demonstrate transient negative differential capacitance in thin film capacitors. The space-charge polarization caused by long-range movement and trapping of protons dominates when the electric field exceeds the threshold value. First-principles calculations suggest the polarization originates from the polar structure created by H doping. We find that polarization decays within ~1 second which is an interesting temporal regime for neuromorphic computing hardware design, and we implement the transient characteristics in a neural network to demonstrate unsupervised learning. These discoveries open new avenues for designing ferroelectric materials and electrets using light-ion doping.

In ferroelectric switching, an applied electric field switches the system between two polar symmetry-equivalent states. In this work, we use first-principles calculations to explore the polar states of hydrogen-doped samarium nickelate (SNO) at a concentration of 1/4 hydrogen per Ni. The inherent tilt pattern of SNO and the presence of the interstitial hydrogen present an insurmountable energy barrier to switch these polar states to their symmetry-equivalent states under inversion. We find a sufficiently low barrier to move the localized electron to a neighboring NiO6octahedron, a state unrelated by symmetry but equal in energy under a square epitaxial strain (a = b), resulting in a large change in polarization. We term this unconventional ferroelectric a 'fraternal-twin' ferroelectric.

Since 2017, a self-sampling device has been introduced to the Dutch population-based screening program to enable higher participation rates. However, routine triage cytology cannot be performed on self-sampling material. Methylation is an alternative triage method that can be performed directly on DNA extracted from self-samples. Recently, we tested a set of 15 published cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 or worse (CIN3+)-specific methylation markers and found a panel of 3 markers with a sensitivity of 82% and a specificity of 74%. In this study, we determined the sensitivity and specificity of 2 commercial assays using quantitative methylation-specific PCR. Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) has increased exponentially in many developed countries, including Australia and New Zealand. This Expert Position Statement on Catheter and Surgical Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation from the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ) recognises healthcare factors, expertise and expenditure relevant to the Australian and New Zealand healthcare environments including considerations of potential implications for First Nations Peoples. The statement is cognisant of international advice but tailored to local conditions and populations, and is intended to be used by electrophysiologists, cardiologists and general physicians across all disciplines caring for patients with AF. They are also intended to provide guidance to healthcare facilities seeking to establish or maintain catheter ablation for AF.

RESUMO

Research has shown a great distrust among youths toward political representatives, who they demand should "listen to the science." However, less research has been done on youths' own trust in science. This study explores and explains how youths who are environmentally active in two different environmental youth organizations relate to science in social media, whether they trust science, and how youths' relation to science creates a discursive context in which they may develop their identity. The study uses the approach of discourse analysis to examine social media content published on Facebook by Fridays for Future Sweden and Fältbiologerna (the Swedish Field Biologists). The study shows (i) how subject positions for scientists and youth are created in relation to one another based on different expressions of youths' trust in science and (ii) how environmental youth organizations, by identifying with science, make youths important actors in the discourse on climate change.

Glycerophospholipids are synthesized primarily in the cytosolic leaflet of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane and must be equilibrated between bilayer leaflets to allow the ER and membranes derived from it to grow. Lipid equilibration is facilitated by integral membrane proteins called "scramblases." These proteins feature a hydrophilic groove allowing the polar heads of lipids to traverse the hydrophobic membrane interior, similar to a credit card moving through a reader. Nevertheless, despite their fundamental role in membrane expansion and dynamics, the identity of most scramblases has remained elusive. Here, combining biochemical reconstitution and molecular dynamics simulations, we show that lipid scrambling is a general feature of protein insertases, integral membrane proteins which insert polypeptide chains into membranes of the ER and organelles disconnected from vesicle trafficking. Our data indicate that lipid scrambling occurs in the same hydrophilic channel through which protein insertion takes place and that scrambling is abolished in the presence of nascent polypeptide chains. We propose that protein insertases could have a so-far-overlooked role in membrane dynamics as scramblases.

BACKGROUND: Podcasts are a valuable educational tool that are convenient and provide on-demand learning. We launched the National Sexually Transmitted Disease Curriculum (NSTDC) Podcast in 2020 to educate health care professionals on sexually transmitted infections with an emphasis on content from peer-reviewed literature relevant to clinical practice. METHODS: We describe the reach and usage data for 31 podcast episodes produced during the first 29 months. Information was obtained via Google Analytics, Apple Podcasts, the podcast hosting platform Buzzsprout, and the Health Professional Application for Training form for listeners who were registered on the NSTDC website. RESULTS: There were more than 21,000 downloads, with an average of 686 downloads per episode. Although 85% of downloads occurred in the United States, podcast visitors were located in 57 countries. The 3 most reported professions/disciplines were registered nurse (39.0%), advanced practice nurse (22.5%), and physician (11.3%). Forty-eight percent of visitors had a primary programmatic focus of sexually transmitted diseases, 24% HIV/AIDs, and 18% primary care. CONCLUSION: The NSTDC Podcast is a highly utilized resource for mobile and on-demand learning for health care professionals who want to expand their knowledge on sexually transmitted infections.

OBJECTIVES: Existing knowledge on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after surgical removal of sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is limited. Moreover, predictors for a better or worse post-operative HRQoL outcome are not known. Our aim was to assess HRQoL in all three health domains (physical, psychological, and social), track its post-operative trajectory, investigate if pre-operative observations could predict distinct post-operative HRQoL outcomes, and evaluate whether physicians' interventions could contribute to improved post-operative HRQoL. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary referral hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-four patients who underwent surgery for an IP were included. They were asked to fill in the Endonasal Endoscopic Sinus and Skull-Base Surgery Questionnaire (EES-Q) pre-operatively, and then 2 weeks, 3 months, and 1 year post-operatively. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Linear mixed models analyses were performed to evaluate the overall post-operative HRQoL and the separate health domains, as well as the impact of specific variables (sex, age, American Society of Anaesthesiologists [ASA] classification, smoker, Krouse staging, pre-operative EES-Q score, type of surgery, and post-operative antibiotics) on HRQoL improvement. RESULTS: The total EES-Q score (p < .001) as well as the physical (p < .001), psychological (p = .049), and the social (p = .002) domains significantly improved post-operatively. ASA classification (p = .049), pre-operative EES-Q score (p < .001) and post-operative antibiotics (p = .036) were significant variables. CONCLUSIONS: Overall HRQoL, as well as each of the three health domains, improved significantly. A higher ASA score, a higher pre-operative EES-Q score, and the administration of post-operative antibiotics were significant predictors for better HRQoL recovery post-operatively. Further research is necessary to confirm these results.

BACKGROUND: Pulpotomy procedures aiming to preserve and regenerate the dentin-pulp complex have recently increased exponentially due to developments in the field of biomaterials and tissue engineering in primary and permanent teeth. Although the number of studies in this domain has increased, there is still scarcity of evidence in the current literature. OBJECTIVES: (1) Report the methods of outcome assessment of pulpotomy clinical trials in both primary and permanent teeth; (2) Identify the various bioactive agents and biodegradable scaffolds used in pulpotomy clinical trials in both primary and permanent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review of the literature was performed, including a search of primary studies on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest and Clinicaltrials.gov. A search for controlled trials or randomized controlled trials published between 2012 and 2023 involving primary or permanent teeth receiving partial or full pulpotomy procedures using bioactive/regenerative capping materials was performed. RESULTS: 127 studies out of 1038 articles fulfilled all the inclusion criteria and were included in the current scoping review. More than 90% of the studies assessed clinical and radiographic outcomes. Histological, microbiological, or inflammatory outcomes were measured in only 9.4% of all included studies. Majority of the studies (67.7%) involved primary teeth. 119 studies used non-degradable bioactive cements, while biodegradable scaffolds were used by 32 studies, natural derivates and plant extracts studies were used in only 7 studies. Between 2012 (4 studies) and 2023 (11 studies), there was a general increase in the number of articles published. India, Egypt, Turkey, and Iran were found to have the highest total number of articles published (28, 28,16 and 10 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Pulpotomy studies in both primary and permanent teeth relied mainly on subjective clinical and radiographic outcome assessment methods and seldom analyzed pulpal inflammatory status objectively. The use of biodegradable scaffolds for pulpotomy treatments has been increasing with an apparent global distribution of most of these studies in low- to middle-income countries. However, the development of a set of predictable outcome measures as well as long-term evidence from well conducted clinical trials for novel pulpotomy dressing materials are still required.

PURPOSE: Field-to-susceptibility inversion in quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is ill-posed and needs numerical stabilization through either regularization or oversampling by acquiring data at three or more object orientations. Calculation Of Susceptibility through Multiple Orientations Sampling (COSMOS) is an established oversampling approach and regarded as QSM gold standard. It achieves a well-conditioned inverse problem, requiring rotations by 0°, 60° and 120° in the yz-plane. However, this is impractical in vivo, where head rotations are typically restricted to a range of ±25°. Non-ideal sampling degrades the conditioning with residual streaking artifacts whose mitigation needs further regularization. Moreover, susceptibility anisotropy in white matter is not considered in the COSMOS model, which may introduce additional bias. The current work presents a thorough investigation of these effects in primate brain. METHODS: Gradient-recalled echo (GRE) data of an entire fixed chimpanzee brain were acquired at 7 T (350 µm resolution, 10 orientations) including ideal COSMOS sampling and realistic rotations in vivo. Comparisons of the results included ideal COSMOS, in-vivo feasible acquisitions with 3-8 orientations and single-orientation iLSQR QSM. RESULTS: In-vivo feasible and optimal COSMOS yielded high-quality susceptibility maps with increased SNR resulting from averaging multiple acquisitions. COSMOS reconstructions from non-ideal rotations about a single axis required additional L2-regularization to mitigate residual streaking artifacts. CONCLUSION: In view of unconsidered anisotropy effects, added complexity of the reconstruction, and the general challenge of multi-orientation acquisitions, advantages of sub-optimal COSMOS schemes over regularized single-orientation QSM appear limited in in-vivo settings.

Objective: Oscillations figure prominently as neurological disease hallmarks and neuromodulation targets. To detect oscillations in a neuron's spiking, one might attempt to seek peaks in the spike train's power spectral density (PSD) which exceed a flat baseline. Yet for a non-oscillating neuron, the PSD is not flat: The recovery period ("RP", the post-spike drop in spike probability, starting with the refractory period) introduces global spectral distortion. An established "shuffling" procedure corrects for RP distortion by removing the spectral component explained by the inter-spike interval (ISI) distribution. However, this procedure sacrifices oscillation-related information present in the ISIs, and therefore in the PSD. We asked whether point process models (PPMs) might achieve more selective RP distortion removal, thereby enabling improved oscillation detection. Approach: In a novel "residuals" method, we first estimate the RP duration (nr) from the ISI distribution. We then fit the spike train with a PPM that predicts spike likelihood based on the time elapsed since the most recent of any spikes falling within the preceding nr milliseconds. Finally, we compute the PSD of the model's residuals. Main results: We compared the residuals and shuffling methods' ability to enable accurate oscillation detection with flat baseline-assuming tests. Over synthetic data, the residuals method generally outperformed the shuffling method in classification of true- versus false-positive oscillatory power, principally due to enhanced sensitivity in sparse spike trains. In single-unit data from the internal globus pallidus (GPi) and ventrolateral anterior thalamus (VLa) of a parkinsonian monkey -- in which alpha-beta oscillations (8-30 Hz) were anticipated -- the residuals method reported the greatest incidence of significant alpha-beta power, with low firing rates predicting residuals-selective oscillation detection. Significance: These results encourage continued development of the residuals approach, to support more accurate oscillation detection. Improved identification of oscillations could promote improved disease models and therapeutic technologies.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare reliability, costs, and radiation dose of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to MRI and CT in measuring muscle mass for the diagnosis of sarcopenia. METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive DXA scans performed in surgically menopausal women from November 2019 until March 2020 were analyzed by two observers. Observers analyzed muscle mass of the lower limbs in every scan twice. Reliability was assessed by calculating inter- and intra-observer variability. Reliability from CT and MRI as well as radiation dose from CT and DXA were collected from literature. Costs for each type of scan were calculated according to the guidelines for economic evaluation of the Dutch National Health Care Institute. RESULTS: The 34 participants had a median age of 58 years (IQR 53-65) and a median body mass index of 24.6 (IQR 21.7-29.7). Inter-observer variability had an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.997 (95% CI 0.994-0.998) with a relative variability of 0.037 ± 0.022%. Regarding intra-observer variability, observer 1 had an ICC of 0.998 (95% CI 0.996-0.999) with a relative variability of 0.019 ± 0.016% and observer 2 had an ICC of 0.997 (95% CI 0.993-0.998) with a relative variability of 0.016 ± 0.011%. DXA costs were €62, CT €77, and MRI €195. The estimated radiation dose of CT was 2.5-3.0 mSv, for DXA this was 2-4 µSv. CONCLUSIONS: DXA has lower costs and a lower radiation dose, with low inter- and intra-observer variability, compared to CT and MRI for assessing lower limb muscle mass. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Netherlands Trial Register; NL8068. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: DXA is a good alternative for CT and MRI in assessing lower limb muscle mass, with lower costs and lower radiation dose, while inter-observer and intra-observer variability are low. KEY POINTS: • Screening for sarcopenia should be optimized as the population ages. • DXA outperformed CT and MRI in the measured metrics. • DXA validity should be further evaluated as an alternative to CT and MRI for sarcopenia evaluation.

Aims/Hypothesis: Only a few studies reported the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Understanding recent trends in diabetes is vital for planning future diabetes care. This study updated national trends in the prevalence and incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the Netherlands from 2004-2020. Methods: The DIAbetes, MANagement and Treatment (DIAMANT) cohort was used. A cross-sectional design with yearly measurements for the study period was used. The prevalence was calculated by dividing the total number of people with T2D by the total number of all residents. The incidence was calculated by dividing new cases of T2D by the resident population at risk during the calendar year of interest. Results: Among men, the prevalence of T2D in the Netherlands increased from 2.3% in 2004 to 6.3% in 2020. Women's prevalence increased from 2.3% in 2004 to 5.3% in 2020. During 2005-2009, the incidence rate for both men and women was relatively stable Between 2010 and 2020, the incidence rate fell about 1.5 per 1000 in both men and women. Conclusion: From 2004-2020, the prevalence of T2D in the Netherlands more than doubled, with a decreasing incidence from 2010 onwards.

This review provides an overview of the current status of this implant device including technical considerations, surgical outcomes and potential advantages and disadvantages compared to alternatives such as the artificial urinary sphincter.

OBJECTIVE: Given the lack of a definitive treatment and the poor prognosis of patients with diffuse midline glioma (DMG) and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), socioeconomic status (SES) may affect treatment access and therefore survival. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between SES and treatment modalities, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) in children with DMG/DIPG. METHODS: A retrospective, single-institution review was conducted of medical records of patients ≤ 18 years of age who had DMG or DIPG that was diagnosed between 2000 and 2022. Patient demographics, surgical interventions, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, clinical trial enrollment, and medical care-related travel were extracted. SES variables (education and mean income) for associated patient census tracts were collected and stratified. Statistical analysis using unpaired t-tests, chi-square analysis, and log-rank tests was conducted. RESULTS: Of the 96 patients who met the inclusion criteria, the majority were female (59%) and non-Hispanic White (57%). The median PFS, median OS, and time from diagnosis to treatment did not differ between races/ethnicities or sex. Ninety-one of 96 patients had census tract data available. Patients from higher-income census tracts (> 50% of families with annual household income greater than $50,000) had a longer median OS (480 vs 235 days, p < 0.001) and traveled significantly longer distances for medical care (1550 vs 1114 miles, p = 0.048) than families from lower-income census tracts. Patients from the highest education quartile traveled significantly farther for treatment than the lowest education quartile (mean 2964 vs 478 miles, p = 0.047). Patients who received both oral and intravenous chemotherapy were more likely to be from higher-income census tracts than those who received intravenous or no chemotherapy. Duration of PFS, rates of clinical trial enrollment, biopsy rates, H3K27 mutation status, ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement rates, and radiotherapy rates were not associated with SES variables. CONCLUSIONS: Patients from families from higher-income census tracts experienced longer OS and traveled farther for treatment. Patients from families from higher-education-level census tracts traveled more often for treatment. The authors' findings suggest that SES influences DMG and DIPG OS. More studies should be done to understand the role of SES in the outcomes of children with DMG/DIPG.
