RESUMO

Ninety-six measurements of glycosylated hemoglobin (Hb A1c) were performed over a 2 1/4 year period in 40 children and young adults with Type I diabetes mellitus. Sixty-five per cent of the patients were found to be under ideal or good control and 17.5% under satisfactory control. Urgent readjustment of therapy was indicated in 17.5%. Our experience suggests the importance of quarterly Hb A1c determinations as a therapeutic guide-line and as a prognostic and quality control parameter.

RESUMO

Echovirus 30 was the cause of abacterial meningitis and pharyngitis in 22 cases in the Ludwigshafen on Rhine area in summer 1976 and in a further 26 cases in various regions of the German Federal Republic. In 11 children echotype-30-virus could be isolated from the CSF. In 47 children the diagnosis was established by a rise of neutralising antibodies. Positive virus isolation from the CSF was only possible during the first two days of the illness using rhabdomyosarcoma cell tissue cultures. These were particularly sensitive to the echovirus 30 subtype found.

RESUMO

The blood ammonia levels were estimated in 42 children with convulsions (grand mal). The levels were elevated within 3 hours after the seizure without exception (23 children). 4 to 8 hours after the seizure the levels were found near the upper norm range (6 children). The levels returned to normal 24 hours after the seizure (13 children).

RESUMO

A case of septicemia caused by Moraxella osloensis is described. A 4-year old girl fell ill with symptoms similar to those described in cases of septicemia caused by Neisseria meningitidis. Two days after the commencement of treatment with penicillins, however, Moraxella osloensis could be isolated from cerebral fluid, which contained only a small number of cells. It is assumed that the delayed recovery of the child was directly related to the diminished susceptibility of this Moraxella strain to penicillins. Since Moraxella strains may be resistant to these antibiotics, it is necessary to distinguish between Moraxella and N. meningitidis by means of laboratory tests. The symptoms elicited by Moraxella are similar to those in septicaemia caused by N. meningitidis, but are considerably milder in character.
