Recent statistics show a decrease in the overall use of drugs and alcohol in the general population [1]. In sharp contrast to this trend is the indication that adolescents' use of drugs and alcohol is increasing [2]. Because the use of drugs and alcohol can have serious implications for adolescents' physical, emotional, and social development, it is important that human service practitioners working with them understand those factors that influence their substance use, in order to develop effective interventions to deal with this growing problem. This article reports the findings of a study of drug and alcohol use among a sample of 779 adolescents who attended middle schools in a large urban city in the southwest United States. The study examines the relationships between substance use, social support, and a variety of other psychosocial factors. The implications of those relationships for human service practice and research are discussed.

In a study of 57 older parent caregivers of adult children with mental retardation, more than half had not planned for their child's future care. Income, race, child's gender and level of adaptive behavior, and degree of parental interaction with relatives and friends were significantly related to future care-planning activity.

Case managers who develop long-term care service plans for functionally impaired elderly persons must integrate the supportive efforts of the client's social network into the overall service approach. The ultimate goal is to develop a plan whereby the formal service providers supplement rather than supplant the care and assistance available from the older person's network. This article presents a framework that identifies those variables associated with the relationship dynamics that exist between older persons and their social network members. The framework can be used by case managers to help them assess the characteristics and functioning of their clients' social network relations and develop service strategies that maximize the helping efforts of those networks.

Elderly persons with mental retardation constitute a relatively small and often overlooked subgroup of our aged population. As their numbers continue to grow, it is likely that social workers in health care and social service agencies serving either the mentally retarded or the aged will increasingly encounter such older persons as clients. This paper presents a case study that illustrates some of the problems and issues that social workers in a variety of community-based and institutional-based agencies are likely to face in helping to provide for the health and residential care needs of members of this group.
