RESUMO

This qualitative study was conducted to examine the relationship between Muslim midwives' spiritual values and ethical orientations and their attitudes towards uterine transplantation. The phenomenological study sample group consisted of students in the Midwifery undergraduate programme of a public university in Istanbul (n:26). The data were collected in semi-structured focus group interviews. It was among the student midwives, it was determined that some students rejected uterine transplantation with thoughts such as "I am a Muslim, according to my religious belief, I should go to the grave without damaging my organs" or "This transplantation is not a vital necessity", as well as students who considered uterine transplantation as religious and ethically appropriate. It was determined that midwife candidates who will provide reproductive health services have different ethical and moral views regarding uterus transplantation, and there are some who see this method as religiously acceptable, and there are also students who emphasize that it is not suitable for Islam. In addition, training programs are planned to increase students' awareness and knowledge on this subject, aiming to be beneficial to the women they will care for in the future.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the postpartum hemorrhage, perineal integrity, and breastfeeding results of mothers who underwent oxytocin induction in the first stage of labor in the early postpartum period. METHODS: This single-center observational case-control study was conducted in the obstetric unit of a public hospital in Istanbul. The study sampling included 44 pregnant women who received oxytocin induction (case group) and 44 pregnant women who did not receive oxytocin (control group). The Personal Information Form, LATCH Breastfeeding Assessment Tool, Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale, Redness, Edema, Ecchymosis, Discharge, and Approximation Scale, and Postpartum Hemorrhage Collection Bag were used in data collection, and pad follow-up was carried out. RESULTS: The amount of hemorrhage in the first 24 h of the postpartum period and the mean Redness, Edema, Ecchymosis, Discharge, and Approximation Scale score were significantly higher in the case group. While 47.7% of the oxytocin-induced women had 1st or 2nd, and 11.4% had 3rd or 4th degrees of lacerations, 20.5% of the control group had 1st or 2nd, and 2.3% had 3rd or 4th degrees of lacerations. There was no significant difference between the mean scores of the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale and LATCH Breastfeeding Assessment Tool in both groups. CONCLUSION: According to the study findings, it was determined that oxytocin induction administered in the first stage of labor increased hemorrhage and perineal trauma in the early postpartum period but did not affect the results of breastfeeding. Clinical Trial Registration Number: NCT04441125.

RESUMO

This study aimed to explore the correlation between cyberchondria levels, depression risk, and the quality of life among female students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was conducted with 534 female students enrolled in a public university. Participants were asked to complete a Personal Information Form, Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and "Short Form-36 (SF-36)" questionnaire. The findings from the multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the level of cyberchondria increased the depression risk by 0.06 times among students. Additionally, nonsmokers were found to have a depression risk that was 4.06 times lower than smokers. A negative and weak correlation was observed between the total score of the CSS and the SF-36 survey. Based on the study's results, it can be concluded that the participants exhibited a moderate level of cyberchondria. Moreover, the study revealed a decreased quality of life and an increased risk of depression in participants as their level of cyberchondria increased. In order to mitigate the adverse impact of current and future health crises, it is imperative to prioritize organizing educational programs aimed at enhancing the e-health literacy level among female students, along with interventions to manage cyberchondria behaviors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Changes in activation/inhibition of Sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) and aromatase play an important role in a plethora of diseases. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) modulate multiple molecular pathways and affect a substantial number of physiological and pathological processes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate any possible interaction between aromatase and SIRT1 in SH-SY5Y cells and to see how there is a connection between this interaction and miRNA expression, if there is an interaction. METHODS: In this study, cells were incubated in serum-deprived media for 6, 12, and 24 h. Aromatase and SIRT1 expressions were evaluated by Western blot. The IC50 concentration of SIRT1 activator (SRT1720), SIRT1 inhibitor (EX527), and aromatase inhibitors (letrozole and fadrozole) was determined by the XTT method. Then, CYP19A1 and SIRT1 levels were evaluated in the presence of SIRT1 siRNA or IC50 values for each activator/inhibitor. Finally, CYP19A1, SIRT1 expression and miRNA target gene were assessed with bioinformatic approaches. RESULTS: Aromatase and SIRT1 protein levels were significantly elevated in the cells incubated at 24 h in serum-deprived media (p ≤ 0.05). SIRT1 also positively regulated CYP19A1 in SH-SY5Y cells in media with/without FBS. Serum deprivation depending on time course caused changes in the oxidant/ antioxidant system. While oxidative stress index tended to decrease in the absence of FBS at 24 h compared to the control, it showed a significant decrease at 48 h in a serum-deprived manner (p ≤ 0.001). As a result of bioinformatics analysis, we determined 3 miRNAs that could potentially regulate SIRT1 and CYP19A1. hsa-miR-27a-3p and hsa-miR-181a-5p correlated in terms of their expressions at 24 h compared to 12 h, and there was a significant decrease in the expression of these miRNAs. On the contrary, the expression of hsa-miR-30c-5p significantly increased at 24 h compared to 12 h. CONCLUSION: Considering the results, a direct link between aromatase and SIRT1 was observed in human neuroblastoma cells. The identification of key miRNAs, hsa-miR-27a-3p, hsa-miR-30c-5p, and hsa-miR-181a-5p targeting both aromatase and SIRT1, provides an approach with novel insights on neurology-associated diseases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study intends to address the COVID-19 pandemic process with specific regard to pregnant women, aiming to determine their state-trait anxiety levels. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study has a quantitative design. Ethical permissions were obtained, data were collected digitally, and power analysis was performed for sample size. The sample size was calculated as 656 pregnant women. In the collection of the data, the Personal Information Form, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used. RESULTS: In our study, the majority of pregnant women (86.3%) were concerned about the pandemic process, with more than half thinking that their pregnancy (62.9%) and delivery processes would be affected (66.2%). In the meantime, 60.2% of the pregnant women postponed their health checks and they indicated being most concerned about their babies (57.1%). In 51.2% of the pregnant women, the state anxiety levels were low, and 89.8% of the trait anxiety levels were moderate. CONCLUSIONS: In crisis periods like the pandemic, pregnant women are among the priority groups. Screening, prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of affective disorders in the prenatal period are important for maternal and fetal health.

RESUMO

This study determined the effects of skin-to-skin contact between the mother and the infant during the third stage of labor on postpartum hemorrhage and pain. This assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted with primiparous women. Skin-to-skin contact interventions between the infants and their mothers occurred for 30 min after birth (n = 34), whereas the infants in the control group were provided routine care (n = 34). Data were gathered using a Personal Information Form, the Visual Analog Scale-Pain, postpartum bleeding follow-up bags, and records of blood oxytocin and beta endorphin levels. There was no significant difference in beta-endorphin levels in both groups (p = 0.771), whereas it was determined that the 30th min oxytocin level was significantly higher in the intervention group (The Visual Analog Scale-Pain score at the postpartum sixth hour was significantly lower in the intervention group. It was found that skin-to-skin contact made at the third stage of labor reduced the amount of postpartum hemorrhage. The results of this study suggested that skin-to-skin contact intervention may have beneficial effects on postpartum pain and postpartum hemorrhage in the early postpartum period.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: One of the most significant barriers to social immunization, which is critical in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, is vaccine hesitancy or rejection. The purpose of this study was to determine the acceptance, hesitancy and barriers to COVID-19 vaccines among midwives in Turkey. METHODS: A total of 806 midwives participated in the cross-sectional study, which was conducted online from November 2020 to January 2021. The data were collected by using an Introductory Information Form, Anti-Vaccination Scale - Short Form, and Attitudes to the COVID-19 Vaccine Scale. RESULTS: In all, 17.2% of the midwives in the study had a history of COVID-19 infection, which was confirmed by a PCR test; 69% were exposed to COVID-19 patients; 36.8% had a person diagnosed with COVID-19 with PCR in their family; and 18.1% had a relative die due to COVID-19. In the study, 16.8% of midwives considered getting the COVID-19 vaccine, while the majority (48.8%) stated they would get the vaccine once vaccine safety was established, while 10.5% stated that they did not wish to receive the vaccine. Insufficient phase studies of COVID-19 vaccine studies (75.6%) and insufficient control due to imported COVID-19 vaccines developed (48.1%) were among the most important determinants of COVID-19 vaccine reluctance. CONCLUSIONS: The potential acceptance rate of COVID-19 vaccines by the study midwives was found to be low. The knowledge, confidence and attitude of midwives toward vaccines are important determinants of patients' vaccine acceptance and recommendation.

RESUMO

Ischemia/Reperfusion (I/R) injury is clinically important in many surgical practice including kidney transplantation. It is known that mitochondria have a key role in the intracellular and extracellular signaling pathways of ischemia and reperfusion injury. In this respect, we pointed to explore the probable effects of isolated mitochondria transplantation from MSCs (mesenchymal stem cells), to alleviate ischemia/reperfusion-induced renal injury. Experiments were held on the 48 male Sprague Dawley rats. Groups were divided as Control (C1), I/R-Control (C2), Vehicle-1 (V1), Vehicle-2 (V2), Transplantation-1 (T1) and Transplantation-2 (T2) group. Unilaterally nephrectomy was performed in all groups. In the groups except the control, the left kidneys ischemized for 45 min and then reperfusion was carried out. According to the study groups, isolated mitochondria or vehicle infused into the renal cortex and rats were monitored for 48 h. Following that mentioned procedure, animals were sacrificed and biological samples were taken for physiological, histological and biochemical examinations. The results of present study show that mitochondrial transplantation promoted proliferation and regeneration of tubular cells after renal injury. Moreover, mitochondrial transplantation reduced mitochondrial dynamics-DRP-1 fission protein of tubular cells and reversed renal deficits. Mitochondrial transplantation diminished apoptotic markers including TUNEL and Caspase-3 levels in injured renal cells. Our results provide a direct link between mitochondria dysfunction and ischemia/reperfusion-induced renal injury and suggest a therapeutic effect of transplanting isolated mitochondria obtained from MSCs against renal injury.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To prospectively compare the short-term periodontal effects and survival rates of mandibular lingual canine-to-canine Memotain (CA-Digital, Mettmann, Germany) and five-stranded bonded retainers. METHODS: In all, 52 patients requiring retention after orthodontic treatment were assigned to 2 study groups (n = 26 in each group). Retention was provided by Memotain retainers which were fabricated digitally using CAD-CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology in the first group and by five-stranded retainers which were fabricated manually using a conventional bending method in the second group. The patients were examined at the following time points: 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. Plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, marginal recession, bleeding on probing, failure rate per tooth, and survival rate of retainer wires were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U, Friedman, Wilcoxon signed-rank, and χ2 tests. RESULTS: The differences between the groups were nonsignificant for plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, marginal recession, bleeding on probing, failure rate per tooth and survival rate of retainer wires. Significant differences were observed within the groups throughout the follow-up period for plaque index and probing depth. The survival rates of retainer wires were 77% for the Memotain retainers and 73% for the five-stranded retainers for the 6month follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: Periodontal outcomes and survival rates of Memotain and five-stranded mandibular lingual bonded retainers were similar. Furthermore, periodontal health was maintained and considerably high survival rates were achieved with both retainer types.

RESUMO

Orthodontic retention is defined as maintaining teeth in optimal aesthetic and functional position after treatment. Despite the necessity of retention phase and the factors influencing the stability of the teeth after orthodontic treatment was discussed by the orthodontist for a long time, it is accepted that a retention phase is essential for stability of orthodontic treatment results nowadays. Therefore, the application of a suitable retention method is important both for prevention of relapse after orthodontic treatment and for increasing patient satisfaction. Removable appliances had been used for many years for retention purposes. Later, fixed retainers were introduced to prevent relapse as having a number of advantages, such as better aesthetics, no need for patient cooperation, effectiveness, and suitability for lifelong retention. However, their need for precise bonding technique, fragility, and tendency to cause periodontal problems by weakening oral hygiene are some of their disadvantages.

RESUMO

Central Giant Cell Granuloma (CGCG) is defined by the World Health Organization as an intraosseous lesion consisting of cellular fibrous tissue containing multiple foci of hemorrhage, aggregations of multinucleated giant cells, and occasionally trabeculae of woven bone. An 8-year-old patient presented with painless swelling and bleeding in his upper right canine region was referred to our clinic. Incisional biopsy was confirmed that this was a CGCG. The patient was treated with non-invasive curettage and secondary intention healing. Seven-year follow-up of the patient revealed a complete resolution of the lesion and uneventful eruption of the permanent canine tooth. In this case report, a successful long-term outcome of the conservative treatment of the CGCG was presented.

RESUMO

AIM: Mental retardation (MR) subjects comprise a considerable amount of the community and are susceptible to oral and periodontal problems due to insufficient oral care. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the oral health and periodontal status of MR patients in Turkey with regard to periodontal indices and Decay missed filling teeth (DMFT) scores and compare findings according to severity of the MR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and five MR patients were included to the study and divided into 3 groups according to MR severity diagnoses. Demographic variables like age, gender, disabled sibling, BMI, living an institution and clinical parameters like plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), missing teeth and DMFT scores were recorded from all subjects. Appropriate statistical analyses were used to compare the findings. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between groups according to age, gender, disabled sibling, living status and DMFT scores. Clinical periodontal indices and the number of missing teeth were showed a statistically significant increasing trend with the severity of MR (p < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed significant positive correlations between PI and periodontal disease measures like GI, PD, CAL and BOP and also between PI and DMFT (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The deteriorated teeth condition and deprived periodontal health of MR patients may be most likely caused by the poor oral hygiene and may be worsen with the severity of the MR. Clinical significance: Knowledge of oral and periodontal status of mental retardation patients has great importance for public health and family education.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the implant stability with the addition of local application of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) during the osseointegration of 2 different dental implant surfaces using rabbit tibia model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six dental implants, 28 of hydrophilic surface (SLActive) and 28 of hydrophobic surface (OsseoSpeed), were placed in 14 mature New Zealand rabbits. The rabbits each received both SLActive and OsseoSpeed implants per tibia, and bFGF was applied locally on 1 randomly selected tibia. Half of the subjects were killed at the fourth week of healing period, and the other half were killed at the twelfth week. Stabilization was assessed using resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and removal torque value (RTV). RESULTS: The local application of bFGF was found to enhance osseointegration, especially at the fourth week of healing period after application (P = 0.046). RFAs and RTVs were found to be higher in bFGF-treated implant with hydrophilic surfaces when compared with both bFGF-treated hydrophobic implants and nontreated hydrophilic controls. CONCLUSION: Local application of bFGF seems to increase the stabilization values in implants with hydrophilic surfaces and those with hydrophobic surfaces.

RESUMO

Maxillary sinus augmentation is an accepted technique for dental implant placement in presence of insufficient maxillary bone. There are various techniques in the literature, either by crestal or lateral approach in maxillary sinus augmentation that have high percentage of success, while all have complications. Schneiderian membrane perforation is the most common complication encountered during surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits of preoperative model surgery and the ease of use of a maxillary sinus surgical template (MSST) during maxillary sinus augmentation surgery with a lateral approach. Ten patients included in the study needed rehabilitation of a partially or totally edentulous maxilla with an implant-supported fixed prosthesis and requiring sinus augmentation. A questionnaire was asked to performing surgeons, and study results showed the use of an MSST was found to be effective in terms of adaptation (62.5%), window preparation (87.5%), ease of elevation (95.9%), ease of grafting (95.9%), reduction of perforation risk (91.7%), and achieving immobility during the procedure (62.5%); however, the use of an MSST was also found to prolong the surgical procedure (100%) and restrict the view of the surgical area (79.2%). Maxillary sinus augmentation appears to be a useful tool for locating an appropriate entrance to the sinus cavity, allowing for safe elevation of the sinus membrane and effectively grafting the sinus floor.

RESUMO

Aspergillosis, which was first discovered in late 19th century, is a relatively rare disease in the sinuses. In recent years, a number of invasive aspergillosis infections of the maxillary sinus in immunocompromised patients, as well as the non-invasive form of the disease, have been reported. They were caused by the materials used in endodontic treatment, like gutta-percha, antrolith and by foreign bodies. This paper reports a case of aspergillosis in the maxillary sinus of an immunocompromised patient. It is associated with a root fragment after a much earlier tooth extraction.
