Iron is specifically important to athletes, and attention has grown to the association between sports performance and iron regulation in the daily diets of athletes. The study presents new insights into stress, mood states, fatigue, and sweating behavior among the non-anemic athletes with sweating exercise habits who consumed a routine low dose (3.6 mg/day) of iron supplementation. In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study, both non-anemic male (N = 51) and female (N = 42) athletes were supplemented either with a known highly bioavailable iron formulation (SunActive® Fe) or placebo during the follow-up training exercise period over four weeks at their respective designated clinical sites. The effect of oral iron consumption was examined on fatigue, stress profiles, as well as the quality of life using the profile of mood state (POMS) test or a visual analog scale (VAS) questionnaire, followed by an exercise and well-being related fatigue-sweat. Also, their monotonic association with stress biomarkers (salivary α-amylase, salivary cortisol, and salivary immunoglobulin A) were determined using spearman's rank correlation coefficient test. Repeated measure multivariate analysis of variance (group by time) revealed that the total mood disturbance (TMD) score was significantly lower (P = 0.016; F = 6.26) between placebo and iron supplementation groups over the four weeks study period among female athletes. Also, a significant reduction in tired feeling/exhaustion after the exercise (P = 0.05; F = 4.07) between the placebo and iron intake groups was noticed. A significant within-group reduction (P ≤ 0.05) was noticed in the degree of sweat among both male and female athletes after 2 and 4 weeks of iron supplementation, while athletes of the placebo intake group experienced a non-significant within-group reduction in the degree of sweat. Overall, the result indicates routine use of low dose (3.6 mg/day) iron supplementation is beneficial for non-anemic endurance athletes to improve stress, mood states, subjective fatigue, and sweating conditions.

Previous studies have examined the effects of n-3 fatty acid intake in supplement form or fish oil capsules, but there are few studies based on other foods. Perilla oil is a traditional Japanese seed oil rich in n-3 fatty acids. This randomised trial aimed to determine the appropriate n-3 fatty acid dose through consumption of perilla oil, which improves gut function and microbiota in trained athletes, and the amount of fat fuel required to provide energy to athletes involved in high-intensity training to improve athletic performance. Thirty-six female athletes training six times per week were randomly assigned to three groups according to perilla oil intake: 9 g/d (high oil intake (HOI)), 3 g/d (low oil intake (LOI)) and placebo-supplementation (PLA) groups. The HOI and LOI groups had perilla oil-containing jelly and the PLA group had placebo jelly for 8 weeks. Gut microbiota, constipation score and urinary biochemical index were measured pre- and post-intervention. The spoilage bacteria, Proteobacteria, significantly decreased (P = 0·036, d = 0·53), whereas Butyrate-producing bacteria, Lachnospiraceae, significantly increased (P = 0·007, d = 1·2) in the HOI group. Urinary indoxyl sulphate significantly decreased in the HOI group only (P = 0·010, d = 0·82). Changes in the constipation score were significantly lower in the HOI group (P = 0·020) and even lower in the LOI group (P = 0·073) than in the PLA group; there were significant differences between groups (P = 0·035). Therefore, perilla oil intake may improve gut function and microbiota in athletes, with higher doses resulting in further improvement.

PURPOSE: Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by prolonged high-intensity exercise can cause structural and functional damage. Antioxidant polyphenol supplementation, which reduces ROS levels, may improve high-intensity exercise performance. We evaluated the effect of lychee fruit extract, which contains high levels of low-molecular-weight oligomerized polyphenols, on high-intensity exercise performance. METHODS: Ten male athletes were included in an open-label trial that consisted of control and intervention phases, with a 7-day washout period between phases. The participants were administered oligomerized lychee fruit extract for seven days, whereas no intervention was given in the control phase. High-intensity intermittent exercise and the Wingate test were performed. The power output, blood lactate levels, reactive oxygen metabolite levels, biological antioxidant potential, heart rate, and rate of perceived exertion were measured. RESULTS: The average power output was significantly higher in the intervention phase than in the control phase (p < 0.01), while the change in blood lactate levels was significantly lower in the intervention phase than in the control phase (p < 0.05). The average heart rate was significantly higher in the intervention phase than in the control phase (p < 0.05), without changing the rate of perceived exertion. Although there was no difference in reactive oxygen metabolite levels between the phase, the change in biological antioxidant potential was larger in the intervention phase than in the control phase (p = 0.06). The Wingate test showed no significant differences between the phase. CONCLUSION: Short-term loading with oligomerized lychee fruit extract may increase performance during high-intensity intermittent exercise by improving metabolism.

Intensive, prolonged exercise is known to induce gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, with gut dysbiosis suggested as being one of the causatives. In the present study, we wanted to investigate the relationship between intensive exercise and the gut microbiota status. To that end, the microbiota, the moisture content and the bacterial metabolites (e.g., organic acids) of female endurance runners (n = 15) and those of non-athletic but healthy, age-matching female controls (n = 14) were compared. The analysis of the gut microbiota analysis showed that, unlike control subjects, female endurance runners had distinct microbiotas, with some bacteria found in higher abundances likely being involved in gut inflammation. The concentration of succinate, a gut bacterial metabolite regarded as undesirable when accumulated in the lumen, was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the female endurance runners. Faecalibacterium, that was significantly (p<0.05) abundant in female endurance runners, can produce succinate in certain environments and hence may contribute to succinate accumulation, at least partly. The present work suggested that the gut microbiotas of female endurance runners are seemingly dysbiotic when compared with those of control subjects. Further investigation of the mechanism by which intensive, prolonged exercise affects the gut microbiota is recommended.

Resistance training adaptively increases the muscle strength associated with protein anabolism. Previously, we showed that the combined intake of astaxanthin, ß-carotene, and resveratrol can accelerate protein anabolism in the skeletal muscle of mice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of anabolic nutrient-rich foods on muscle adaptation induced by resistance training. Twenty-six healthy men were divided into control and intervention groups. All participants underwent a resistance training program twice a week for 10 weeks. Astaxanthin-, ß-carotene-, and resveratrol-rich foods were provided to the intervention group. Body composition, nutrient intake, maximal voluntary contraction of leg extension, oxygen consumption, and serum carbonylated protein level were measured before and after training. The skeletal muscle mass was higher after training than before training in both groups (p < 0.05). Maximal voluntary contraction was increased after training in the intervention group (p < 0.05), but not significantly increased in the control group. Resting oxygen consumption was higher after training in the intervention group only (p < 0.05). As an oxidative stress marker, serum carbonylated protein level tended to be lower immediately after exercise than before exercise in the intervention group only (p = 0.056). Intake of astaxanthin-, ß-carotene-, and resveratrol-rich foods supported resistance training-induced strength and metabolic adaptations.

BACKGROUND: Low accessibility to grocery stores may change dietary habits and increase health problems for elderly people living in communities. AIM: This study investigated whether the distance from the nearest grocery stores, including supermarkets, convenience stores, and drugstores, and the frequency of store-specific shopping were associated with dietary intake frequency among elderly people. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two towns of suburban cities. A total of 177 people aged ≥65 years were recruited (M age=76.7 years). The frequency of intake of 10 food groups and dietary variety scores (DVS) were evaluated. Distances from the districts to the nearest grocery stores and the frequency of shopping during a week at each store were evaluated using a geographic information system. RESULTS: For supermarkets, people living <300 metres from the nearest supermarket showed a higher intake frequency of fruit (p=0.024) and oil/fat (p=0.045), and those shopping three or more times a week showed a higher intake frequency of meat (p=0.025). In the case of drugstores, people shopping one or more times a week showed a higher intake frequency of eggs (p=0.006) and oil/fat (p=0.048). People living <300 m from the nearest supermarkets (p=0.048) and drugstores (p=0.047) showed higher DVS than those living ≥500 m from the nearest supermarkets and drugstores. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that shopping at supermarkets and drugstores is associated with dietary intake frequency and dietary quality for elderly people living in suburban cities.

OBJECTIVE: The antioxidant factors, astaxanthin, ß-carotene, and resveratrol, have a potential effect on protein synthesis in skeletal muscle and a combined intake may have a greater cumulative effect than individual intake. The aim of this study was to investigate the combined effects on skeletal muscle mass and protein metabolic signaling during the hypertrophic process from atrophy in mice. METHODS: Male ICR mice were divided into five dietary groups consisting of seven animals each: normal, astaxanthin, ß-carotene, resveratrol, and all three antioxidants. Equal concentrations (0.06% [w/w]) of the respective antioxidants were included in the diet of each group. In the mixed group, three antioxidants were added in equal proportion. One leg of each mouse was casted for 3 wk to induce muscle atrophy. After removal of the cast, the mice were fed each diet for 2 wk. The muscle tissues were collected, weighed, and examined for protein metabolism signaling and oxidative damage. RESULTS: The weight of the soleus muscle was increased in the astaxanthin, ß-carotene, and resveratrol groups to a greater extent than in the normal group; this was accelerated by intake of the mixed antioxidants (P = 0.007). Phosphorylation levels of mammalian target of rapamycin and p70 S6 K in the muscle were higher in the mixed antioxidant group than in the normal group (P = 0.025; P = 0.020). The carbonylated protein concentration was lower in the mixed antioxidant group than in the normal group (P = 0.021). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that a combination of astaxanthin, ß-carotene, and resveratrol, even in small amounts, promoted protein synthesis during the muscle hypertrophic process following atrophy.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted with infants diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma (RB) and their mothers. It explored characteristics of the mother-infant interaction, the infants' developmental characteristics and related risk factors. METHOD: Cross-sectional statistical analysis was performed with 18 dyads of one-year-old infants with bilateral RB and their mothers. RESULTS: Using the Japanese Nursing Child Assessment Teaching Scale (JNCATS) results showed that infants with RB had significantly lower scores compared to normative Japanese scores on all of the infants' subscales and "Child's contingency" (p < 0.01). Five infants with visual impairment at high risk of developmental problems had a pass rate of 0% on six JNCATS items. There were positive correlations between Developmental quotients (DQ) and JNCATS score of "Responsiveness to caregiver" (ρ = 0.50, p < 0.05) and DQ and "Child's contingency" (ρ = 0.47, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Infants with visual impairment were characterized by high likelihood of developmental delays and problematic behaviors; they tended not to turn their face or eyes toward their mothers, smile in response to their mothers' talking to them or the latter's changing body language or facial expressions, or react in a contingent manner in their interactions. These infant behaviors noted by their mothers shared similarities with developmental characteristics of children with visual impairments. These findings indicated a need to provide support promoting mother-infant interactions consistent with the developmental characteristics of RB infants with visual impairment.

This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of the Japanese version of the Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment (J-ITSEA), a parentreport questionnaire concerning social-emotional/behavioral problems and delays in competence in 1- to 3-year-old children. The differences in score between genders, ages, and between the J-ITSEA and the original Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment were examined. The data of 617 participants recruited from Saitama prefecture through stratified two-stage sampling were analyzed. The Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.76 to 0.93. Gender differences emerged for some problems and all competence scales, with boys rated higher in the Externalizing problem domain and Activity/Impulsivity subscale and girls rated higher in the Internalizing problem domain, Inhibition to Novelty subscale, and all Competence scales. The Competence domain score increased across age groups. Compared with a normative sample in the US, participants in this study rated higher in Aggression/Defiance and Separation Distress, and rated lower in Peer Aggression and most of the Competence scales. The results indicate that the J-ITSEA scores should be interpreted in comparison with standard scores assigned for gender and 6-month age groups, and that specific criteria for the cut-off points for the J-ITSEA are required instead of those in the original questionnaire.

This study aimed to clarify the relationships among developmental characteristics of retinoblastoma (RB) infants, mother-infant interaction, and mental health of mothers. Prospective studies were conducted twice with 13 dyads of mothers and infants who were between one (Time 1) and two years old (Time 2). Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses were performed. The mean Developmental Quotients (DQ) significantly decreased between Time 1 and Time 2 (p < .05). Four (30.8%) infants showed DQ p < 85 at Time 1. They showed a DQ below the borderline at Time 2 and their developmental changes were different from RB infants in the normal DQ range. Infant Behavior Checklist-R (IBC-R) scores negatively correlated with DQ (p < .05). The mothers' Japanese Nursing Child Assessment Teaching Scale (JNCATS) scores were significantly higher than the normative mean. The IBC-R scores negatively correlated with mothers' JNCATS scores at Time 1 (ρ = -.66, p < .05) and positively correlated with the child domain scores on the Parenting Stress Index at Time 2 (ρ = .62, p < .05). Some RB infants showed a developmental delay. Mother-child interactions were negatively affected and mothers recognized their infants' problem. The support needs to be provided in early infancy.

BACKGROUND: Functioning stromal cells are sometimes seen in primary and metastatic ovarian neoplasms. However, the cytologic features of functioning stromal cells have been described only rarely. CASE: A 19-year-old woman had an alpha-fetoprotein-producing ovarian yolk sac tumor with functioning stroma. Her preoperative serum testosterone level was elevated. Imprint cytology showed that the functioning stromal cells had centrally located nuclei with low nuclear/cytoplasmic ratios. Occasionally these cells had vacuolated cytoplasm, suggesting the presence of lipids. In sharp contrast, the yolk sac tumor cells had more pleomorphic and hyperchromatic nuclei. We were able to distinguish between neoplastic and functioning stromal cells on the basis of these findings. In addition, immunostaining for inhibin on imprint cytologic slides was of great help in identifying functioning stromal cells. CONCLUSION: Because functioning stromal cells may unexpectedly induce hormonal effects in a variety of ovarian tumors, it is important to identify such cells in cytologic specimens.
