RESUMO

When a solid object or wheel is repeatedly dragged on a dry sandy surface, ripple patterns are formed. Although the conditions to form ripple patterns have been studied well, methods to eliminate the developed ripple patterns have not been understood thus far. Therefore, history-dependent stability of the ripple patterns formed on a sandy surface is investigated in this study. First, the ripple patterns are formed by sweeping the flat sandy surface with a flexible plow at a constant speed. Then, the sweeping speed is reduced, and the variation of ripple patterns is measured. As a result, we find that the ripple patterns show hysteresis. Specifically, the increase in amplitude of ripples is observed when the reduced velocity is close to the initial velocity forming the ripple pattern. In addition, splitting of ripples is found when the reduced velocity is further decreased. From a simple analysis of the plow's motion, we discuss the physical mechanism of the ripple splitting.

RESUMO

A method was developed to obtain the absorption coefficient spectrum of a grain of coal (as small as 10(-7)) in the region of aliphatic and aromatic C-H stretching bands (2700-3200 cm(-1)) using infrared transflection microspectroscopy. In this method, the complex refractive index n - ik was determined using an optimization algorithm with the Kramers-Kronig transform so that the calculated transflection spectrum from the Fresnel equation corresponded to the measured one. The obtained absorption coefficients were compared with the bulk values determined from the potassium bromide (KBr) pellet measurement method.

RESUMO

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a versatile analytical method and nano-scale spatial resolution could be achieved by scattering type near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). The spectral bandwidth was, however, limited to approximately 300 cm(-1) with a laser light source. In the present study, the development of a broadband mid-IR near-field spectroscopy with a ceramic light source is demonstrated. A much wider bandwidth (at least 3000 to 1000 cm(-1)) is achieved with a ceramic light source. The experimental data on quartz Si-O phonon resonance bands are well reproduced by theoretical simulations indicating the validity of the present broadband near-field IR spectroscopy.

RESUMO

In order to obtain broadband near-field infrared (IR) spectra, a Fourier-transform IR spectrometer (FT-IR) and a ceramic light source were used with a scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM). To suppress the background (far-field) scattering, the distance between the scattering probe and the sample was modulated with frequency Ω by a piezo-electric actuator, and the Ω component was extracted from the signal with a lock-in detection. With Ω=30 kHz, a peak-to-peak modulation amplitude of 198 nm, and a probe with smooth surface near the tip, broadband near-field IR spectra could be obtained in the 1200-2500 cm(-1).

RESUMO

A scanning electron spin resonance (ESR) microscope using a localized microwave field was redesigned to measure ESR spectra from 0 to 400 mT using electromagnets. Divalent copper ion (Cu2+) in copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4 . 5H2O) was imaged, after the powdered samples were cemented in silicone rubber under a magnetic field. The ratio of the two signal intensities at g=2.27 and 2.08 clearly indicates the orientation of the particles. This method can be used for mapping the local magnetic field and its direction.
