RESUMO

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Oral premedication used to reduce the anxiety in patients undergoing dental treatment. Passion flower has been used as a sedative that can control the dental anxiety. PURPOSE: This study determines the efficacy of Passion flower, in reducing anxiety during the dental procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this randomized- one sided blind clinical trial, 63 patients, with moderate, high and severe anxiety(according to VAS score) in need of periodontal treatment were randomly divided into 3 groups of 21.The first group was given the drop Passion flower drop and the second group were given the drop of placebo and the third group; neither drug nor placebo were given (negative control group). RESULTS were analyzed by Chi Square, Variance Analysis, Tucky and Paired-T using SPSS software. RESULTS: Mean anxiety level prior to the drug administration was 12.09±2.42 for the Passion flower group, 12.00±2.66 for the placebo group and 11.66±2.39 for the negative control group. After premedication, these values were: 8.47±2.58 for the Passion flower group, 10.52±2.11 for the placebo group and 11.23±2.34 for the negative control group. These results demonstrated a significant difference (p< 0.0001) in the anxiety levels before and after the Passion flower administration in the Passion flower group and also between the Passion flower group and the other two groups. CONCLUSION: RESULTS indicated that administration of Passion flower, as a premedication, is significantly effective in reducing the anxiety. Since this study is a pioneer on the subject, further trials with greater number of subjects are required to confirm our results.

RESUMO

Clinical preceptorships, in collaboration between clinical agencies and educational institutions have been documented as an effective and innovative means of facilitating student learning, providing advantages for both the clinical and educational settings. A preceptorship programme of 100 hours duration was developed and delivered by the nurse education institute, in consultation with a health care organization. The objectives of the preceptorship programme were to help registered nurses, in partnership with clinical nurse educators, to effectively integrate, support and assist the development of clinical competence in the undergraduate nursing student. Following the implementation of the preceptorship programme a research study was conducted to evaluate programme effectiveness. The purpose of the study was to examine preceptors, preceptees, and nurse managers' preceptions of the preceptor role and factors which influenced the performance of preceptors. The methods used in this study included those commonly found in evaluation research. That is, participants were drawn from those who were involved, either directly or indirectly, in the preceptorship programme, namely preceptors, preceptees and nurse managers. Using focus groups, they were each asked to identify the outcomes of the programme in practice. Study findings highlighted the importance of formal preceptor preparation, which was shown to enhance teaching and learning opportunities for student preceptees, personal and professional development of the preceptors, and the promotion of positive partnerships between nurse educators and nurse practitioners. The need for formal recognition of the preceptor role in practice, particularly in relation to the provision of adequate time and resources, emerged from the study. The research findings enabled the development of an evaluative model of preceptorship, which highlights the intrinsic and extrinsic factors impacting on the preceptor role.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether products of oxidative and inflammatory reactions are detectable in the tear fluid of patients suffering from dry eyes. METHODS: The tear fluid of 217 patients (397 eyes) was sampled. Criteria for grouping of the patients were (1) basic secretion test ("sicca 1": BST = 0-5 mm, n = 78 eyes; "sicca 2": BST = 6-10 mm, n = 109 eyes) and (2) subjective symptoms (normal BST, burning, foreign body sensations, tearing, dryness of the eyes: n = 78 eyes). One group of healthy patients (normal BST, n = 132 eyes) served as controls. Lipid peroxide levels and myeloperoxidase activity, as parameters for oxidative tissue damage and inflammatory activity, were determined in the tear fluid. Those patients whose consent could be obtained were subjected to the rose bengal test (sicca 1: 56 eyes; sicca 2: 97 eyes; subjective symptoms: 44 eyes; controls: 49 eyes). The correlation between BST and rose bengal test results was calculated. RESULTS: Lipid peroxides were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the groups sicca 1 and subjective symptoms than in healthy controls, as was the inflammatory activity in groups sicca 1, sicca 2 and subjective symptoms. Additionally, the inflammatory activity in the group sicca 1 was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in the groups sicca 2 and subjective symptoms. No evidence of a significant correlation between BST and rose bengal test results was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Both oxidative tissue damage and polymorphonuclear leukocytes indicating an oxidative potential occur in the tear film of patients suffering from dry eyes. These reactions lead to severe damage of the involved tissue. Free radicals and inflammation may be involved in the pathogenesis or in the self-propagation of the disease.
